 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Internal combustion engine.

   The present invention relates to internal combustion engines comprising valves housed in the cylinder head of the cylinder. The improvement consists in arranging the intake and exhaust valves at different angles, the preferred construction consisting in placing the stem of one, preferably of the intake valve, at an acute angle and the stem of the other valve at a right angle to the axis of the cylinder bore. Accordingly the compression chamber is a cylindrical extension of the cylinder hole with a flat bottom oblique to the axis of the cylinder while a valve, preferably the intake valve, is located in the cylinder.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the bottom and the other valve in the cylindrical surface of the compression chamber.

   The plane of the bottom of the cylinder preferably connects the point of the valve seat, in the wall surface, the most diametrically opposite point of the inner end of the course of the spis remote from the inner end of the stroke of the wall. neck cula se of the cylinder is preferably divided in the plane of the bottom of the cylinder.

   The drawings show three variations of an exemplary embodiment of the invention.

   Fig. 1 is a vertical section of an engine according to the present invention with a lower camshaft common to the intake and exhaust valves.

   Fig. 2 is a modified form of the valve mechanism with the upper common camshaft for the intake and exhaust valves.

   Your fig 43 shows a valve mechanism with a separate upper camshaft for the intake and exhaust valves.

   1 is engine crankshaft, 2 is piston, and 3 is cylinder. The compression chamber is a cylindrical prolongation of the hole in cylinder 5, having the same diameter and cut, along an oblique plane xx forming an acute angle z with the yy axis of cylinder 3. the angle z is preferably more small than 45 o but larger than 30 o and best of 40 o The cylinder head is preferably divided along the xx plane so that the inner surface of the cylinder cover, i.e. the bottom of the cylinder is flat for allow easy finishing of the cover as well as the cylinder hole.

   In multi-cylinder engines, the x-x division plane is parallel to the crankshaft so that all cylinders can be divided along a common plane. One of the valves, preferably the inlet valve 4, is housed in the cover 5 so that the seat 6 of the valve 4 is flush with the bottom of the cylinder.

   It obviously does not have to be exactly flush, since for example even in fig /. l, only the seat point

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 6 closest to the wall of cylinder 3 is exactly level with the bottom of the cylinder while towards the axis of the cylinder dre the valve seat serves slightly at a very acute angle to the bottom of the cylinder. The other valve 7 which is preferably the exhaust valve is housed in the peripheral surface of the cylinder head forming the extension of the cylinder hole. Consequently the bottom of the cylinder extends from the point of the valve 7 furthest from the internal end of the stroke of the cylinder to a point diametrically opposite the latter.

   The spark plug is disposed in the cylinder cover between the two valves, so that it is located substantially at one end of the major axis of the elliptical cylinder bottom. In these two spark plugs, they are arranged between the valves on either side of the line connecting the scupape centers; that is, the major axis of the elliptical cylinder head.

   The cylinder head according to the present invention allows the re-use of valves, especially of an intake valve, the diameter substantially larger, relative to the cylinder bore "than has heretofore been possible. This results in various advantages, for example the volumetric efficiency ee is increased, the average engine torque at low and medium speeds is higher due to the smaller delay in closing the intake valve. the transmission ratio can be increased under the same conditions by about 20-25% compared to known constructions.

   The cylindrical bottom, which is at an acute angle to the exhaust valve, directs the exhaust gases to the exhaust valve so that the exhaust takes place with less frictional losses. The shape of the compression chamber causes good gas turbulence during the suction and compression strokes despite the superior arrangement of the valves. As most of the area of the compression chamber is formed by the piston and valves, the cooling area is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 relatively small. Despite the advantageous shape of the compression chamber for turbulence, the distance from the spark plug to any point in the compression chamber is small.

  It is possible to fill the space of the compression chamber more or less by an extension of the piston, so that there is practically no limit to the reduction of the volume of the compression chamber, the turbulence being increased. at the same time. As the compression chamber is an extension of the cylinder bore, it is polished together with the cylinder. Most of the flat bottom of the cylinder is occupied by the valve while the remaining part of it can be polished without complication. The highly polished surface of the compression chamber is, however, very advantageous from the point of view of heat loss. Large spaces of water, completely surrounding the ignition plugs, are due to the special arrangement of the valves without harmful accumulation of material in the walls.

   The valve mechanism is relatively simple. according to fig. 1, the exhaust valve 7 is controlled from the lower camshaft 11 by means of the plunger 22 and an elbow lever 23 pivoting on the shaft 12 while the intake valve 4 is actuated. from the same camshaft via the longer plunger 13 and the lever 15 pivoting on the shaft 14 mounted on the cylinder cover 5.

   The arrangement according to FIG. 2 corresponds substantially to that shown in FIG. iwith this difference, however, that the seat of the inlet valve is exactly level with the cylinder bottom at the x-x division plane. A common camshaft 16,, not tee on the cylinder, actuates the exhaust valve 7 directly by means of the lever 17 and the intake valve 4 by means of a plunger 20 by means of the lever 19. pivoting at 18 on the cylinder cover.

   According to fig. 3, separate camshafts 16 and 21 are provided for the exhaust valve 7; and the intake valve 4 respectively.
