<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements to the control bodies of airplanes".
The present invention relates to improvements to the components of airplanes. Its object is to maintain and even increase lateral control when, during flight, one approaches the angle of loss of speed of the machine. .
In accordance with the invention, the apparatus which serves to maintain or increase the lateral control of the airplane comprises organs serving to disturb the air flow on one or the other of the two wings, The said, 3 organs can only be maneuvered when the wing is approaching the angle of loss of speed or is losing speed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a schematic view of a wing in which m has provided an interceptor which serves to disturb the air flow over the wing ;. this interceptor is controlled by a} shutter located in front.
The term flap (in English "slat") designates a "wing" located forward or "auxiliary wing" which is located on the front of a main wing and which advances to open a slit when the angle of incidence increases by so as to approach the angle of loss of speed. In the position shown, the flap and the wing are close to each other; they form a wing of uninterrupted contour; it is not possible to maneuver. ve the interceptor and the aileron is in its middle position.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the same wing with the flap and interceptor in the same positions as in Figure 1, but the aileron is moved to its maximum upper position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to the same wing, the flap being returned to its forward position as a result of the change in air pressure on its surface while the interceptor control mechanism is in a position in which the upward movement of the aileron would operate the interceptor; however, the aileron is in the middle position of Figure 1 and the interceptor is in the withdrawn position.
Figure 4 is a similar view of the same aisle as (Julio of Figure 3, but the aileron is raised and the interceptor is in the position in which it is lifted by the wing-round.
Figures 5, 6 and 7 are views similar to those of figures 1, 3 and 4 respectively, of the conductive part of an aisle; provided with an interceptor, while the fly and the mech

FIGS. I2, I3 and 14 are views similar to those of FIGS. 1, 3 and 4 respectively of a wing, the interceptor control mechanism of which is brought into the operating position by an incidence device.
In Figures 1 to 4 :, the main wing 1 carries a flap 2 located on the front and a spoiler 3 at the rear. The flap is carried by joints 4 and 5 which pivot at 6 and 7 on the flap and at 8 and 9 on a gear 10 of the main wing. The interceptor 11 is located in the main wing and is covered by the flap when the latter is in the closed position as shown in Figures 1 and 2. This interceptor 11 is pivotally mounted at 12 on the main wing.

when approaching the angle of loss of speed, that is to say the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, in which the lever 13 is at a certain distance from the interceptor and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the rear part of the cable 15 sufficiently loose to prevent the lever 13 from being actuated by the aileron in the position of FIG. 3 in which the lever 13 is in a position where its roller 14 is against the interceptor and the cable 15 is stretched even when the aileron is in the middle position shown in Figure 3 ..
In this position of figure 3, the upward movement of the aileron forces the lever 13 to rotate the interceptor upwards, against the antagonistic action of the spring 16 ", through the existing slot or opening 17. between flap 2 and main aileron 1, as shown in figure 4. A slight movement of aileron 3 is sufficient to raise the interceptor and, to increase control, aileron 3 is attached to the rear end of the cable by sliding connections comprising a rod 18 and a slider 19, so that the continuation of the upward movement of the aileron beyond that necessary to lift the fin. interceptor can be printed on it against the antagonistic action of spring 20.
In the arrangement shown in Figures 5 to 7, the shutter 2, instead of being mounted on the joints, as is the case in the first example shown lo, is attached to a track 21, which has preferably a section in the form of a channel to receive two fixed rollers 22 and 23 carried by the gear 24 fixed to the main wing. In this construction, the flap is free to travel forward following a path in an arc of a circle, following the line of the track 21, when the air pressure on the said flap away from the main wing.
In this case the interceptor 11 is the mens that $ in the promier $ oxomple and the levler $ 13 $ control of the interceptor is pivotally attached 25 on an arm 26 pivotally mounted at 27 on track 21. The arm 26 carries at its end a roller 28 which, when the track advances, comes into contact with a curved surface .29 which intervenes to lift the control lever of the interceptor and bring its roller 14 into contact
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
with this last.
In Fig. 5 the flap is against the wing and the interceptor control lever is moved away from it, while the cable 15 which attaches the control lever in question to the aileron is loose. When shutter 2 moves forward under air pressure, the interceptor uncovers and the interceptor control lever moves forward and up to a position in which it can be maneuvered to lift the interceptor. and in which the cable 15 is stretched, a position which is shown in FIG. 6. If the aileron is then raised, the control lever of the interceptor pushes the interceptor 11 upwards into the position shown. by figure 7.
In a modification of this arrangement shown in Figures 1 to 4, the control lever of the interceptor must not be mounted directly on the joint 5; the mechanism can be arranged, as shown in Figures 8 and 9, in which the control lever of the interceptor has its pivot 14 'mounted on an extension 30 of a lever 31 pivoting at the same point 8 as that of the hinge 4 and pierced with a slot 32 in which is mounted a pin 33 fixed to the rear hinge 5.
As a result, the forward movement of the shutter 2, via the pin and slot connection 32,33, pushes the lever 31 with the interceptor control lever 13 on it, in the position. required shown in Figure 9, De Morne, the lever 31 instead of being used in conjunction with the arrangement shown in Figures 1 to 4 and being maneuvered by the joints which carry the shutter, could be used in conjunction with the arrangement shown in Figures 5 to 7 and be controlled by channel 21.
In a variant shown in Figures 10 and 11, the interceptor control lever 13 is fixed on the wing,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
near the interceptor 11 and is in an operational position; the forward movement of shutter 2 is used to catch up with the swing of the cable 15 assembling the interceptor control lever with the aileron. The balant of the cable 15 is caught when the flap 2 moves forward under the pressure of the air in the position shown in figure 11, by an arm 35 pivotally mounted at 36 on the main wing and provided with a pin and slot connection indicated by the reference 37, with the articulation 5 and carrying at its end a pulley 38 over which the cable 15 passes.
When the value of the cable is caught up, the aileron can operate the control lever of the interconnector.
In all the constructions described, when the shutter moves forward to open the slot, it catches the balant of the cable assembling the cammando lever of the interceptor with the aileron. Likewise, however, a similar lost movement can be taken up in a connecting rod by the movement of the flap forward.
When the interceptor is moved as a result of the upward movement of the aileron, it is desirable that the interceptor complete its movement in the initial 5 to 500 aileron rise, and even it is not desirable that the interceptor the aileron is limited in its upward movement by its connection with the flap. The spring-loaded connection interposed in the aileron and interceptor assembly cable, in the constructions shown, allows the aileron to move through a greater angle of adjustment without the interceptor mechanism being able to move. 1 prevent it.
The interceptor is preferably arranged so as to intercept the flow of air through the slot when the interceptor is lifted as a result of the upward movement of the aileron; this gives the pilot effective control during flight to allow him to destroy the lift action of each wing's lunge, simply by lifting the aileron.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Although the interceptor device has been considered and described mainly in conjunction with an automatic slit, it can be usefully employed with wings which have no slit provided that the 'a selector mechanism is employed to prevent maneuvering of the interceptor except when the angle of attack of the wing is very close to the angle of loss of speed or when the wing is losing. speed is in /. -the angle of loss of speed is the one which, when
EMI7.1
11 aupmsnt e, ilxx4l = decreases the upward thrust instead of increasing it. This angle is a well-defined angle for all wings but it varies with each wing section.
The interceptor device can therefore be arranged so that it can be operated under the action of the upward movement of the aileron when the angle of incidence of the wing has reached, for example, a distance. decrease angle of 5 and movement of the interceptor may occur with, for example, the first movement of 5 or 10 of the upward movement of the aileron.
One such arrangement applicable to wings which are not provided with slits is. schematically represented by Figures 12 to 14 in which the control lever of the interceptor 13 is moved forward by the incident device, which device pushes the control lever of the interceptor forward into its position operative when the wing is approaching the angle of loss of speed, as shown in figure 13.
The forward movement of the control lever 13 catches the swing of the cable so that when the fin is then raised, the interceptor is moved upward as shown in figure 14, Four disturbing the current of air on the upper surface of the wing.

The lever 45 is pivotally mounted at 47 on the main wing structure and is provided with a pin 48 which engages an opening 49 of the pivot lever 44.
