<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"IMPROVEMENTS IN COMBUSTION ENGINES"
The present invention relates to combustion engines whatever the cycle. It relates to improved means which make it possible to obtain, first of all4 and without the presence of deflectors on the cylinders or on the pistons, a gyration movement of the load in the cylinder. oe gyration movement being of constant direction and increasing speed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
An engine perfected according to the invention can. without constructive modifications, and only at the cost of a change in the adjustment of the organs which control the admission and the exhaust, operate according to the two-stroke cycle, or the four-stroke cycle.
When the invention is applied to combustion engines, to injection., It achieves perfect atomization of the fuel in the oxidant, and an accelerated and complete sweeping of the. burnt gases.
To the above effects, the improved means, object of the invention, are mainly characterized in that the admission takes place inside a chamber whose cylindrical side wall has its generatrices parallel to the axis. of the cylinder into which it opens directly, the direction of this wall being a closed curve which preferably has a common axis with a cross section of the cylinder so as to direct into the latter a layer of gas which is subjected to, due to its meeting with the bottom of the piston, a gyratory movement of constant direction, the speed of which is maximum at the end of compression.
As defined in principle, the invention is capable of various embodiments. A particularly advantageous embodiment is further characterized above all in that the directrix of the side wall of the intake chamber has at least two points of un- flexion so as to allow, on injection engines, d '' imprint the jet of fuels with gyratory movements with axes perpendicular to that of the air admitted into the cylinder.
Other advantages, consequences of this arrangement, will become apparent in the description which follows, with reference to the appended schematic drawing which represents, by way of example
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
only, forms of implementation of the characteristics which define the invention.
Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively in axial section and in plan view, a first embodiment of a. advanced cylinder,
Figure 3 is a vertical section along A-A of Figure 2,
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are views similar to Figure 1, for various positions of the piston in its cylinder,
Figures 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 are schematic plan views for various alternative embodiments,
Fig. 12 is a circular diagram of the operating cycle of an engine improved in accordance with the invention.
In the examples illustrated, the intake chamber 3 is ayssi a combustion chamber. Its side wall has its generatrices parallel to the axis of the cylinder and its direction has a common arc B-B with the cross section of the cylinder, and two points of inflection C (figure 2). Such a chamber can easily be obtained by drilling with the aid of a cylindrical cutter which moves ooaxially to the cylinder. The purge air inlet valve for operation under the two-stroke cycle is shown in 1, and the exhaust valve is shown in 2. The fuel is sprayed by an injector 5, the jet of which is directed. perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder on the projection 6 between the two generatrices which pass through the points of inflection C.
The piston 7 has on its bottom a notch 4, the projection of which on a plane perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder preferably corresponds in shape and size to that of the chamber 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It can be seen that the pure purging air sent into the cylinder, when valves 1 and 2 are open, divides into layers which, in the vicinity of the piston base change direction of movement (arrows in figures 1, 2 and 3 ). When valves 1 and 2 are closed, the movement of the layers becomes a gyratory movement of constant direction, the speed of which increases as the piston rises (figures 4, 5, 6) to become maximum when the piston is at its top dead center (figure 6). The fuel jet from the injector 5 is, thanks to the projection 6, the radius of which is suitably determined, divided into two layers of gyratory movements perpendicular to the gyratory movements of the layers of pure air. This ensures perfect atomization of the fuel in the fuel.
Notch 4 in the piston bottom can be adjusted in depth to determine the required decompression rate while allowing the piston to come in, at top dead center, as close to the cylinder bottom as possible (Figure 6).
The four-stroke cycle does not appreciably modify the path of the layers or streams of air, or of the gas mixture prepared in suitable proportions in a carburetor or its equivalent, before it enters the cylinder,
You can increase the rate of rotation, either with pure air or with the thundering mixture, by introducing them under pressure into the cylinder as is done in the
EMI4.1
so-called surl3.mentatîau engines.
With the same arrangement as that described, it is possible to use two pure air inlet or thundering mixture inlet valves 1 (figure 9), or two exhaust valves
2 and only one admission 1 (Figure 8), or two. valves 1 and two valves 2 (figure 10),
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
It should be noted that the valves 1 and 2 can be replaced by sliding or rotating spools or distribution sleeves or jackets, without departing from the scope of the invention,
The shape of the chamber 3 shows an important advantage over cooled engines.
In this case, the cooling air can pass at a very sensitive rate between the wall of the chamber 3 and the chapel (s) of the exhaust valves 2 (FIG. 11). In addition, the injection pipe 5 provided with fins, is in a position very favorable to its cooling. It is also possible to provide several fuel injection nozzles suitably oriented to obtain the gyratory movements indicated.
An example of operation under the two-stroke cycle, improved engines according to the invention. is given by the diagram in figure 6.
OE is the advance at the opening of the exhaust valve before bottom dead center (PMB), closing taking place FE after this
OB is the opening of the purge valve generally occurring before the dead center PMB, its position being determined such that the pressure in the cylinder is lower than that of the purge air. During the period between OB and FE the two valves 1 and 2 are opened together and the scavenging of the burnt gases takes place according to the arrows indicated (figures 1 and 2).
In the period between FE and FB, valve 2 is closed and air continues to enter the cylinder despite the piston rising if the air pressure is sufficient to close valve 1, the quantity d air contained in the cylinder may be greater than that which
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
would correspond to normal compression; there is overfeeding. When valve 1 closes, the air introduced according to the arrows (figures 1-2) takes on a closed vortex movement (figure 4). During the ascent of the piston, the vortex zone is weakened (figure 5),
When the piston 7 reaches its TDC, almost all of the air is contained in the chamber 3 without the gyratory movement having changed direction.
The rate of turn is then maximum. The fuel injection takes place in 1.

1 - Improvements to two or four stroke combustion engines, mainly characterized in that the admission of the charge or of the pure air takes place inside a chamber whose cylindrical side wall has its generators parallel to the axis of the cylinder in which it emerges directly, the directrix of this wall being a closed curve which preferably presents a common axis with a cross section of the cylinder, so as to direct in the latter, a layer of gas which, due to its meeting with the bottom of the piston, undergoes a constant gyratory movement, the speed of which is maximum at the end of compression.
