" Machine parlante automatique ".
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
La figure 1 est une vue en plan montrant la superstruc- ture du meuble; la figure 2 est une section verticale à travers le méca- nisme intéressant la boita de résonance ou diaphragme qui se- ra par exemple du type "pick-up"; la figure .3 est un plan schématique suivant III-III de la figure 2; la figure 4 est une coupe verticale à travers le mécanis- me intéressant les bras à ventouse aspirante qui manoeuvre ou les disques soit pour les amener sur/les enlever du plateau tournant; la figure 5 est une vue sohématique verticale du mécanis- me à cames et de la pompe d'aspiration Centrale; la figure 6 est une élévation latérale de la pompe cen- trale à soufflet; la figure 7 est une coupe à travers une botte à soupape de genre connu et formant relai commandé entre la pompe cen- trale et ies soufflets de commande faisant partie de chaque élément actif de la machine;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>

"Automatic talking machine".
The object of the present invention is an automatic speaking chine in which pneumatic science is applied to perform all the operations which are necessary to play, for example, a gramophone record. . These operations consist in placing a disc on the turntable, in lowering or raising the resonance boot or diaphragm with needle, in 'starting the plate. turntable, to stop the turntable, to remove the disc, etc. All these operations are currently carried out by hand and require, on the part of the person serving the machine, almost constant attention. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The talking machine, object of the present invention, automatically performs all these operations under a simple control by button closing an electrical circuit, control which can be placed at a distance. All the controls for the various operations are carried out pneumatically, that is to say under the use of a vacuum produced in bellows connected to a vacuum pump, which can be started by will and which is activated. stops when all the operations of the complete cycle are completed.
Here is the cycle of operations that an observer can observe on the top of the cabinet which contains all the devices and which carries, in the middle, the rotating plate on which the discs must rest. A reserve of discs to be played is placed next to the platter; the discs played are accumulated at another point, next to said platter.
The cycle includes:
A record is placed on the turntable with the needle of the diaphragm engaged in the first outer turn of the record of the record. By means of a switch a circuit is closed which starts an electric motor and the turntable starts to reproduce the recording, either by ordinary means or by the intervention of a sound amplifier device and reinforced emission paxillon. At the end of the transmission, the turntable stops as well as the motor which controls it.
The diaphragm or resonance box moves aside while being raised to allow the following operations: a pivoting arm, emerging from the interior of the cabinet and carrying, at its end, a suction cup, is raised and s 'brings, while turning, above the disc which has just been reproduced. It lowers so that the suction cup rests on the disc. The arm lifts while carrying the disc, turns and places the disc next to the turntable. Meanwhile another arm, disposed of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
preferably symmetrically with respect to the first, has become soûlée vé by driving the upper disc of a reserve of discs placed next to the plate.
This arm can pivot so as to land this new disc above the turntable; he bends down to deposit this disc, lifts up by letting go of the disc and returns to its normal position Takes, by its suction cup, the first disc of the reserve, At this moment, the arm carrying the boot resonance or diaphragm is lowered while moving towards the outer coil of the recording. The appliance is then in a position to restart the cycle described above.
As additional operations it should be noted that the trade in recording discs comprises two standardized dimensions, so that the invention provides for the resonance box a device which will bring it either to the first recording coil of a disc of one kind, or on the same turn of the other kind of disc. The discs differ in that one has 30 cms. in diameter and the other 25 cms.
The operations also include the complete and final stopping of the mechanism when the last disc in the reserve has been reached, placed on the table of the apparatus.
As a complementary operation, the installation could play all the discs in the reserve one after the other without interruption or intervention by the operator. In the event that one wishes to stop the apparatus in the middle of a transmission, it can be done, for example, by closing an electric circuit actuating appropriate devices, so that at this moment the game stops. and that the disc be removed and replaced with the next disc. You can also combine the device so as to be able to play the nth disc of the reserve by successively passing the n - 1 previous discs on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
turntable, without making them play, but simply bringing them to the stacking location.
All the aforementioned operations are controlled by means of bellows acting by vacuum, that is to say by a vacuum created by a central pump in the form of a bellows.
All these operations are obviously done in such a way as to be time-regulated and for this purpose the various control bellows are actuated by a cam drum whose circumferential cams are profiled to suit the duration and the nature of each operation. .
The invention will be described below with reference to the fig gures of the accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment of the apparatus.
FIG. 1 is a plan view showing the superstructure of the cabinet; FIG. 2 is a vertical section through the mechanism relating to the resonance box or diaphragm which will for example be of the "pick-up" type; Figure .3 is a schematic plan along III-III of Figure 2; FIG. 4 is a vertical section through the mechanism of the suction cup arms which maneuver or the discs either to bring them on / to remove them from the turntable; Figure 5 is a vertical schematic view of the cam mechanism and the Central suction pump; Figure 6 is a side elevation of the central bellows pump; Figure 7 is a section through a valve boot of known type and forming a controlled relay between the central pump and the control bellows forming part of each active element of the machine;
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Figures 8 and 9 show vertical sections showing two different positions of the device which causes the movement of the resonance box or diaphragm with needle outside of a disc of 30 cm. In diameter, respectively towards the recording groove. of 25 cms .; FIGS. 10 and 11 showing, in vertical section and in two positions, a switch used to allow the apparatus to play the whole reserve of discs without interruption; FIG. 12 illustrates schematically, in vertical section, the device serving to stop the whole apparatus when the last disc is played.
On the table or upper plate 1 of the cabinet, which contains the pneumatic components, is the turntable 2 on which the discs to be played must be placed. The axis of this plate penetrates inside the cabinet and is controlled for example by an electric motor. A lever with two arms 3 carries the resonance boot or diaphragm 4 and this diaphragm, which may for example be of the type called "pick-up", is connected, by conductors 5, to a sound amplifier with high - speaker of known construction. The lever 3 is balanced by a counterweight 6, so that by oscillating around its horizontal pivot 7, the needle comes to rest, with the desired pressure, in the recording groove of the disc.
The horizontal pivot 7 is mounted in a U-shaped support 11, a support which rests, with the intervention of a thrust ball 8, on the hollow base 9 bolted on the table 1. A vertical pivot 10, forming an extension of the support in U 11, crosses the base 9 and engages inside the cabinet. The free end of the lever 3 is formed as a hook hooking into a flexible cable 12 which engages, through a slot in the table 1, inside the apparatus to be connected to the movable wall of a / bellows
EMI5.1
13, wall whose degree'dtoscillat'on, produced by depressio can be adjusted using a stop screw '14, *, It is understood
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
that, if we create a vacuum in the bellows 13,
the diaphragm or resonance boot is lifted off the disc. If the bellows 13 is inactive, the needle can be lowered to come into contact with the recording of the disc, and said needle. The can follow the spiral of the recording groove due to the ball bearing 8. It is evident that due to this lateral displacement the passage slot for the link 12 should be lengthened *. The elongation compensation necessary for the movement of the cable 12 is obtained automatically by the flexibility of the bellows 13.
It was said above that at the appropriate time the diaphragm or resonance box 4 must lower while moving towards the outer coil of the recording, ie a 30 cm disc. or a 25 cm disc. The diaphragm 4 is raised by the action of the bellows 13; it is lowered by stopping the action of the bellows 13 and by gravity. The movement towards the outer turn of the recording is effected by the mechanism detailed in Figures 2 and 3 and described below.
On the vertical pivot 10 and inside the cabinet is fixed a lever 15 by means of the collar 16 and a pressure screw, so that the angular position of said lever can be adjusted. One end of this lever 15 is controlled by a vacuum bellows 17, the movable wall of which carries a stop blade 17 'engaging said end of the lever. This bellows 17, actuated at the precise moment, turns the lever 15 and is adjusted so that the rotation of the pivot 10, which results therefrom, brings the needle of the diaphragm 4 into the outer coil of the recording. of a disc of 30 cms.
In the case where it is a 25 cm disc, the oscillating movement of the lever 15 is corrected by a vacuum bellows 18 acting, by its stop 18 ', on the other end of the lever 15 and to
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
against the action of the bellows 17. If therefore the bellows 17 brings the diaphragm to the edge of a 30 cm disc, the bellows 17 will act alone; if the diaphragm is to fit into the outer groove of a 25 cm disc, the bellows 17 and 18 act either simultaneously or one after the other, so that the apparatus must therefore include a control which keeps bellows 18 inactive when it comes to a 30 cm disc.
This command will be, for example, a button 78 which is lowered because it is in reaching the edge of a disc of 30 cms., While the disc of 25 cms. cannot touch this button. The discs of 30 cms. The button will therefore be lowered so as to keep the bellows 18 inactive. On the other hand, when the button is released in the presence of a 25 cm disc, the two bellows will be controlled by the installation described below.
Considering FIG. 3, assuming that the needle is located in the outer turn of the recording of the disc, the lever 15 being integral with the pivot 10 will therefore move in the direction of the arrow a. A chain 19 connects this lever 15 to the wall of a balanced bellows 30. And 20 'with two communicating compartments, with external valve 23 and compensating springs 21 and 22. This bellows with essentially movable walls normally closes off the door. The mouth 48 of a conduit 49 terminating in the pneumatic equipment described later.
We realize that moving the lever $ 15 - before the arrow !. brings the tension of the chain 19 and the development of the bellows 20 which takes place in a balanced manner, the adjustment of the chain and the bellows being such that at the end of the horizontal movement of the lever 15 the bellows 20 abruptly discovers the mouth 48, so as to admit atmospheric pressure into the duct 49. This extreme position of the lever 15 then corresponds to the end of the emission
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
and the disengagement of the orifice 48 is moreover suddenly brought about at this moment by the fact that the end of the recording spiral forms a very pronounced turn which abruptly drives the needle of the diaphragm towards the end. central region of the disc.
The bellows 20 'has a small opening o which allows the admission of air as the bellows opens by the advance of the lever 15 - it is only at the end of the stroke. is of the "pick up" arm that a sudden deflection of the lever 15 is produced causing the immediate drive of the bellows 20 which closed the opening 48 - the planned opening o being too small for the sudden admission of air in compartment 20 'of the bellows.
Admission of the atmospheric pressure into the pipe 49 has the result, in particular at the end of the emission, of setting in motion the pneumatic mechanism which will continue the operations of the cycle, namely the stopping of the motor of the plate. turning, raising the diaphragm, removing the disc which has just been played, placing a new disc in position, lowering the diaphragm so as to bring the needle into the first turn. If the end of the transmission of a recording thus causes the admission of atmospheric pressure into the duct 49, this admission can be caused at any time voluntarily, for example, by means of an electro magnet 52, possibly remotely controlled, which, by attracting the valve 51, discovers the mouth 50 forming part of the same pipe 49.
This last device makes it possible to stop any moment of the game, and even without the reproduction starting, the cycle of operations from the lifting of the diaphragm to the replacement of the disc and the lowering of the needle. The balanced bellows therefore does not act by vacuum and is not / connected to the vacuum pump. It is simply operated by lever 15 and constitutes a silent and very sensitive valve which causes the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
activation of various active components precisely at the end of a program or at the option of an operator. It is obvious that during the lateral displacement of the lever 15 the bellows 17 and 18 are inactive.
The movement of the discs, either to bring them on or to remove them from the turntable, takes place pneumatically, that is to say by suctioning the discs, so as to make them adhere to a suction cup of suitable construction.
Referring to Figures 1 and 4, two bent arms 24 and 25 mounted in the cabinet so as to present their upper horizontal arm above the table 1, the ends of these arms each carrying a suction cup 26 working by suction. . The pipes 24 and 25 have a vertical part which engages inside the cabinet. The operation of each of the arms 24 and 25, one of which serves to remove the discs and the other to bring the discs to the platter from a reserve, is based on the same constructional elements and their operation is. time adjusted using a cam drum, as described below.
Considering more particularly Figure 4, the horizontal end of the arm 24 supports a rubber suction cup 26 shaped in the form of a flattened bell providing a particularly flexible edge 261 and an axial passage 27. This axial passage allows the formation of a hollow. annular 28 in which a vacuum can be made by a pipe 29, for example, a rubber tube which passes through the length of the arm 24 to go to a vacuum bellows controlled by the central mechanism.
The operation which takes place in the recess 28 when the bell presses lightly on a disc causes the latter to adhere without the central hole of the disc itself being able to break the adhesion, the adjustment being such that the axial recess 27 corrodes. responds to the said, hole. The duration of the operation for each of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
suction cups 26 is obviously regulated by the same cam drum to which it has been referred.
The vertical part of the tube 24 passes through the support table 1 ', inside the cabinet, through a felt insert 30 and after having obviously passed through a hole made in the table 1. A small pulley 31 is wedged on the vertical end of the tube 24. This pulley carries a blade 32 placed at a small distance from the said pulley and parallel to the axis thereof, a blade which will serve as a stop limiting the angular movement of the pulley. said pulley and, consequently, of the arm 24.
This blade 32, obtained for example by the folding of an edge trim of the pulley 31, is intended to come into contact with the adjustable rollers 33 mounted in oscillating supports 34 whose position, relative to to the pulley, is, adjusted by means of the stop screws 36 passed through consoles 35. the rollers 33 can therefore be brought closer to each other or to the periphery of the pulley 31, so as to so that the contact limits for the stopper blade 32 can be perfectly adjusted. These rollers 33 then allow, in each extreme position, the vertical reciprocating movement of the pipe 24.
The extreme pol sitions of the suction cup 26 must obviously correspond with the turntable 2, on the other hand, with the reserve of the discs or the place of stacking of the played discs. This angular movement is controlled by a cable. 37 which engages part of the periphery of the drum 31 and the end of which is connected to the movable wall of the vacuum bellows 40 fixed inside the cabinet. Cable 37 is fixed by its free end to said pulley and drives the latter against the action of a spring 39, one end of which is fixed to the cabinet and the other to a cable 38 which engages a part of the periphery of the pulley 31 to which it is fixed by its end.
When we create a vacuum in the bellows 40, the cable 37 makes
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
turn the arm 24 until the blade 32 meets the guide rollers 33; when the bellows 40 ceases to function, the spring 39 returns the shaft 24 to the starting position until the blade 32 meets the other guide roller.
The vertical movement of the pipe 24 is limited by the collar 41 clamped externally on this pipe so as to meet the support table 1 '. The pipe 24 is lifted using a pin 42 placed opposite and in the axis of said pipe 24.
This pin carries a pivot 43 which passes through an eyelet 44 welded internally and disposed in the axis of the pipe 24. The pin 42 is raised by a blade 45 fixed on the movable wall of a vacuum bellows 47 and the lowering limit of the plate 45 is adjusted by a stop screw coming into contact with the fixed base 46.
The action of the bellows 47 therefore causes the rise of the pipe 24 with its sucker 26 and the inaction of the said bellows authorizes the descent of this pipe. This vertical movement has no influence on the cables 37 and 48 which control the partial rotation of the pipe, given the flexibility of the bellows 40 and of the spring 39. It is obvious that the bellows 40 and 47 act according to an adjustment. In the time obtained. by the cam drum. The arms 24 and 25 are of identical construction, but are obviously of different adjustment over time.
However, the angular displacements can correspond in that a suction cup starts from the turntable with a disc while the other leaves from the reserve supporting a new disc.
In Figures 5 and 6 is schematically illustrated the central pneumatic body with the cam drum which controls the various active bellows. In a frame 53 is placed the bellows 54 cooperating with the vacuum pump 55 actuated by a connecting rod 56 by means of a crankshaft 57 controlled by a pulley 58 and a transmission.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
taking energy from an electric motor, not shown. The bellows 54, combined with the bellows pump 55, is of known construction. The vacuum bellows 54 laterally carries a leaf spring 59 which tends to normally open said bellows and which at the same time carries a contact 60 possibly cooperating with a fixed contact 61.
The contacts 60 and 61 form the circuit of the electric motor which rotates the disk-holder turntable, and these contacts 60-61 will preferably be of the type of mercury contact with circuit breaker.
Resuming the cycle of operations as explained at the beginning, a disc being on the turntable, the needle being engaged in the first coil of the recording, all the elements of the apparatus are at rest at this precise moment . If the circuit of the motor controlling the pulley 58 is then closed using a switch button, the pump 55 starts up and begins to create a vacuum in the bellows 54.
At the same time, this circuit closure has closed the circuit in the amplification installation and in the loudspeaker, if these devices are provided. It will take some time before sufficient vacuum in bellows 54 comes to close the circuit through contacts 60-61, during which time the three electrode lamps of the amplifier have been able to heat up to the desired degree. Contacts 60-61 having closed the circuit when a circuit breaker intervened, the speaking machine reproduces the recording without any other element of the device intervening or being put into action.
It is only at the end of the reproduction, when the needle of diaphragm 4 engages in the last pronounced turn of the recording, that all the movements necessary for the replacement of the disc are started, in particular by the device described with reference to Figure 3 of the appended drawings, or in substance, by admitting atmospheric pressure into
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
the pipe 49. This suggests that during the game there was therefore a vacuum in the duct 49, a vacuum controlled by the central pneumatic pump 54-55 under the conditions explained below.
Considering FIG. 5, the end of the crank shaft 57 carries a friction pulley of small diameter, capable of driving the pulley 63 of large diameter, wedged on a pin 64. Normally this shaft 64 is is mounted so that the pulley 63 is released from contact with the pulley 62.
This clearance is caused by the fixed leaf spring 69 acting on the sleeve 66 which surrounds the shaft 64. The shaft 64. can however be brought closer to the shaft 57 when the fixed bellows 68, under the action of a vacuum, pulls on the hook 67 fixed to the sleeve 66. This approach of the shaft 64 causes contact between the pulleys 62. -63 and the rotation of the drum 65 mounted on the shaft 64. This drum carries the cams 70 which act on elastic blades 71 capable of activating the various active bellows which control the operations of the cycle. It will be understood that the position and the length of the various cams 70 make it possible to adjust the activation over time and the duration of action of each of the active bellows.
During the reproduction of the recording the drum 65 therefore remains separated from the shaft 57 and at the end of the transmission this drum is lowered and put into rotation under the action of the bellows 68.
It is necessary to describe hereafter, with reference to figure 7, a small valve box used, in pneumatic installations for musical instruments, and which is designed to put in communication, at the appropriate moment, the pump to vacuum 54-55 with one or the other bellows active in the system. Each individual active bellows will therefore have a valve boot as shown in Figure 7. The valve boot 72 (Figure 7) is divided into two compartments.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
a and b. Compartment a is separated from compartment b by a valve 77 guided by a valve stem 77 '. This compartment is. connected by a duct 76 to each active bellows (in the drawing Fig. VII n 68). It should be noted that the valve 77 is dual functioning.
At rest it rests on its seat and thus puts each active bellows in communication with the external pressure through the opening o thus allowing the active bellows 68 (for example) to return to its normal position after each function. In the second position of the valve
77 the opening d is closed allowing the suction of the bellows 68.
Compartment b in turn consists of two sections b and c-separated from each other by a washer membrane
74- on this washer rests the valve stem 77 '. A small opening o "puts the two compartments b and c in communication.
The compartment b is connected to the vacuum pump 54-55 by the duct 75. The compartment c is connected by the duct 75 'to the upper part of the valve box B. This duct is closed by a movable blade 71 controlled by the drum cams 65.
A branch taken from the duct 75 'enables the same duct (duct 49 of FIG. III) to be closed off by the control devices of FIG. III.
It should be noted that at any time of operation of the apparatus there is a relative vacuum caused by the pump 54-55 in parts b and c of each valve 72 and in the pipes connected to it ( conduits 75 'to 49 of fig.
III) 6th vacuum sucks the valve 77 on its seat.
Let us admit that at a certain moment of the operation of the apparatus - either by lifting the blade 71, the operation of the bellows 20, or the attraction of the electromagnet, - One of the openings 48-50 or 75 "just discovered.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
Atmospheric pressure will disturb the equilibrium which existed in compartment b-c of valve box 72.
The membrane 74 will be lifted pushing the valve stem 77 'thus driving the valve 77 which will close the opening o.
Lifting the valve 77 will put the active bellows 68 in direct communication with the vacuum pump 54-55.
The development of diaphragm 74 is expected to be at least three times greater .. than that of valve 77.
As said above, each bellows is thus controlled in time by an intermediate valve boot and it is a box of this kind which causes the triggering of all the functions at the end of the reproduction of a recording.
The duct 49 of FIG. 3 is in fact normally connected to the duct 75 'FIG. VII'.
The uncovering of the orifices 48 or 51 of the duct 49, suddenly allowing atmospheric pressure, will therefore start the vacuum bellows 68 ', fig.5. This will lower the -shaft 64 suitably guided until the pulley 6 comes into contact with the pulley 62. The drum 65 immediately begins to rotate. The various cams 70 successively discover, by means of the blades 71 or other members, the admissions of atmospheric pressure into the various orifices 73 of the various valve boots assigned to the various active bellows. As already stated, the position and dimensions of the cams control the operation of the various vacuum bellows, so that their functions begin and end at the time required to accomplish the various operations required.
Referring to Figures 8 and 9, there is shown the button 78 which serves to cause the movement of the needle from the diaphragm towards the initial turn of a 30 cm disc. or 25 cms. respectively. When a disc of 25 cms. is placed on the. plate the button 78 is raised by the action of a small breath
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
flet 82, this bellows being connected to the vacuum pump. In this position of the slide 79, the bellows 18 of FIG. 3 is in turn in communication with the vacuum pump via the conduit 18 "which regulates the control of the bellows 17, the lever arm 15 and the arm. of "pick up" for the disc of 25 cms.
The disc of 30 cms. push button 78 down as well as slide 79 and small bellows 82; the weight of the disc being greater than the pressure of the bellows 82 - thereby the duct 18 ′ free as well as the bellows 18 - which allows the bellows 17 and the lever arm 15 to move in order to allow the arm to " pick up "to be placed on the extreme edge of a 30 cm disc.
When all the operations have been completed and the needle of the diaphragm is placed in the outer turn of the disc resting on the plate, the roller 64 carries a last cam which causes, with the intervention of a valve boot (fig. 7), admitting atmospheric pressure into the pump. vacuum 54-55. As soon as contact 60-61 is interrupted, the electric motor of plate 2 stops and all the components come to a standstill to wait for a restart.
This stopping of the pump 54-55 is obviously followed by the interruption of the motor circuit which controls the pulley 58 (fig.5), an interruption which can also be caused if necessary by the end of the movement of the drum 65. This drum 65 is returned to its disengaged and rest position by the action of spring 69.
To allow the continuation of the cycle of operations, that is to say to allow, for example, the successive execution of a certain number of discs, it is possible to provide, as shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, a slide 83 mounted on the table 1 making it possible to communicate or interrupt the communication between the conduits 84 and 85, 86 and 87 respectively
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
Eventually, these conduits including the shutdown of the pump '54 -55 and the interruption des'circuits electrical.
In addition, the lifting of the last disc of the reserve is signaled by the instantaneous stopping of the machine, by the fact that the latter disc covers an orifice 88 into which ends a duct 89 leading to the pump 54-55. Lifting the last disc or a backing plate for the disc stack therefore causes the entire device to stop instantly.
We realize that we can make a number of discs pass successively on plate 2 without allowing the recording to be reproduced, or even interrupt the playing of a disc in the middle of the middle to replace it with one of the discs. following. The absence of mechanical parts throughout the installation results in smooth, silent and foolproof operation. One or the other organ can be manually operated, which will always return to its normal position - and will always obey the same function by reason of the use of the pneumatic construction with the aid of bellows. vacuum of classic construction and provided with the usual ruler.
