<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
1 Le courant I traverse le conducteur bi-métal- lique E1 E qu'il échauffe, par effet Joule (fig. 4);
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
la constante de température (fig. 5);
Ce conducteur peut être en métal à coefficient de température pratiquement nul (constantan) ou en métal à coef- ficient de température plus ou moins élevé, ce qui a pour ef- fet de modifier la loi de déviation;

Maximum consumption indicator device
The device forming the subject of the present invention is used to indicate the maximum average value of the current consumed in an installation.
Devices of this type have already been constructed to produce bi-metallic conductors, the deformation of which, under the influence of a temperature difference produced by the current, measures the intensity of this current.
The apparatus forming the subject of the present invention uses a device of the Berne type in which the bi-metallic conductor is wound either in a spiral (fig.l) @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
either in a helix (FIG. 2), one of its ends E being fixed and the other E 'being able to deviate; in this way, it is possible to give this conductor a very great length and, consequently, to obtain a large deviation for a small variation in temperature while keeping the space requirement within low limits. In addition, this arrangement is entirely favorable for an indicator because the free end can be fixed to the axis and it is the rotation of this axis which measures the deformation.
To measure the maximum values of these deviations, a finger D is fixed on this axis and drives a needle A which can rotate with gentle friction around its axis.
To prevent variations in the ambient temperature from having an influence on the readings of the device (fig. 3), the bi-metallic conductor has, as mentioned above, a free end E 'which leads to the indicator needle, but its other end E is fixed to the free end El of a second bi-metallic conductor, the other end of which E2 is fixed and which is itself subjected only to the action of ambient temperature and arranged in such a way that, under this influence, its deformation exactly compensates for that of the first conductor.
In these devices, it is requested that the indication not be instantaneous, but that, on the contrary, it only reaches its final value after a certain time (5, 10, 15 minutes); if the intensity varies during this time, the device indicates an average value.
To achieve this result, various means are employed:
1 The current I crosses the bimetallic conductor E1 E which it heats up by the Joule effect (fig. 4);
2 The bi-metallic conductor El E traversed by the current I is placed in an envelope M which increases
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the temperature constant (fig. 5);
3 The bi-metallic conductor EE1 is not passed through by the current to be measured, but is heated indirectly by a heating conductor C (fig. 6).
This conductor can be made of metal with a practically zero temperature coefficient (constantan) or of metal with a more or less high temperature coefficient, which has the effect of modifying the law of deviation;
4 The bimetallic conductor EE1 being heated indirectly, we can interpose between it and the heating body C an envelope N of more or less high thermal capacity to modify the time constant (fig. 7).
In order to compensate for the small differences which may appear in the manufacture and to obtain an adjustment of the deflection, it has been proposed, for example, to bypass the heating winding. The following device, included in the present invention, is preferably employed.
In these devices, the idle indicator needle on its axis 0 'around which it can rotate with gentle friction is driven by a finger fixed on the axis 0 of the bi-metallic conductor - this finger being fixed in a manner permanent, to obtain a certain adjustment, the axis 0 'is placed at a certain distance from the axis 0 and, by means of a tongue L which can slide along the rod OM, the point of drive P.
In this way, when the rod OL deflects by an angle% the needle O'A makes a different angle, varying with the position of the point P.
It is also possible to vary the graduation of the scale by giving the indicator needle of maximum A a certain inclination with respect to the finger D which thus attacks @
