<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Mine prop.
This invention relates to mine props comprising at one end a bracing piece capable of being displaced laterally with respect to the prop when a device which holds it in place is removed.
The object of the invention is a mine prop of this type, in which the laterally movable bracing piece is normally held in place by one or more wedges capable of being displaced transversely with respect to the prop. so as to clear the path of this moving part before the prop is removed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
A device may be fitted to the upper end or the lower end of a prop, or formed integrally therewith, which has a recess for engaging the end of the prop, and / or is provided with a projection capable of penetrating into the bore of the prop, if the latter is tubular, or is arranged in any other suitable manner to hold the prop.
According to one embodiment, this device has on the side opposite to the prop a rolling track intended to receive a rolling member (a roller or a ball) normally framed by two wedges adapted to the device so as to be able to be removed entirely or partially, for example enough to give the roller or the ball a certain freedom of movement without allowing it to completely leave the device.
The rolling track may include two slopes inclined in opposite directions and an intermediate part or ridge perpendicular to the axis of the prop, on which the rolling organ rests when the prop is in use.
In practice, the member or rolling part can be disengaged from the two wedges, or else can rest on one of these.
To remove the prop, the free wedge, that is to say the one on which the rolling member is not resting, is removed from the running track, so that when a force is exerted to remove the As a prop, the roller can roll on the track and on the "roof", "wall" or other surface, no longer being stopped on the side where the wedge was removed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Instead of being constituted by inclined planes with or without an intermediate part, the track can have the shape of a convex arc, or it can comprise a single plane or a single inclined groove or, in certain cases, In this case, it may have a flat surface perpendicular to the axis of the prop.
Except in the case where the track is perpendicular to the axis of the prop, a single shim may be used to prevent the movement of the roller in one direction, the inclination of the track being determined in such a manner. to prevent the latter from having a normal tendency to leave the taxiway.
Measures can be taken to prevent the running gear or roller from completely leaving the track.
According to a variant, the device is combined with a bracing piece capable of being interposed between it and the wall or the roof of the gallery, the arrangement being such that the device and this piece together constitute a toggle which can be folded back when one of the two wedges is removed to allow removal of the prop.
In practice, in order to be able to remove the prop, it suffices to remove the free wedge and to push the prop vigorously in the desired direction to cause the folding of the knee lever.
According to another variant, in which the rolling part is interposed between the bracing part and the wall or between this part and the roof of the gallery, the rolling part can be carried by a lever adapted to the prop.

The invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively a vertical section along line 1-1 of FIG. 2 'and an elevation view. of an embodiment. Figs. 3 to 5 represent a variant, Figs. 3 and 4 being views in elevation perpendicular to each other and FIG. 5 a vertical section taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 3.
The same reference numbers designate the same members in the different figures.
In the embodiment shown in Figs.
1 and 2, the upper end of a tubular prop 1 is capped with a cap 2 hollowed out at 3 and having on its upper face a rolling track 4 on which a roller 5 placed normally between two wedges 6, 61 can roll. arranged so that they can be easily removed from the path of the roller 5.
Track 4 has two slopes inclined in opposite directions 41, 42 which meet along a median ridge 43 on which roller 5 rests when the prop is in use.
As will easily be understood, when the prop is subjected to compression, the roller 5 is prevented from moving laterally by one or the other of the wedges 6, 61.
When it is desired to remove the prop, the free wedge is removed, that is to say the one on which the roller 5 does not rest, so that when a force is exerted to remove the prop, the roller can run on the open face of track 4 and on roof 14.

The sides of the raceway 41, 42 are bounded by flanges 7 integral with the cap 2 and rising vertically on either side of the latter., And these flanges are provided, on the inner side, curved grooves 8 in which the ends of a pin 9 engage which passes axially through the roller 5. The meeting of the ends of the pin 9 with the ends 81 of the grooves 8 prevents the roller 5 from leaving the cap 2 when 'we remove the prop.
The wedges 6, 61 pass through openings 10 made in the flanges 7 and are attached to the cap 2 by chains 11 which prevent them from being lost.
The cap 2 is fixed to the upper end of the prop 1 by a bolt 12 which passes diametrically through the recess 3 and the prop 1, the holes 13 made in the latter for the passage of the bolt 12 being sufficiently wide to prevent it from being subjected to fatigue under the action of the compression exerted on the prop.
The position which the roller 5 assumes with respect to the cap 2 when the prop is removed after having removed the wedge 61, is indicated in chain lines in FIG. 1.
In the variant shown in Figs. 3 to 5, the cap 21 adapted to the upper end of the prop 1 is combined with elements articulated between them, 16, 17, intended to be interposed between the cap 21 and the roof 14, the arrangement being such that the cap 21 and the members 16 17 together constitute an articulated toggle which can be folded up to allow the removal of the prop.
On either side of the part 16 are arranged wedges 18, 181 which cannot simultaneously carry A
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
against part 16 and can be released separately or simultaneously from the latter.
In practice, to remove the prop, it suffices to remove the free wedge 18 or 181, and to force the prop in the desired direction to cause the folding of the knee lever.
The part 16 is constituted by a connecting rod articulated at 19 to the cap 21 and at 20 to the part 17 which forms a kind of pad pressing against the roof 14.
The folded position taken by pieces 16 and 17 when the prop is removed after removing the wedge 18 to release the piece 16 is shown in chain lines in FIG. 5.
When it comes to props with H-profile or other laminated profile, the cap 2 or 21 can be dispensed with. For example, a roller 5 can be inserted between the wings or tables of a prop having a profile in H, so that it rests on a track fixed to the web of the stanchion cut at a small distance from the end of the stanchion proper; or else, according to a variant, the part 16 may be interposed between these wings or tables.
