<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements made to the structures intended to constitute the wing ayatèmea, of the type of those with working coating, for aircraft".
The invention relates to the structures intended to constitute the wing systems, of the type of those known as with working coating - that is to say, of which the coating, and the elements which support it, intervene in the resistance of said systems - , for aircraft, in particular for airplanes or seaplanes.
The purpose of the ball is, above all, to make these structures such that the distribution of the eilorta can be carried out in a more rational way than hitherto.
It consists, mainly, in arranging in such a way, the structures of the kind in question, that the efforts which they have to support because of the torcea which are applied to them at rest or in flight, can be concentrated, towards the attachment points of said structures, on the hull, the fuselage, or part of the airfoil, of the aircraft comprising them, with the aid of distribution elements terminating at these attachment points.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
click and shape such that said elements can be subjected, as much as possible, under the effect of the aforesaid forces, only to tension or compression forces.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions which are preferably used at the same time, and which will be discussed more explicitly below.
It relates more particularly to certain modes of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said methods. provisions; and it relates more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, to the structures of the type in question comprising the application of these same provisions, the special elements specific to their establishment, as well as the aircraft, in particular the planes or seaplanes, comprising similar structures.
And it can, in any case, be well understood with the aid of the additional description, which follows, as well as the accompanying drawings, which complement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of illustration. indication.
Fig. 1, of these drawings, shows, in perspective, with portions broken away, part of a wing structure for an airplane (or seaplane) of the type with a working coating., Seen from the side of its end intended to be fixed to the fuselage or the hull of said aircraft, said structure being established in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 shows, in perspective with cut-away portions, seen from the same side, a part of a structure of the same type (the leading edge and the trailing edge being supposed to be removed), established in accordance with another embodiment of invention.
According to the invention, and more especially according to those of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it appears that preference should be given, proposing, for example, to establish
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a structure intended to constitute the wing system of a monoplane (or even biplane) aircraft, this system being of the working coating type, and comprising two wing halves that the lion can come to fix, either on the fuselage, or, as it will be assumed in what follows, on a portion of the central airfoil, itself fixed to the fuselage of the airplane, this is done as follows, or in a similar manner.
As for the central portion of the canopy, we establish it in some way, and, as regards the wing halves, we establish each of them, as a whole, in an ia- Usually appropriate lesson, that is to say that it is constituted, at least in its median longitudinal portion, by a rigid box on which the corresponding portion of the coating is attached in such a way that this coating can withstand a significant part of the forces applied to the airfoil, said box being produced, for example, using, on the one hand, beams (or side members), braced by pairs b1, b2, b3, etc. ,., said beams being either two in number (fig.
1), for an iaible or medium-power airplane, either in a greater number, for example three (fig. 2), for a more powerful airplane, and, on the other hand, of ± stiffeners on which the coating d is fixed, said stiffeners being themselves fixed to the aforesaid couples, which they pass through, for example, in appropriate notches, the leading edge A and the trailing edge B (fig. 1), being themselves, produced in any suitable manner, and fixed to the end beams of the aforesaid box.
Having these two wing halves, they are fixed to the central portion of the airfoil, as known, by a certain number of attachment points preferably arranged in the planes of the end beams a of the box ( even in the plans of the intermediate beams, when these exist), and nota-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
bre, for example, of four, arranged, respectively, two of them ¯ close to the upper surface, and the other two close to the lower surface, fixing being effected in any suitable manner, by example using bolts or pins specific to cross, on the one hand, attachments e integral with the wing halves and, on the other hand, corresponding attachments integral with the central portion of the airfoil.
It will be understood that, when the wing halves are in place, the forces supported by the various elements must relate to said fasteners, and that it is important to properly distribute said efiorts so as to avoid, in the extreme portion of each wing half, portion adjoining the said attachments, exaggerated efforts requiring large sections of metal which result in unnecessary excess weight.
Until now, we have not succeeded in obtaining a suitable re - partition, we were content, in effect, to terminate the stiffeners on the extreme couple b1. As a result, said torque was subjected to very significant torsional forces, as a result of considerable forces, tension or compression, transmitted by said stiffeners, under the effect of the forces applied to the wing, in particular in flight, in accordance with the invention, recourse is had to, in order to concentrate, towards the attachments e, the forces to which the elements of the structure are subjected, to means such that said forces can be applied to the successful distribution elements. to said fasteners, and of a form such that they cannot be subjected, themselves, as much as possible,
only to tension or compression forces.
For this purpose, it is preferably carried out in such a manner as the aforesaid means, that the stiffeners, which must transmit forces roughly comparable to parallel forces, can come to end on two distribution elements, respectively arranged near the intrados and the extrados., and each having the appearance of a broken or curved line, the ends of which are passed, slightly, through the @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
corresponding attachment points, and the route of which is made such that it merges, roughly, with a funicular line of the forces to be transmitted, for a certain predetermined value, of these forces, said route approaching, for example , either (fig. 1), a parabola, or (fig.
2), in the case of a box with three beams, an ogive, on the top of which the end of the central beam ends.
One achieves, for example, the two aforementioned elements, using profiles of appropriate section, and, preferably, they are joined to each other using means suitable for increasing their rigidity, which means it is carried out, for example, either (fig. 1), by fixing said elements, on their path, on at least one of the transverse couples, or by connecting them by braces or other bracing systems, either (fig. 2), and in particular for large wings, by joining said sections by a core g, solid or provided with recesses, said core being able, in particular at the location of the joints, to be reinforced by vertical elements h.
Preferably, the aforesaid distributing elements are given a variable section which increases towards the fasteners e, since the forces which they have to withstand increase as one approaches said fasteners, as well as the efforts in an arch bridge, when one is standing. brings the abutments closer.
As regards the connection to be provided between the distribution elements and the stiffeners, it is arranged in such a way, advantageously, that the forces to be transmitted are distributed as uniformly as possible along said elements, which is why, by For example, the ends of the stiffeners are fixed on these same ones.
elements, by all appropriate means (bolting, riveting, welding, etc.), and in addition, distribution plates are used
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
provided. advantageously with reinforcements j close to the fasteners, and clean, being attached to the ow to the elements f, to the beams and to the stiffeners c, to be of interest, in the transmission of the aforesaid forces, to said beams and said stiffeners, on a certain part of their length, the coating itself being fixed to said sheets, so that the latter can also transmit the forces of said coating.
In the case (fig. 2) of a box with three beams, there is also provided, if necessary, gussets k, suitable for distributing the load of the central beam, a load which is particularly important.
Having such an assembly, we come to fix the ends of the elements f, or on the couple bl, and, of course, as close as possible to the attachments e, or on the ends of the beams a, or else to the both on the pair bl and on said beams. according to the latter arrangement, preferably, the fastening fittings e are arranged in such a way that they are integral with an assembly part suitable for ensuring the connection between the elements f, the beams a and the couple b1, said part being such, for example, or else, according to the embodiment of FIG.
1 - that is to say when said elements are not joined by a web - that it comprises, on the one hand, at least one flange 1 suitable for being fixed to the web of the beam corresponding, and, on the other hand, at least one flange m on which can be fixed the end parts of said elements, and of the pair b1, or else, according to the embodiment of FIG. 2, that it comprises, on the one hand, two flanges II 12 suitable to come to be fixed respectively on the web of the beam a, and on the web which connects the elements e, and, on the other hand. optionally, at least one flange suitable for ensuring the connection with the couple b1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
advantageously, the ends of the beams are arranged in such a manner, close to the attachments e, that the forces supported by the webs of these beams, in particular those due to the influence of the drag, are also concentrated towards said fasteners, which is why, for example, it is provided, at the extreme part of these souls, notches a, the edges of which are suitably reinforced, so that the section concerned with the transmission of forces remains sufficient, a similar arrangement being able to be applied, according to the embodiment of FIG. 2, at the ends of the core g which connects the elements e.
It then seems judicious to connect the fastening fittings located in the plane of the same beam or the parts supporting them, by amounts such as n (fig. 1 and 2).
Finally, in particular in the case of large wings causing the transmission of considerable forces on the elements f, it may be advantageous to relieve a little of these latter, by having recourse to spacers interposed between the elements. called profiled and the couple bl (fig. 2).
As a result, whatever the embodiment adopted, an assembly is obtained which has many advantages over existing structures of the type in question, in particular that of ensuring a logical distribution of the forces close to the points. of attachment on the central wing, that, consequently, to make it possible to avoid the bending or tension forces, in particular in the transverse torques, which leads to a reduction in the weight of the assembly, that of making it possible to reduce or to eliminate the interlocking of the torques, so that movement inside the wing is facilitated.
As goes without saying, and as it follows moreover from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of application, nor to those of the modes of application.
