<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Improvements to nozzles for vacuum cleaners"
This invention relates to nozzles for vacuum cleaners. We know that the efficiency of a vacuum cleaner depends essentially on the good contact of its squeegee with the surface to be cleaned and that this condition is rarely fulfilled in vacuum cleaners comprising an independent squeegee, connected to the apparatus by a flexible pipe. and by a rigid tube which serves as a handle to handle it.
Only an optimum inclination of this handle ensures good contact of the nozzle, unless the latter has an articulated joint where it connects to the handle. This solution is, however, imperfect, since the seal having to be very mobile, it is not possible to give it sufficient sealing to prevent the occurrence of inflows of air which reduce the power of the gasket. aspiration.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the present invention, a good result is obtained in a simple manner by providing the nozzle with a handle which is not part of the suction line and by articulating this handle to the nozzle so that it can pivot. relative to the latter when walking it on the ground. This eliminates the inconvenience of the articulated joint in the nozzle and, by using an angled or articulated handle, it is easy to introduce the nozzle under the lowest and widest pieces of furniture without bending down, which no known device does. used to do so far.
The nozzle may have a stabilizer pad to prevent it from tipping over. Preferably, this pad is formed by the end of the nozzle outlet of the nozzle which is then lying on the ground. A simple fork can be used to connect the squeegee handle, but for cleaning under furniture, it is advantageous to use long rods forming an obtuse angle with the handle and extending a short distance from the ground over a certain length. These rods are articulated with the nozzle and can also be articulated with the handle, as well as at an intermediate point of their length. They frame the flexible hose of the vacuum cleaner which, preferably, is supported by the handle to prevent wear by friction on the floor.
In some cases, the handle and sometimes the rods can be provided with support rollers to make the device easier to handle.
Various embodiments are shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show respectively in rear view, in side view and in plan, a nozzle of known type to which the invention is applied.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 represent a new type nozzle, respectively in rear view, in vertical section and in plan.
Figs. 7, 8 and 9 show variants of this new type of nozzle in rear view, in side view and in vertical section, respectively.
Fig.10 is an overall view, in side elevation, of a device according to the invention.
Figsoll and 12 are views of a detail of this device, respectively in side elevation and in front elevation.
Figs. 13 and 14 on the one hand and Figs. 15 and 16 on the other hand, are partial views of variants of this device, each time in side and front elevation, respectively.
The nozzle 1 of known type shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is provided in accordance with the invention with a handle 2 to which it is articulated by pivots 3 which pass through the branches 4 of the fork terminating this handle 2 and with lugs 6 formed on either side of the mouth of the sucker. When this nozzle is moved on the ground by means of the handle 2, it rests on a stabilizer pad 6 fixed behind its mouth and does not come off the ground under the thrust of the handle, thanks to the joints 3. As well as seen in the drawing, the handle 2 is independent of the flexible pipe 7 which connects the. outlet pipe 8 of the squeegee to the vacuum cleaner, and fits into this pipe of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
usual way.
This simple device is already an improvement over those currently known, but it does not allow cleaning under furniture without bending down.
In order to achieve this latter object, the nozzles shown in FIGS. 4 to 9 and the devices shown in Figs. 10 and following.
These suckers differ from those of the ordinary type in that their. outlet pipe 9 is lying down instead of being erect and thus offers the nozzle, behind its mouth, a support which ensures perfect stability for it in the position for which the mouth is in intimate contact with the ground. A bead 10 can be formed at the end of this lying tubing 9 to constitute a stabilizing pad similar to the pad 6 of the nozzle of Figs. 1 to 3.
In Fig. 10, the nozzle 11 into which the flexible suction pipe 12 is fitted in the usual way, is connected by two long rods 13 to a handle 14 to which these rods are fixed rigidly, at an obtuse angle, by a mount 15. The latter, in the form of a stirrup (Figs. 11 and 12), contains a flexible ring 16 through which passes the pipe 12 which is thus supported by the handle 14 when the latter is lifted into the position. represented.
The handle 14 can be raised or lowered at will without taking the nozzle 11 off the ground, thanks on the one hand to the flexibility of the pipe 12 and on the other hand to the fact that the rods 13 are articulated to the nozzle by one or more pivots 17 placed at an appropriate point on the nozzle, preferably close to its mouth. This or these pivots 17 can take @

4 to 8 where they are engaged in a boss 18 behind the mouth 19 (Figs. 5), or else outside in one or more ears 20 (Fig. 9) formed for example above the mouth 19 They may have some play in their housing to avoid the need to lubricate the joint.
In Figs. 13, 14, the frame 15 is provided with rubberized washers 21 which support the device, and in Figs. 15, 16 the rods 13 are articulated on the axes 22 of these rollers 21 so that the handle 14 can be tilted without risking lifting the nozzle 11 by means of the rods. For the same purpose, the latter may comprise several parts articulated to one another as shown in FIG. 8.
These parts 13 and 13a are interconnected by pins 23 which can serve as axes for rollers 24 which help to support the device. We can also prevent. lifting of the squeegee by lengthening in the vertical direction the holes made in the squeegee for the pivot (s) 17 (Fig. 9).
Whatever the form of construction adopted, it is easy to see that it is possible, by means of the handle 14 and the rods 13, to direct the nozzle 11 at will on the ground without it coming off it and also the '' insert under low and deep furniture without having to bend down.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the details of execution described and shown by way of examples and one could for example use a simple neck handle.

die instead of a straight handle and rods, or make other modifications without departing from the present invention.
