<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
éventuellement, un tamis-filtre i unique.

"Improvements made to vehicles comprising a casing containing movable components and at the bottom of which lubricant collects, in particular to internal combustion engines operating with casing sea".
The invention relates to vehicles, comprising a casing containing movable members and in the bottom of which comes to collect lubricant; it concerns more particularly (because it is in their case that its application offers the most interest), but not exclusively, among these machines, the internal combustion engines for aircraft operating "with dry sump". that is to say those in which at least one recovery pump draws the lubricant falling to the bottom of the crankcase to send it to a lubricant reservoir from where the latter is returned to the engine by at least one lubricating pump.
Its aim, above all, is to make said devices such that the circulation of their lubricant is ensured under better conditions than hitherto, especially for high speeds of rotation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It consists, mainly, in providing, in the casing of machinery of the kind in question, a system of screens or the like capable of subtracting, at least in part, the lubricant collecting at the bottom of said casing, from the effect of the swirling of the ain produced, in this same casing, by the rapid displacement of the organs contained therein.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time, and which will be discussed more explicitly below.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application, as well as certain methods of implementation, of said provisions; and it relates more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, to the machines of the type in question, in particular the internal combustion engines, comprising application of the aforesaid provisions, the special elements specific to their establishment, thus as assemblies, fixed or mobile, in particular aircraft, comprising such devices.
And it could, in any case., Be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawing, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Figs. 1 and 2 of these drawings represent, respectively, the first in partial axial vertical section, and the second in partial section according to 2-2 FIG. 1, an explosion engine for an airplane ... established in accordance with the invention.
According to the invention, and more particularly according to that of. its modes of application, as well as those of. embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, having, for example, an explosion engine, comprising at least one row of cylinders a whose.

connecting rods act on the various meanetons of a crankshaft b, enclosed in a single crankcase, and provided with a lubrication system c comprising, on the one hand, at least one lubrication pump d fed into a reservoir of lubricant e and delivering the lubricant will go to the various points of use of the engine, and, on the other hand, at least one recovery pump f drawing the lubricant from the bottom of the crankcase c and returning it to the aforesaid reservoir e, and proposing to arrange this engine in accordance with the invention, the procedure is as follows, or analogously.
A system of screens or the like suitable for removing, at least in part, the lubricant collecting at the bottom of said housing from the effect of the swirling of the air produced, in this case is provided in the casing c. same crankcase, by rapid movement of the crankshaft and connecting rods.
Depending on whether each crankpin of the crankshaft rotates in a separate capacity, or whether several of them rotate in a common capacity, one or more screen systems are provided for the same die, and, likewise for each capacity. city of the casing, the screen system to be made to include it is made up, either by a single device common to all the handlebars rotating in this capacity, or by several related devices, each one, to some only (or even to only one) of the aforesaid crankpins.
If it is more particularly proposed to have recaurs to a single device for all the crankpins rotating in the capacity (supposedly unique) of the aforesaid casing c, an advantageously constitutes this device, either by any system of appropriate partitions or baffles carried by the casing inside, or better, by a screen ± which is placed in the casing, in such a way that it separates from the part of said casing where the crankshaft or the connecting rods move, a chamber h, located at the bottom of the casing, chamber at the bottom of which @

is supplied to the recovery pump or pumps f, preferably in sumps h1,
h arranged at both ends of the crankcase if it is an engine intended to operate at fairly steep inclinations, as occurs for airplanes.
This screen g is formed in such a way that the passages which it presents are times larger (for example of dimensions at least / larger) than those of the interstices remaining between the threads of the filter screens often interposed between the interior of the crankcase and the areas where the recovery pumps f are supplied, so that the lubricant can pass through the screen g without encountering the resistance to its passage that it encounters when passing through the aforesaid filter screens.
Thus, for example, the screen g will advantageously be formed, either by a sheet of perforated sheet metal with holes of several millimeters in diameter (for example 4 m / m), or by one. device, in shutters, having similar openings, for example to those presented by certain shutters for dwellings, or by any other suitable similar devices.
Of course, the screen g can be advantageously used at the same time as the filter screen which has just been discussed.
The filter screen, for example made up of a very tight fabric of metal threads, is then placed below the screen and, preferably, separated from the latter, the distance separating the screen i from the screen. 4 may be 15 to 20 mm., But may, of course, vary in strong. limits below. or beyond, these values.
In the event that a screen 4 per crankpin is provided, this in no way prevents, as we see fit, from providing a single chamber h below the various screens, as well as,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
optionally, a single filter screen i.
Also, in the case where the engine comprises elements (such as its valve control, a reduction gear, a compressor) of which the outgoing lubricant flows can be channeled before their return into the crankcase, provision is made, in order to channel said flows, of ducts which are made to open above the screen and possibly between the screen 1 and the screen if a screen i has been provided}.
As a result, in all cases, an engine is obtained, the operation of which, from the point of view of the recovery of lubricant, is as follows.
The lubricant dripping in the crankcase has passed through the screen with difficulty and meets, under this screen, with the lubricant coming from the conduits j.
There, protected from the violent swirling of air prevailing above the screen g, the lubricant can filter through the screen i for all the usual inclinations of the engine, whereas, if the screen does not did not exist, said lubricant would be greatly hampered in passing through the screen.
It has in fact been observed that at high rotational speeds, the recovery pumps f de-prime at irregular intervals, the lubricant accumulating on the screen i, more particularly in its middle and being alo, rs driven by air swirls. This results in
EMI5.1
detrimental lubrication in the crankcase.
Thanks to the presence of the screen g, on the contrary, - everything goes normally and the consumption of lubricant per horse-hour remains substantially constant, whatever the speed of rotation. All the well-known drawbacks of excess lubrication at high speeds are thus avoided.
As goes without saying, and as it emerges moreover already from what precedes, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application nor to those of the models.

of realization:; of its. various pities, having been more particularly considered, * it embraces., on the contrary, all of them. variants, particularly those where the invention would be applied to engines containing their reserve of lubricant in the crankcase.
