<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

is mainly characterized in that the fuel to be treated is first subjected to preheating to a suitable temperature, then partially oxidized in the desired proportion, finally subjected to carbonization at low temperature.
The invention, which is the subject of the aforementioned patent, further extends in particular to all the apparatus and means for implementing the method and more particularly to an apparatus consisting of the combination of a preheating furnace, an oxidizing device. and a carbonization furnace, arranged to be successively traversed by the fuel to be treated, with the new application to said rotary furnace apparatus,
The present invention relates to apparatus for carrying out this method and is characterized mainly by the following points which apply separately or in any combination:
a) the oxidizer tube is provided inside the upper preheating furnace of which it is integral, which transmits its rotational movement to it, the direction of circulation of the oxidizing air being the opposite of that of the material treated with a view to obtain a progressive oxidation and as extensive as that is necessary. b) a device for recovering the dust contained in the air which has played its oxidizing role is produced at the outlet of the latter from the upper oven, the dust received in a cyclone provided for this purpose being recalled ,. to the lower oven feed screw.
@ c) balanced valves are provided, on the one hand, in the feed chute for the treated material to the feed screw of the lower oven, on the other hand in the lower part of the cyclone receiving the dust contained in the air having played its oxidizing role.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This valve device has the effect, while allowing the coal to pass, to prevent as far as possible the gas and tar vapors accidentally under pressure in the lower oven from flowing back into the lower oven on the one hand. one per% in the upper preheating oven and on the other hand in the above-mentioned cyclone. d) means are provided for removing from the circuit, at its exit from the preheating furnace, the coal which, during start-up for example and due to an insufficient temperature, does not exhibit the oxidation state sought to pass without inconvenience in the carbonization furnace.
e) devices are provided for the adaptation of the water which comes from the condensation of the vapors contained in the air having served for the oxidation of the fuel, this condensation taking place in particular in the junction column between the cyclone where deposit the dust and the fan which causes the call for air. f) evacuation of the treated material, after leaving the lower oven. is carried out by a distributor set automatically in motion for a determined load, with a view to constituting a sealing device so as to prevent the access of the outside air to the lower oven, which is lightly placed? depression for the extraction of tarry gases and vapors.
g) the pipe for evacuating the gases leaving the lower oven opens into a cyclone separating dust, which accumulates on a balanced shutter constituting the bottom of this cyolone. This shutter is actuated automatically for a determined load. and allows the evacuation of dust preferably towards the discharge distributor of the treated material while ensuring the seal between the cyclone and the outside air.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
h) cleaning devices, operated automatically or manually, are provided, on the one hand, in the dust separator cyclone discharged with the gases and vapors leaving the lower oven as well as in the inlet pipe to this cyclone and, on the other hand, in the riser provided above said cyclone, where the gas and the dust-free vapors enter, and the pipe leading them to the barrel. i) the pipe for supplying the dusty gases and vapors to the barrel comprises a water injector which causes intense condensation in said pipe. j) the carrier rollers are mounted on a carriage so as to allow, by their approach or their splitting, the reduction or increase of the slope of the furnaces.
k) the various kinematic components of the apparatus and in particular the rotational movement of the furnaces, the feed distributor of the upper preheating furnace, the feed mechanism of the lower carbonization furnace and the automatic discharge distributor of the semi-cocke are operated by the same motor source.
The changes and improvements that are the subject of the present invention can give rise to numerous embodiments all included within the scope of the latter.
One of these embodiments is illustrated, by way of example only, by the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows a section; overall longitudinal
Figure 2 shows a cross section along II-II of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a profile view, upstream side,
Figure 4 is a profile view on the downstream side,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The apparatus shown comprises in particular two preferably cylindrical tubes 1 and 2, superimposed in the same heating chamber 3.
The upper tube 1, according to an embodiment indicated in the main patent, envelops the oxidizer tube 21 with a polygonal section arranged ooaxially to the preceding one which it is integral with, the tube 21 and the furnace 1 thus being driven in the same movement. ment of rotation. This arrangement is adopted on the one hand to improve the heat balance of the oxidizing member 21, avoiding heat loss, and on the other hand to simplify the overall mechanism.
The tubes 1 and 2 are respectively intended for the preheating of the fuel and for the carbonization at low temperature, the latter operation being preceded by the partial oxidation carried out in the tube 21.
The operation of the device is briefly recalled below:
The coal dust stored in the hopper 29 is sent at a constant but adjustable flow rate, via a feed distributor 16, into the annular space of the upper furnace 1 in which, thanks to the planned slope and the rotational movement of the latter, it progresses by heating up to a temperature of about 350 (ie, for greater precision, up to a temperature slightly below the melting temperature of the coal). when it arrives at the downstream end of this upper oven.
Radial vanes 22, integral with the furnace and therefore participating in its rotation, allow the passage of the dust from the annular space into the axial oxidizer tube 21. This tube of polygonal section also integral with the upper furnace, as indicated, is provided with internal -
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
inside of fins 37 oriented such that, thanks to the rotational movement, the coal dust progresses from downstream to upstream in the direction of arrow 30. Arrived at the upstream end, it falls into the chute 32 through the three sleeves 31 (Figure 2).
Throughout this journey, the coal dust is subjected to the oxidative inaction of an air current created by the call of a fan 19c and following the route below; entering the furnace at the upstream part through the orifices 33, the air enters the oxidizer tube through the sleeves 31, follows the direction of arrow 34, passes at the downstream end into the annular space in which it follows the direction of the arrow 30, through the tube 35 a cyclone 36 gains where the entrained dust separates and arrives at the fan 19c which releases it into the atmosphere, Thanks to the vigorous stirring of the coal, as a result of the rotation of the furnace and the presence of the vanes 37 of the oxidizer tube, the contact of the air and the hot dust is perfectly assured and the desired oxidation effect is obtained.
The result of this is to reduce the aggregating power of the coal in the desired proportion so that its passage through the lower furnace, where carbonization must take place, does not give rise to the serious drawbacks of the caking of the molten coal. . This caking in fact constitutes one of the most serious bowls in the low-temperature carbonization of bituminous coals in continuous furnaces of this type.
This oxidation is moreover adjustable by the quantity of air brought into play in the register 38 which precedes the fan 19c.
The oxidized dust. having thus lost the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
property of melting and setting, falls into the chute 32 closed at its base by a balanced valve 39; the dust from the cyclone 36 likewise accumulates on a similar valve 40. These valves open under the load and provide access to the dust in the worm 20; they prevent, where appropriate, the gas and tar vapors, accidentally being pressurized in the lower oven, from flowing back into the upper oven, on the one hand, and into the cyclone 36 on the other.
The worm 20 enters the lower oven 2 through the screen 41, a stuffing box 42 ensuring the seal.
The oxidized dust, brought by the screw 20 into the lower furnace 2, progresses, due to the rotational movement and the expected slope, from upstream to downstream and is in this furnace in contact with balls of fire. steel 9 which are retained there despite the slope by the grid 10.
The purpose of these steel balls is, as indicated in the main patent:) to stir the coal dust to ensure its rapid and regular heating and distillation. b) bringing calories to the very mass of the dust thanks to their conductivity and their calorific capacity. a) to maintain, by their emechanical action, the internal wall of the furnace in a perfect state of cleanliness, a condition whose non-observance is of prime importance from the point of view of heat transmission. of d) to oppose, where appropriate, an accidental tendency to agglutination.
The powdered semi-coke passes through the grid 10 which retains, as we have already said, the steel balls in the furnace.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The downstream end of the lower fo, ur is closed by a box 14 comprising a gasket 43.
The semi-coke falls into the chute 44 and is automatically discharged by the distributor 45 in one of the conveyors 46 or 47, This distributor 45 only works if the level of the semi-cake in the chute 44 reaches a certain determined level once and for all, so as to constitute a sort of sealing guard preventing any re-entry of air into the oven placed under a slight depression, as will be indicated later, for the extraction of gas and tarry vapors .
In addition, the flow of the distributor '45 is proportional to the arrival of the semiooke in the chute 44,
The gas and tarry vapors laden with semi-coke dust, under the action of the vacuum maintained in the collector 48, exit the box 14 through the tube 49 to reach a cyclone 50 where the dust is removed and returned. to distributor 45,
The stale gas dusted tar vapors then rise in the vertical column of the cyclone, and through the tube 51 the barrel 52. A water injector 53 initiates intense condensation in this tube 51. The gas, partly tar. , leaves the barrel 52 to go to the collector 48 which will lead it to the intensive condensers.
The tubing 49, the cyclone 50 and its riser, as well as the tubing 51, which are fitted with in-service cleaning devices consisting of rings 54, 55, 56 and 57.
The operation of the apparatus being thus recalled, it is appropriate to describe the various members which make it possible to carry out the various operations mentioned above.
The two superimposed ovens 1 and '2 are fitted with
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
each end of the rolling hoops 4, which rest on carrier rollers 5 and 6. FIG. 1, resting on metal frames, not shown. The rolling frets. on the upstream side, are maintained laterally by rollers with vertical axes 5, from which it follows that the expansion takes place downstream, the upstream remaining fixed. The carrier rollers 6, on the downstream side, are mounted on a carriage 6a, FIG. 4, so as to allow, by bringing them closer or further apart, the reduction or increase in the slope of the ovens.
The rotational movement of the ovens is controlled by the motor 58 (FIG. 1). speed reducer on the slow shaft of which is fixed a pinion 59 which engages a toothed ring 8, integral with the lower furnace, meshing with a similar toothed ring 7, integral with the upper furnace4 via the pinion 7a, both ovens being thus driven by a rotational movement in the same direction.
This same motor 58 controls a transmission shaft 60, FIG. 3, by toothed pinions and Galle chain or any other suitable means. This intermediate shaft actuates by any connection the worm 20 feeding the lower oven, a clutch being provided, the control lever of which is shown in 61 in FIG. 1.
The intermediate shaft 60, FIG. 3, also actuates the feed distributor 16 of the upper oven by means of an eccentric wedged on said shaft and a connecting rod 62 (fig.l) connected to the control lever. operation 63 of the pawl 64 (fig.3) of a rock wheel which attacks the distributor shaft by multiplier gear. The lever 63 constitutes a slide in which moves a slide to which the connecting rod 62 is articulated.
By operating the crank 65, we make take
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
on the slide all the positions which correspond to those of the connecting rod 62 included, between the extreme positions 62a and 62b, the position 62a corresponding to the minimum flow rate of the distributor 16 and that 62b corresponding to the maximum flow rate; the rotation of the ovens and their supply are therefore provided by a single motor 58.
This same motor also operates the automatic semi-coke discharge distributor. To this end, a crank button fixed to one of the lower oven support rollers, downstream side, (FIG. 4) allows, by means of the connecting rod 66, to impart to the licier 67 an oscillating movement which. through the connecting rods and levers 68 and 69 is transformed into a reciprocating movement following the vertical of the counterweight 70.
When there is no semi-coke in the discharge chute 44, this counterweight moves freely; the bar 68 is still under tension and the pawl 71 is therefore permanently raised; it therefore does not attack its rock wheel and no movement is transmitted to the distributor by the bevel gears 72 and 73.
On the contrary, when the semi-coke reaches a certain height in the chute 44, the counterweight 70 is stopped in its downward stroke, the bar 68 is not then under tension, the pawl 71 engages with the ratchet wheel and the distributor is actuated.
It should be noted, as indicated above, that the flow rate of the distributor 45 increases as the level of the semi-coke rises in the chute 44, since the attack of the ratchet wheel and consequently the Distributor movement begins as soon as the counterweight. 7D arises on the semi-coke accumulates.
In the event that lion considers, for example over.

from the start of the furnace and due to an insufficient temperature, that the charcoal coming from the upper furnace is not in the desired oxidation state to pass without inconvenience into the lower carbonizing furnace, a device makes it possible to '' eliminate this charcoal from the circuit when it leaves the upper oven.
It suffices for this to disengage the screw 20 and to open the register 74, FIG. 2, so that this coal is directed through the chute 75 towards a conveyor 6, FIG. 1, provided for this purpose.
The air which served to oxidize the coal in the upper furnace is not only charged with dust, but also with water vapor originating, even if the coal is previously dried, from the reactions accompanying the oxidation.
These stops tend to condense in the column connecting the cyclone 36 to the fan 19c (FIG. 1), this is why it is necessary to provide two devices 77 for collecting the condensed water and its elimination in a gutter by a nocher 78.
The assembly of the two furnaces is enclosed in a refractory enclosure, provided with gas heating devices making it possible to achieve the desired temperature conditions.
The embodiment illustrated and described above is obviously only a simple example capable of constructive modifications which, as far as they do not change, anything in the principle of operation or in the aim pursued, are included within the scope of the present invention.
