Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

  "Heating body particularly usable for central heating installations" As heating bodies for central heating installations, as is known, almost exclusively finned heating bodies, called radiators, which are formed by one or more columns are used. directed vertically. They are made up of separate elements linked together by means of fittings.

   Such heating bodies only have a relatively small external surface emitting heat compared to their overall size. The expense for a determined heating surface of the heating body is also relatively large. Screw joints often lack tightness and significantly increase the price of the device.

   New experiments and observations have shown that a significantly larger external heat-emitting surface area is obtained with the same footprint.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 at less expense and without special connection means, by constituting, according to the invention, the heating bodies of one or more tubes wound in the form of a helix, several such heating bodies being able to be connected together, in parallel or in series to form a larger heating body.

   This idea has not heretofore been recognized and applied in heating technology. Above all, only the relatively expensive known radiators are found in existing devices, and it has not been noticed that for the same size it is possible to obtain a much greater calorific action and at lower costs by means of such heating bodies formed of tubes. The considerable difference can easily be established by calculation.

   If we take for example as a base a tube wound in the form of a helix of 30 m / m in external diameter, with 30 cm as the average diameter of the windings and 45 cm for the total height of the element, we obtain for this element an effective heating surface of 1.5 m2 in round numbers. A finned heating body of the same size, on the other hand, would have a much smaller heating surface and would be appreciably more expensive than the coiled tube, the manufacture of which is extremely simple and inexpensive. Similarly, there is currently no difficulty in manufacturing such heating bodies, in all the sizes used in practice, with a single tube without any connection by screwing or welding.

   The tube itself, after its manufacture can be immediately wound up to form a heating body, which makes the construction very simple and very inexpensive.

   It is also possible, in order to establish an even larger heating surface with the same size, by winding the tube several times around the same axis, so that several elements thus wound in a helix can be

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 introduced on the same axis one into the other, naturally at the necessary distance, and that the heat can consequently rise between these elements. The helix-shaped windings do not even have to be necessarily circular, they may possibly not be circular if the site conditions require it. Non-circular windings may for example be oval or rectangular, the latter of course with fairly rounded angles.

   We can further improve the efficiency of these heating bodies in large proportions, by arranging, as shown in the drawing, the various windings at a certain distance from each other, which should not be too great but not too much. small and calculated in such a way that the interior space exerts a sort of suction action like a chimney and draws inwards in the intervals between the windings, by its draft, the air which rises to the outside against said windings.

   The result is that the air to be heated is in contact with the entire surface of the various windings of the tubes and in this way absorbs more heat than if it simply rose vertically from the bottom to the top on both sides of the windings, as would happen. if the windings were in contact either totally or partially, or also if they were at too great a distance from each other, because a suction action of the internal air current could no longer take place.

   With the device of the invention it is therefore possible to achieve very significant technical and industrial progress in the technique of heating and a considerable saving in central heating installations compared with radiators hitherto in use, which can be cast or composed of stamped sheet metal parts.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The accompanying drawing shows by way of example one embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a front view of a heating body according to the invention.

   Figure 2 is a schematic view of the connection of several separate elements to form a larger group of heating elements, the different elements being connected in series with each other.

   Figure 3 is a view of a similar group with separate elements connected in parallel.

   Figure 4 is a plan view of a heater body with two windings on the same axis.

   Figure 5 is a plan view of a non-circular element.

   The parallel connection also provides particular advantages over radiators in that the various tubular elements can be placed in or out of the circuit, each for itself or together, depending on the degree of heat desired for the room to be heated. We know the drawback of radiators which consists in that it is not possible to put in or out of the circuit that the entire heating body. The restriction of the passage of the heating medium is relatively inefficient. The whole body is either cold or hot The adjustment of the intermediate degrees almost always encounters difficulties during the operation because one cannot always act on the circulation to the desired extent.

   If, on the contrary, we can, as in the present case, put in or out of a group of several heating elements, each for himself at will, we have a much more perfect means of regulating the temperature of the room. One or more elements of a group can also be inserted, depending on the season, while with radia-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 We are obliged to always put the whole element in or out of the circuit.

   A whole series of reflections, observations and experiments have shown that it is advantageous and may even be necessary to constitute the tube coils forming the heating elements, so to speak, by means of an endless band of iron which is bent in the known manner in the form of a tube and which is welded along the longitudinal connection line electrically, or also, which has fewer advantages, with autogenous welding. It is possible, as already indicated, to carry out the winding of the coil immediately following the folding of the iron strip and its closing into a tube, which for a circular winding is carried out by winding around a circular core which rotates with a speed corresponding to the movement at the end of the finishing of the iron strip shaped into a tube.

   With other forms of winding, suitable devices are used. A tube coil thus constructed fulfills all the requirements which may be imposed on it if it is used as a heating element for central heating installations.

   Tubes can be made with a strip of iron with a weld along the longitudinal seam line, in lengths which are a multiple of the lengths of tubing heretofore in use. The usual tubes are about 6 to 8 meters long, while to obtain a heating surface large enough for a central heating heating body which is made up of a single coil, therefore not formed from assembled parts, it is necessary to have a multiple of this usual length.

   It should preferably be about 40 to 100 meters long, considering all other conditions.

  Such lengths can be obtained by fabricating the tube at

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 by means of an endless iron strip with solder along the longitudinal connecting line.

   In this way one overcomes all at once the difficulties which one would encounter in the composition of a coil of this length which is outside the usual limits, because the particular means used for the joint always present the danger of do not ensure a good seal.

   Likewise, the particular difficulty which hitherto complicated the bending of tubes for heating elements can be overcome quite easily, if an iron strip tube welded to the longitudinal connection line is used as the raw material. Technical considerations on heat require moreover to have small wall thicknesses (approximately 0.8 to 1.8 m / m). On the other hand, however, the wall thicknesses and diameters must be kept within a well established relationship so that the tube can be bent without difficulty, which must be done in this case, only by bending without filling the tube and even without a core.

   If we denote by D the outside diameter of the tube and by s the wall thickness, we can say that the bending of the tube is all the more difficult as the ratio D: s is greater, because the tube has tendency to flatten at the bending point and indeed more so as the diameter of said tube is greater relative to the wall thickness. It has been found that with thicknesses of 0.8 to 1.8 m / m the advantageous diameter for bending is between 18 to 40 m / m.

   These dimensions are those which are exactly suitable for the manufacture of tubes by means of iron strips and which at the same time nevertheless are advantageous from the point of view of the technique of heat and of all the construction.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 truction of the heating element. The diameter of the tube has an influence on the action of the heating, in that elements formed of a tube of relatively small diameter, with a large number of windings, and for a correct calculation of the space between the different windings, are more favorable than elements formed of a tube of larger diameter with a smaller number of windings. A tube of about 26 m / m in diameter should be made with an iron strip of about 80 m / m in width which has a thickness of about 1.2 m / m.

  Such an iron strip can be easily turned over a length of 40 meters and more into a tube which can also easily be wound into a coil with small distances between the different windings, so that it best meets the requirements of manufacturing, including bending, as well as under the conditions of heat engineering. This is all the more the case as the relatively small thickness of the iron strip and therefore of the tube wall seems to be advantageous for the heat transmission coefficient.

   Of great importance is finally the advantage of the low weight of a coil formed of an iron strip used as a heating element compared to the heating elements ordinarily used which, for a much greater weight have a lower efficiency at the point of thermal view.

  On this point the installation is also particularly facilitated, especially since the entire heating element is composed of a single-piece coil having no joint device.

   It will thus be noted that the fact of carrying out the winding immediately after the shaping of the tube by means of an endless iron band is indeed advantageous in certain cases from the point of view of manufacture, but that one

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 can also do otherwise, for example by first laying the tube 40 to 100 meters long and then rolling it in another phase of work.

   The drawing shows the embodiment described above in which, by means of an iron strip with dimensions of 80 x 1.2 m / m, a tube coil 40 meters in length is manufactured.

   Figure 6 shows the iron strip and Figure 7 the cross section of the tube made with this iron strip in the known manner with a weld along the longitudinal connection line.

   Figures 8 and 9 are an elevation and a plan of the heating element which in this example is formed by a vertical tube-coil a having in horizontal projection the shape of a rectangle the short sides of which are rounded. The tube-coil forms a vertical chimney with 10 m / m of free space between the various windings. The stability of this tube-coil is also great in itself, but it is reinforced by posts b, b. These posts can be formed, as in the drawing, by sheets folded in a U shape which surround the rollings of the tube by means of suitable notches and are arranged with their open sides facing each other.

   It would also also be possible, instead of a vertical tube-coil, to have a horizontal tube-coil, above all if, for example as in the embodiment of FIG. 8, the winding is executed mainly in the form of rectangle and if this rectangle is placed of control.

  The chimney action does not naturally occur with this embodiment.
