<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
foyer.

The present invention has for object an anti-dazzling headlight system.; Ant producing an intensive light projection without causing the slightest inconvenience to the drivers of passing vehicles.
The accompanying drawing shows several examples of practical embodiments of the invention,

two variants of the lighthouse.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of an electric lamp having the anti-glare screen inside the bulb '.
As shown in Fig. I, by placing an opaque cover b behind an oonvexgen te a, closing off half of this lens, and located at a distance at least equal to the gfoher of the lens, while being placed in front of a light source c, we obtain , in front of this lens, the projecti @ ti on of the cover b in the shadow plane. By making the axis AB of the lens a coincide with the top of the cover b, the inverted projection of the latter merges with the axis AB and is horizontal.
The maximum sharpness in the projection of the mask b, even at great distances, is obtained by placing the mask ex exactly in the center of the focal point of the lens. In this position the mask is then in focus on infinity.
According to Fig. 2, the light power of the projection is increased by a reflector d returning the light rays from the lamp c so as to cause them to cross at a point on the axis AB situated between the lens a and its focus. The light rays strike the lens below its axis, but their luminous projection is not reversed, because, crossing the axis AB at a distance from the lens less than that of its focus, they are divergent and Consequently, the closer the point of intersection with the axis AB of the rays reflected by the reflector d is to the point f, focal point of the lens, the less divergent these rays are. The illuminated area in front of the lens is smaller, but the length of the range is increased.
Likewise, the closer the point of intersection is to the lens, ', the more divergent the rays projected by the latter are, and the larger the illuminated surface and the shorter the range.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The shape of the reflector d can be spherical or elliptical at will. It is not essential that all the rays reflected by the reflector d meet at the same point on the axis AB; they can, without inconvenience, be staggered on this axis between the focus and the lens, some illuminating in the distance, and the others, more divergent, have a shorter projection. a parabolic reflector may be suitable, because by striking the lens parallel to the axis AB, the rays :, at the exit of the latter, are convergent and cross at the focal point of the lens, in front of the latter. After this point of crossing, they become too divergent to illuminate with sufficient intensity.
The reflector of this type of headlight can also be spherical or elliptical, extended by an ovoid curve or by a cylinder.
The sketch of FIG. 3 makes it possible to recover the light from the lamp c, radiating below the axis AB and absorbed by the cover b. To this effect and, a spherical reflector h having its center at the light focal point of the lamp c, is placed under the latter. The result is that the rays reflected by the reflector h pass again through the luminous point of the lamp o and become rays incident with respect to the reflector

d and lentine a.
In the schematic embodiment of FIG. 4, the light source c is placed at the focus f. of the lens, and theoran is placed very close to this focus. This arrangement makes it possible to eliminate the reflector h of the embodiment of FIG. 3.
From the comparison of the previous drawings, it emerges that the realization of Fig. 1 allows to use about a tenth of the light; Fig. 2 uses four tenths of it, FIG. 3 eight tenths, and FIG. 4 almost all,
In the embodiment of FIG. 5, the rectilinear thread is arranged horizontally on 1% axis of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tils 2, while the axis of the reflector 3 passes through the middle of the filament. The reflector 3 is formed by a series of elliptical curves connected together and combined in such a way that the bottom of the reflector projects the rays of the lamp onto the axis of the reflector, exactly above the focal point F of the lenses 2.
The other curves, as they approach the edge of the reflector, project the light rays of the lamp further and further ahead of this focal point.
On the other hand, the upper part of the recuperative reflector 4 is placed at the height of the axis of the lenses. Having to stop only a very small part of the rays reflected from the bottom only of the reflector 3 and over a narrow sandstone, since these rays cross just above the edge of the reflector 4, the latter is practically enough eb right may suffice.
The rays reflected by the bottom of the reflector 3, crossing over the focal point of the lenses 2 on the axis @ of the reflector, are theoretically not stopped by the reflector 4. It is therefore advantageous to keep the entire lens. bottom of this recuperating reflector 4. This arrangement makes it possible to increase the projection power of the headlight since the bottom of the reflector 3 determines the illumination in the distance, while the part of the recuperator reflector 4 removed only illuminated near the distance. 'apparel.
On the other hand, the front part 5 of the reflector 3 is only used in half,
Thus constructed, the apparatus should theoretically not dazzle at all, but, in practice, the slightest adjustment defect results in brilliant reflections in the bottom of the lenses. These reflections are osoasized by light rays coming from the recuperating reflector 3 and meeting the first lens 2 at an angle too acute for the latter to be able to straighten them sufficiently to make them meet the other lens 2.
By being reflected on the annular inner wall of the spacer separating the two
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
lenses 2, the rays directed from bottom to top are projected above the axis, To avoid the glare caused by these r rays and in order to stop them, a screen 6 is arranged at any point between the focus F of the lenses and the first of these.The only consequence of) the position of the screen is that the further it is from the focus, the wider it must be and the more it must be lowered relative to the axis. lentils.
This screen 6 is not absolutely essential, but it completely corrects any adjustment error, even quite large. The top of this screen is slightly curved along a radius which is all the greater the further the screen is from the focus F lenses.
In the headlight variant illustrated in FIG. 6, account is taken of the location of the light source relative to the focal point of the projector lens. The further this light source is placed behind the focal point of the projector lens, the more the luminous power of the projector decreases.
On the contrary, the closer the light source is to the focal point of the lens, the more power is increased. It is maximum when the light source is placed at the focal point of the lens.
It follows that in order to considerably increase the power of the apparatus in the case of an electric incandescent lamp as the light source, it is necessary to place the opaque screen 7 inside the bulb. $, as close as possible to the incandescent filament 10.
The edge of the screen 7 should be rectilinear and as large as the manufacture of the lamp allows.
In principle, the upper edge of this screen is fixed to the focal point of the lens to obtain a very clear cut of the shadow plane. In practice, its position can be brought closer, even by several millimeters from the lens, to so that it is the luminous filament of the lamp which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
hearth. This arrangement allows a strong increase in the power of the apparatus, and despite this slight shift in the position of the screen, the latter is still projected with sufficient sharpness to completely eliminate the glare.
This new arrangement results in the removal of the recuperator reflector. As for the other reflectors 11 and 12, they are formed by spherical curves so that their reflected rays come together towards the focal point of the objective. Their center of curvature therefore corresponds to this focus.
The upper reflector 11 is continued by a parabolic curve 13, the axis of which is inclined on the axis of the projector. This arrangement gives close illumination in width.
