 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Welding process using a direct current electric arc supplied from a polyphase alternating current network. @ For welding by means of an electric arc, the use of a direct current arc is, as we know, preferable to that of an alternating current arc, because the direct current arc is much less sensitive than the alternating current arc to the inevitable variations of the distance between the welding electrode and the workpiece. Where a direct current source is not available, current transformers are therefore often used; but these are, since they include a three-phase motor and a DC dynamo, expensive and heavy relative to their power.

   Their heavy weight, in particular, acts in a very unfavorable way, because the welding devices can, in most cases, be fully used only if they are easily movable.

   According to the invention, it is therefore proposed to use for the production of a direct current electric arc supplied from a three-phase current network, instead of a current transformer, a current transformer. frequency by making act

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 the latter in such a way that the frequency of the alternating current supplied to the primary is transformed into zero frequency. This can be: done in a very simple way. Known frequency transformers consist of a transformer (iron core with primary and secondary windings) mounted so as to be able to rotate, and the primary winding of which is connected to a system of slip rings and the secondary winding to a collector.

   If, for example, three-phase current is fed to the primary winding, the result in the iron core is a magnetic field rotating at the period of the three-phase current. When the transformer is rotated in the opposite direction to that of the rotation of the magnetic field and at the same frequency, for example by a synchronous motor, the magnetic field is stationary with respect to the brushes of the collector and these therefore collect a purely direct current. The following particular advantages are then obtained for welding. By changing the angular position of the brush-holder balance, the direct current voltage can be varied in small degrees of 1/2 volt and without loss of energy, within the limits necessary for welding.

   In addition, without a special switching device, the change of poles of the DC arc, which is often necessary in welding work, can be achieved as follows: By actuating the starter of the synchro-motor no control, we drop it a little out of phase, then the magnetic field begins to move slowly, so that the neutral axis moves relative to the brushes of the collector. After a short lapse of time, the estimated duration of which may well be determined in practice, with some practice, the motor is brought back to the synchronous rotational speed, and the change of poles is carried out on the direct current side.

   Another advantage lies in the fact that the welding transformer can, under load, work with a large advance of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 phase, given that it is possible, by shortening the electric arc, to produce an overexcitation on the switch side; this results in the fact that it is possible, by means of the slip rings, to borrow from the three-phase current network, to a considerable extent (cos. advancing up to 0.5), a three-phase capacitive current.

   We already know the theoretical possibility of producing, by means of a frequency transformer with synchronous operation, direct current from a three-phase current. The invention consists in the application of this theoretical method to the special field of electric arc welding. As a result, significant technical progress is achieved; because, as we know, for the purposes of welding, according to the invention, only a very simple device, inexpensive and, what is particularly important, of minimal weight, is required. which can be transported from one working place to another without difficulties like an ordinary welding transformer. In addition, the measurements, important for welding, of adjusting the voltage by small degrees and changing the poles can be carried out without any additional devices.
