<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"IMPROVEMENTS IN OSCILLATING BELL COUNTERS"
By patent N 376. 750 of January 20, 1931, the applicant disclosed certain improvements to gas meters with four oscillating bells. These improvements were mainly characterized in that the bells formed two oscillating systems, of two oloches each, having the same geometric axis of oscillation and whose movements were oinematically conjugated and out of phase, so
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
that there was no neutral point, by means of a linkage mechanism which simultaneously actuates the clockwork movement and the distribution system, this mechanism being placed at the bottom of the counter and submerged in the liquid where the bells move.
The object of the present invention is a new improvement, brought to this principle arrangement, in order to simplify the meter and to obtain a greater measurement capacity for equal enumbrement, or to reduce the size for the same capacity. Said improvement consists, in principle, in replacing the two mobile units with two bells by mobile units with a single bell, balanced by a counterweight, which gives the advantages indicated. However, this principle provision gives rise to a technical problem of which the invention is a solution.
In the prior patent, each bell is in permanent communication with the space surrounding the other bell of the same crew, and the distribution device controls communication orifices between these spaces surrounding the bells and, on the one hand, the 'envelope containing the inlet gas, on the other hand, the outlet duct. In the arrangement according to the present invention, it is no longer possible to use such an arrangement, since the bells of two crews do not move in phase. It was therefore necessary to provide, for the bell of each crew, a special duct leading to the distributor relating to this crew.
The counter according to the invention is therefore characterized by two oscillating units, each composed of a bell and a counterweight, having the same geometric axis of oscillation and whose movements are combined, but shifted in phase, using 'a linkage mechanism which simultaneously activates the horloeris movement and the distribution system; this meoanism is placed at the bottom of the meter, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the bell of each crew is connected, by a duct, to a special orifice of the distributor glass relative to this crew, glass where on the other hand the outlet duct opens and a connection orifice to the casing where the said bell.
In the prior patent, the orifices of the same distributor ended respectively (apart from the outlet duct) in the two envelopes in which the bells of the same crew moved.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example only, one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation.
Figure 2 is a sectional profile along line 11-11 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional profile along line III-III of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional profile along line IV-IV of Figure 1.
The gas arrives through the inlet duct 1 and spreads into the space formed by the outer casing 2 and the tank 3 which plunges through its base into the liquid 4. This liquid is introduced into the meter by the conduit 5 and leveled by the usual means.
The cap 3 is internally divided by two partitions 6a and 6b so as to form a central compartment 60 in relation to the outlet duct. In each of the two side compartments 7 and 8, a measuring bell moves, balanced by a counterweight * Bell 9, which moves in space 7, is balanced by counterweight 10, and bell 11, which is moves in the space 8, is balanced by the counterweight 12. There are thus formed two mobile units, which oscillate on the single shaft 13. The flails 14 and 15, which respectively join the bell 9 to the con-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The weight 10, and the bell 11 on the counterweight 12, are curved centrally to pass under the lower edge of the partitions 6a and 6b.
At the base of the meter are formed two juxtaposed but independent chambers 16 and 17. The chamber 16 is connected (Figure 3) by a tube 18 to the internal space of the bell 11, and the chamber 17, (Figure 4) by a tube 19, to the internal space of the bell 9. In addition, a duct 20 (FIG. 3) connects the chamber 16 to the orifice 21 of a distribution glass placed at the upper part of the cap 3, while a duct 22 (Figure 4) connects the chamber 17 to the orifice 23.
The orifice 2i is controlled by a slide 24, at the same time as the orifice 25, which opens into the space 8; the orifice 23 is controlled by a second slide 26, at the same time as the orifice 27 which opens into the space 7. The drawers 24 and 26 are actuated respectively by levers 28 and 29, mounted to oscillate on the shaft 13, and receiving their movement from a crankshaft 30, placed at the lower part and bathed in the liquid. This shaft is moved by the mobile crews by means of the connecting rods # 1 and 32, as well as the cranks 33 and 34, and it actuates the clockwork movement, for example by means of the screw 35, the tangent wheel 36 and vertical shaft 37.
The cranks 33 and 34 are wedged in such a way, on the shaft 30, with respect to the articulations 39 and 40 of the connecting rods 31 and 32 on the flails 14 and 15, that the movements of the two mobile units are phase-shifted. so that there is no dead point. The crankpins actuating the levers 28 and 29 naturally receive the wedging required to impart to each distributor the movement corresponding to the mobile unit with which this distributor is associated.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
This is how the distributor 26 controls the movement of the crew 9 - 14 - 10, and the distributor 24 controls the movement of the crew 11 - 15 - 12,
The operation is as follows:
In the position represented by FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, the equipment 11 - 15 - 12 oscillates in the direction of the hands of a watch. In fact, the inlet gas enters through the orifice 25 into the space 8, while the interior of the bell 11 is connected, by the duct 18, the chamber 16, the duct 20, the orifice 21 and the distributor 24 to the outlet duct 38. The pressure in the space 8 therefore forces the crew 11 - 15 12 to oscillate as indicated.
At the same time, the crew 9 - 14 - 10 is at the end of the race (figure 4). The orifices 27 and 23 are closed by the distributor 26. But the abre 30, driven in rotation by the crew 11 - 15 - 12 will force, by the crank 33 and the connecting rod 31, the crew 9 - 14 - 10 to oscillate counterclockwise. In addition, shortly after the start of this movement, the distributor 26, which moves to the right, will discover the orifice 27 to put the space 7 in relation to the gas inlet, and the orifice 23 to put it in relation to the output. Consequently, the gas contained in the bell 9 will be able to escape through the pipe 19, the chamber 17, the pipe 22, the orifice 23 and the space 60 towards the outlet pipe 38. The first motor oourse of crew 9 - 14 - 10 started.
The equipment 11 - 15 - 12 continues its oscillating movement in the direction of clockwise, starting from the position of FIG. 3. It can be seen that the distributor 24, gradually brought back to the right, closes little by little the orifices 21 and 25 to close them completely when the crew 11 - 15 - 12 will be at bottom dead center, just like the distributor 26 in the position of figure 4
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
(top dead center of the crew 9 - 14 - 10) closes the holes which correspond to it.
The bottom dead center of the crew 11 - 15 - 12 is crossed under the motive action of the crew 9 - 14 - 10, and the movement of the distributor 24 continues to the right. It thus discovers the orifice 21 to put it in communication with the gas inlet, and the orifice 25 to connect it to the space 60 and to the gas outlet. The gas then enters through line 20, chamber 16 and pipe 18 into the bell
11 which rises, the gas contained in space 8 escaping towards the outlet. The second driving race of crew 11 - 15 - 12 thus began, and it is understandable that the cyole is thus reproducing indefinitely.
