 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  Process for manufacturing crank shafts or cranks.

   Hitherto, crankshafts or crankshafts have been manufactured from blanks forged directly into flat slabs from the raw blocks.

  These blank pieces are then bent, and bent if necessary to place the various cranks in opposite positions.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The procedure has hitherto been the same for the manufacture of each of the elbow cranks which are forged in one piece from the raw bloos.

   In addition to the disadvantage that, owing to the use of one-piece blocks as blanking pieces, only low metalworking can be achieved by forging and deflection of forged fibers in these parts are partially. - very 'unfavorable. This method of manufacturing crank shafts and cranks therefore had the significant disadvantage that the area of the blowholes and bleeding is inside the finished forged product, and most of the time just at the locations of the cranks most subjected to some efforts.

   These blowhole and bleed locations often already condense during refining of high value parts to form crevices and missed parts or often only appear during finishing or semi-finishing work. and thus increase quite significantly the cost of manufacturing the defective products which can be delivered, since parts exhibiting these defects cannot be used and have already required high handling costs.

   However, the existence of these blowing and bleeding points is felt even more strongly in finished products free from external defects, because they can lead to harmful ruptures due to the very high and variable forces entering in play during continuous operation.

   Until now, we had to accept these faults and their harmful consequences since we did not

In addition,

   the new process still has for the manufacture of crank shafts or cranks the essential advantages that the production of the material of these cylindrical blanks is notably better than the production of products forged by the process adopted until now, from blocks in one piece and that the most favorable layout or curvature is obtained for the fibers.

   For the manufacture of separate cranks, the procedure is advantageously carried out by compressing together the intermediate pieces passed, for example through the rollers with the use of a wedge in the form of a saddle, into a flattened annular body, in which the flat parts form the flanges of the crank . after which this flattened ring is transformed either by stamping or by other work, into a single handle, or, by division, into two or more handles. Another possibility is to first divide the rolled intermediate products , forged or rolled and to manufacture the cranks by bending the ends of the segments of rings thus formed.

   It is possible by the latter process, depending on the size of the cranks, to manufacture one, two or more cranks from a single annular intermediate piece. The new process is of particular importance for the manufacture of cranks. heavy cranks with long stroke, which we could not hitherto manufacture. flawless, from a single piece, due to the large mass of the rough blocks.

   It is also advantageously possible to manufacture crank flanges and parts of similar shape in the same way.

Instead of first compressing the cylindrical blank by means of a saddle-shaped wedge into a flattened ring body, and then dividing it, one can first also divide the cylindrical blank, and then transform the ring segments afterwards. in cranks by bending their ends.

   FIGS. 7 and 8 show in section and in front view another embodiment of the invention.

  The drilled blank part in the shape of a cylinder is rolled and stretched over a mandrel so as to obtain a cylindrical intermediate part 8, provided in its middle with an annular bead 7. This intermediate part is divided by radial cuts. 9 into slabs which are then transformed into cranks by bending their ends (as shown in FIG. 7 by arrows).

   Figures 9 to 1a show the manufacture of an autompbile crankshaft with four crank knobs according to the method of the present invention. The raw block shown in figure 9 is driven back then drilled or bored in the known manner so as to obtain a blank piece of cylindrical shape, as can be seen in FIG. 10, By subsequent rolling, the intermediate piece of FIG. 11 is obtained. After cutting out the ring itself, or drawing it in a straight line, it is produced from the slab of figure 12, the crankshaft shown in figure 13, by bending and other treatment.
