 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 devant de la boîte de résonance 5 de manière que la gueule du cône supplémentaire 15 entre en contact avec le diaphragme prin- cipal 1,tandis que le   sanmet   du cône supplémentaire 15 en ques- tion est porté par une bague 17/fixée sur la partie avant de la boîte avant d.e la boîte de résonance b dont question;

  "Improvements to conical diaphragms for sound reproducing and recording devices".

   The invention relates to conical diaphragms for apparatus for reproducing and recording sound. It is characterized by a diaphragm which can move or expand freely under the effect of the lowest pressure. The invention applies especially to the diaphragms of the resonance boxes of gramophones; it allows to make use of a diaphragm more robust than up to. that at the present time, while at the same time it increases the sensitivity of the latter, which enables it to operate easily when the oscillatory movements of the needle or stylet occur: while it is moving in the groove of the disc.

   In general terms, the invention consists of a diaphragm

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 me for gramophone resonance box formed of a planar blank which is bent to give it the conical shape so that the ridges or radical edges overlap each other elastically to allow free movement expansion of the conical element under the lightest pressure and to return the conical element to its normal dimensions when the pressure ceases to act.

   The blank which forms the diaphragm is preferably an aluminum blank or an aluminum alloy blank; the extent of the overlap is calculated in such a way that the maximum pressure resulting, for example, from the movement of the stylus bar (as occurs in a resonance box) does not cause the spacing or opening too considerable of the edges of the conical element which overlap.

   To make the invention easily understood, reference will be made to the description which follows, made with the aid of the attached drawings, Figures 1 and 2 of which respectively show a front view and a side view of a main boot diaphragm resonance; Figures 3 and 4 are respectively a sectional view and a rear view of an insulating diaphragm for use in conjunction with the main diaphragm; FIG. 5 is a vertical section showing a resonance box provided with the diaphragm in question; FIG. 6 is a view similar to FIG. 5, but shows a variant which will be discussed later.

   To carry out the invention, and in accordance with the drawings, a blank 1 in the form of a disc of aluminum or aluminum alloy split radially from the center of the circumference is used. The disc 1 is then shaped or bent. to give it the conical shape to the edges 2,2 of the slot overlap one another so as to be able to slide one over the other.

   The conical diaphragm thus formed has an elasticity which enables it to react easily under the effect of the weakest pressure acting on its apex, to which apex is fixed the inner end of the stylus bar 3, as shown. :through

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   @ figure 5.

   On its outer edge, the diaphragm 1 carried on a tubular-shaped rubber rod 4, housed in the front part of the resonance box 5; it is maintained under elastic pressure preferably by means of a spring 6 which acts on the stylus bar 3. A second diaphragm7 of somewhat smaller diameter and similar construction, that is to say which has elastic overlapping ridges or edges 8 is preferably disposed with the mouth facing the mouth of the first-mentioned main diaphragm 1.

   The diaphragm 7 which will be called hereafter the insulating diaphragm is preferably fixed by its top on the back 9 of the resonance box 5; the fixing point is arranged in the center with respect to the neck of the tone arm 10. In the back 9 of the resonance box 5 are formed several holes 11 arranged concentrically around the fixing screw 12 of the insulating diaphragm; the apertures 11 in question can line up with a series of apertures 13 made in the insulating diaphragm 7 to form a reduction for the sound waves (exiting the main diaphragm) and allow them to go to the tone arm 10.

   A flat ring 14 (made of either elastic or non-elastic material) is interposed between the edges of the diaphragms 1 and 7 to prevent the latter from coming into direct contact. Said ring may be made of rubber or, for example, of paper or other material of little thickness which need not necessarily be elastic, since a thin, non-elastic ring transmits vibrations. from the main diaphragm 1 to the insulating diaphragm 7 with greater fidelity.

   In FIG. 6 of the drawings, the buffer ring 4 of the diaphragm device described above has been omitted and an additional cone 15 of construction similar to the main diaphragm 1 and the insulating diaphragm 7 is used; holes 16 are made in this cone and it is housed between the main diaphragm 1 and the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 front of the resonance box 5 so that the mouth of the additional cone 15 comes into contact with the main diaphragm 1, while the sanmet of the additional cone 15 in question is carried by a ring 17 / fixed to the part front of the box front of the resonance box b which question;

   on the main diaphragm 1 is fixed the inner end of a stylus bar 3 influenced by a spring which freely passes through the aforementioned ring 17.

   This additional cone 15 has a tendency to reduce its diameter on the mouthpiece side and pushes the diaphragm assembly 1, 7 inward, which compensates for the outward pushing force of the diaphragm. insulator 7 and creates a real floating suspension of the central cone or main diaphragm 1.

   The outer cone 15 and the inner cone 7 (when using three cones) should have equal tension and be thicker than the cone floating at the main diaphragm 1; but when only two cones are used, for example a main diaphragm 1 and an insulating diaphragm 7, the two cones in question 1 and 7 must have the same tension and the same thickness or gauge, which are greater than those of the well-known flat diaphragms of the resonance boots of gramophones.

** ATTENTION ** end of DESC field can contain start of CLMS **.
