 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 geur 51.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

  "IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO A GEARBOX"
The present invention relates to gearboxes for vehicles, comprising a freewheel device.

   In most cases it is highly desirable to use the freewheel; however, in certain circumstances, the use of the freewheel is not advisable. Thus, when going down steep slopes, it is necessary to slow down the speed of the vehicle by a positive coupling to the engine, either in direct drive or in a more geared down speed. In addition, it is understood that when the vehicle is driven in reverse, it is essential to make the free wheel inoperative, or, as we say more frequently, to "block" the latter.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   When engaging in reverse gear, it is almost essential that the freewheel be automatically blocked; furthermore, it is necessary for the release of reverse gear to have the effect of automatically re-engaging the freewheel. If it was not essential that the freewheel could also be controlled independently, it would have been sufficient to provide a simple connection between the freewheel and the reverse gear commando fork, in order to obtain the desired operation. However, it is at the same time important to have the means to engage or block the freewheel, whatever the forward speed determined by the gearbox, as can occur on a downhill, so that a simple connection is not admissible.

   The present invention consists in establishing a gearbox for vehicles, of the type mentioned above, and comprising means making it possible to positively and automatically lock the freewheel when the reverse gear is engaged.

   The invention also consists in establishing control means ensuring the positive locking of the freewheel, either when shifting into reverse gear, or by actuating manual maneuvering members, the arrangement being such that said means controls elastically apply the freewheel in its engaged position, by actuating them again. In all known freewheel devices capable of being positively blocked, there is a great advantage in providing means for resiliently disengaging the blocking claw, since it is often impossible to remove. '' perform a positive release.

   This is because, once the clutch has been released, the rollers or other clamping devices always press strongly.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the teeth of the locking device against each other, so that in order to unlock the freewheel it is first necessary to overcome the friction of said clamping devices. With a resiliently acting release device, the maneuver can be performed while the actual release of the freewheel will only take place later and after a motor torque in the opposite direction has been allowed to act on the freewheel.

In the accompanying drawings, reference numeral 10 generally denotes a gearbox, the front end of which is joined to the rear end of an internal combustion engine, and the front and rear walls of which have coaxial openings intended to receive bearings.

   A helical pinion 11 joined directly to the coupling shaft of the motor is rotatably mounted in a ball bearing 12 provided in the box 10, in the opening formed in the front wall of the latter. A grooved primary shaft is rotatably mounted by its front end, in an annular bore of pinion 11, the rear part of this shaft being rotatably mounted by means of a ball bearing 14, in the rear wall of the gear. casing 10. A suitable secondary shaft 15 is fixed in the lower part of this casing, parallel to and at a certain distance from the grooved shaft 13, this secondary shaft carrying, in rotation, a group of integral pinions 16, of which the largest helical gear 17 is constantly in mesh with the gear 11.

   The middle portion of the pinion group 16 has a second gear helical drive gear 18, located so as to remain in constant engagement with a second gear driven helical gear 19 rotatably mounted on the grooved shaft 13. As shown in Fig. 2, the pinion 11, as well as the pinion 19, are each provided with a contiguous annular claw 20, a drive member 21 being mounted non-rotatably on the part of the grooved shaft 13 lying between the two claws 20 opposite.

  On the drive member 21, the outer face of which is grooved, there is slidably mounted a coupling sleeve 22 grooved below and arranged so as to be able to mesh with one or the other of the claws 20, c 'that is to say so as to wedge, relative to the shaft, either the pinion 11 of the coupling shaft, in order to give the grip

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 direct, or the pinion 19 of second speed, so as to give an intermediate speed
As shown in Fig. 2, the movement to the left of the pinion 19 is prevented by the drive member 31, while its movement to the right is prevented by a collar 23 shown in more detail in FIG. 5.

   The groove shaft 13 is provided with an annular groove 24, while the annular collar 23 is provided with notches thanks to which it can move longitudinally on this shaft to be brought near beyond-, groove 24. The bore of the collar 23 has the same diameter as the bottom of the groove 24, so that when this collar is near this groove, it suffices to turn it by a distance equal to half the width of a groove to prevent any axial displacement of the collar.

   A suitable spring loaded plunger 25 is resiliently fixed in shaft 13 so that when the collar is turned to bring it into its immobilized position said plunger jumps up to engage. in a suitable notch provided in one of the teeth of the collar, so as to prevent any relative rotation between the collar and the grooved shaft. To allow clearance of the collar 23, an axial opening 26 is provided therein through which a rod can be inserted with a view to lowering the plunger, which has the effect of releasing said collar.

   The gears for first gear and reverse gear are arranged as follows:
The first speed gear 27 and the reverse gear 28 are part of the group of integral gears 16. The reverse gear 28 is constantly in engagement with the reverse idle gear 29, a driven gear 30 being mounted non-rotatably and at sliding on a grooved shaft 13, between the bearing 14 and the collar 23, so as to engage, at will, either with the pinion 27, or with the pinion

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 crazy reverse 29.

   Therefore, by moving the pinion 30 rearward (i.e. to the right in Fig. 1), said idler gear is caused to drive the grooved shaft.
13 at low speed and in the opposite direction, while moving forward (i.e. to the left, in Fig. 1) causes the shaft 13 to rotate at low speed in the direction of forward gear. Two usual portable forks are provided, the arrangement being such that the fork 31 works in a suitable groove made in the sleeve 22, while a reverse fork 32 works in a suitable groove provided in the hub of the pinion 30. .

   Each of these forks is attached to one of the two player bars 33 slidably mounted in the upper part of the gearbox and located outside the housing to provide sufficient accessibility in order to be able to be moved in the gearbox. one or the other direction by means of a suitable gear lever.

   The freewheel combined with the gearbox described above is made up as follows:
A housing 35 is fixed to the rear end of the housing 10, so as to cover the end of the grooved shaft 13.

  The housing 35 not only houses the rear end of the gear change mechanism, but also has a shoulder by means of which a plate 36 pressed into the face close to this shoulder, of said housing, can be rigidly fixed in it. this last. The plate 36 reaches, inside, the periphery of the ball bearing 14, this bearing being provided with an annular groove in which a resilient pin ring 37 engages. Once in place, the plate 36 presses the outer part of the ring 37 against the rear wall of the housing 10, so that any axial displacement of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 ball bearing 14 is prevented.

   This characteristic, although not of particular importance, nevertheless constitutes one of the many new characteristic features which provide the gearbox according to the invention with an exceptionally compact, economical, rigid structure which is not liable to take on damage. game. The outer end of the housing 35 carries a ball bearing 66 in which the hub of a flask 38 is rotatably mounted. The latter is integral with a ring 39 projecting forward, which surrounds the end rear of shaft 13 and is coaxial with it.

  In order to ensure the constant alignment of the ring 39 with the shaft 13, the hub of the flange 38 is mounted with grooves on the shaft 40 having an extension 41 oriented towards the front and coming to be housed in an annular bore provided in the rear part of the shaft 13, this arrangement allowing rotation and at the same time ensuring permanent alignment of the shaft 40 and the ring 39 with respect to the shaft 13. A universal joint 67 mounted in grooves on the rear end of the shaft 40, is joined to the driving wheels of the vehicle through the transmission shaft, such that the ring 39, the shaft 40 and the seal universal 42 can always turn as a single unit directly with said drive wheels.

   The device according to the invention comprises a freewheel of the roller type, constituted by a ring with ramps 42, mounted with grooves on the rear end of the shaft 13 and in axial alignment with the rear part of the ring. 39. The ring 42 has several ramps cut in its material, several rollers 43 being arranged between the ring 39 and said ramps, and the arrangement being such that these rollers are elastically pressed, so as to come to rest against

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 their respective ramps, by means of a series of helical springs 44.

   These ramps are arranged in such a way that when the shaft 13 is driven by the motor, with a view to dragging the vehicle forward, said rollers constitute a drive link acting in such a way as to drag. the vehicle in a positive manner, while, when the rear wheels of the vehicle tend to drive the shaft 13, said rollers are detached from said ramps, so as to allow the ring 39 to rotate at a higher speed than the ramp ring 42.

   So that the freewheel can be blocked and engaged at will, a locking disc 45 is provided, mounted with grooves on the shaft 13, between the bearing 14 and the ring with ramps 42, the periphery of this disc being for - View of a series of external locking teeth arranged so as to cooperate with a series of internal teeth cut in the front end of the ring 39. Thus, when the disc 45 is moved axially towards its extreme rear position (to the right, in Fig. 2) the ring 39 is positively connected and without relative play in either direction to the shaft 13, which ensures a drive connection in both directions between the shaft 13 and the rear driving wheels of the vehicle.

   It can easily be seen that when the device is to be driven in reverse, the direction of rotation of the shaft 13 must be reversed, so that, to obtain a positive drive in reverse, it is necessary to engage the disc 45 It will also be appreciated that there is a great advantage in having means controlled by the gear lever and intended to automatically engage the locking disc 45, so as to prevent the driver of the vehicle from having to make an additional maneuver. To this end, the invention provides means actuated by the fork 32 of the reversing device and established

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 so as to control not only the pinion 30, but also the locking disc 45.

   The latter disc has an annular groove in which is housed a control fork of 46, so that any axial displacement, in one or the other direction, of the fork, produces an identical displacement of the disc 45. A rod 47, riveted to the fork 46, extends forwards through the rear parai of the gear housing 10 to end immediately behind the fork 32 of the reverse gear, so that by moving the pinion 30 towards the rear, this latter fork abuts against the front end of the rod 47 and moves the latter towards the rear, which has the effect of engaging the disc 45 and locking the freewheel.

   As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the invention also provides means for the manual control of the disc 45. The control fork 46 is integral with a part 48 in the form of a sleeve, which extends forward, in a suitable bore. 49 provided in the housing 10, so that, in its movement, the fork is supported by the sleeve 48 and the rod 47. Thanks to this arrangement, the fork itself does not come into direct contact with the bottom of the groove of the disc 45, which has the effect of extending the life of the device. The front end of the sleeve 48 is brought inwards so as to constitute a seat for a compression spring 50, a plunger 51, mounted axially in the bore of the sleeve 48, being provided with a head 52 in the middle. - actuation of the opposite end of the spring 50.

   A split elastic ring 53 is inserted into a suitable groove made in the rear end of the sleeve 48, so that, once the plunger 51 has been inserted into said sleeve and the ring 53 in place, the plunger can be moved. towards the rear so as to positively engage the disc 45, and thus positively block the freewheel. It follows from the above that the displacement of the plunger 51 towards the ar @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 This will have the effect of engaging the locking disc in a desmodromic fashion, while the forward movement of this disc will produce the release of the latter in an elastic manner.

   To make it possible to actuate the plunger 51 by the driver, the front end of this plunger is provided with a notch intended to receive a connecting rod 54 pivotally joined to said plunger and fixed to one end of a wire or flexible cable 55. A tubular sheath 56 is removably joined, by means of a nut 57, to the casing 10, this wire and this sheath extending upwards to the rear face of a dashboard 58 ( Fig. 4), the upper end of the tubular sheath being joined to a support 59 fixed behind the lower edge of the dashboard. This support also carries a handle or lever 60 pivotally mounted in said support and the operating end of which is extended so as to be easily accessible to the driver.

   The upper, i.e. shorter, end of lever 60 is pivotally joined to cable 55, so that when this lever is moved to the position shown in solid lines in FIG.

  4, the plunger 51 comes to occupy its forward position, thus engaging the freewheel. When the lever is raised so as to bring it into the position shown in dotted lines 61, the plunger 51 is moved rearward, so as to block the freewheel.

   So that the position of the plunger 51 is not modified by the rearward movement of the fork 46, movement produced under the action of the reverse gear fork 32, a cup 62 (FIG. 3) mounted at sliding in a vertical borehole made in the casing 10, this cup being elastically pushed downwards, by means of a spring 63, to come to rest against the plunger.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 geur 51. The latter has two notches 64, 65, the arrangement being such that the cup 62 is engaged in the notch 64 while the freewheel is engaged, and comes to engage in the notch 65 when the said plunger is moved by hand with a view to locking the freewheel.

   While the freewheel is locked under the action of the reverse gear fork, the spring 50 is compressed for the reason that the plunger is locked by the cup 62 in its front position, so that after the passage from reverse gear to neutral point, the spring 50 will act in the direction of an elastic release of the claw 45, which will have the effect of engaging the freewheel. Without this action of the said cup, the actuation of the claw 45 by the reverse gear fork would simply have the effect of bringing the plunger 51, the cable 55 and the lever 60, into the position shown in lines. dotted lines in Fig. 4, in such a way that after returning to the neutral point, it would have been necessary to operate the lever 60 to engage the freewheel again.

   The operation of the device according to the invention is shown in detail in Figs. 6 to 8. FIG. 6 schematically shows the various components of the device in the neutral point position, the freewheel being engaged. In this position, the cup is engaged in the notch 64 and the head 52 of the plunger bears against a fixed stop provided in the rear end of the sleeve 48.

   If at this time it is desired to reverse, the pinion 30 is moved to the right to bring it into the position shown in FIG. 7, which will have the effect that the fork 32 will abut against the rod 47 by pushing the fork 46 and the coupling disc 45 backwards, so as to block the freewheel.

   The sleeve 48 obviously moves with the fork 48, however, and since the plunging

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 geur 51 is immobilized by the cup 62, this displacement of the sleeve will have no other effect than simply compressing the spring 50..If, at this moment, we go from reverse gear to another speed, the spring 50 simply push the sleeve 48 and the coupling disc 45 forward, so as to re-engage the freewheel, as shown in Fig. 6. It is understood that the control lever 60 remains stationary during the maneuver which has just been described.

   If at this time, it is desired to block the freewheel, as is necessary in the descent of rapid slopes, the lever 60 is drawn backwards, so as to push the plunger 51 backwards, to bring it into the position shown in FIG. 8. At this moment, the head 52 comes to rest directly against the elastic ring 53, which allows a positive engagement of the locking disc 45 and, consequently, a positive locking of the freewheel. When it is desired to return the device to the position shown in FIG. 6, the lever 60 is returned to its initial position, which has the effect of attracting the plunger 51 forward and compressing the spring 50, thus elastically uncoupling the locking disc 45.

   It follows from the foregoing that the reverse gear control fork and the hand control device act to bring the coupling disc 45 backwards in a desmodromic manner, and to lock thus positi "vement the freewheel, the arrangement being such that when said control means act in the opposite direction, they elastically put the claw 45 out of engagement, so as to engage the freewheel.

   All known freewheels have this characteristic feature that they can be easily blocked by simply locking the two rotating members to one another,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 but that they require a great effort when it comes to re-engaging the freewheel. Once the freewheel has been locked and the clutch has been performed, the frictional resistance, - or coupled in reverse gear, - of the engine is transmitted by the teeth of the ring 39 and of the disc 45.

   This produces a slight relative rotation of the components, which has the effect of pressing very strongly against each other, the opposite faces of the locking teeth and which is transmitted immediately by the rollers of the freewheel, so that, after disengagement, these rollers prevent the locking teeth from returning to their normal position, that is to say central position and retain them in engagement with a force equal to the engine torque generally transmitted by the device.

   This effect is shown in FIG. 9 where it will be seen that in reverse, the ring 39 is caused to move relative to the locking disc 45, to come to occupy the position shown in dotted lines 68, this movement taking place in this case clockwise. Since at this time the rollers 43 are in an appropriate position to allow this movement, they will not put up any resistance. On the other hand, after disengagement, these rollers prevent the outer ring from returning to its central position and releasing the locking teeth.

  This feature prevents disengagement of the disc and, therefore, the engagement of the freewheel. Thanks to the elastic connection provided between the head 52 of the plunger 51 and the control fork of the disc 45, the adhesion of the locking teeth does not prevent either going from reverse gear to the neutral position, or from shifting. move the operating lever 60 to its "freewheel engaged" position, and this despite the locking disc remains in engagement with the ring 39. In the device according to the invention, the locking disc does not turn back. its inactive position only after the gears of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 the box will have executed a few revolutions and the clutch will have been carried out so as to act on the rollers in the opposite direction, which will allow the disc 45 to return springy to its released position.

   If there was a positive connection for maneuvering this disc in both directions, the driver would not have been able to engage the freewheel as long as the vehicle had not actually driven forward.

   An important advantage of the device according to the invention stems from the fact that the freewheel is located between the cardan shaft and the transmission mechanism, this arrangement allowing easy operation of the gears and clogs of the gearbox. . To change speed, it suffices to overcome the inertia of the shaft 13, the pinion 30 and the ring with ramps 42, all rotating at the speed of the cardan shaft. If the freewheel was placed in front of the gearbox, it would be necessary, in order to change speed, to overcome the resistance of a shaft of the same dimensions as shaft 13, but rotating at a much higher speed, as well as the inertia of the group of integral gears.

   This would have the effect of causing a scraping of the gear teeth and the jaws as is the case in gearboxes with sliding pinions, while the arrangement according to the invention reduces the scraping, in which it is equivalent to that of gearboxes comprising complicated and expensive synchronous drive devices. The foregoing will show the advantage of placing the freewheel at the rear of the transmission, despite the additional control means required to block the freewheel in order to switch on. back.

   Certain codifications can be made to the dis-. position, construction and combination of the improved device according to the invention, without departing from the spirit of

 This and the claims which follow are intended to cover all modifications which may reasonably be understood in their field.
