 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

  "IMPROVEMENTS IN THE MANUFACTURING OF CONCRETE AND APPARATUS FOR THIS MANUFACTURING"
The invention relates to a system for making concrete in which air entrained or contained in the agglomerated mass is removed or sucked therefrom while this mass is subjected to mixing, in the wet state only, in a mixing chamber. hermetically sealed, so as to produce a concrete with a very homogeneous and resistant structure, thanks to the absence of voids or

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 pores which usually exist in concrete mixed in the ordinary way.

   Hitherto, the apparatus employed has included the use of a tilting mixing chamber of the paddle type provided with a removable hermetic cover, or else of a non-tilting rotating mixing drum provided with a cover plate. airtight at one or both ends to close one or both openings.

   The present invention relates to an improved method of manufacturing concrete and an apparatus for making it.

   Accordingly, according to the present invention, the materials which make up the agglomerated mass undergo mixing in the interior of a tilting rotary drum provided with a removable hermetic cover forming the chamber from which the air, which is entrained or contained in. the wet mass of agglomerates is extracted or sucked during the kneading of this wet mass.

   In the apparatus for mixing concrete established in accordance with the invention, the rotating drum has only one loading and unloading opening and it is mounted in a frame so as to rotate about its own axis and to tilt. around a horizontal axis, to allow the loading of the materials into the drum at a certain tilting angle, the operation of mixing at another tilting angle and the unloading of the chipboard at a still different tilting angle.

   The mixing position of the drum is a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 intermediate position between the loading and unloading positions and there is provided, to close the opening of the drum, a movable door or a cover which is arranged and carried on the frame of the apparatus independently of the drum, so that when the door is open, - or the cover lifted, - it does not interfere with the angular movement of the drum from the loading position to that of unloading.

   Means are provided for opening and closing the door or the cover of the drum, so that it can be lowered to close the opening of the drum and seal it by its own weight when this drum is in the kneading position, thus forming a hermetically sealed chamber inside the drum. The door or the cover is provided with suitable devices and connections with the reservoir, cylinder or other suitable part of an air pump or other device for drawing air from the mixing chamber and creating a vacuum. necessary to carry out the deaeration operation.

   The door or the cover is supported by a suitable movable arm carried by the frame of the apparatus and it is mounted on this arm so as to be able to rotate freely with the drum, to fit into the opening of this drum and to adapt. to any irregularity that it may present.

   A valve system is also provided in the vacuum duct which opens into the drum, as well as closure members by means of which the valve closes the vacuum duct which opens to the outside, after the drum door has been closed.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 and establishes communication between this vacuum duct and the atmosphere, before the opening of the drum door.

   The drum door opening and closing member is controlled by the movement of an operating lever having a lost time which occurs during the initial movement of said lever and which makes it possible to stop the vacuum.

   In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a type of concrete mixer constructed in accordance with the invention.

   Fig. 2 is the side view.

   Fig. 3 is a detail view (on an enlarged scale) which shows the door closing member, the vacuum duct which leads to the drum and the valve mechanism therein.

   In these Figures, 2 denotes a frame mounted on wheels 3, and in which is installed a drum 4 carried by a vertical central shaft (not shown) mounted on a rocker under a cradle 5 and entering axially into the drum through its base, the cradle being suspended by a solid journal 6 and a hollow journal 7 housed respectively in bearings 8 and 9 fixed to the frame 2. The oscillation of the cradle 5 around its journals is produced by means of a toothed sector 10 with which meshes a pinion 12 controlled by a flywheel 13 mounted on the pin 14 of the pinion 12, this pin being housed in a bearing 15 fixed to the frame 2, and the toothed sector 10 being fixed to the journal 6 of the cradle 5.

   In the hollow journal 7 is rotatably mounted an axis 16 controlled by a toothed wheel

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   right 17 mounted on him; pinion 18, Fig.l, is keyed on the inner end of this axis and meshes with a circular shaped rack 19 mounted on the drum 4, so that when the axis 16 is rotated by the toothed wheel 17 , the drum rotates around its axis. The toothed wheel 17 is actuated by a chain 20 passing over the toothed wheel 21 of a motor assembly 22 suitably mounted in the frame 2.

   It can therefore be seen that the drum 4 can be tilted by actuating the handwheel 13 while it is rotating, arrangements being made so that the drum can be retained at three different tilting angles, one of which gives the filling position. , the second, the mixing position, and the third the unloading position.

   On the outer end of the axle 16 is mounted another spur gear 23 which transmits motion to an upper shaft 24 via a spur gear 25 and a friction clutch 26 mounted on it. him. The shaft 24 carries two control drums 27 serving to raise and lower a filling hopper 28 by means of metal cables 29 which pass over pulleys 30 shown more clearly in FIG. 1. The hopper 28 is carried by oscillating arms 31, FIG. 1, mounted on a shaft 32 suitably mounted itself on the frame 2.

   The drum 4 is provided with a removable cover or door 33 suspended by means of an arm 34 and a yoke 35 from a shaft 36 around which the arm can oscillate, the door 33 remaining, by the action of its own weight, hermetically applied to the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 opening of the drum 4 when it is in its closed position, and being supported in the open position by a crank arm 37 which, when the door is closed, is kept away from the arm 34, so that the door can s 'apply to the opening of the drum, as mentioned above.

   This crank arm 37 is fixed to the shaft 36 and its movement is controlled by the operation of a hand lever 38, mounted on one end of this shaft, this movement of the crank shaft comprising a time lost, after the door has closed on the drum allowing it to disengage from its contact with the arm 34, taken again when it is lifted by the operating lever until it comes into contact with arm 34.

   The door 33 is mounted on the arm 34 via a hollow shaft 39 which rotates in a ball bearing 40 mounted in a bearing 41 of the arm 34, so that the door can rotate with the drum, and the bearing 41 is resiliently mounted on the arm 34 by means of springs 42, so that the door can fit into the opening of the drum and follow any irregularities therein. A gasket 43, made of rubber or the like, is disposed on the door for the purpose of making a hermetic seal.

   A vacuum duct 44 connected to a pump 45 communicates with the hollow axis 39 of the door 33 of the tamoour, this hollow axis communicating directly through the door with the interior of the drum, which makes it possible to create a vacuum in the drum 4 by the action of the pump 45 controlled by means of a pulley or a spur gear 46, mounted on the motor assembly 22, and on which passes a chain 47 or the e-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 equivalent.

   The vacuum duct is provided with a filter device 49, while the hollow shaft 39 of the door 33 is also provided with a filter 50.

   In the vacuum pipe is mounted a valve box 51 in which is formed a valve chamber 52 containing a valve 53 which controls the vacuum ports 54,55 and a port 56 for the outside air. This valve 53 is actuated by a rod 57 which slides in upper 58 and lower 59 bearing surfaces. This rod is connected by its outer end to a valve control lever 60, fixed on the shaft 36, this lever being able to be actuated by the operation of the hand lever 38.

   A water tank 61 is installed above the apparatus; it is provided with a pipe 62 through which water is brought over the materials as they fall from hopper 28 into drum 4.

   The operating lever 38 carries a spring ratchet 63 which engages a fixed toothed rack 64, so that this lever can be retained in position.

   The friction clutch 26 mounted on the shaft 24 is actuated by an articulated lever 65 which can be controlled by means of a sector 66 fixed on a shaft 67 actuated by the operation of a hand lever 68.

   On the end of the shaft 24 is mounted a ratchet wheel 69 with which a hand-operated pawl 70 engages to hold the hopper 28 in its position.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 lifting position when necessary.

   The hopper 28 is provided with a chute 71, integrally fitted with it, intended to direct the materials into the drum.

   The connection 72 between the duct 44 and the hollow shaft 39 \ The door 33 of the drum is established by a flexible member.

   The operating mode of the apparatus is as follows: by activating the handwheel 13 so as to tilt the rotary drum 4 and make it assume the filling position indicated by the line in mixed lines x in FIG. 1, the hopper which contains the materials being raised to the position indicated by the phantom line v, in FIG. 1, to discharge its contents into the drum, with water also being mixed with the materials. The rotary drum 4 is then tilted to make it assume the mixing position in which it is shown in solid lines, then the lever 38 is operated to lower the door or the cover 33 in order to hermetically close the opening of the drum.

   The initial movement of this operating lever allows the door to descend on the opening of the drum, and at the same time actuates the valve 53 by means of the lever 60 mounted on the shaft 36, the prolonged movement of the operating lever continues to actuating the valve which then closes the atmosphere communication lumen 56 of the valve chamber 52 mounted in the vacuum duct 44 after the door 53 has sealed the drum, thereby allowing the suction of the vacuum. air from the drum by pump 45, in order to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 create a vacuum while the mixing is carried out.

   Once the mixing is complete, it is naturally necessary to put an end to the vacuum state in the rotating drum 4, before raising the door or cover 33, which is done automatically by actuating the operating lever 38. for the opening of the door: the first movement of this lever causing the opening by the valve 53 housed in the valve chamber 52 of the vacuum duct 44 to make it communicate with the outside air through the light
56 and stop the vacuum, the prolonged movement of the operating lever bringing the crank arm 37 into contact with the support arm 34 of the door or the cover 33 to lift it and force it to raise the latter so that it clears the opening of the rotating drum.

   The rotating drum is then tilted
4 to make it take the unloading position indicated by the dot-dash line z, Fig. 1, to unload its container, with a view to its use, while the drum is still rotating, so that it is thus completely emptied.
