Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Fig. 1 est une élévation en bout d'un bossoir de manoeuvre d'embarcation réalisé suivant l'invention, mon- trant en traits pleins la position intérieure des daviers, et en traits mixtes leur position extérieure;
Fig. 2 est une élévation de côté du bossoir repré- senté sur la fig. l, le canot étant dans sa position arri- mée ou intérieure;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  Improvements to the davits for the maneuvering of boats.

   This invention relates to davits for the maneuvering of boats comprising a pair of davits intended to support a boat, a lifeboat for example, in the stowed or inside position, and to move outwards. of the ship to allow the boat to be launched if necessary, either by hand or using a winch or other device.

   The main object of the invention is to produce davits making it possible to launch the canoes regardless of the band the ship gives following an accident -

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 for example, and thanks to which it is possible to lower the boat in the event that the davits are out of use due to damage, whether these are stowed or in position for launching .

   According to the invention, the davits are articulated by their base, to the deck of the ship at a certain distance from the planking, towards the interior, so that they can swing laterally from the stowed position towards the exterior or setting position. at the water. Each davit is slidably connected to one end of a forestay, the other end of which is hinged to the deck of the ship in line with the trim. Each davit has stops intended to engage with the stay or a member thereof, in order to limit the relative movement of the stay and the davit.

   Preferably, the davits are constructed in H-section beams, they are bent outwards, and a guide roller is mounted at their free end on which pass the halyards supporting the boat, these being connected. to a winch or other mechanism, by means of which the canoe can be hoisted or hoisted at will. The forestay, also constituted by an H-section beam, forms an angle of approximately 45 with the ship's deck when the davit is stowed in its interior position, and rises in line with the side of the ship when the davit in its external or launching position.

   The free end of each of the props carries a pair of plates embracing the corresponding holding forceps, fitted with rollers surrounding the holding forceps and bearing against the latter in order to allow it to be moved from one to the other. its positions, with more ease. Each davit has stops @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 upper and lower, intended to limit the relative movement of the forestay and consequently to determine the interior and exterior positions of the davit.

   The struts comprise wedges intended to support the boat in its stowed position and which can be moved to allow the boat to slide along the tilted struts to take its external position. As the boat is moved to its outboard position, its weight swings the davits over their joints and pulls them into the outboard position, so that the boat is suspended outside the vessel and can be brought up and down. Put it in the water using an ordinary winch.

   The invention is especially applicable to lifeboats fitted with skids such as, for example, those described in British Patent No. 329,274. When these pads are used, the props are connected to each other using a horizontal support bar placed between their ends, intended to support a pair of tracks or slides placed between the rollers. and fixed to the bridge at points located in line with the joints of the struts. These slides bear against the support bar and, when the davits are placed in their external position, they move with the stays, to take a position parallel to the sides of the vessel. The slides are the extension of runways or slides attached to the side of the ship, along which the boat slides on its runners up to the water level.

   In order to make the invention fully understood and to allow it to be easily carried out, it will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

Fig. 1 is an end elevation of a boat maneuvering davit produced according to the invention, showing in solid lines the internal position of the davits, and in phantom lines their external position;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the davit shown in FIG. l, the boat being in its stowed or interior position;
Fig. 3 is a plan view, partially in section, taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1.

   The davits 1, 2 are fixed to the deck 3 of the ship using pivot joints 4, 5 respectively. They are bent towards the outside and include at their free end guide rollers 6-6, over which pass the halyards 7 intended to support the boat 8 by means of pulleys 9. They are hoisted and brought up. or lower the canoe, if necessary, using a winch or other mechanism (not shown).

   Each davit is slidably connected to one end of the corresponding forestay 10, the other end of which is articulated to the deck of the ship, so that when the boat 8 is launched the davit can be lifted. move automatically from the inside position shown in solid lines (fig. 1) to the outside position shown in broken lines. This movement of the davits is limited by stops 11, 12 fixed to each of them so as to engage with the stay. Each stay 10 comprises a pair of plates 13, 14, which are fixed therein so as to embrace the corresponding holder 1 and carry rollers 15, 16 intended to guide the latter in its lateral movement.

   These plates bear against the stops 11 and 12 when the davits are respectively,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 in their interior and exterior position, and thus determine the position of the davits relative to the ship's deck. The arrangement of the members is such that the struts 10 form an angle of approximately 45 with the plane of the deck when the davits are in their internal position, and that they are dassed substantially in line with the side of the ship when the davits are in position. in their outward position, so that it is the ship's planking which supports the weight of the boat and the forces produced when it is launched
Wedges 17 are articulated to the struts 10 by 18, each of them being held in the operating position by a detachable pin 19 passing through the corresponding strut.

  When the davits are in their interior position, the boat is therefore supported in its normal inactive position. When the pins 19 are removed, the chocks 17 fall by their own weight and release the boat. If the winch is then activated with a view to bringing the boat, the latter goes down until its weight is sufficient to automatically drive the davits 1, 2 from their inside position to their outside position. It hangs at a distance from the side of the ship, and can be brought to water level and launched in the ordinary way.

   In the case where the invention is applied to lifeboats provided with runners such, for example, as those described in British Patent No. 329,274. these runners cooperate with a horizontal support bar 20, connected to the props 10 at intermediate points of their length and intended to support a pair of slides or raceways 21, 22, the lower ends of which are articulated to the bridge of the ship, through arti-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 pivot culations 23, 24 aligned with the joints of the props 10. When the davits tilt into their external position, the slides therefore advance with the props and stand in line with the side of the ship.

   The slides or raceways 21, 22 form the extension of slides or raceways, fixed to the side of the ship as described in British Patent No. 329,274 already cited. When the boat 8 is released, its runners guide it along the slides 21, 22, and then along those fixed to the side of the ship, until it reaches the water level. This arrangement is especially useful when it comes to launching the starboard boats of a ship giving tape to port, or vice versa.

   We choose the location of the base of the davits and that of the points where the props 10 are articulated to the deck, so that we can, on the one hand, secure the boat in its interior position, and on the other hand lower it. along the side of the ship when the davits are in their outward position, and also so that the struts 10 make the desired angle with the plane of the deck.

   To use the davit, the chocks supporting the canoe are released and the boat can then be put into the water using a winch. As the boat descends, the inclined struts 10 leave the lower stops 12 and slide along the davits 1, 2 until they come into contact with the upper stops 11. The boat thus placed in its position outside is then ready to be lowered along the side of the ship. When the ship gives tape, the boats on the raised side descend along the slides 21, 22 and those attached to the side

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 of the ship, the davits being placed automatically in the external position, as soon as the weight of the boat is sufficient to pull them there.

   Even if the davits cannot leave their interior position due to damage, the boats can be lowered by freeing the holds. Likewise, the sliders remain fixed in their interior position in the event of launching a dinghy located on the lowered side of a ship giving bandage, which facilitates the embarkation of passengers, reduced the risks of the operation to a minimum, and then allows the boat to be launched very close to the ship.

   In order to prevent shocks from occurring when the inclined forestay reaches its outward position, suitable shock absorbers can be used. Likewise, an appropriate stop can be provided to keep the forestay in the external position, on the raised side of a ship giving very strong strip.

   The device according to the invention makes it possible to launch a lifeboat at any time, regardless of the height of the ship, simply by releasing its holds in order to lower it and simultaneously actuating the davits of its davit. 'In addition, when the boat has runners intended to compensate for the strip of the ship, it is only necessary to modify the davits so that they can accommodate the boat plus the thickness of the runners, without having to give the davits excessive outer reach to launch the vessels of a vessel giving abnormal bandwidth.
