 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

On peutaussi employer

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Electric control for rolling mill machines.

  The machines in present-day rolling mills, for example rolling mill machines, roll rollers, straightening devices, rulers, shears, have the harshest conditions for their drive motors and especially for their drives. starting devices. These controls, which are primarily used for mass acceleration, are called acceleration controls. The machines of these factories are constantly in the working state of the acceleration of their masses. After the acceleration is terminated, the control is braked, reversed and accelerated again in the opposite direction. In this way, the current rolling mill orders make over a thousand changes per hour.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The three-phase motor suffices as a control machine for these requirements. But it is very difficult to find suitable dispensing devices. This is for two reasons: First, the distribution apparatus has large dimensions, because the energy it controls is large due to the large quantity of energy constantly consumed and passing through the starter. Second, it is under heavy mechanical stress due to the frequency of change.

  The best solution currently employed consists of heavy distribution by electric valves, which include a lot of materials and in which a high capital investment has to be invested, and whose maintenance and supervision represent a high cost.

   The invention is that an impedance starter is used in combination with the three-phase motor generally used for rolling mill controls.

   The impedance starter is known. It has heretofore been rarely used because in combination with normal constant-running motors it has serious drawbacks: It reduces the possibility of overloading the control, causes greater slip and greater reception of the watt-watted current from the motor at permanent state of service.

   It is only the use of the impedance starter according to the invention which makes it possible to use those of its properties which are not manifested in use for normal motors, but provide it for the acceleration commands. a manifest superiority over the starting devices hitherto employed in machines of this kind. This property resides in the high load capacity of the impedance starter following the elimination of any mechanical load, and as a result of sound. great heat transfer power. These advantages

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 mean that the disadvantages that arise, with a permanent load, no longer enter into account in the acceleration controls.

   In order to allow the maximum use in the application according to the invention, the impedance starter is calculated for a great heat transfer power and for a great starting moment.

   The control resembles, with regard to simplicity from a mechanical point of view, squirrel-cage armature motors for high starting power (parasitic current armature, multi-squirrel cage armature).

  However, the superiority of the control of the invention over these motors, decisive superiority for acceleration controls, comes from the fact that the starting power transformed into heat does not remain in the motor but in is evacuated, so that the drive motor has economical dimensions. The three-phase motor with impedance starter can then take the control of the rolling mill to a high number of strokes, so that the efficiency and production of the rolling machines can be increased compared to controls having the usual starting devices.

   Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing shows schematically the control of the present invention.

   10 designates an asynchronous three-phase motor, which drives the rolling mill machine. 11, 12 designate the two valves or reversing switches, through which the motor stator is supplied from the three-phase network 13.

  14, 15, 16 designate the three slip rings of the rotor. 17 designates an iron core with three branches of solid iron or of laminated iron. 18, 19, 20 denote three reactance coils which are each wound on a branch of the iron core 17 and are coupled in parallel with ohmic resistors 21, 22, 23. The reactance coils form together with the ohmic resistance

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 the impedance starter which is permanently connected to the rotor slip rings. The start-up and acceleration process is as follows:
When the motor is connected to the network by. closing of one of the main valves 11 and 12, which must be reciprocally blocked, the maximum secondary voltage, having the full frequency of the network, is generated in the rotor at 1.1, stop.

   With this high frequency, the reactance coils 18, 19, 20, located in the phases, represent a strong inductive resistance for the current of the rotor, so that at start-up most of the current passes through the ohmic resistors. 21, 22, 23. As a result, there is a strong moment of attraction. The inductive resistance decreases in the reactance coils as the motor accelerates, so that an ever greater part of the rotor current passes through the reactance coils. In the end the reactance coils act in the vicinity of synchronism almost like a short circuit for the chemical resistors.

   By gradually decreasing the resistance of the rotor with the increase in the number of revolutions, an almost constant starting or acceleration moment is obtained from standstill to the normal number of revolutions of the engine. To ensure a full understanding of the conditions, the diagram of fig. 2 the rotation moment curve Di of a motor with an impedance starter and the Ds curve of a motor with a step starter. The rotational moments were plotted on the horizontal axis as a percentage of the full load moment, and on the vertical axis were the number of revolutions as a percentage of the full number of revolutions.

   The moment of. rotation Dm is the mean value of the moments of rotation Ds; with this moment of rotation the motor would accelerate to the final speed at the same time as with the starting moment.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 according to the curve Ds. However, the motor with an impedance starter (curve Di) accelerates, with the same temperature rise, in a shorter time at final speed than the motor with a step starter (Ds). The last two starting degrees of the degree starter are shown in phantom lines, because in order to save money on heavy distribution devices (valves), these degrees do not exist. Consequently, the maximum speed achievable with the impedance starter is higher than with the step starter.

   With the impedance starter one can obtain an approximately constant acceleration moment. This property is important for accelerated controls, in particular for controlling the rolling mill machines mentioned above. As described, the control of these machines consists of an uninterrupted series of starts. It is therefore a matter of making the start-up process as technically perfect as possible. On the other hand, keeping the control within the range of full load is quite secondary.

   The technical superiority of the starting control with a constant acceleration moment, compared to the control with a gradually varying starting moment, consists above all in that the engine works during the whole starting with its full moment. boot, and is therefore used in the most perfect way. The starting time decreases with the same heating of the engine and the starter. In addition, all mechanical and electrical shocks and all maximum are avoided; operation is quiet.

   In order for the starter to be able to withstand the large amounts of waste heat continuously given off in the throttle drives, it can be established with a large heat abduction area, due to the cooling area of its resistors. is large in relation to their mass. We can also use

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 special cooling surfaces or artificial cooling.

   As the starter does not have any parts to. mechanical movement, it suffices to calculate it taking into account only the electrical and thermal requirements. Consequently, it does not have large dimensions, which gives it a marked superiority over heavy valve distributions. As its operation is fully automatic, no demands are placed on the skill of the operator. In addition, the starter does not include control contacts, so that the difficulties hitherto resulting from the combus- tion of the contacts with the high frequency of operations and the high current intensities and large voltage differences. between the degree contacts of the degree starters are deleted.

   Consequently the control according to the invention is a control of great technical value for rolling mill machines with the current service requirements of the large number of changes. The starter device is also small in size, needs a minimum of supervision and requires only low maintenance and repair costs.
