###P3cTLoH1m11*T8 ALX FILIERES EN ALLIAGES D ET A LEURS PROCEDES DE F6.FiRJ- -C6TI OIV. -
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

### P3cTLoH1m11 * T8 ALX ALLOY LINES D AND THEIR PROCESSES OF F6.FiRJ- -C6TI OIV. -
The present invention relates to dies for wire drawing and to their method of manufacture from pulverulent materials.
@
A wire drawing die usually has a central portion or "core", supported by a relatively heavy device which grips the core and which is referred to as the mount or the die holder. Heretofore, if the core has been fashioned with cemented tungsten carbide, or the like, it has been shaped outwardly by compressing a slow powder mixture of a refractory carbide and a metal binder. For example, 94% tungsten carbide and 6% cobalt were used, the mixture of which was molded in a steel matrix, under a pressure of 3 to 5 tonnes per.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
square centimeter.
The outer profile was chosen to be slightly conical, so as to allow easy demolding of the knot. The mass was then sintered at a temperature of about 900 ° C. for half an hour, which gave the core sufficient mechanical strength to allow handling. A hole was then drilled along the axis of the core using a steel drill: but the extreme hardness of the carbide leads to very rapid wear of the cutting edges of the drill, even when working on sintered products at such a temperature. as low as 900 C. As a result, frequent resharpening was essential.
After the forging, the core was sintered a second time in hydrogen, for an hour and a half at 1400 C .; it thus acquired all its hardness and was ready for assembly in the die holder. This comprises an axial orifice, of diameter slightly greater than the outside diameter of the core, but one of the bases of this opening is partially closed by a shoulder which prevents the core from leaving its housing. The core was therefore introduced into contact with this shoulder, and the core was surrounded with a sufficient quantity of copper to approximately fill the void between the frame and the core; the assembly was finally carried out in a hydrogen furnace, by copper brazing at around 1,100 C. The die, after cooling, still had to be placed alongside in a stone stoning machine.
Thanks to a mixture of abrasive materials and oil and the use of finishing tools with suitable angles, the axial opening of the core was gradually enlarged until the profile suitable for drawing was achieved.
This description shows how long the process of fabricating dies from hard carbides takes. In addition, this work requires experienced and particularly skilled operators, so as to achieve the dimensions and profile very exactly, with the extreme precision which is required. Often one must use several finishing tools to profile a single die, these tools generally being of relatively soft material such as steel.
According to the invention, the inexpensive manufacturing process makes it possible to obtain dies from pulverulent materials such as a refractory carbide and a metal binder. in order to understand the following description, reference should be made to the accompanying drawings, given here by way of non-limiting example.

Fig.l shows a view in section and partial elevation of an apparatus which allows the invention to be carried out.
Fig.2 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of the mold shown schematically in Fig.l.
Fig. 3 is a section through a die made in accordance with the present invention.
Fig.4 is a sectional variant of the apparatus shown in Fig.2.
FIG. 5 is a perspective view, with partial section, of a modification to the apparatus which can be used to produce the dies according to the invention.
Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 are longitudinal stubs of a part of the carbon mold, at the various stages of making a die and its mount, both from suitable powders.
In Fig.l, there is shown at 10 and 11 a pair of graphite blocks capable of being juxtaposed along a flat face, reserving a cylindrical longitudinal passage, of circular section, each half of which has been notched in one of these blocks.
This cylindrical opening makes it possible to insert the mold, shown diagrammatically at 12. The latter (Fig.2) comprises a hollow cylindrical die holder 13 made of metal, and a graphita tube 14, the inside and outside diameters of which are respectively equal to the corresponding diameters of the die holder 13.
A graphite piston or plunger 15 closes the lower opening of the die holder 13. This piston 15 is provided with a needle 16, cut towards its lower part so as to reproduce the exact porfile of the opening to be made in the core. The needle 16 further comprises a cylindrical region, long enough to pass right through the die holder, and a wider base, @ fairly short cylindrical portion, 17, approximately the same diameter as the inside diameter of the holder. - branch 13.
Fig. 2 shows the assembly of the core, the die holder 13, the graphite cylinder 14 and the plunger 15, ready for molding a core, the powdery material to be compressed, 18, for example tungsten carbide and cobalt mixed in desired proportions is then introduced into the mold.
A second graphite plunger 19, is arranged in the cylinder 14, so as to make it possible to compress the powder 18. It has an axial opening where
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
smoothes the cylindrical part of needle 16 during compression. This assembly is then placed between the carbon blocks 10 and 11, as shown (Fig.l). The whole is then heated by an electric current brought by the terminals 20 and 21 each connected to a pole of a suitable source of current The intensity must be sufficient to bring the powder 18 to its sintering temperature, that is to say in general, at above 1.000 C. The apparatus described does not make it possible to directly determine the temperature of the material. We can get an idea by measuring the temperature of the frame 13.
To this end, each of the blocks 10 and 11 carries a semi-circular window 22, the juxtaposition of which constitutes a circular orifice which makes it possible to directly determine the temperature of the die holder, by sighting with an optical pyrometer. At the same time as the powder is heated, pressure is applied to it through the graphita plunger 19: the powder material 18 then becomes a dense mass, practically free of pores. The pressure and the temperature need only be maintained for a few minutes, which is also sufficient to energetically weld the core onto the frame 13. Once the sintering is complete, the mold is removed; the die only requires a slight operation. polishing to be ready for use.
It is particularly necessary, in such a die, for the core to have neither visible pores nor empty spaces. Although the graphite piston 19 is sufficient for this, by compressing the powder mixture while it is brought to its sintering temperature, it can happen that this piston becomes too weak. This is the case if one wishes to obtain an extremely dense product requiring higher pressures.8 $ qi
We can then take a plunger 17 in any hard and refractory material: molybdenum, tungsten, quartz, alumina, magnesia, etc. In the case of a metal plunger, it is necessary to prevent the latter from being welded to the material. refractory.
This is accomplished by interposing a disc of very fine-grained carborandun paper between the powder material and the piston.
Preferably, one starts by applying a low pressure to the pulverulent material, in order to prevent the rupture of the graphite cylinder 14. However, as soon as the needle 16 has entered the channel of the plunger 19, the cylinder 14 does not. serves more than to guide the plunger 19: one can then increase the pressure on the heated material, since the force which tends to break the mold @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
is then applied directly to the metal of the frame 13.
Once the die has been used for some time, and the core shows some wear, the core can be restored to its original dimensions by placing it between the graphite pistons 15 and 19, then inserting the core. core 1'assembling between blocks 10 and 11, and applying pressure / by means of plunger 19, while the core is heated to a temperature above 1000 C ..
The description above refers to a mixture of tungsten carbide and cobalt, but it can be made with any other material: refractory carburises (those of molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, etc.), mixtures of carbides, relatively fusible metals (nickel, iron) or alloys of these metals with others such as molybdenum, tyngsten, chromium, aluminum, etc ...
For marl, the above description relates to a die with a circular opening, but any different shape is easily achievable according to the invention. For example, it has been possible to make cores with square or hexagonal apertures, etc. In all cases, it suffices to use a graphite or quartz needle cut so as to achieve the profile qu 'we want to give to the nucleus.
The graphite needle 15 (Fig. 2) is made in one piece However, it is advantageous in some cases, for example when the core opening is very small (1.5nm. Or less) to use a needle made of hard material, quartz for example. This is the device of Fig.4; a quartz rod 9 crosses with hard friction the graphite plunger 15.
The die holder 13, preferably made of molybdenum or an alloy of this metal, can be prepared in any suitable manner, for example from a sintered bar. Such a bar can be made cylindrical by hammering, and cut into sections of appropriate thickness. Each section is then pierced in a ring, as can be seen at 13 in FIGS. 2 and 3. Preferably, a frame made from pulverulent molybdenum or a mixture of powdered molybdenum with another metal will be used. In this case, it is convenient to perform the preparation in the apparatus shown in Figs. 6, 7,8 and 9.
Fig. 5 shows the parts in graphi @ e 24 which give the opposite contacts on the mold and whose semi-circular notches constitute, ¯n
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
as a whole, a cylindrical opening in which the graphite pistons 25 and 26 can slide. In FIGS. 6 to 9 these jaws are shown in section, and only over a small part of their totality.
To manufacture the frame 13 from powdered materials, the plunger 26 is first penetrated into a graphite mold, then the graphite rod 27 is inserted into the opening of the plunger 26, so as to form a seal (Fig. .6 and 7. A sufficient quantity of powdered metal 28 is then placed, which will constitute the die holder, and this powder surrounds the rod 27. The plunger 25 then slides, by sliding on the rod 27, comes to the fore. in contact with the pulverulent material 28, and makes it possible to apply the pressure @ at the same time as on the opposing piston 26, for example by means of the removable macaroons 29 and 30 (FIG. 5).
During compression, the heating current is passed through terminals or parts 31 and 32, and the powdery material is sintered.
Once this result has been obtained (Fig. 7), the assembly of the plungers 25 and 26 and of the rod 27 is removed from the mold 24, then the frame 28 is guided and supported by means of the plunger 26, along the axis of which the needle 33 is introduced, similar to the part 15 of Fig.2. This needle is profiled along 34, exactly like part 16 of Fig.2. This profile was executed so as to achieve the desired one on the core to be molded. The hard powder to be sintered 35 is then poured in a suitable quantity: the upper plunger 36 provided with a longitudinal channel is inserted, in which the end of the needle 34 slides and the compression and heating are carried out exactly as it was. been said above. The pressure and the temperature are adjusted so as to achieve the conditions necessary for sintering.
Current flow is provided by terminals 31 and 32.
When the frame is sintered, the operation is quick, efficient and economical, but it has the additional advantage that the die holder can have practically the same coefficient of expansion as the core, thanks to the choice of metal powders of which it is made. For example, a molybdenum and tungsten watch can be employed with a core containing 37% tungsten carbide and 13% cobalt, or 94% tungsten carbide and 6% cobalt.
The expansion coefficients relating to these last two compositions are respectively a little higher and a little lower than that of molybdenum. /
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
If a suitable quantity of powdered tungsten, which is less expandable than molybdenum, is added to these metals, the coefficient of expansion can be adjusted to any desired value between these extremes. This is a great advantage, since there is thus no risk of rupture of the core at its zone of contact with the die holder, which sometimes happens when the expansion coefficients are quite different.
The dies manufactured according to this process therefore represent many advantages: they save time and manpower compared to the old manufacturing processes for the dies made of hard metal carbides. The profile of the core can be made very exactly to that required for the use of the die, so that there is hardly any work to be done to adjust to the final profile. The hole in the core is found exactly in the axis of the die and the core is integral with its mounting eliminating any brazing.
: Finally, the loyau no longer requires a special shoulder on the die holder, requiring special prior machining.
