COOLING DEVICE IN COMBUSTION ENGINES It is known that the cooling of the spark plugs is of capital importance for the correct operation of high power engines. This cooling is generally carried out by the thread and the seat of the spark plug.

@ In engines without a valve, the spark plug, generally placed near the center of the combustion chamber, at the bottom of a kind of well, is rather difficult to cool properly, because one is not in control. of the speed of the water against the walls.

One of the aims of the present invention is to ensure to a certain extent a control of this speed. It applies more particularly to valves without a valve comprising a sealing jacket and two distribution valves, engines with very high specific power and high speed, where the cooling of the spark plug is of very great importance.

It consists in placing in the well of the candle a circular baffle or cup, which drifts all or part of the cooling water towards the bottom of this well.

   The accompanying drawing represents g

In fig.l, the conventional arrangement of cooling in an engine without valve.

In fig.2, the axial section of a motor provided with the circular chisel according to the invention.

Fig. 3 is a section through the axis of the isolated baffle.

Fig. 4 is the corresponding plan view.

Fig. 5 shows the combination of spark plug cooling with water circulation around the bearings.

In fig.l, we recognize the classic arrangement of the spark plug in an engine without a valve. This, designated by 6, is arranged in the part 7 which is fixed on the one hand on the cylinder by studs and nuts and on the other hand on the cover 10 of the water jacket of the cylinder.

It can be seen that the water surrounds the thread and the seat of the spark plug but that no defined direction of flow is provided for the water in the well of the spark plug. It circulates there by simple convection, that is to say at extremely low speeds.

In fig. 2, we see inside the cylinder head a circular part with a flange 11, held on the cylinder head by the same fixing screws of the latter, and forcing the water current to flow in the direction of arrows. The water descends along the outer wall of the well and rises along its inner wall to exit the jacket at 9. The water circulation is symmetrical all around the candle.

The baffle or cup 11, which may be made of pressed metal, carries on its collar sorts of slots 12 pushed downwards, with a view to its fixing. Its upper periphery comes to rest against the cover 10 of the water jacket. The water passes through the slots to go from the cylinder liner into the spark plug well.

The baffle or cup (fig. 3 and 4) can be in one or more pieces depending on the bore of the cylinder and the diameter of the well. Its lower spout 14 forces the water to circulate effectively around the thread and the seat of the spark plug.

We know that the exchange of calories is proportional to the square root of the speed of the water. It is therefore in the interest of increasing this speed, that is to say, of passing all of the available water around the spark plug. For this, of course, the free sections must be suitable. For this purpose, the cup 11 is brought closer to the outer wall than to the inner wall, so that the free sections have approximately the same value.

The cup may be pierced with a few small holes in its collar, in order to allow the evacuation of dissolved air bubbles which, otherwise, might form a buffer after a certain time. This cup can also work with cylinders placed bottom down, if the seotions and the water flow are such that the speed of the latter is greater than that of the ascent of the air bubbles, so to avoid the formation of air or vapor pockets.

Since good cooling of the spark plug is ensured, in order to obtain maximum results, the pistons must also remain at sufficiently low temperatures. The piston is cooled by conductivity towards the side walls and by oil on the side of the crankcase. It is therefore necessary to ensure good cooling of the oil. The best way to dispense with the need for a separate radiator for the oil is to cool the oil at the points where it heats up, that is, in the bearings.

Fig. 5 shows how one can combine the cooling of the spark plug by using a circular cup or baffle, and the cooling of the bearing 15 by a water inlet around it and return by 16 in the cylinder liner .

This combination ensures perfectly correct operation of an engine without a valve for considerable specific powers, and especially in the case of engines with gaskets and plugs.
