 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

  Improvement in hydraulic couplings
The present invention relates to hydraulic couplings or devices of the kinetic type in which an annular circuit of the active liquid is comprised between a motor rotating element and a driven rotating element having the same axis, each of these two elements comprising a curved limiting shell. the hydraulic circuit; the invention relates in particular to the type of coupling intended to work with a hydraulic circuit partially filled with liquid.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   In order for such couplings to be able to transmit power with high efficiency, that is, with low slip, it is necessary to reduce losses due to the agitation of the motor liquid and the formation of eddies during its turbulent circulation between the driving element and the driven element of the coupling. Consequently, in high efficiency couplings, the various elements forming the hydraulic circuit have a shape such that the hydraulic circuit is limited by free-flowing lines, so that the current of the motor liquid circulating between the element. motor and the driven element is not subjected to sudden deviations during its passage through the elements forming the hydraulic circuit.

   When using high efficiency couplings of the kind described in power transmission devices, it has been found that under certain conditions there can be violent variations in the value of the torque transmitted by the coupling, variations due to instability of the current of liquid flowing between the driving and driven elements of the coupling. For example, in a known power transmission system, the coupling provided with means for varying, during operation, the quantity of liquid in its hydraulic circuit, is interposed between a prime mover and a driven machine requiring a starting torque. very high.

   In this arrangement, while the prime mover is rotating, the driven machine can be started by admitting liquid into the hydraulic circuit and can be brought back to rest by emptying the hydraulic circuit or by reducing the quantity of liquid admitted. We have also found that when we

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 accelerates or slows down, under these conditions, the driven machine, the slip becomes considerable, variations of the torque may occur, so that it is impossible to keep the speed conditions of the driven member stable. These variations can also cause a strong overload of the driving machine, in particular when the inertia of the driven machine is large.

   In another device in which the driving chamber of the coupling is partially filled with a constant amount of liquid, the coupling is employed to connect a variable speed power source to a load requiring a high starting torque. In this device it has been found that variations in torque can take place when the speed of the power source is relatively small and when the slip of the coupling is large.

   It is also known that torque oscillations occur when employing a variable fill type coupling applied to a variable speed power source.

   It is believed that the torque oscillations, mentioned above, are caused in the following way: when a coupling operates with a partially filled hydraulic circuit and its sliding is significant, the. Motor fluid circulation is irregular and indeterminate. If, however, the slip decreases, the circulation takes on a definite shape, for example that of a very fast-moving superficial tourbillon ring. This change in circulation takes place quickly and causes a more or less accentuated acceleration of the driven element or, in other words, a more or less violent variation of power.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

  The current of the liquid then becomes less violent under the increased influence of the centrifugal force passing through the pipes of the driven element, and finally the circulation becomes less intense, so that the value of the torque decreases and the slip increases; the cycle can then start again.

   The subject of the invention is therefore an improved high-efficiency coupling of the type described in which the instability inherent in the apparatus has been eliminated or reduced to a negligible value.

   According to one of the forms of the invention, in a hydraulic coupling or device of the type described above, in which the boundary walls of the motor hydraulic circuit have a smooth shape, the continuity of the free wall is interrupted, and this discontinuity is arranged so as to prevent the very rapid superficial vortex circulation of the liquid, this interruption not however opposing a relatively low resistance to the normal circulation of the liquid, during operation with low slip.

   In a variant of the device forming the subject of the invention, a variant relating to a coupling or a device of the type described above, in which the boundary walls of the motor circuit have a smooth shape and in which the quantity of liquid contained in the drive chamber, comprising this motor circuit is capable of varying during the operation of the coupling, means are provided for creating solutions of continuity of the smooth wall, the purpose of which is to prevent swirling circulation of the liquid .

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   In accordance with. another form of the invention means are provided in the hydraulic coupling of the device of the type described above, in which the boundary walls of the motor circuit are smooth, intended to automatically create - solutions of continuity from the smooth wall to as a result of the variations of the slip occurring in the coupling, with the aim of preventing the swirling circulation of the liquid.

   When the improved coupling works with a partially filled hydraulic circuit and with a relatively high slip and when correlatively the speed of circulation of the motor liquid is high, the solution of continuity creates, in accordance with the invention, for the liquid in circulation, a resistance sufficiently high to suppress the instability of the flow or to limit the degree of the instability to a negligible value. This resistance is arranged in such a way that when the coupling operates with little slip and when correspondingly the speed of the circulation is relatively low, it is located substantially outside the circuit of the liquid current.

  The resistor can still be arranged in such a way that even if it is placed in the path of the slowly flowing current, it is of such size and shape that it does not prevent the maximum efficiency of the transmission from being reached. In other cases, the resistance can be taken out of the hydraulic circuit when the slip is not great.

   By way of example, there has been described below and shown in the accompanying drawing which schematically shows different forms of coupling of the "Vulcan" type (or of the so-called "Fbttinger" type).

   In the various examples cited, the driving element 3 is integral with the driving shaft 1, while the driven element 4 is fixed on the driven shaft 2.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   A part of the casing 5 which surrounds the shell of the driven element 4 is connected to the periphery of the driving element 3 and forms with the latter a working chamber for the liquid of the coupling. The motor element is provided with alternately long and short blades 7 and 6, integral with the shell, which support the guide core 10.

  Similarly, the driven element 4 is also provided with alternately short and long blades 9 and 8 supporting the guide core 11. The inlet pipes 12 of the liquid are formed in the mass of the core of the. motor element 3 or driven element 4, the outlet ports 13 serving to evacuate the active liquid from the working chamber. A valve 14 of the supply line of the engine liquid under suitable pressure, regulates the admission of the latter into the working chamber.

   In the device shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a fixed sleeve 15 surrounding the driven shaft 2 is provided with an intake duct 16 and an exhaust duct 17 for the engine liquid. The sleeve is fixed by bolts (not shown) to a distribution manifold with partitions 18 and 19 comprising an intake duct 26 and an exhaust duct 25 for the engine liquid. An evacuation tube 20 which communicates via the duct 17 with the exhaust 25 is fixed on the sleeve 15 and it is housed in the cavity 27 located between a casing 5 and another outer casing 21 fixed to the periphery of the chamber 6 and suitably connected to distributor 18, 19.

   The free end of the 2D tube is oriented in the opposite direction to that of the normal movement of the neighboring parts of the coupling. The discharge orifices 13 have a reduced cross section and they establish communication between the working chamber and the discharge cavity 27,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

A star-shaped piece 22 comprising radial teeth 23 is fixed by screws 24 to the hub of the driven element 4, the arrangement being such that two teeth 23 are placed in each of the intervals between two successive long blades 9.

   The operation of this device is as follows: the liquid enters the coupling through the valve 14, the passage 26 and the conduits 16 and 12 and enters the working circuit through a connection space between the elements of the coupling. As long as there is liquid in the working chamber, it is discharged in a limited quantity through the orifices 13 and is then removed from the discharge cavity 27 through the tube 20, from where it enters. the conduit 17 and in the exhaust passage 25. As a result, the quantity of liquid in the working chamber can be varied at will by acting on the valve 14.

   The high speed superficial swirling ring, as formed when the amount of the liquid is relatively small and the slip is large, meets the teeth 23 and is partially destroyed, which prevents the establishment of a drip regime. unstable flow. When the quantity of liquid in the working circuit increases, the speed of the circulation decreases and the slip decreases; the effect produced by the teeth 23 becomes less accentuated, and, when the coupling works under conditions of less sliding, these teeth oppose only insignificant resistance to the hydraulic flow. The action of these teeth can be quickly modified by inclining them more or less with respect to the plane in which the hydraulic junction between the elements of the coupling is located.

   A coupling of this type can work with a maximum efficiency of about 98.5%, in the absence

 of the star-shaped part, while the addition of this part, the shape of which would moreover be liable to render the effect of sudden power variations negligible, reduces the efficiency by less than 1%.

   Referring to the device of Figures 3 and 4, the liquid is discharged from the working chamber through an orifice 13a made in the casing 5a, which can be continuously controlled by a shutter ring 33. The inlet of the liquid is made by a fixed sleeve 30 surrounding the shaft 2 and provided with an annular duct 31 which communicates by means of radial channels drilled in the shaft 2 with an axial duct 32 formed in this shaft and communicating in turn with the channels 12a leading to the working chamber of the coupling. In this device, the long blades 9 of the driven element are provided with tongues 34 placed on their flow side and arranged so as to mask part of the passage of the liquid on the side of the trailing edge of the blades taken with respect to the direction of flow. normal rotation of the coupling.

   In the variant shown in Figure 5, the discharge passages are formed by tubes 13b starting from the annular channel 40, which is located inside the guide core 10a and arranged in the driving element 3a, while the ducts of intake 12b are formed in the hub of the driven element 4a. The hydraulic circuit has at its most radially inwardly advanced part a kind of step 41 oriented against the normal direction of circulation of the active liquid and comprising an upper surface 42 and a lower surface 43, both embedded in the wall. smooth limit of the hydraulic circuit. The corresponding outline of the circuit in a normally-shaped coupling is shown in dotted lines at 44.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   In this variant, the step serves to destroy the very rapid surface current, but it is filled by a mattress of a more or less inert liquid, when a slower and deeper current passes above it; the result therefore is that the step offers very low resistance to circulation when the coupling is operating at full speed, with the hydraulic circuit full and, consequently, with little slip.

   In the device Figure 6 the part of the hydraulic circuit closest to the axis of rotation of the coupling-.ment also has an enlarged section, the part closest to the axis being formed by curves 50 and 51 arranged to form an annular pocket or depression.

  An annular part 52 is fixed to one of the elements 3b or 4b of the coupling, for example to the driven element 4b.

  This part is fixed using screws 53 and its diameter is such that it engages in the hydraulic circuit. Channels 12c serve for the admission of liquid into the hydraulic circuit. The area of the cross section of the hydraulic circuit measured between the periphery of the part 52 and the part closest to the axis of rotation of the elements 10 and 11 of the guide core corresponds to the area of the section at this location in a coupling of ordinary shape, the outline of which is indicated at 54 in dotted lines. In a variant of this device, the annular vacuum pocket could be eliminated; the annular part 52 could then engage slightly in the hydraulic circuit, producing a slight local reduction in the section.

   In the types of couplings in Figures 1 to 6, which have just been described, the solutions of continuity of the smooth walls of the hydraulic circuit had a fixed value, con-

   trairement to the variants which will be described below, where means have been provided for causing the discontinuity in the smooth wall as required.

   In the device shown in Figures 7 and 8, the fixed sleeve 34a for supplying liquid surrounds the shaft mo. tor 1, the liquid being admitted through the inlet valve 14, the annular passage 3Ia, an axial duct 32a and inlet ducts 12d formed in the motor element 3c. The hub 60 of the driven element 4c has a cylindrical annular part comprising a part 67 movable in the axial direction.

  This movable part is constituted by a shell 62 and fins 63 arranged opposite the fins 8a of the driven element. The central part of the motor element 3c is cut to form a space 61 allowing the part 67 to move axially. Several, for example three, elongated thread rods 64 are accommodated in the threaded bores in the part 67 and are held at 65 in the driven member. Relatively long blades 66 are keyed to the rods 64 and they are placed in the space between the shell of the driven element 4c and the casing 5b.

   The operation of this coupling is as follows:
When the coupling operates with low slip, and therefore when the driven element 4c rotates at a relatively high speed, the centrifugal force caused by the rotation of this element raises the blades 66 and orients them radially as shown in the figure. Figure 8 in A, the passage of the liquid through the driven element therefore has smooth surfaces. When the amount of liquid in the working chamber is decreased and the slip is greater, the liquid flowing in the chamber 5b meets the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 blades 66 and rotates them and the rods 64 in the position indicated in B.

   The rotation of the threaded rods 64 moves the part 6? axially and engages the space 61 cut in the driving element 3c, so that the shell, 62 protrudes into the passages of the driven element and thus produces a solution of continuity of the contour of this element.

   In the device of FIGS. 9 and 10, the solution of continuity is achieved using blades 90 each of which is supported by two rods which can slide in rings 92 integral with the guide core 11b, the arrangement being such that they can s 'engage in the active circuit, or they can be completely withdrawn therefrom and then be housed in a recess 96 which presents the part furthest from the axis of the driven element .4e. The rods 91 are pushed back towards the axis of rotation of the coupling by means of springs 93 compressed between the outer part of the guide core 11b and the washers 94 held by pins 95 on the rods 91.

   In this arrangement, when the sliding is important and the speed of the driven element is low, the action of the spring 93 outweighs that of the centrifugal force due to the rotation of this element and the blades 90 are forced to partially engage the ends of the liquid passage of the driven element. As the slip decreases with the increase in the amount of liquid in the working chamber, the centrifugal force overcomes the pressure of the springs and the leaves 90 are pushed back into the recess 96, clearing the passage of the liquid flowing between it. motor element and driven element.

 at least partial of the curved boundary walls of the hydraulic motor circuit, it could be produced only and without departing from the limits of the invention by the discontinuity of the surface of the blades.

   The invention can of course be applied to hydraulic devices, that is to say to hydro-kinetic transmission devices where the hydraulic circuit comprises a fixed reaction part and which varies the torque as in the case of? a motor and a driven shaft.
