Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

   Dans ces dessins : fig.1 et 2 sont respectivement une vue perspective et une élévation d'un mécanisme interrupteur conforme à l'invention; fig. 3 et 4 représentent des variantes; fig. 5 est une vue de détail; fige 6 et 7 sont des vues perspectives de deux autres variantes d'interrupteurs et fig. 7a est une vue de détail d'un mécanisme interrupteur commandé par un ressort; fig. 8 est une vue de détail d'un aimant de commande de deux circuits; fig. 9 et 10 sont des élévations avec coupe de deux formes de réalisation d'une pompe munie de l'interrupteur représenté aux   f ig.   1 à 5;

   fig.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 fig. 16 à 19 sont des vues de détail des   soupapes,-   fig. 20 est une élévation avec coupe partielle d'une variante de la pompe représentéeen fig. 9; fig. 21 et 22 sont des vues de détail; fig. 23 représente l'objet de l'invention appliqué à un dispositif   indicatour     du     niveau,     d'un   liquida fig. 24 et 25 sont des sections schématiques de deux varian- tes de pompes; fig. 26 et 27 représentent deux montages de dispositifs de pompage utilisant le genre de pompe représenté en fig. 25; fig. 28,29,30 et 31 sont des vues de détail;

   fig.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 ment.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 15>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 17>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 19>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 20>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 21>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 22>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 23>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 24>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 25>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 26>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 27>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 28>

   1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 29>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 30>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

  The present invention relates to magnetic devices.It relates in particular to electrically actuated control devices, such as inductors or pumps, in which the reciprocal member is driven or actuated by the movable core of a solenoid whose winding is connected to electrical contacts activated or interrupted by the movement of the core.

   In devices of this kind the variation of the magnetic flux of the solenoid - variations due to the movement of its core has already been used to actuate a switch controlling its circuit, but such a construction has not proved satisfactory in practice, since it is difficult to obtain a well-defined movement of the core and, consequently, of the reciprocating member.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 proque itself. These drawbacks are eliminated by the present invention.

   The object of this is to provide an electrically actuated pump, particularly suitable for supplying gasoline or for operating in an explosive atmosphere, this pump also being able to be used to supply fuel directly to the nozzle of a carburetor. , from which we can remove the usual constant level.

   In accordance with the present invention, the magnetic apparatus comprises a permanent magnet or other constantly excited magnetic circuit having an air gap (or a high reluctance part), an armature capable of being magnetically attracted and adapted to follow the variations of the field. of dispersion of this magnet, and a body of movable magnetic substance capable of taking a position - and out of it - bypassing the magnetic circuit through the air gap, which causes the dispersion field from said magnetic circuit to vary alternately, as well as the force of attraction on the reinforcement.

   A spring may be provided to act against the tensile force exerted on the armature when the field is shunted.

   In one embodiment of the invention two similar permanent magnets are used to constitute an annular magnet having diametrically opposed air gaps and through which the flux is alternately short-circuited by the magnetic body, so that the stray fields of the magnets alternately decrease relative to each other and thus actuate the armature.

   In another form, the magnets - instead of being connected in series so as to reserve air gaps between their opposite poles - can be connected in parallel.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 when the magnetic field across the air gaps of each magnet is alternately short-circuited,
Of course, instead of permanent magnets, constantly magnetized electromagnets could be used and the term "permanent magnets" used in the following also includes them. Permanent magnets can be excited by windings connected to the solenoid circuit.

   In the application of the invention to electrically actuated reciprocity devices, such as, for example, electrically driven pumps, the piston of which is actuated or formed by the core of a solenoid, the circuit of the solenoid is controlled. by the armature of the magnetic apparatus and a block or plunger of soft iron, actuated by the piston or connected to the latter (or else by the core of the solenoid) is preferably used to bypass the magnetic field (s) of magnet or magnets,
In the preferred case comprising two magnets, the latter are arranged, with the opposite poles of different magnets - or of the same magnet - in a position such that they correspond respectively to those of the diver at the beginning and at the end of his. race.

   We can therefore see that each time the diver moves between a pair of opposite poles of the magnets, it short - circulates the flux and there is consequently a relative increase in the flux on one pair of poles, compared to the other. The activation or deactivation of the solenoid can therefore be achieved positively by the armature of the magnets, the ends of which are alternately attracted by each pair of poles when the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 soft iron plunger moves with the piston.

   In the embodiment with a single permanent magnet, the latter is arranged so that the plunger - at the end of its stroke - comes into a position in which it forms contact between one of the poles of the magnet and the 'frame. We can therefore see that there will be a variation or redistribution of the flux at each pole, which means that the armature is attracted alternately by each pole.

   The electric pumping devices constructed according to the invention and capable of being used for supplying gasoline to a container, comprise a pump body, a piston moving in the latter and constituting the core (or fixed to a core ) of the solenoid actuating the piston, an inlet pipe connecting the pump body with the liquid reservoir, the solenoid circuit being controlled by the magnetic device described above. For this purpose the piston is connected to the plunger of soft iron, or is provided with an extension, ', comprising a soft iron, which creates, destroys or produces a variation of flux, by its movement between the two faces of a magnet or magnets, thereby actuating the switch armature.

   Means are preferably provided for interrupting the action of the pump when the level of liquid in the container in which the pump delivers exceeds a predetermined height. Such a device may include a float chamber and a connection between the float and the soft iron plunger and / or the piston, so that when the level of the liquid in the float chamber has reached a determined height, the piston and / or the piston. or the plunger are held in their upper position and stop the subsequent pumping, until the level drops again. Thanks to this arrangement we realize

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 automatic interruption and constant level.

   In the preferred embodiment, the pump comprises a priming chamber into which the lower end of the cylindra de pompo enters, as well as a one-way valve which normally allows the only passage of liquid from the priming chamber to the pump. pump cylinder, the float chamber and the priming chamber being arranged concentrically with respect to one another and being connected by a handle forming the cylinder around which the solenoid is mounted.

   The magnet or magnets and / or the armature which will control the switching on or off of the solenoid are located in a closed chamber comprising a central guide, preferably concentric with the pump cylinder in which the soft iron plunger moves. ; but to avoid any manufacturing error, a flexible connection can be made between the piston and the plunger. In order to delay the action of the float, it is possible to provide a container in the form of a gallery provided with a small drainage orifice situated at the face of or in the vicinity of the molten container; in which the liquid flows from the pump, which increases the normal weight of the float.

   In a variant the float chamber is omitted and the pump delivers directly to the desired level} such for example that of a constant level of a carburetor., In this arrangement, preferably, the pump piping is connected to an open chamber. to the atmosphere and containing a float, thanks to which the action of the pump can be reduced or stopped, when the level of the liquid in the chamber rises above a limit determined as a result of a decrease or of the stopping the operation of the pump. The float can be arranged so

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 to actuate a switch opening the circuit of the solenoid, or to positively prevent re-circuiting, or to produce the interruption by engagement with the armature.

   We will see other details in the following description,
It is obvious that a number of pumps according to the present invention can be mounted in series on a pipe, depending on the desired head height.

   The invention, although described in its application to a pump, can obviously be applied for other purposes, in particular for example to level indicators of liquids or to pressure indicators.

   In the accompanying drawings, there is shown by way of non-limiting example a form of application of the subject of the invention.

In fig.l and 2, 1 and 2 are permanent magnets between which is mounted, in order to have a reciprocating movement, a block of iron or wall of magnetic material 3. An armature 5 mounted to rotate around an axis 4 carries a finger 6 intended to come into contact with a point 7 and to open or close a circuit 8.

   It is obvious that the disc 3 by moving between the poles of either of the magnets 1 and 2 will establish a short circuit or a passage for the flux of the magnet, which decreases the external field of said magnet. . Enfig. 1, the magnetic field across the air gap of magnet 2 has been shunted by iron block 3 so that the magnetic attraction of magnet 1 is relatively stronger, thus attracting armature 5 and ending the circuit 8.

   During the movement of block 3 between the poles of magnet 1, its magnetic field will be shunted in the rotation, which creates a relative increase in value or magnetic field.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 tick of the magnet 2, which will thus attract the armature away from the magnet 1. As will be seen below, the circuit 8 can form the circuit of a solenoid controlling the piston of a pump, this piston being thus driven, imparting movement to disc 3 (which may have the shape of an iron plunger and bringing it to the position shown in fig. 2 when magnet 1 is short-circuited. The magnetic attraction of the magnet 2 then becomes more pU: 15 $ ante and attracts armature 5 by cutting circuit 8.

   At each instant, there is therefore an alternating movement of the plunger 3; hence a relative increase in the external magnetic field of one of the magnets 1 and 2, sufficient to tilt the armature 5 and to open or close the circuit 8.

   Instead of permanent magnets, one can use electromagnets whose windings will be continuously energized.

  We can also keep the action of the permanent magnets for example by a few turns of a winding surrounding the magnets
1 and 2 and connected to circuit 8.

   In fig. 3 and 4 show a variant of the mounting of the magnets, 'in which the flux of the two magnets 1 and 2 is used to attract the armature, which substantially amounts to using a magnetic ring in which a magnetic ring is created. opening alternately at two opposite points.

   As seen in fig. 5, the points of contact 6-7 can be so arranged that there is a field of forces in the site of the rupture, so as to quickly eliminate any arc which tends to occur.

   Although for greater clarity it has not been shown in fig.l to 5, it is preferable that the pole faces of the magnets resting on a tube 9 (see 9-10, fig. 6) of a material not magnetic and. in which the plunger 3 can slide freely -

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 is lying. In another arrangement, the plunger or disc 3 can, instead of short-circuiting the flow passage of the two magnets, be used to establish a conductive passage between the two magnets and the armature 5. There is shown in fig 6 such a device comprising a simple magnetic bar 10 terminating in the pole pieces 11 and 12.

   Opposed to the pole pieces 11 and 12, we have two blocks of soft iron 11 'and 12', the plunger 3 sliding in the non-magnetic tube 9 establishes the passage of the flux from 12 to 12 'by attracting the soft iron frame 5 In this variant, it is advantageous to modify the shape of the plunger 3, preferably by tapering it at its ends, so that one end of the reinforcement is not abandoned without the other being subjected to the pressure. attractive force.

   According to another variant, shown in FIG. 7, the plunger 3 may consist of a magnet, the poles of which are alternately moved between or opposed to the pole pieces 13 and 14 towards which the armature 5 is attracted. In this case, the plunger 3 may be shorter than the distance between the pole pieces 13-14 (so that its two ends are alternately opposite the pole pieces) or longer than this distance, so that only one of the poles magnet is used.

   In fig. 7a, another variant has been shown in which the armature 5 is controlled by a spring, a single magnet being used. The power of the spring is such that its action is exceeded by the magnetic attraction of the magnet, until the latter is short-circuited by the plunger 3, when the armature is withdrawn during the magnetic contact by the spring .

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   In the preceding constructions, it has been assumed that the piston of the pump or other reciprocating part controlled by the solenoid returns to its initial position by gravity or by means of springs. In many cases, it may be advantageous to use a switch mechanism to control two adenoids, one of them acting in the opposite direction to the other, which is the case for example with a working pump. - against pressure or a pump to work in any position regardless of gravity.

   For this purpose, the armature 5 can be arranged so as to return normally under the action of a spring to an average position equidistant from the poles of the magnet, the spring being normally weaker than the attraction. magnetic at one of the ends of the armature, but, to prevent the case where the attraction is canceled by two short-circuits, (iron discs for example), the armature returns to the " open "leaving both contact points open. Such a device has been shown in frozen form 8.

   In accordance with Figs 9 and 10, the soft iron plunger is connected to a pump piston 15 slidably mounted in a tube 16 which constitutes the cylinder of the pump. The tube 16 is placed in a casing 17 and is fixed in its position by threaded pieces 18 and 19. The casing 17 is divided into an upper chamber with a float or reservoir 20, and a compartment 21 by a solenoid 22, mounted on the tube. 'outside the tube 16, a window 23 being reserved in the wall of the casing in order to / allow it to be brought into its position.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

   The lower end of the housing 17 carries a bowl 24 fixed by a bracket 25 provided with a retaining screw 26, so that the bowl, which is preferably a glass, can be easily detached for cleaning. The bowl 24 forms a lower chamber 27, 27 'of which is the inlet orifice.

  The lower end of the pump cylinder is closed by a part 19; it has access to the chamber 27 via the one-way valve 28 which allows the passage of liquid from the chamber 27 to the cylinder of the pump.

   Any form of non-reversible valve can be used, but the preferable device preventing deposits between the surfaces of the valve is shown in fig. 19.

   The pump piston 15 consists of a hollow piece of soft iron and forms the solenoid core 22. In the bottom of the piston is another one-way valve 29, holes 30 being arranged at its top to allow the passage of liquid in this piston and from there to the reservoir 20.

   The role of the leakage holes 31 will be described later.

   32 is the outlet of the reservoir, in which a float 33 is provided.

   The float chamber or reservoir 20 is closed by a two-piece housing 34, which forms a cage for the switch mechanism shown in Figs. 1 to 50
The tube 9 of non-magnetic material, in which the switch plunger 3 slides, is fixed at each of its ends in the casing 34 so that the switch mechanism is mounted in a sealed casing; the upper end being closed by a cap 35 forming a vent

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 between the reservoir chamber and the atmosphere. To ensure the closure of this vent, if the pump continues to operate after perforation of the float 33 or for any other cause, a ball of cork or other light material 35 'is placed in this reservoir which is raised and closes the opening, if the liquid reaches this point.

   To avoid having to ensure a precise alignment of the upper tube 9 and the lower tube 16, carrying the pump piston, the plunger or the discs 3 are connected to the pump piston 45 by means of a metal pipe. flexible 36. This tubular connection is used for lubricating the plunger 3, since a little liquid comes out of the tube 36 when the pump piston descends and passes into the plunger 3 through the openings 37. On the plunger 3 or on the tube 36 is mounted a ring 38 capable of being driven by the float 33 when the float chamber is filled.

   The chamber 27 therefore serves as a trap for dross and deposits, and into which the liquid from the reservoir 20 can flow through the valve leaks when the pump is stopped, which happens when the valves 28 and 29 are under the valve. liquid level and therefore closed.

   The operation of the pump is as follows:
When the ends are connected to a battery or to a direct current source 38, current flows through the coil of the solenoid 22 / the contacts 6-7 and the armature 5.

  The excitation of the coil 22 attracts and lifts its core which forms the piston 15 of the pump, closing the valve 29 and opening the valve 28, then sending the liquid into the pump cylinder 16. Qaund this piston 15 rises, it drives with it the plunger or discs 3, and when this disc enters

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 the polar field of the permanent magnet 1, it bypasses the flux between the poles and creates a relative increase in the magnetic attraction at the poles of the lower magnet 2. This variation in flux forces the armature 5 to move upwards, opens contacts 6 and 7 and interrupts the circuit of coil 22.

   The piston 15 then descends by gravity, the liquid passing (after a sufficient number of strokes of the piston) into the openings 30 of the upper end of the piston 15 from where it flows over the walls of the tube 16. in the float chamber. When the piston 15, and therefore the plunger 3 reaches the bottom of its stroke, the passage of the polar flux of the magnet 2 is short-circuited, the attraction towards the polar surface 1 is increased, the armature 5 is tilted, contacts 6-7 are established, coil 22 is energized and piston 15 is pushed again towards the solenoid, it enters the liquid as seen above, it separates from it, it goes down again by gravity and brings a new quantity of liquid into the float chamber If there is no orifice or reduced orifice outside the outlet pipe 32,

  the level will rise until the float is totally or partially submerged, when the float tends to lift, and the piston 15 cannot fall because of the washer 38 which comes into contact with the top surface of the float. This will prevent the plunger 3 from shorting the flow to the pole surface 2, and will also prevent the closing of the contacts 6-7. When a call for liquid is made, liquid escapes through the outlet pipe, float 33 tends to lower, allowing the washer to descend with it, until the plunger

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 3 bypasses the flow to pole surface 2, contacts 6-7 close and pumping begins again.

   In many cases it may be necessary to make the distance between the poles of the magnet greater than the stroke of the pump piston; two discs 3 and 3 '(see fig. 9 and 10) are then used, connected either by a bar, by a tube or by a chain, the upper disc, serving to short-circuit the flow around the polar faces of the upper magnet the lower disc serving to short-circuit the flux towards the pole faces of the lower magnet. It is also possible, when you want to be able to vary the length of the stroke of the pump piston, adjust the distance between these two discs by screwing or sliding one of the discs onto the other, or by any other device increasing the stroke of the pump. pump piston by reducing the distance between the discs or vice versa.

   To force the pump piston to energize and de-energize coil 22 at the most convenient times for effective valve operation and for silence, the position of the pump piston is made variable as a function of plunger 3, a spring can be mounted between these parts.

   It is known that piston pumps of the type described must be primed before departure; so that the pump remains primed in all circumstances, even if the tank from which the pump aspirates, empties or in the event of a rupture or leak in the suction or outlet pipe, the volume of the part of the chamber to floats below the outlet orifice is greater than or equal to the volume of the chamber 27

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 minus the lower part at lu noupapo 28.

   The liquid therefore descends from the float chamber into this trap, when the pump stops for a moment, because of the leaks through the holes 31 and the valves 28 and 29, When the pump stops thus, a certain volume of liquid is contained either in the float chamber and in the cylinder and piston of the pump or in the lower chamber 27 and up to a level such that both valves and the lower part of the piston are submerged.

  It can be seen that the inlet pipe is disposed at a point close to the end of the piston at the bottom of its stroke.

   In fig. 9 and 10, the tubes 9 and 16 are united into a single tube 39 passing through the switch mechanism, the float and the lower chambers. The operation of the pump is then modified, and the piston is lifted by the action of a spring 40 and sucked up and down by the solenoid 22, the piston 15 and the plunger 3 being connected to each other. by a tube of non-magnetic material. Openings are made in the portion of tube 39 which passes into the float chamber.

  An extension of the lower end of piston 15 passes through the center of spring 40 and returned to a point low enough to allow submersion of valve 29 which is carried by this extension. We practice openings for the arrival and exit .as described above. Any of the methods described below can be used to stop the operation of the pump, but this device allows, as will be seen, a more homogeneous grouping. If a float is employed to maintain the weight of the piston 15 and a plunger 3, a slot is cut in this tube 39, an appendage of the float engaging in this slot.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

   It is evident that the float 33, instead of being able to move freely with respect to the piston 15, can be connected directly to the piston and to the plunger 3, as shown in fig.ll.

   In fig.12, the plunger 3 is only actuated by the float 33, and the piston 15 is separated so that it is always free to return to its initial position.

   The upper surface of the float 33 is preferably constructed as shown in Fig.9, with a reservoir or gallery 331 into which the liquid is supplied by the pump piston. Bringing liquid into this gallery virtually increases the weight of the float which is prevented from rising as long as the level in the tank is higher than it should otherwise be. A small opening is made in the reservoir or gallery, through which the liquid can escape. If the tank flow rate is greater than the pump capacity, the float is submerged when its lightness becomes equal to its natural weight regardless of the liquid contained in the gallery.

   The float rises again, if the level in the tank rises and activates or stops the pump by the means described above. This gallery gives rise to an increase in the moments of pumping, and of non-pumping on a restricted orifice.

   Instead of using a mechanical form of float actuated shutter, to interrupt operation when the pump has filled the float chamber or other container which can be carried in the pump itself, or when the liquid has reached a or-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 17>

 calf or load, as would be necessary to maintain the level in a vaporizer or carburetor, the magnets can (fig. 13) be provided with protrusions at their lower pole surfaces and a float 41 suspended in the liquid can be used for lifting an iron ring 42 and bringing it into magnetic contact with poles 1 and 2, so as to prevent the lower end of the magnets from going beyond the armature 5 and thus closing the contact points
6.7, regardless of the position of the plunger 3.

   In a variant shown in fig. 14 a permanent magnet 43 is carried in the dull float, so that the closing movement of the armature is also prevented regardless of the position of the plunger 3. In this form of construction the force of the Magnet 43 can be maintained by adjusting its polarity and position in juxtaposition with the solenoid plunger.

   In an alternative, the float 41 can be arranged so as to lift a soft iron mounted inside a non-magnetic tube 39, to short-circuit the flux on the lower pole ends of the magnets 1, 2.

   In another form (fig. 15), a soft iron core 44 can be mounted adjacent to the outer surface of the lower end of the frame 5, this body magnetizing by means of a permanent magnet 45 by placing in magnetic contact with the soft iron core and the permanent magnet, by means of a soft iron lever 46 actuated by a float 47 placed

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 in the container. When a pump as described above has to deliver liquid at atmospheric pressure, an orifice is provided between the float chamber or pump container and the atmosphere, as shown for example in Figs. 9 and 10.

  When, however, the pump must deliver at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure, no orifice is provided and, to ensure that the action of the pump is interrupted when the pressure has reached any maximum determined in advance, the The pump body has a closed diaphragm or a closed chamber, the contraction of which - under the effect of pressure - will serve to reduce its buoyancy and this decrease can be used to short-circuit the magnets or to interrupt the action of the pump in the same way as the float-buoy mode described above.

   Alternatively the diaphragm may be mounted on any part of the pressure flow piping, such that the diaphragm extension cuts off the solenoidal operation circuit of the pump.

   According to another embodiment, the action of this crosstalk can be used to press or abut against the movable armature 5 of the switch mechanism.

   In fig. 10,16 ot 17 the pompo piston 15 which glisso on a tube 39 'is provided with an extension in the form of a bowl 48 in the bottom of which is a valve 29 consisting of a cage 49 with 50 feet in which we have stamped. curved tabs 51 capable of engaging with a valve disc 52. The lower surface of this disc forms a seal

 <Desc / Clms Page number 19>

 sealed with the seat of the valve at the bottom of the marsh 48. On arrival of the liquid through the orifice located at the foot of the handle, the disc 52 is raised sufficiently for the admission of the liquid, but is retained by the tabs 51 on the cage 49. The liquid passes through the spaces left between the feet of the cage inside the tube 39 '. The handle 48 is held in position by the pressure of a rossort 40.

   Fig. 18 shows a detailed view of a construction of the valve 28. The locking nut 19 has therein a number of stepped projections 53 which act as both a seat for a plate 54 and guide for a valve disc 55. Plate 54 is held in position by spring 40. The liquid flows through the passages which are located between the projections 53 and around the outer edges of the plate 54. If necessary, light compression springs can be interposed between the plate 54 and the disc 55 (fig. 18) and between the disc 52 and the projecting tabs of the cage 49 (fig. 16).

   In the bowl 24 (fig. 20) is provided a mesh 56 fixed beyond the end of the pump cylinder or its extension and the inlet valve 28; this mesh prevents the entry of dust.

   When the pump is off, leaks past the piston and valve 28 will cause the liquid to return to the tube 27 and submerge the piston valve 29 and valve 28 as described above. If the pump is running, the level of the liquid in chamber 27 will drop to an anoint near the lower extreme level of valve 28.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 20>

 and one can mark, on the wall of the chamber 27 which is made of glass, a line a-b indicating; this "normal level of walking".

  Thus, while walking, all the liquid is directed through that part of the screen located below the ab line, and over time particles of dust or water will clog the mesh of the screen. When this happens the liquid level will gradually rise above line a - b, to pass through, and over time, plug the nut above this line. A second c-d line may be marked on the container to indicate the need to clean or renew the mesh when the liquid has reached this line. These lines could also be shown on a scale inside the cuvette 24.

   In fig. 21 and 22 show another embodiment of the device for interrupting the action of the pump. Although the arrangements of Figs. 9, 11 and 12 are perfectly satisfactory, they can have the disadvantage that the float, rising with the level of the liquid, will gradually decrease the stroke of the piston before stopping completely and there is noise because the ring 38 comes into contact with the surfaces of the float with each downward movement.

   In freezes 21 and 22, the float 33 which is mounted on the handle 39, has a conical bore, orifices 58 are drilled in the handle - (orifices which can replace the leakage holes) and are intended to receive the balls 59. On the pump piston is mounted a member or extension 60 which can connect the piston and the plunger 3; this extension is in substance non-magnetic and comprises a conical part 61 arranged so that when the balls 59 come into contact

 <Desc / Clms Page number 21>

 with this part 61, the plunger 3 is prevented from falling and re-establishing the solenoid circuit.

   When the float chamber is empty, the float is in the position shown in fig. 21. As soon, however, as the chamber fills up the float 33 rises and reaches, when the chamber is full, a position in which the balls 59 are prevented, owing to the small diameter of the bore 57, from moving in the direction of the chamber. outside. During the descent of the piston - and as a result of the plunger - the balls 59 are no longer free to move away from the part 61 and the piston is thus prevented from falling; it is maintained in the position indicated in fig 22.

  As the level in the float chamber drops, float 33 descends and allows balls 59 to move outward to thereby release the piston.

   Fig. 23 shows an application of the invention to a level indicating apparatus. 61 is a chamber in which it is necessary to indicate or control the liquid level and on one of the arms of a lever 62 is mounted a float 63, while the other arm is connected to the disc or soft iron plunger 3, which is slidably mounted in a sealed member 64. The organ 64 carries the permanent magnets 1 and 2.

   The rise and fall of liquid in chamber 61 will produce a variation in the liquid level and consequently the movement of the plunger 3, depending on its position), and will short-circuit the magnetic flux and actuate the armature 5 which controls the circuit 8 .-
It should be noted that the switch mechanism comprising the armature 8 is entirely separate from the interior

 <Desc / Clms Page number 22>

 chamber 61 and in some cases it may be desirable to completely enclose the mechanism in a housing, as shown in phantom.

   According to a variant of the invention, shown in FIG. 24, the float chamber 20 is removed and the pump

' diruobuttiont to nlvou.u d0: Jll'b, as for example the constant level of a carburetor, for this purpose a one-way valve 65 is provided in the piston and the guide indicated here at 66 and in which the piston and the soft iron plunger (or magnet) move, is connected directly, by one of its ends, to the suction and the flow pipe shown at 67 and 68 respectively.

   A priming chamber and a filter, as described above, can be interposed between the suction and the guide. A channel 69 or other similar openings is or are provided in the plunger 3 to allow the passage of the sucked liquid. It is obvious that the pump shown in fig. 24 operates in the same way as in fig. 9, in which the plunger 3 was lifted by a solenoid, against the action of gravity.

   Fig. 25 shows a similar variant corresponding to the operation described with respect to FIG. 10, and in which the active stroke of the piston is due to the action of a spring 70, from which it is withdrawn by the solenoid. In this case the flow takes place at the lower end of the guide handle.

   According to another characteristic of the invention there are provided members by which the solenoid which controls the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 23>

 Movement of the plunger or the electric mechanism actuating the pump system, for application to internal combustion engines, is disconnected or interrupted when the operation of the pump decreases or ceases.

   When the pump does not have a central float chamber and a switch such as those shown in fig. 24 and 25, the action of the pump does not cease when the actuation is interrupted or ceases or when the orifice of outlet is closed, since the piston will continue to oscillate, albeit slowly, against the charge of liquid already delivered and leaks pass the valves and piston. When this does not cause any inconvenience, the maximum pressure which can be achieved can be determined by the force of the spring used to lift the liquid in the form shown in fig 25.

   However, preferably, a chamber 71 is provided for normal operation (see fig. 26, 27 and 28) connected to the outlet side of the pump and into which the liquid is delivered by the pump; this chamber (which will hereinafter be called an “atmospheric chamber”) has on its upper surface a vent or orifice 72 open to the atmosphere.

   In fig. 26 this chamber, mounted at a suitable height above the pump, has a simple pipe 73 connecting it to the pipe 68, between the pump and the carburetor (not shown) or the last pump chamber. Alternatively, the chamber 71 can be mounted on or in the pump itself or it can be mounted in the piping 68, as shown in fig 27 so that all the liquid delivered by the pump passes through this atmospheric chamber, 6'-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 24>

Inside this chamber is arranged a float 74 articulated or guided freely, and arranged so as to rise when the liquid rises in the atmospheric chamber.

   The vent 72 which communicates with the atmosphere can be blocked by the ball-buoy 75 - (fig. 28) which emerges, as described above, or the float can be constructed so that before the level has reached this vent, the latter is closed by a valve or a needle carried by the float, or by a valve or disc actuated by the rising float and arranged so that in the event that the automatic interruption described above were to fail, discharge of liquid through the vent is prevented.

   It is known that if the vent of this atmospheric chamber is closed, the pressure therein will rise and as may be desirable to flow the liquid to the carburetor or other device at a pressure greater than the atmosphere - for example to prime. , cleanse or enrich the mixture by acceleration or to inject liquid, there are provided, in accordance with another characteristic of the invention, organs such as levers to close the vent or atmospheric orifice and which can be controlled from the control panel. on board or on the other hand, or by the accelerator pedal, by a connecting rod or a cable, or by the starting device, so that the liquid can, if desired, be delivered under pressure.

   According to a variant (fig. 26) the vent of the atmospheric chamber is closed by a valve 76 provided in the piping and which connects the chamber with the pump, so as to prevent the entry of liquid into said chamber.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 25>

   The float 74 of the atmospheric chamber actuates a soft iron plunger or disc 3 which bypasses the magnetic flux of one or more permanent magnets, as described above, so as to control the movement of an armature d. 'another magnet and to open the circuit or actuation mechanism of the pump. Obviously, any other form of switch could be used.

   An armature controlled by a spring can be used as shown in fig. 7a; or, as a spring the armature can be tilted in one direction by a weight and instead of an iron plunger the float can carry an iron plate, disc or bar or be built entirely or partially made of iron, so that being lifted by the liquid it short-circuits the flow and releases the contact.

   In another form, the float can be made so as to lift one or more permanent magnets placed in the atmospheric chamber so as to be moved or mounted until they abut against the wall or casing of the chamber and a frame. hinged or elastic iron can be moved towards the magnet when the float lifts; contact occurs when the armature is open.

   Such an arrangement is shown in fig. 29, in which the float 74 carries a magnet 77 which controls an inclined spring armature 78,
According to another form (fig. 30) the magnet or magnets can be mounted on the float, or be actuated by the latter, so that when the level rises, it moves away

 <Desc / Clms Page number 26>

 the magnets of the elastic member placed outside the container, the armature moving outward and opening the circuit.

   In order to ensure continuity in the magnetization, a few turns of the wire, as described above, can be wound around any of the permanent windings described, so as to ensure the recharging of the magnetomotive force when the contacts are closed. and the pump in action.

   When the magnet is driven by the float, current can pass through a few turns of wire around the atmospheric chamber itself.

   In fig. 31 shows a pump completed by a mechanism ensuring that the closing of the valve (s), vents does not coincide with the position of the float in the atmospheric chamber, when the float is fully raised and the contacts open. For this purpose, the valve or vent closing mechanism is arranged so as to actuate a switch 79 bypassing the switch normally actuated by the atmospheric chamber.

   The atmospheric chamber can be of very small dimensions, so that the volume of fluid (gasoline) which is then maintained in the chamber is very small and a fuse can be placed in circuit with the switch of this atmospheric chamber. which, when the ambient temperature exceeds - for example in the event of a fire - a predetermined maximum, melts or bends by opening the pump circuit and stops pumping.

   It is understood that the arrangement of an atmospheric chamber containing a float which magnetically actuates a switch when the liquid level reaches a determined height, can be provided to open or close a circuit, as is the case.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 27>

 desires and to actuate indicators such as a lamp or other electrically controlled device, indicating when the level in question is reached, or when the level has fallen below a determined height. This atmospheric chamber can also be used to indicate the level of water in the radiator of an automobile and / or of oil or gasoline or any other liquid contained in a container.

   Fig. 32 shows a specific form of switch or mechanism for stopping the action of the pump in which the solenoid, the circuit switch is positively open or whose closing or operation is prevented.

   According to another embodiment, a float fitted to actuate, when the chamber is full or when the level has exceeded a determined limit, has been fitted in the chamber in which the pump discharges - or in a chamber provided for this purpose. , an organ which positively prevents the closing of the solenoid circuit or which produces its rupture.

   In fig. 32 the discharge pipe 68 may be in the form of an upturned U and discharge into a discharge chamber 80 fixed to the side of the main pump housing and in this chamber is mounted a float 81.

   A lever 82 pivoted at 83 is fixed to the float 81 or engages with it when the latter rises, said lever passes through the main casing of the pump. A finger 84 of elastic material is fixed at 83, preferably adjacent to the pivoting frame 5, and this finger comes, when the axis 83 rotates as a result of the rise of the float, to land against the lower part of the frame.

   In a variant the axis 83 drives a lever connected to the frame by means of a spring, so that the rotation of the axis puts the spring in a position to prevent the movement of the frame.

   In another variant, the rotation of the axis 85 causes a weight or a ball mounted on the axis to fall beyond the dead center and abut, on one of the sides of this center, against the frame, either directly or by means of a suitable linkage,
In the construction described above, or in equivalent constructions, the operation is such that the float 81, when rising, will ensure - by means of the lever to which it is fixed or with which it engages to placing an obstacle in the path of the armature, with the result that the latter is thus prevented from moving into the position closing the circuit of the pump solenoid. The action of the pump is thus interrupted when the level of the liquid in the discharge chamber reaches a limit determined in advance.

   In a variant, the lever, either directly or by an appropriate linkage, opens the circuit of the pump solenoid coil anyway, for example by inserting an insulating wedge between the contact points of the rod. mature. It is practically observed that, if the armature is in the closed position when the lever is actuated by the float, the action exerted by the lever is not sufficient to introduce the wedge between the contact points, and therefore that the wedge does not enter until the return stroke of the piston causes the contacts to separate. It is evident that the pump flow is ultimately taken from the bottom of the discharge chamber.

   It is possible, if desired, to provide devices for delaying the action of the float, for example a gallery with exhaust holes as shown in FIG. , 9.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 29>

In fig. 33, we see another variant, according to which the liquid does not pass through the pump, the pump cylinder being formed by a pipe 85. In this case $ one-way valves 86 and 87 are respectively arranged in the pipes d suction and outlet 67 and 68. The pump piston 15 is provided with a central passage 88 which is closed during the suction stroke of the pump by the engagement of the upper end of the piston with the piston. lower face of a floating part 89. The float 89 is preferably made of cork and supports the soft iron plunger 3 to alternately short circuit the magnetic fields of the magnets 1 and 2, for the rest, the operation is substantially the same. even.

   To allow the passage of the liquid beyond the float, a groove 89 'can be cut in this plunger 3; a central vent can also be provided in the float.

   The pump cylinder may have, as shown, a float valve 90 to prevent overflow 91 and a check valve in the outlet pipe.

   When, during operation, the outlet port downstream of the valve 87 is not throttled, the liquid level in the cylinder 85 falls and the float 83 remains on the piston 15, closing the passage 88; the contacts 6 and 7 close and the pump continues its stroke sucking the liquid through the valve 86 and the. discharging through valve 87.

   As soon as the outlet 91 is closed or the flow rate is reduced, the liquid rises by the piston 15 and causes the float 89 to float, which interrupts the active stroke of the piston. The falling speed of the float is regulated by the quantity of fuel flowing through the valve-87 and it is seen, therefore, that

 <Desc / Clms Page number 30>

 the stroke of the piston is shortened and when the outlet is completely closed at 91, the float remains suspended on the liquid and the pumping ceases.

   The piston 15 may be provided with a magnetically actuated valve 92 (fig. 34) which may be a steel ball, so that when the winding 22 is energized the ball is brought into contact magnetically with the ball. piston 15 and plugs the lower end of the channel passing through the latter.

   In another variation (Figs. 35,36) the piston 15 may include a gravity actuated valve 93 normally resting on a seat at the bottom of the piston. In fig. The sphere 93 is spaced from its seat by a rod 94 when the piston is in its lowest extreme position, allowing the liquid to flow from the cylinder, when at 87 there is a call after a period of stopping the cylinder. pumping. In fig. 36 of the leakage holes 95 are normally closed but are exposed when the piston is in its lowest extreme position.
