 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

    IMPROVEMENTS TO SUSPENSION SYSTEMS LACK OF RESONANCE,
ESPECIALLY FOR THERMIOMIC DEVICES
The present invention aims at improvements to non-resonance suspension systems intended to support objects sensitive to vibrations and to absorb their vibratory energy. The invention is particularly applicable to thermionic devices in which the vibrating movement of the electrodes can give cause mirophonic noises in the output circuit.

   In triodes, for example comprising a filament, a grid and an anode, the heated element is suspended in such a way as to allow its expansion. The support of the filament can take the form of a coiled spring.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 helical, in large apparatuses, while, in tubes of small dimensions, it has been found sufficient, from a practical point of view, to provide rigid supports.

   But in the case of small tubes, the filament, when heated, elongates and may tend to vibrate relative to neighboring electrodes, when the bulb is hit or vibrated.
Under these conditions, its frequency is often audible and its vibrations can give rise to hissing and other annoying noises in the speaker.

   Likewise, the grid and the anode are made of a relatively light material which can also vibrate! the amplitude of the oscillations of the filament is generally 'much greater than that of the other electrodes * Limitation to the invention, resort to a special support for the structure of the electrode, thanks to which the vibratory energy of the filament is effectively damped and it is the same with the vibratory energy of the other electrodes-
The invention provides a practically aperiodic support for parts subjected to vibrations, and which acts so as to efficiently absorb the vibratory energy of these parts,

   this support being applicable in particular to the filament and to the other electrodes of a thermionic device. According to another characteristic, the invention provides a cable damped by friction and arranged to suspend objects tending to vibrate when subjected to shocks, and in general, to be reduced or preferably to be eliminated entirely. the effects of the vibratory energy of the supported parts.

   The new features and advantages of the invention will be better understood by referring to the following description and to the drawings which accompany it, given simply by way of example, and in which:
Fig. 1 shows in perspective a thermionic discharge device equipped with an electrode support according to the invention *
Fig. 2 is a variant of the group of electrodes and of the support piece.

   Fig. 3 is a detail view of the perfect support cable during its manufacture *; , ..,: On Fig 1, an empty bulb containing a filamentary cathode 2, a helical grid 3 and an anode 4, these two @

 last electrodes surrounded the filament concentrically.

     The anode is preferably formed by a curved plate provided with terminal flanges between which is clamped a vertical support rod 5 fixed in the thinned part of the foot, at the lower end, and extending so as to serve as a conductor. 'antrée-
The upper end of the rod 5 carries a part placed horizontally and one end of which is secured in a block 6 of insulating material. The block 6 is also supported by a wire fixed to a post 7 which is spot welded to the turns of the grid and which extends through the thinned part of the foot to form another conductor -d'input.

   The position of the lower end of the filament is maintained by a rigid wire, and its upper end is suspended on an aperiodic support piece 8 which will be described in detail later, and which can also serve as a conductor. This part takes the form of a stranded cable or of a rod comprising several parallel wires 9, for example six in number, preferably made of a metal such as iron or copper, and clamped by a wire. 10 which is preferably made of the same material, as clearly seen in fig. 3
Each section of cable can be finished by fixing together, for example by welding, the last turns of wire 10.

   The composite rod is bent in an inverted or cantilevered V-shape so as to clear the electrode structure.

     @ The lower end of part 8 is fixed by a clamp 11 of metal tale, on the foot. To ensure that there is no rotation between the aperiodic part and the collar, a rigid wire 12 is provided, extending from the curved or angled part of the support 8 towards the block 6
When, inside or outside the bulb, mechanical disturbances are generated which may modify the relative positions of the various electrodes, or cause the entire electrical structure to oscillate around the lower rigid wires, the vibratory energy transmitted to the active part is efficiently dissipated in the aperiodic support 8.

   It seems that when the rod 8 undergoes deformation, the wires 9 rub against one another and thus dampen the vibrations without transmitting them to the electrodes. The totality and speed of the amortization and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 wave dissipation depending on the nature of the part 8.

   Among the factors which determine these characteristics are the spacing between the neighboring turns, as well as the number, size and nature of the wires used. * It has been found that the spacing of the turns gives the intended cable an effect which is approximately nearly the same, as a variation in propeller tension. The number and gauge of the wires used could be determined, to a large extent, from the weight to be supported. It has been noted that a part manufactured in this way remains virtually vibration-free or aperiodic at all times. vibrations of audible character. The cable also prevents the effect of sudden disturbances, such as impact on the bulb or other glass parts,

   and opposes their being transmitted to the electrode structure. Briefly, the rod 8 can be considered, from a mechanical point of view, as insulating the electrodes against the shocks which occur inside or on. the outside of the bulb,
Fig. 2 shows an electrode system suspended entirely between sections of the improved support. This variant is similar to that which has been described with reference to FIG. 1, except that there is provided a small section of cable 13 fixed to the folded-down part of the main support 8, and another small section 14 which supports the lower insulating block 15.

   These short pieces preferably have a smaller diameter than the main upright 8, and they can be constructed with a smaller number of turns, or with an equal number of worse but of smaller gauge. Block 15 carries the lower end of the electrodes by means of suitable blue links.

   The feed conductors 16 and 17 for the grid and the anode, respectively, are made of relatively small wires, so as to minimize the amount of material required for the microphone system, and to provide maximum flexibility, so as not to disturb or reduce the dampening role of aperiodic media. The filament can be supplied with a current through cables 8 and 14.

   The electrode structure is preferably placed and located inside the bulb, not shown, by means of a metal collar 18 tightened around the feet so as to constitute a support for the upright 8. When the cable is long and slender. it may be necessary to provide, between the ends

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 mites of the upright, a transverse support 19, one end of which can be welded into the thinned part of the foot ,, and the other end of which can be provided with a hooked end which grips the vertical part as shown :.

   The preceding explanations made it possible to appreciate that the entire structure of electrodes is supported at the same time at the top and at the bottom by an aperiodic part thundering a structure which completely isolates the electrodes, particularly the filament, vibrations which strike the glass bulb.

   These parts act exactly in the same way as what was described with regard to the previous figure-
The main post 8 and the secondary supports 13 and 14 have been shown to be entirely made up of an absorbent system, but it is easy to understand that only part of the supports can be established in this way. The non-resonant cable which forms the object of the present invention. is not limited, in its application, to thermionic devices, and it can also be applied in all cases where vibratory disturbances must be dissipated, in particular when the energy which must be absorbed has a relatively large amplitude or intensity.

   As an example showing other applications of a cable of the nature described, we can indicate its application in the guying of airplanes, as cables or ropes for all uses used to suspend or support objects of all kinds liable being exposed to excessive vibrations.

   In a special way, it is understood that the arrangements and the applications which have been indicated above, by way of example, are in no way limiting, and that one can deviate from them without going beyond the scope of the invention.
