 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

Toutefois;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 18>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 19>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 20>

   Dans ce dernier cas, lorsque le moteur à courant alternatif 4 est porté à 1200 tours par minute, il actionne la machine à courant continur 5 en génératrice;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 21>

  "VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL PROCESS AND APPARATUS
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for producing motive power at variable speed using alternating current of constant frequency.

  More particularly, it relates to a method and apparatus for effecting the speed regulation of AC motors having fixed speed characteristics.

   In their simplest forms, AC motors are essentially constant speed motors. Variable speed constructions involve the sacrifice of either efficiency or simplicity.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The slip-ring type asynchronous motor is an example of the type whose efficiency is poor. It can be operated at a reduced speed wasting, in resistance losses, an amount of energy which is almost directly proportional to the decrease in speed.

  In addition, its regulation at reduced speeds is poor.

  The commutator-type AC motor and speed control by the Scherbius system are examples of the type in which the speed variation is obtained at the expense of simplicity of construction.

   The speed control method and apparatus which is the object of this invention is based on a combination of the simplest types of electric machines; they are effective within the limits of a large speed scale and have good speed regulation characteristics.

   The theory of the method and of the control apparatus is based on the application of a constant speed type AC main motor to develop the main part of the movement and the motive force required for the control and on the operation. application of an auxiliary variable speed direct current machine to modify, by addition or subtraction, the speed of the main motor.

   The auxiliary direct current machine is a reversible motive force transforming apparatus, the electrical side of which is connected to an alternating current source, preferably that supplying the main motor, through a transformer device. adjustable which governs the speed and direction of rotation of the auxiliary DC machine. This device is preferably a motor-generator unit, the voltage of the generator of which is adjustable in direction as well as in magnitude by a mechanically controlled rheostat.

   On the mechanical side, the auxiliary direct current machine is connected, through a transmission or directly.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 to the main motor and the load, in a differential relation9 so that the load torque is differentially imposed on the main motor and the auxiliary motor, in either direct or inverse proportion to the multiplication of movement of one of the motors relative to the other.

   The present method and the present apparatus are advantageous in efficiency and simplicity Substantially normal machines can be employed everywhere The main machine is preferably a squirrel cage type motor which in itself is of construction. Particularly simple and robust and, in one of the embodiments shown, this engine does not have any friction contaets.

   For traction, or for loads which may have negative torque characteristics, the invention provides regenerative braking means at all points of the entire speed scale.

   The main AC motor and the auxiliary motor are both constant speed machines. Consequently, the control installation is of the constant speed type in that it maintains a substantially fixed speed for any adjustment, between the limits of a large scale of torques. The control installation will maintain substantially fixed speeds for defined positions of the operating rheostat, and by modifying the setting of this rheostat, the speed and (or) the direction of rotation of the installation are changed in a defined manner.
In the accompanying drawings which show several embodiments of the invention.

   Figure 1 is a schematic of an embodiment of the method and apparatus according to the invention and shows the motor unit and the regulator unit.

Figure 2 is a cross-section on a larger scale of the power unit of figure 1.

   Figure 3 is a similar sectional view of a motor assembly in which the two drive motors are interconnected by a differential gear.

   Figure 4 is an end view of the gear and brake mechanism.

   Figure 5 is a side view partially cut away of another motor assembly arrangement in which there is a flexible belt transmission between the DC motor and the AC motor.

   Figures 6, 7 and 8 are characteristic diagrams which explain the operation of the control system.

   Figure 9 is a diagram of the operating characteristics of the control installation applied to a load consisting of a fan and also shows the possibility of lowering the lower limit of the speed variation scale.

   This device has two main groups, namely motor group 1, which is coupled to load 3, and regulator group 2. The motor group has two machines and is composed of an AC motor. 4, of the constant speed type, and of a direct current motor !, of the variable speed type. The latter machine works at certain times like a motor and at other times like a generator during the operation of the installation.

   The motor 4 of Figure 1 is shown on a larger scale in Figure 2. It comprises a rotor 6 which may be provided with a squirrel cage winding or the like, and an outer part 7 which normally constitutes the stator. but which, in this case, is mounted to rotate in bearings 8 and 9 (figure 2) o

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   Rotor shaft 10! is' coupled to load 3 and a flywheel 12 has also been shown assuming that the load is such as a rolling mill, or that it has at times negative torque characteristics, such as for example a rolling load of the kind encountered in traction.

   The stator or frame 7 is provided with two groups of slip rings 13 and 14, this stator being provided with two windings making it possible to obtain two different speeds between the rotor 6 and the stator 7. A selector switch 15 makes it possible to obtain two different speeds. connect the alternating current conductors 16 either to the low speed winding connected to the rings 13 or to the high speed winding connected to the rings 14.

   The frame or stator 7 is coupled to the armature 18 of the direct current machine 5 in this embodiment. It can therefore turn this armature or receive a rotational movement from it. The direct current machine 5 is an ordinary motor with independent excitation, the inductor 19 of which is separately excited by the direct current bars 20, by means of an adjustment rheostat 22.

   An inverter 17 is connected between the line wires 16 and the selector switch 15, so that, if desired, the phases can be reversed to reverse the direction of rotation of the AC machine 4. As will be seen more @@ pin, the regulating rheostat of the regulator group 2 and the selector switch 15 can be operated in correspondence, so as to ensure the execution in a regular order of Inaction of the regulator group and of the motor group.!
The regulator group consists of a motor-generator group of the normal type It comprises a machine

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 direct current 23 capable of supplying any voltage between zero and a maximum,

   positive or negative polarity. The direct current machine 23 behaves sometimes like a generator (supplying energy to the direct current motor machine 5) and sometimes as a motor, supplying energy to the alternating current motor 24 of the regulation group 2 receiving energy from the direct current driving machine 5 and driving in alternating current the machine 24 which was previously its engine.

   In group 25, the armature 26 of the direct current machine 23 is mechanically connected to the rotor 27 of the alternating current motor 24. The armature 26 is electrically connected to the armature 18 of the direct current motor machine 5, these two armatures forming a closed circuit 28.

   The inductor 29 of the generator 23 is separately excited by the conductors 20 at direct current and at constant potential, by means of an adjustment rheostat 30 which is preferably of the "potentiometer" type and comprises two potentiometric windings 32 and contacts 33 co-operating with these windings to apply to the terminals of the inductor 29 a voltage which varies in suitable degrees in size and in polarity. The voltage can be varied from maximum to zero, in either direction, and vice versa, in as small steps as desired.

   The rotor 6 and the stator 7 of the main motor 4 may be coupled or wedged mechanically or magnetically, as desired, when it is desirable to initiate the load with the DC motor 5, as may be. the case in tensile application.

   In this case, if, as will be explained later, the stator of the AC motor is stationary, it will suffice to brake the rotor (magnetically, mechanically or otherwise)

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 to perform the desired start using the DC motor
The limits of the scale of the speeds between which the installation must operate determine to a certain extent the power ratios of the DC and AC motors, and the coupling mode of the two motors. also determines the couple @t the speed.

   It will be noted that when the two motors are coupled to the load as shown in Figures 1 and 2, they have the same torque since the DC motor 5 exerts its effect on the speed of the load 3 by actuating ( or by being actuated by) one of the rotating parts of the AC motor 4. In this construction, the differential relationship is obtained by coupling the two parts of the AC motor to the load and the DC motor respectively.

  The term "differential control" used hereafter is understood both for the aforementioned coupling of two rotating members of one of the motors with the load and with the other motor or for a suitable gear which couples the ar- 'bres of the two motors with the load in differential relation.

   In the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2, the DC motor 5 is coupled directly to the AC motor 49 with a ratio of 1 to 1, and must therefore be able to exert a torque equal to the torque of this last. It follows that it becomes relatively large and, for a moderate variation of the speed scale is a low speed motor.

   The motor-generator unit 25 of the regulator assembly 2 can be operated at high speed, and it can therefore be relatively small in size.

  If the motor group is running at a high speed, this group can be relatively slower. Its speed can be chosen- /

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 sie independent of that of the main AC motor. The nominal power of group 25, abstraction; µfixed with losses, is the same as that of motor 5.

   Two or more motor units can be operated using the same motor-generator unit. In this case, the nominal power of the single motor-generator group 25 is equal to the sum of the nominal powers of the direct current motors 5. A single controller can be provided to govern the operation of all the control installations governed by the same group. regulator.

   Instead of the DC motor 5 being mated directly in a 1 to 1 ratio with the AC motor stat 7, this motor 5 can be made smaller and operated at a higher speed, which is obtained by connecting this motor to the stator 7A. as shown in Figure 5, by a transmission allowing the motor 5A to run at a higher speed.

   As shown in figure 5, the motor 5A is provided with a driving pulley 32 which is connected by a belt to a sleeve 33 carried by the stator 7A of the alternating current motor 4A, which stator rotates in suitable bearings 34 and 35 The rotor 6A is mounted on its shaft 10A which also rotates in bearings 36 and 37.

   The control installation of FIG. 5 comprises a series of flexible elements such as cables or V-belts, connected in parallel. Of course, gears or a transmission chain could be employed if desired.

   The motor 5A is mounted on a frame 39 above the alternating current motor 4A, but it is obvious that the motor 5A could be placed in any other suitable position relative to the stator 7A of the alternating current motor 4A.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   The operation of the construction of Figure 5 is essentially the same as that of the apparatus of Figures 1 and 2, except that the movement of the direct current motor 5A is multiplied, so that this motor can be given smaller dimensions. due to its higher speed and lower torque o The torque can be reduced in each case in the transmission ratio between the DC motor and the AC motor. The load can be active or passive.

  If it is an active load, such as for example a rolling load or a flywheel 12, the speed of which must vary, the recovery of the active load is carried out as will be explained below in more detail. the control installation corresponds to the setting of the rheostat 30, and if the rheostat 30 is set for a lower speed, that is to say so as to decrease the voltage of the direct current generator 23, the load is immediately braked by the inherent recovery which characterizes this control installation.

   This is independent of the direction of the torque of the loaded
Figures 3 and 4 show another arrangement of the parts of the motor unit. In this case, the DC motor '5B and the AC motor 4B are connected to each other and to the load in different ways by a planetary type gear transmission. The shaft 42 of the direct current machine 5B passes through the hollow shaft 43 of the alternating current motor 4B and carries a central pinion 44 meshing with three planet wheels 45. The planet wheels 45 are interconnected by a cage 46 which is itself coupled with the receiving shaft 10.

   The satellites 45 mesh with the internal teeth of a wraparound wheel 47 connected to the hollow shaft 43 of the alternating current motor 4B In this way, thanks to the differential 40, the movement of the direct current motor.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

5B is multiplied with respect to that of the AC motor 4B. The torque of the DC motor 5B is decreased, and its speed is increased in proportion to the transmission ratio. The AC motor 4B is provided with high speed connections 48 and low speed connections 49, as explained in connection with FIG. 1.

   The enveloping wheel 47 constitutes a brake drum with which cooperates a brake tape 50 serving to immobilize the drum. This also immobilizes the rotor of the AC motor, so that the load can be initiated using the DC motor. It is thus possible to obtain three steps defined for the speed of the AC motor, namely zero speed, low speed and high speed, the latter preferably being twice the low speed, although this is not essential. It is possible, if desired, to provide for the entire number of speeds between certain limits.

   The brake 50 is controlled by a solenoid 52 mounted in a suitable brake circuit. Of course, the electrically controlled brake could be replaced by any other device for controlling or applying the brake.

   When the control is applied to industrial uses (coal mills, fans, etc.) in which the speed variation scale does not need to be large, it is sufficient that the DC motor 5 is large enough to provide the increase and decrease in power required to produce the speed variation. The operation is then as follows:
When the stator 7 is at rest (it can be kept at rest using the construction of Figure 3 or by immobilizing the DC machine 5 as shown in Figures 1 and 2), the AC motor 4 is behaves like a motor of the normal type rotating at its nominal speed.

   If a speed more

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 high is desired, the voltage of the direct current machine 23 of the regulator unit 20 is increased. This machine then supplies power to. direct current machine
5 of the motor group ;, and the latter machine functions as a motor to drive the alternating current stator 7 in the direction of rotation of the rotoro
With constant field excitation, the DC machine tends to rotate at a speed which is practically proportional to the DC voltage applied to its terminals o The speed of the stator, and hence the increase in speed of the load , thus increase in the same ratio
If a lower speed is desired,

   the voltage of the machine is increased. DC regulator in reverse direction o The AC stator then drives its DC machine 5 in a direction opposite to that of the rotor, and the latter machine then supplies energy to the rotor. the DC regulating machine 23 which, in turn, acts as a motor to operate its AC machine 24 as a generator, thereby regenerating the energy which has been supplied by the AC machine 4 to the machine 5, excluding losses. The alternating current machine 24 thus restores energy to the power supply network.

   In this case, the decrease in speed of the load is practically in the same ratio as the increase, between zero and the maximum, of the negative direct voltage of the direct current machine 33.

   As shown in Figure 1, the AC motors are both connected to the same power source 16. The two DC machines 5 and 23 are connected in series. The inductor windings of the direct current motor machine 5 are connected to a constant voltage direct current source by a rheos control state 22. The inductor windings of the direct current regulating machine 23 are connected to the same.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 source via a rheostat which is able to transform this constant voltage into a voltage varying in small steps from a positive maximum to a negative maximum, passing through zero.

   With constant excitation of the direct current driving machine 5, the direct current of the circuit 28 is directly proportional to the torque developed by the driving group and has a corresponding direction. If the torque changes direction, the current also changes direction.

   In the case of loads in which the speed variation above the rated speed of the AC motor 4 is equal to or greater than the speed variation below said rated speed, the torque and the speed of the two driving machines 4 and 5 are generally determined by the torque required by the load at its maximum speed. Both machines are subjected to this coupled. The power supplied by each of them is therefore directly proportional to the speed of each.

   In the direct-coupled arrangement of Figs 1 and 2, the DC motor machine 5 must develop the same torque as the AC motor 4.

  It thus becomes a machine with high torque and low speed. '
The belt arrangement of Figure 5 and the gear arrangement of Figure 3 are generally less expensive and more efficient than the direct-coupled arrangement because they feature a higher speed, lower torque DC machine.

   Under the aforementioned conditions of speed variations, and neglecting losses, the nominal values of the regulator group are the same as the nominal values of the direct current driving machine.

  If the speed variation below the rated speed of the AC motor.4 exceeds the variation

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 speed above this nominal speed, the nominal power of the direct current driving machine 5 and of the regulator group 2 may, under certain conditions, exceed that determined by the load conditions at maximum speed chargeo
The energy corresponding to the constant speed undergoes only one transformation, namely by the alternating current motor 4.

   The energy which provides the speed increase undergoes three transformations. The energy supplied by the motor group 1 through the regulator group 2 to the conductors 16 to produce a speed decrease undergoes four transformations.

   As the energy which undergoes these three or four transformations is only that which corresponds to the speed variations from the constant speed of the AC motor 4, it is, in the case of small speed variations, relatively small. The total efficiency of a power plant designed to meet these conditions must therefore be high.

  As the speed scale increases, the efficiency decreases in a corresponding way.
Since the speed of the motor unit is, for any given speed setting, the sum or the difference of the speed of an AC motor at nearly constant speed and of the near constant speed of a DC machine. with separate excitation, the speed of this group must also be practically constant between the limits of a rather large scale of torques.

   The speed variation can be carried out in such small steps that a noticeably smooth speed curve results in all parts of the adjustment scale.
When several power plants must simultaneously follow a given speed cycle, as in rolling mills or flour mills, or in fans or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 other auxiliary devices of a boiler, a single control group can be used to govern the operation of several motor units.

   When precise speed adjustments are required, a more precise secondary adjustment can be obtained by an independent adjustment of the field, for example using a rheostat such as 22, in order to equalize the speeds of the current motor machines. continuous individual 5.

   When torque decreases faster than speed, as is the case with centrifugal pumps and fans, the lower limit of the speed scale can be lowered below the limit of the armature setting. by adjusting the inductor of direct current motor machines, for example using rheosat 22. Due to the decrease in torque at lower speed, the degree of speed reduction will be, in general, rather limited by excessive speeds of the direct current motors 5 and the rotary stator 7 than by poor switching.

   For this kind of service, the direct current driving machine 5 and the alternating current stator 7 must be designed to withstand excessive speed or be provided with a device suitable for preventing excessive speed. An excessive speed of this kind would correspond to the fact that the rotor 6 remains stationary and the stator 7 and the input 18 of the DC motor are rotating at the full rated speed of the AC motor 4.

   The power plant according to the invention can be applied to loads of various torque characteristics. If the torque is substantially constant at all points of the desired speed scale, the limits of this scale will be determined by the rated power of the DC motor, assuming, of course,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 that the AC motor has sufficient rated power o In other words, when the product of the speed of the DC motor by the torque of the load is equal to the rated power of this motor ;, the power plant has reached the limit of its speed scale o
However;

  , in the case of a load whose torque decreases with speed, the lower limit of the speed variation can be lowered by varying the field excitation of the direct current motor.

   The speed variation above the speed of the AC motor by adjusting the armature of the DC motor is limited by the rated power. end of the latter, since as the torque of the load increases, the intensity of the current flowing through the DC armature correspondingly increases. As a result, when the intensity of the current flowing through the DC machine reaches its maximum allowable, it is no longer possible to continue to increase the speed without overloading the DC motor. Likewise, if the AC motor is properly selected, it will reach its rated value at the same or substantially the same speed.

   However, this limitation does not intervene at the lower limit of the speed variation by the adjustment of the armature. When the DC machine works as a generator, the decrease in load speed is accompanied by a decrease in torque. There is therefore a corresponding decrease in the intensity of the current flowing through the DC armature. However, the lower limit of the speed variation of the installation is fixed by the mechanical construction of the direct current machine 5.

   The inductor 19 of this machine 5 normally has a constant excitation which is large enough to provide, by reaction with the maximum armature current of circuit 28, the torque at full load and maximum speed.

   When the DC machine works as a generator, it tends to rotate at a speed such that it generates a voltage substantially equal and opposite to the voltage at the terminals of the generator of the motor-generator group. When this tension increases in the direction. negative, the DC machine increases speed to balance this voltage o When the limit of the armature adjustment is reached, the field of the DC machine is reduced, and as a result, with a lower induction, it The machine needs to increase even more quickly to balance the voltage of the generator, which is kept constant within the limits of the scale of the field adjustment of the control machine.

   This is obtained by reducing the field excitation by the field rheostat 22. By decreasing this excitation, it is possible to considerably lower the lower limit of the speed variation.

   Reference will now be made to FIG. 9 which shows an example of the above-mentioned lowering of the lower limit of the speed variation by an adjustment of the field.

   In the diagram of Figure 9, curve 60 represents the speed-torque characteristics of the load, which in this case is a fan. The torque curve approximately follows the law of squares, i.e. the torque increases approximately with the square of the speed.

  Curve 62 represents the power required by the fan. As the torque increases approximately with the square of the speed, the power required increases approximately with the cube of the speed. In the present case,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

 the speed variation is approximately between 47% and 100%, and this variation is obtained by adjusting the armature in the upper part of the scale and by adjusting the field in the lower part of the scale.

   The power supplied by the alternating current motor is represented by curve 63, and the power passing through the direct current machine is represented by curve 64. The power plant will be considered at its maximum speed, ie. that is, when the fan is operated at 100% of its normal speed. Power is supplied partly by the AC motor and partly by the continuous current motor. As the load torque increases very rapidly, it is seen that the power of the DC machine will reach its limit within the limits of a small speed scale added to the speed of the AC motor.

   The point at which the DC motor is at rest and the fan is driven entirely by the AC motor is where curve 64 intersects the zero power line OX of figure 9o This point 65 represents the fan speed at which the direct current machine immobilizes the stator 7 of the alternating current motor. It is located approximately at 86/100 of normal fan speed. The speed increase obtained by adding the power of the DC machine to the power of the AC machine is therefore only approximately 14% until the DC machine is running at full load.

   However, in the opposite direction the DC machine does not charge as quickly as the speed increases in the negative direction because the torque decreases rapidly, as can be seen from the curve 60 The power demand is represented by the lower part of curve 64, below the baseline 0 X Then

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 that the power supplied through the direct current machine is 14% of the total when the maximum speed of the motor installation is reached, this power does not rise above a negative value of 10% when this machine is working in generator.

   As a result, while the speed decrease due to the armature adjustment would be approximately only 14% less than the 86% at which the AC motor alone drives the load, it is possible, by decreasing the field excitation, to move the limit back and extend the speed variation below 86% to about 46% of the maximum, as shown by the curve in Figure 9.

   If the speed scale is very large, it will sometimes be economical to cover it in two steps with two independent equipment. At higher speed, the larger equipment would give, by an adjustment of the induction (that is to say by the regulator group 2), equal speed variations above and below the speed. rated speed of the AC motor. The lower limit could then be lowered to an even lower value by adjusting the field. The smaller group would then cover its speed scale in the same way. In some cases, it may even be economical to apply this process to a number of steps greater than two. By overlapping the steps, a more gradual speed variation can be obtained.

   When a large range of speeds is required under conditions close to constant torque, this can be achieved by using a two-speed motor such as an AC motor of 600-1200 revolutions per mile. - nute ,. If the direct current driving machine 5 allows a speed scale equivalent to 300 revolutions per minute, it is possible to obtain a scale of 1500 to 900 revolutions per minute by winding at high speed (1200 revolutions)

 <Desc / Clms Page number 19>

 a scale of 900 to 300 revolutions by the winding at low speed (600 revolutions) and, by securing the rotor and the stator of the alternating current motor, for example using the brake circuit 21 of FIG. 1 or the mechanical brake 50 of FIG. 3,

   a scale of 300 to 0 turns with the direct current machine alone.

   By reversing the connections of the windings, the same total speed scale from 0 to 1500 rpm can be obtained in the opposite direction. This mode of operation is especially applicable in the case of traction in which, since several motors are applied, one or more of the AC motors 4 can be passed from one speed to another while the others remain in service. In this way, there is no interruption in the continuity of the tensile force during the transition. This operating mode is shown schematically in Figures 6, 7 and 8.

   It will be assumed that a constant torque tensile load is coupled with the installation of figure 1.

  When the load is at rest and the contact 33 of the rheostat controller occupies the neutral position, the rotor 6 and the stator 7 are locked together by a magnetic winding excited by the circuit 21 of FIG. 1. The rheostat 30 is then operated. to bring the speed of motor 5 to its maximum value, which brings the load to 20/100 of its maximum speed, as represented by part 0-B of the curve in figure 6. The power supplied by the direct current motor is represented by the triangle 0-AB in figure 6, and the speed of the DC machine 5 is represented by the line 0-0 in figure 8.

   The AC machine runs on no load, and the relative movement between its rotor and stator is zero, as shown by line O-K in figure 70
When the rolling load has reached 20% of its speed, the brake applied to the machine is released.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 20>

 alternating current 4, the direct current machine 5 is inverted to its maximum speed, as indicated by the QRS lines in figure 8, and the alternating current machine is energized by its winding at low speed, com- me indicated by the line KL in figure 7.

   The alternating current machine 4 then works at low speed, actuates the direct current machine as a generator and drives the load. The rheostat 30 is operated to gradually decrease the reverse speed of the motor 5 working as a generator, and the speed of the load increases along line B-D of FIG. 6.

   This phase of the operation of the DC machine is indicated by the S-T line in the diagram of figure 80
The direct current machine is thus gradually brought to zero speed, and a progressively increasing voltage is then applied to it by a suitable operation of the rheostat so that its speed is added to that of the alternating current machine, so that the load moves at an increasing speed along line DF of Figure 6, the DC machine increasing in speed along line TU of Figure 8.

   When the speed has reached 60% (point F in figure 6), the direct current machine is changed from full forward speed, as a motor, to full reverse speed, following the UVW line of FIG. 8, and the high-speed winding of the AC motor is then energized to raise its speed to 1200 revolutions per minute;,. The rolling load and reversing of the DC machine will automatically bring the AC machine to its required speed, either at the point of 600 rpm or at the point of 1200 rpm, as the case may be.

   In the latter case, when the alternating current motor 4 is increased to 1200 revolutions per minute, it activates the direct current machine 5 as a generator;

 <Desc / Clms Page number 21>

 the speed of the generator is gradually reduced, by the operation of the rheostat 30, along the lines WX of FIG. 8, to gradually increase the speed of the load along the line FH of FIG. 6, and the machine is then made to work at direct current as a motor along line XY in figure 8 to bring the load to its maximum speed along line HJ in figure 6.

   The DC motor speed scale is preferably given a value slightly higher than desired so that the load can be accelerated slightly above the point shown in the diagram so as to give a certain margin. in particular on ramps and in similar cases.

   When two power units are applied to the same locomotive or other vehicle, speed changes can be made successively one at a time so as to maintain torque on the load in the event the group is being used for traction or to maintain power. resistance opposed to the negative charge in the case of regenerative braking or the like.

   The control facility itself lends itself to recovery. When it actuates a load whose torque changes from a positive value to a negative value

 / slightly seen, the power plant increases power. This speed. then characteristic restores finds its application in the devices of energy to the network of hoists and hoists, the motor-generators groups with flywheel and the railways.

   When applying the control installation, as explained with regard to figures 6 to 8, or part of this installation, the recovery can be carried out from top to bottom down to zero, even when a AC motor with several speeds is applied, by simply reversing the operations described in connection with figures 6, 7 and 8.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 22>

   Of course, in order to carry out the operations described in connection with FIGS. 6, 7 and 8, a suitable manually operated controller can be used to make the successive connections and to move the rheostat controller 30 in the tank. desired order. If the desired speed variation is not greater than that which can be superimposed on a single speed of the ac motor 4, as would be the case, for example, of a variation represented by the line going from B to F via D, the simple rheostat 30 of .figure 1 is sufficient
Numerous modifications can be made to the embodiments described and shown without departing from the spirit of the invention.
