 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

     La¯dernière série de tirs notés dans la table montre la combinaison d'une poudre ne contenant pas de sulfate de

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

  "Improvements with ballistic powders !!.

   The invention relates to a method for suppressing the glare at the muzzle of cannons and to an improved balis- tic powder, to which is incorporated an amount of anti-glare salt insufficient by itself to suppress the glare. , but which, in combination with a supplement of anti-glare salt, suppresses the glow to the desired extent without changing the ballistic characteristics of the powder.

   The use of potassium chloride added in packets to the powder charge, mainly at night, for glow suppression was well known during the World War. It is also well known that relatively large additions of potassium chloride or other salts

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 are necessary when salt is added in this way, and these large additions seriously affect the ballistic qualities of the powder charge. Another drawback is that the anti-glare effect is accompanied by the release of a large volume of white smoke.

   This is all the more true as the amount of potassium chloride or the like required to suppress glow, when added in packet form, can reach 8-10% by weight of the powder charge, or even more.

   It seems that the mechanism for removing the glow has not been fully understood so far.

  In the smallest guns, the anti-glare effect was obtained by lowering the combustion temperature of the powder by the addition of various organic cooling agents and by mineral salts, in particular salts containing considerable quantities of screaming water. - tallization. The use of larger amounts of the same ingredients in powders for larger guns has generally not been successful from a glare suppression standpoint, and these large amounts of added special ingredients have had a detrimental influence on the ballistic properties of the powder.

   It is not generally taken into account that the value of potassium and sodium salts for suppressing glow in powders is mainly due to the fact that the salts of these metals, particularly those of potassium, oppose each other. to the oxidation of carbon monoxide by oxygen in the air.

   The disadvantage of the concentration of an anti-glare salt in packets is that the anti-glare salt is concentrated

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 combustible gases in a given area and that frequently it is not distributed uniformly through the entire volume of combustible gases. In addition, the conditions are favorable for a melting or agglomeration of the whole salt package, which increases the probability that the salt will not be found uniformly distributed throughout the mass of gas and that a part gas ignites. Therefore, this glow suppression process requires an excessive amount of anti-glare salt, which significantly reduces the ballistic properties of the powder.

   The glow is due to the ignition of combustible gases, especially carbon monoxide and hydrogen, formed during the combustion of smokeless powders, when the hot gases come out of the muzzle of the barrel and come. - do not come into contact with oxygen in the air. The glow from the muzzle of a cannon is a typical gas explosion and gives rise to a glow which, at night, illuminates the cannon and the surroundings and reveals the position of the cannon to the enemy. The ignition of these combustible gases at the muzzle of the gun can be avoided in the case of small arms by firing in a carbonic acid atmosphere. When the white glow is removed this way or another, only a slight redness appears at the muzzle of the barrel.

  This swelling is not very visible and can be easily hidden.

   The increasing use of airplanes and photography in modern warfare means that the amount of smoke must be reduced to a minimum. The glow at the muzzle of the cannon during the day is not a serious drawback, A ---

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 but smoke visible or capable of being photographed during the day is as harmful as glow at night.

   The main object of the invention is a method for removing glare.

   Another object of the invention is to obtain an improved powder which, while producing a glow during the day, can be easily made anti-glow at night, without thereby seriously reducing the ballistic properties of the powder charge and, in in addition, without giving rise to excessive smoke, which is at all times very harmful to gunners.

   According to another characteristic of the invention, a ballistic nitro-cellulose powder is used, which while having a very reduced hygroscopicity, can be dried not only in air but also in hot water, in order to remove more more quickly and efficiently added volatile solvents, to facilitate the passage of nitro-cellulose in the colloidal state.

   These characteristics are obtained by the. present invention, and it will be seen that a relatively small amount of an anti-glare salt uniformly incorporated into the colloid is very effective in suppressing glow, as described below, By incorporating an insufficient amount of anti-glare salt into the powder. -glow, the powder will usually (and preferably always) give rise to a certain glow. In this way, the inconvenience of smoke during daylight firing is avoided because the smoke is volatilized by the combustion which produces the glow.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   However, the incorporation of a certain amount of anti-glow salt, while insufficient to suppress the glow, ensures the uniform distribution of this small amount of salt through the gases of the powder. However, it has further been found that adding a relatively small make-up of salt to the powder charge completely suppresses glow. In this way, the anti-glare effect can be easily obtained at will, either during daytime shooting, or during night shooting, simply by adding to the powder charge a small additional amount of the salt already incorporated. with colloid. In this way, the anti-glow effect is obtained without practical change of the initial speed and the pressure of the powder and at the same time with a minimum amount of smoke.

   The potassium salts meet these conditions very satisfactorily, but other anti-glare salts, in particular the alkali metal salts, can be used, as indicated below. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that powder of the type indicated above is particularly suitable for guns in which the powder is loaded separately into silk bags, since in this case it is easy to remove. add to the load an extra potassium sulphate or other anti-glare salt when it is desired to remove the glow.

   The anti-glare effect can be easily obtained with small amounts of potassium sulfate (1/3 to 1/2 part) provided that additional potassium sulfate is then added to the powder charge as indicated. below.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   Excellent results can be obtained by including in the powder approximately 0.5% of an alkaline salt which is not hygroscopic for a maximum relative humidity of 90% at room temperature; this amount of salt has no detrimental effect on the ballistic properties of the powder.

   The example below shows one embodiment of the invention, but should not be considered as an imitation: a powder of the following composition:
85 parts of nitro-cellulose at 13.15% nitrogen
10 parts of dinitrotoluene
5 parts dibutyl phthalate
1 part of diphenylamine
1/3 to 1/2 part of potassium sulfate invariably gives rise to a strong glow when fired-into the 155 m / m GPF gun, with the 43 kilogram projectile using a 1.365 primer. grams, with a 226 gram black hunting powder igniter.

   In order for the invention to be more clearly understood, a table of ballistic results and other data has been given below.

 : In the first four series of tests mentioned in the previous table, the same category of powder was used. The weight of the charge, chosen for the first shots, gave inferior results of about 5m / sec. to those of the standard powder with which the comparison shot was made, and this was compensated for in subsequent shots by adding 57 grams of powder more.

   In the second and third series of tests, potassium sulfate was added in the form of compressed 0.3 gram tablets, the total amount being enclosed in a silk bag and the bag attached to the end of the bag. 'containing the powder charge, so as to be near the projectile. 57 grams of potassium sulphate added in this way gave two out of three non-glow hits, while 85 grams of salt gave five out of 5 non-glow hits.

   In the fourth round of shots 113 grams of air-dried colloidal nitrocellulose, containing 50% or 57 grams of potassium sulphate, were added to a silk bag and 5 out of 5 glow-less shots were obtained. The lower amount of potassium sulphate required to suppress glow when sulphate is added in the above manner should be explained by the fact that the potassium sulphate is gradually released to the powder gases during combustion. and is more evenly distributed throughout the volume of gas. This way of obtaining a more uniform distribution of potassium sulphate through the powder gases is a particular feature of the invention.

     The last series of shots noted in the table shows the combination of a powder not containing

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 potassium incorporated into it, with 226 grams of colloidal nitro-cellulose containing 50%, or 113 grams, of potassium sulfate incorporated into the nitro-celluloseo The anti-glow effect was obtained for only three shots out of five.

  Higher amounts, up to 452 grams of 50% potassium sulphate colloidal nitro-cellulose; failed to consistently give the anti-glow effect, which must be attributed to the fact that potassium sulphate does not distribute evenly through the combustible gases.

   As can be seen from the ballistic results obtained by the third and fourth rounds of shots from the table above, the anti-glow effect is obtained without noticeable change in the ballistic results of the powder.

  Consequently, it is unnecessary to introduce any correction for the variation in speed of the projector, since this correction would fall within the limits of the usual variations experienced in measuring chronograph speeds. In addition, there is no need to add or subtract anything from the amount of powder representing the normal weight of the load.

   It suffices to add to the charge of powder the necessary extra potassium sulphate which, for convenience, should be contained in a silk bag, if necessary of a special color, and simply attached to the end of the load
With regard to the manufacture of the powder, we have given the example below:
The nitro-cellulose is dehydrated with ethyl alcohol denatured to an appropriate degree and brought to state n

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 colloidal in a suitable mixer by adding ether. Dinitrotoluene and dibutyl phthalate are added to the ether or directly to the mixer.

  Thanks to the solvent action of these last two ingredients, the quantity of alcohol and of ether is less than in the usual case, for nitro-celluloses not containing these ingredients. The potassium sulfate is uniformly and finely ground in a ball mill or other type of mill, at a speed sufficient to pass through a wire sieve having 32 meshes per centimeter. The invention is not, however, limited to this degree of finesse. Diphenylamine is usually added as a stabilizer and is usually dissolved in ether. The colloid can be compressed, either in tubular grains, with one or more perforations crossing the grain, or in the form of grains in ribbons or flakes.

   The powder grains are subjected to a careful treatment of solvent recovery, before final drying, which can take place in air or hot water, at a temperature not exceeding 60 C, although a higher temperature may be used without affecting the chemical stability of the powder.

   Although it is preferred to use a normal composition containing:
85 parts of nitrocellulose at 13.15% nitrogen
10 parts of dinitrotoluene
5 parts dibutyl phthalate
1 part of diphenylamine
1/3 to 1/2 part of potassium sulphate it should be understood that the invention is not limited to these proportions and to these ingredients. For example, the nitrocellulose can be a mixture of soluble nitrocellulose.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 in ether-alcohol with cellulose insoluble in ether-alcohol (2 parts of ether to 1 part of ethyl alcohol) and have a nitrogen content greater than or less than 13.15%; or it may be entirely of the soluble type and have a nitrogen content of between 12.0 and 12.80%.

   The amount of dinitrotoluene can be decreased or increased or the dinitrotoluene can be replaced by other nitro compounds.

   The dibutyl phthalate can be in greater or less amount, or be replaced by other cooling agents, solvents for nitrocellulose.

   The amount of potassium sulfate incorporated in the ballistic powder will be in the neighborhood of 1/3 to 1/2% for the 155 m / m G.P.F. barrel. For other guns having different characteristics, it can be notably in excess of this quantity. It should be understood that an attempt should be made to incorporate the greatest possible amount of potassium sulfate into the powder without obtaining the anti-glare effect and that the best amount to use for each gun can be easily determined by experiment.

   The potassium sulphate added to the powder charge is preferably in the form of tablets, which suppresses the dust which would occur if pulverulent potassium sulphate was used. Potassium sulfate can also be contained in a film of nitrocellulose, cellulose ester or the like. The silk of the powder bag can be weighed with potassium sulfate. However, it is preferable to incorporate the potassium sulfate into a nitro-cellulose colloid so that the potassium sulfate

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 potassium, as the colloid burns, is gradually given over to the powder gases, which ensures a more uniform distribution of potassium sulphate through the powder gases.

   The colloid containing potassium sulphate may have a composition similar to the preferred composition of ballistic powder, such as:
85 parts of 13.15% nitro-cellulose Az.

   10 parts of dinitrotoluene
5 parts dibutyl phthalate
1 part of diphenylamine
50 parts of potassium sulfate.

   This colloid can be made in exactly the same way as the ballistic powder itself, except that it is best to air dry. The colloid can be compressed into strips, rolls or tubes, with one or more perforations, and suitably cut into grains, which do not need to be the same shape or thickness as the ballistic powder.

   Of course, the invention is not limited to the above composition of the nitro-cellulose colloid containing potassium sulphate, nor even to a composition based on nitro-cellulose, the potassium sulphate possibly. be incorporated into powders of nitro-glycerin or of another type.

   Although the invention preferably applies to a ballistic powder based on nitro-cellulose, it goes without saying that the invention is not limited to a powder of a particular composition, and that it is possible to incorporate in any powder, whether based on nitrocellulose, nitro-glycerin or other potassium sulphate in an insufficient quantity to suppress the glow, and one can

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 then add to the powder charge the additional potassium sulphate necessary for the suppression of the glow.

   Instead of potassium sulphate, either in the ballistic powder or in the anti-glare supplement, or in both, other alkali metal salts, such as potassium nitrate, potassium oxalate, can be used. , etc ..., but it is preferable to use salts which are not hygroscopic as long as the relative humidity does not exceed about 90% at room temperature, and which do not adversely affect the stability of the powder. It is obvious that in the case of the anti-glare supplement, if the salt is added as is or in the form of tablets, it does not need to be a salt without action on the stability of the nitro-cellulose or powder, because if the salt is contained in a silk bag, it does not come into contact with the ballistic powder.

   The invention is useful for obtaining the anti-glare effect in guns, in particular large caliber guns, using ammunition in which the projectile and the powder charge are loaded separately.

   The invention avoids the disadvantage of the smoke produced by anti-glare powders, in particular in large caliber guns, by giving a powder which, for daytime shooting, has no effect. anti-glow, because it contains an insufficient amount of anti-glow salt, but can be easily made anti-glow at night by adding a very small amount of the same or another anti-glare salt.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

   It can therefore be seen from the foregoing that the invention has, among other advantages, the following:
The anti-glare effect is obtained without any practical change in the ballistic results given to the powder because the anti-glow supplement is so low that it does not have. no effect on the ballistic qualities of the powder.

   The anti-glare effect is obtained at will for shots, either during the day or at night, simply by adding to the charge of powder a packet of anti-glare salt or colloid containing this salt.

   This anti-glare effect is obtained with a minimum amount of smoke.
