<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to methods and devices comprising modulation of a light flux, in particular to those for talking cinema II.
The invention relates to methods and devices comprising modulation of a light flux; and it concerns more particularly (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively among these processes and devices, those for talking cinema.
It aims, above all, to improve the precision of the modulation of the light flux used.
It consists mainly, as regards the processes of the kind in question, in having recourse, as luminous flux to be modulated, to a flux resulting from the diffusion of at least part of the light coming from any light source. ,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and, as regards devices of the kind in question, to have recourse, as the source of the luminous flux to be modulated, to an area delimited in an appropriate manner and capable of transmitting, at least partially, by diffusing it, the light it has received from any light source.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time, and which will be discussed more explicitly below.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said provisions; and it also relates more particularly, and this as new industrial products, to devices of the kind in question comprising the application of said provisions, to special elements specific to their establishment, as well as to installations, fixed or mobile, in particular those for talking movies, comprising such devices.
And it could, in any case, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawing, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Fig. 1 of this drawing is a diagram of a device for reproducing sounds recorded on film, this device being established in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2, finally, shows this same device in section according to 2-2 FIG. 1.
According to the invention, and more particularly according to that of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which: it seems that preference should be given, proposing to establish a device for the reproduction of recorded sounds, for example in the usual manner, on a film, one does it like, follows, or in a similar way.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
As regards, first of all, the mechanical system for guiding and moving the film a, it is constructed in any suitable manner, for example in one of the ways currently in use. ,
In what concerns on the other hand, the optical system to be made include in the device to be established, one arranges it in such a way that the luminous flux to be modulated by the film results from the diffusion of at least part of the film. light from any light source b.
To this end, the light coming from the source b is projected by any appropriate means, for example by using a capacitor or a mirror converging the light coming from the source b on an organ such that, when struck by the light beam coming from the source a, it has a luminous surface; then, considering said luminous surface as a source of light, the image of this surface is projected, using an appropriate objective! 9 on the zone to be illuminated of the film a, the luminous flux having crossed this zone being then brought to act on a photoelectric cell e.
Use is preferably made as the light source h, or else a standard lamp a. batennet filament, that is to say with a filament in the form of a very tight helix, the capacitor or the mirror used can then be any or else to a usual lamp with filament of any shape, in which case one has, preferably, recourse, either to at least one cylindrical lens to constitute the capacitor a, or else to a cylindrical mirror, this thanks to which one obtains, in each case,) to illuminate the organ having to diffuse the light, a substantially rectangular elongated image.
We constitute :, as already said, the organ before
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
diffusing light in any suitable manner such that under the illumination of the source a it presents a luminous surface, which can be achieved, among other advantageous ways, or by constituting the di-t organ by a plate capable of being illuminated on one of its faces and of returning the light by the same faces, or even better, by constituting this same organ by a translucent plate, for example made of glass frosted or opaline glass, clean, when illuminated on one of its faces, to appear luminous on its opposite face.
When it is desired to have recourse to the latter solution, a plate, for example made of opaline glass, is placed perpendicular to the axis of the beam leaving the capacitor c and at a distance such that, in the image then projected onto the illuminated face of said plate, we can write a rectangle of dimensions corresponding to the wind zone that we want to obtain on the opposite face of this same plate, we establish a slot in the form of an elongated rectangle, slot that we have in such a way that, seen from the objective d, the illuminating zone of the plate appears in the form of a rectangle with edges as sharp as possible, finally, the objective is placed, on the one hand, and the film has , on the other hand,
in such a way that the image obtained from the illuminating zone thus delimited exactly covers the zone to be illuminated on the film, ie, for example, a strip 3 m / m long and 0.001 to 0.004 m / m wide.
The slot is given any suitable dimensions, preferably much greater than those given to the slots hitherto used; this is how, for example, we give the slit g dimensions equal to several times (ten times in an embodiment having given good results) @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the dimensions of the image to be ultimately obtained on the film.
In order to obtain, for this final image, a sharpness and a luminosity as great as possible, one can, obviously, arrange the eusdite slit :, either between the lamp il and the plate f, or else between the plate and the objective e, or in the thickness of this same plate.
Preferably, recourse will be had to the first of these three arrangements only in the case of a very thin translucent plate, or else in the case of a plate presenting superficially, on that of its faces turned towards the lamp b, a very thin translucent layer (for example roughening). Preferably, the slot will be attached to the plate.
On the other hand, use will advantageously be made of the second of the three aforementioned arrangements in all the other cases, in particular in that where the translucent layer of the. plate 2 is disposed on the face of said plate which is turned towards the objective. again, the slot will preferably be attached to the plate.
Finally, the third arrangement can be used in the oas where it will not be necessary to vary the width of the font.
If, on the other hand, one wishes to be able to vary this width, one will have recourse to one of the first two of the three aforesaid arrangements and one will provide, to allow the adjustment of the width of the slot, any suitable device. ,, advantageously at via micrometric.
Of course, it is also possible to have a slot on each face of the plate and to make at least one of these slots of variable width.
The variation in the width of the slit will, of course,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
All things being equal, as consequences - the variation in the width of the light spot projected on the film.
It will also be possible to obtain by other means a variation in the dimensions of said light spot.
For example, for this purpose, while maintaining constant the width of the slit g, it is possible to move said slit as well as the objective d by such quantities that the image obtained on the film is of / desired width. The length of this image can also, depending on the case, either be left constant or be brought to any desired value.
It will therefore be understood that it will be possible, by acting alone or simultaneously, on factors such as those below, dimensions (width and length) of the slit g and respective positions of the various elements (in particular objective d and plate f) by compared to the film, to obtain, on the film, an image as small as can be desired, and to vary at will, depending on the fineness of the recording, the dimensions of said image.
Following what. and after having mounted the various elements which have just been described, on a suitable frame, a device will be obtained, in all cases, the operation of which is as follows.
The lamp b being supposed to be on, projects through the capacitor c an intense beam of light on one of the faces of the opaline plate f, which then presents, on the other face, a luminous zone.
The slit clearly delimiting the part of this visible zone of the objective d, everything takes place as if one had, opposite the objective, a light source emitting light towards all the points from where she is
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
visible ,, therefore over the whole of the entry surface of the objective d.
It can be seen that: thanks to this arrangement, the efficiency of the assembly will be much higher than what it would be in the absence of the plate f, thanks to which it will be possible to have recourse to a much less powerful lamp. that so far.
In fact, in the absence of the plate ± the beam coming out of the slit is flattened and either does not concern the whole of the objective, or is not fully used.
The illumination of the photoelectric cell f will therefore be notably improved by the invention and it will also result in better modulation.
In addition, the image of the slit projected on the film can be as clear as the objective e will allow, which will eliminate to the greatest possible extent the parasitic noise inherent in all current devices.
Finally, the small-amplitude relative displacements that the lamp b can undergo with respect to the slit are no longer of any importance because the image of the filament on the plate f will not cease to cover the tenta g. On the contrary, with current devices, any displacement of the lamp relative to the slot causes very serious disturbances in operation.
As it goes without saying and as it emerges moreover already from what precedes, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the methods of realization of its various parts. having more particularly been envisaged it in opposite shade, all the variants p in particular those where it would be used in apparatuses for teletransmission of images or television, in which case, of course, it would be necessary to replace - cer the slit by a tiny hole.
