Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   EXEMPLE 1 ----------

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Improvements in the manufacture of articles of rubber or the like.

   The present invention relates to improvements made to the manufacture of articles made of rubber or similar materials by one or more operations such as casting, spreading, impregnation, dipping or spraying, from aqueous emulsions or dispersions. of the kind specified below.

   The object of the present invention is to produce by one or more of these operations porous or micro-porous articles of vulcanized rubber or the like, more especially battery separators or filter cones.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The method of manufacturing porous or microporous articles of vulcanized rubber or the like, according to the invention, comprises the wet vulcanization of emulsions or aqueous dispersions of the kind described hereinafter at low. ammonia content, preferably containing sulfur in an amount of 20 to 60% of the amount of rubber and free of electrolytes which can cause these aqueous emulsions or dispersions to freeze cold or hot, after which the water contained in the products obtained in this way is evaporated.

   It is generally advantageous that the ammonia content does not exceed 0.1%.

   The low ammonia content of the rubber latex can be obtained by one of the known operations, preferably not causing substantial dilution of the latex, for example aeration or the addition of formaldehyde.

   The aqueous emulsions or dispersions to be employed preferably contain a relatively small proportion of zinc oxide, for example of the order of 2% of the amount of rubber, and accelerators can optionally be employed for the vulcanization.

   The emulsions or dispersions to be employed are those of rubber, gutta-percha, balata or other similar vegetable resins, natural or artificial, or those containing these materials.

   Man-made aqueous dispersions include those obtained from coagulated, vulcanized or synthetic rubber, waste rubber or reclaimed rubber. Each of these dispersions can be used alone or in admixture with one or more, at will.

   All these dispersions can contain the usual known compositional ingredients and / or can be in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 concentrated form.

   It is also possible to use concentrates as described in Belgian patents 346188 & English 219633 to which one or more of the usual composition ingredients are optionally added.

   It has been found that the best results are obtained when the total solids concentration of these dispersions exceeds 60%. The porosity depends largely on the concentration of the aqueous dispersions employed and it follows that the process according to the present invention is especially effective for the manufacture of microporous articles of low porosity.

   The present invention has been found to be especially useful in conjunction with the methods described and claimed by Belgian Patent No. 393.027.

   The following examples show how the process is carried out to obtain microporous ebonite.

   EXAMPLE 1 ----------
A mixture is prepared having the following composition:
Rubber 100 parts by weight
Sulfur 40 It "" by adding to a latex, containing 63% of solids, prepared by centrifugation and the ammonia content of which is reduced to 0.08% by aeration, a dispersion of 50% sulfur, the sulfur of which is at l finely divided and dispersed state by
1.5% gelatin and a small amount of ammonia. The final ammonia content of the mixture is 0.1%,
This mixture is poured directly into a mold of the kind described and claimed by British Patent 349,062, and which has been treated with zinc stearate. The set is

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 then immersed in water and subjected to the following fractional vulcanization operation.

   The temperature is raised to 160 ° C. in 15 minutes and maintained for 20 minutes. Then it is brought back to room temperature in 10 minutes. The temperature is again raised to 160 ° C. in 15 minutes and maintained as such for 95 minutes. Then it is allowed to drop to room temperature over 10 minutes.

   EXAMPLE 2.

   -----------
A mixture having the composition below:
Rubber 100 parts by weight
Sulfur 40 parts by weight is modified by the addition of 2% zinc oxide in the form of a dispersion of 50% glue and 0.5% acacia gum.

   The latex is aerated to reduce the ammonia content to 0.1%, and the procedure is then carried out according to the procedure described by Example 1.
