<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Contrairement à ce qui a été proposé jusqu'ici, il n'est donc pas nécessaire de maintenir''les deux galets en contact permanent avec la came ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Explosion or internal combustion engine.
The transformation of the rotational movement of a shaft into rectilinear reciprocating motion by means of cams wedged on the shaft and acting on rollers carried at the end of the part to be set in reciprocating motion is well known. , and finds many applications for example in pumps and compressors. The theory teaches that an inverse transformation of motions, by the same intermediaries, is not admissible in practice. However, various systems of explosions or internal combustion engines have been proposed in which the diametrically opposed pistons act, by rollers terminating the piston rods, on cams wedged on the motor shaft; none of these engines could find practical applications.
Generally, in these engines, with diametrically opposed cylinders, the pistons of the opposed cylinders are interconnected, and their piston rods each carry a roller which rolls on the periphery of a cam wedged on the motor shaft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
To avoid the double cams generally necessary, a single type of cam has been proposed for two opposed pistons, the profile of this cam being such that, the line of centers of the two rollers passing through the axis of rotation, a movement has vi - sinusoidal weight of the pistons determines a constant speed rotation of the motor shaft.
In all the envisioned applications, with diametrically opposed cylinders, it was necessary to ensure permanent contact of the two rollers with the common cam, which necessarily limited the admissible profiles for the cam and in any case resulted in large cams (therefore increased bulk and, in general, the impossibility of transforming crankshaft engines without changing the crankcase) and, on the other hand, impossibility of obtaining, especially when starting, a powerful engine torque. All the cams offered to date, and designed to obtain two revolutions of the motor shaft per complete stroke (explosion, expansion, exhaust, suction and discharge) offer regular profiles, of which more than half (the 3 / 4 generally) is a portion of a circle.
In addition, when establishing these profiles, neither the engine torque, mainly at the start, nor the heating of the engine block, nor the loss of power during periods when the cam is driving by. compared to rollers, and it is certain that none of the solutions proposed to date has been able to find practical applications.
The present invention has been the subject of very numerous and long experiments, both on converted existing engines and on new specially constructed engines; these tests gave completely unexpected and unexpected results, particularly with old engines which, transformed (simplified) by application of the invention, operated, over thousands of kilometers, with efficiencies notably greater than those provided for these same new engines, and without any engine vibration.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The invention relates above all to in-line engines, each cylinder, or better still each piston, each working in isolation on a cam; it can, however, be applied to engines with opposed cylinders and star engines, each piston preferably remaining independent. It is essentially characterized by the fact that the driving roller, that is to say the roller which exerts on the cam the thrust due to the explosion, has its center offset with respect to the plane which, comprising the axis of rotation of the cam is parallel to the axis of the corresponding cylinder.
In other words, if we consider a piston moved along a vertical, the drive shaft being horizontal, the "drive" roller is located outside the vertical passing through the axis of rotation. This can be achieved, either by keeping the axis of the piston in the vertical passing through the axis of rotation, and moving, with respect to this vertical, the axis of the "motor" roller - or by raising the axis of the roller in the extension of the axis of the piston which is then offset parallel to the vertical passing through the axis of rotation of the cam-.
Preferably, the "driving" roller is combined with a guide roller, carried by a rigid part supporting the driving roller, and arranged so that the two rollers embrace the cam; this guide roller can also be offset, like the drive roller, but in the opposite direction. when using a cam without a raceway for the drive roller, the guide roller is always essential, except when the cylinders are twinned and opposed in pairs, in which case the drive roller of a piston serves as a guide roller for the piston. your opposite. This guide roller has several functions: firstly, ensure the exit of the piston for suction, and then, by its meeting with the cam, limit the exhaust and compression stroke, and prevent the piston, under the inertia force, does not strike the cylinder bottom.
Contrary to what has been proposed so far, it is therefore not necessary to maintain the two rollers in permanent contact with the cam;
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
it suffices that there is contact at the extreme points of the piston stroke. This allows the establishment of cam profiles much more interesting than those proposed to date, particularly where it is a question of modifying a vile $ 'shark engine, where the size is limited by the housing. existing.
The indicated offset of the drive roller makes it possible to obtain, even with a profile already proposed, a much more powerful drive torque when starting; it also makes it possible to establish profiles which, at the start of the downward movement of the piston, (expansion) allow rapid descent of the piston, therefore rapid expansion, which means increased efficiency and very low heating of the piston. engine block (Engines equipped according to the invention operated for several hours, at full speed, without any artificial cooling, and remained appreciably cold).
As has been said, the offset of the drive roller allows an infinity of profiles at good efficiency; it also makes it possible, for a determined stroke length, to considerably reduce the size due to the cams, and to avoid any harmful reactions, mainly when the cam acts on the rollers (for exhaust, suction and the compression).
As regards the reactions and the loss of power due to the action of the cam on the rollers, the invention provides, as an essential point, that the profile of the cam be such, for the part of its curve which acts on the rollers, that the point of contact between cam and roller is always on the right which, passing through the center of the roller, is parallel to the axis of the piston, or at most is on the line connecting the axis of the roller to the axis of rotation of the cam.
Contrary to what has been done up to now, the cam profile is determined, in addition to the conditions mentioned above, only taking into account the space requirements, the stroke length and the diameter. stationary of the motor shaft. By way of example, it will be described below
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
various cam and roller mounting layouts.
In the various cases, one considers the same course of the piston, and an offset of each roller equal to the radius of a roller (these being equal). In addition, the two verticals passing through the axis of rotation of the cam, and the axis of the drive roller are spaced from each other by a length equal to the radius of the drive shaft.
For design reasons, it has been assumed that each roller has a radius equal to that of the drive shaft, and the two rollers are considered to move vertically.
Fig. 1 schematically shows the assembly of a cylinder and the corresponding cam. 30 is the motor casing, in which the rectilinear motor shaft 31 is supported, the cylinders 32 are mounted in line on the casing; the piston-33 is connected, by weights, to a rigid arm 34, penetrating into the housing, and provided with an elongated window 35 in which the motor shaft 31 passes. This window has a width equal to the diameter of the shaft , and a length calculated according to the stroke of the piston. Preferably, the arm 34 is double, that is to say is formed of two identical, parallel arms, rigidly joined together and situated on either side of the book wedged on the shaft 31.
The double arm 34 carries the axes of rotation of the two rollers 37 and $ 3 rolling on the periphery of the cam.
The cam and the position of the two rollers are determined as will be indicated below.
Referring to Figure 2, we trace, with point 0 as the center, a circle with a radius equal for example to 7/8 of the stroke of the piston. We trace the vertical diameter and, at a distance equal to the radius of the motor shaft, we trace on either side of this diameter, two other verticals 1-2. On the left vertical 1, we take, outside of circle-1, a center such as a circle drawn from this center, with the radius of the driving roller, or tangent to circle 1. This circle 5 represents the ga - the engine in the position it occupies at the time of the explosion
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
or directly after it.
Point 6, at the intersection of the circle and the vertical diameter, representing '-le. point of greatest radius of the cam, the center of rotation 0 'of the cam is easily determined by bearing, on the vertical diameter, starting from the center 0 and below it, a distance equal to the half-radius of the circling reduced by 1/16 of the stroke, ie 3/8 of the stroke.
If we consider the part of the circle. 3. between point 6 and point 7 as forming part of the profile of the cam, it can be seen that, in the position shown of the driving roller, the explosion develops an action of the roller on the cam according to a force P starting from the point of tangency and directed along the line of centers 4-0. This force breaks down into a vertical force p and a horizontal force p1; each gives rise to a torque, each of which is equal to the product of the component considered by the length of the perpendicular lowered from the center of rotation 0 'on this component.
We immediately see that the forcep1 gives rise to a larger torque than that of the force p; these two couples are in opposite directions and consequently the cam will turn clockwise, which corresponds to a reaction control. The same will be true for all the points of the circle between 6. And 7, the engine torque gradually decreasing from 1 to 7; it will also be true, but with an increased motor torque, for all the points located inside the circumference, to the left of the vertical diameter, provided that the distance between the center o 'and the points considered decreases from the upper vertical half - diameter to lower vertical half - diameter.
The driving curve of the cam, that is to say the part on which the driving roller acts during the rebound, will therefore be a curve of decreasing radius, from point 6, and being able to go from the semi-circle 6- 7 to a straight line terminated by a portion of a circle concentric with the axis' (straight line 6-8).
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The center of the lower roller is stable as a sdie. from vertical 1, the circle 10 corresponding to the lowest position of the driving roller is drawn; with O 'as the center, we draw a circle of radius equal to the distance entered' and the point where the vertical 1 is intersected by this circle 10. We obtain on the vertical 2 the point 11 which is the point of tangency of the roller lower than the cam.
As has been said, the non-driving part of the cam must be such that, for all its points, the contact of this part with the driving roller, and with the lower roller is on the perpendiculars1 and 2 respectively. To determine this curve, we draw, from the center ', a circle 12 of radius 0'6; draw the radius 0'11 and divide the arc 6-13 into a number of equal parts, for example eight. We trace the rays passing through the points of division.
On one of the verticals 1 or
2 we trace eight centers corresponding to the positions of the center of the roller after each eighth of travel; we trace the circumferences representing the roller and, with 01 as the center, we draw on the various radii of the circle 12, the points corresponding to the cutting points of the said circumferences and of the vertical 1 or 2. We thus obtain the various points 14-15-16 to
20 which are points of the curve sought.
In Figure 2, there is shown the driving part of the cam formed by an arc of a circle 6-21 and a curve 21-11 drawn empirically, but with a decreasing radius from 21 to 11. With such a driving curve , there is no permanent contact of the two rollers with the cam; this simultaneous contact of the two rollers occurs at the end of travel, which is sufficient, since the lower roller acts only to prevent the piston from hitting the bottom of the cylinder during exhaust and compression. When the cam acts to induce suction, the upper roller may remain out of contact with the cam.

permanent rollers with the cam, the driving part of the latter is determined, in accordance with the invention, by extending the radii which gave points 11 and 14 to 20 '- *; -. on the vertical 1, we draw the arcs of a circle corresponding to the various positions of gaiety at every eighth of the stroke, and we join at the center 0 the various points occupied by the center of the roller on the vertical 1. These straight lines intersect the respective circles at points 23-24-25, etc. ; with O 'as the center, point 23 is transferred to 27, 24 to 28 and so on, which gives the dotted curve shown in fig. 2, which differs very little from that given in solid lines.
The course of the curve 6-11 of the cam was determined assuming a substantially constant speed for the piston, when the cam acts on one of the rollers. We could obviously, in the same way, determine a profile 6-11, meeting the essential condition indicated as regards the successive points of tangency, but which ensures, both for the lower roller (suction) and for the upper roller (exhaust and compression) at a variable speed during the whole stroke or during part of it.
The same could be done for the driving part of the cam, for example in order to allow, at the very beginning of the explosion, a high speed of descent of the piston (which is eminently favorable to the efficiency of the engine, and decreases the warming up of it
Fig. 3 gives by way of example a cam profile, determined exactly as in fig. 2, part in solid lines, with the only difference that the radius of the pitch circle is not equal to 7 / 8 of the piston stroke, but the entire stroke.
Under these conditions, the part 6-7 of the cam merges exactly with the semi-circle 3, while the non-driving part of the cam, determined as in fig. 2 by points 14-15. etc. and under the same conditions, cut circle 3. This cam profile ensures absolutely constant piston speed during expansion.

In FIG. 4, as a variant, an inverted arrangement of the rollers has been chosen, with respect to the axis of rotation of the cam, with an unequal offset of the rollers with respect to the center 0.
From this center O, we have drawn circle 3 with a radius equal to 7/8 of the stroke; to the right of this center, and at a distance equal to the half-radius of the motor shaft, we draw vertical 1, while vertical 2 is drawn to the left, at a distance equal to 3/2 radius of l 'engine shaft. The center of the motor shaft is determined as in fig 2, on the perpendicular if - killed halfway between 1 and 2. The center of the lower roller, for the highest position thereof, is determined as shown in fig. 2. which gives the position 9 'in dotted lines.
For a descent at a substantially constant speed of the piston, at the explosion, the curve 6-11 (straight part) is determined in the same way as explained previously (division of the arc of a circle 6-13 into eight equal parts, to obtain the points 40-41-42 ...) We see here that the position of the lower roller, for the upper position of gaiety, is no longer 9 ', but 9, corresponding to the tangency at 46 and not at 11 This point 11 constitutes the point of inflection for the connection to the left part of the cam, which, on its largest part, is the circle 3, except from 11 to 21. It can be seen that the direction of rotation is the opposite of that of FIG.
2 and that, moreover, the possibility of ignition advance is much greater than in fig. 2 and 3, in which the advance angle he can at most correspond to part 6 - In the example of figs. 2 and 3, if we suppose that the expiation takes place when the pieces occupy the positions shown, we see that at this moment the piston has already started to descend, while in fig.4 it has not yet reached the full compression stroke.
In figs. 2 and 3 (and in figs. 5 and 6) the engine therefore always works with ignition delay, always giving an engine torque to the explosion. This provision is
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
eminently favorable, because it radically avoids all vibrations due, in usual engines which must operate with advance, to the reaction between the force of inertia of the piston completing its compression stroke and the force of explosion directed in direction opposite.
Fig. 5 gives a variant of freeze 4, in which the center Q of circle 3 is to the right of the various centers both of the rollers and of 0 1. Here, the direction of movement is reversed, and the motor runs with a delay. , as in fig. 2 and 3.
The part of the cam serving to push the lower roller for suction is determined as before, under the same tangency conditions, while the other part is substantially identical to that of fig.4. The position of the lower roller corresponding to the upper position of roller 1 is here again offset with respect to the upper limit position 9 'of this lower roller.
Finally, fig. 6 gives an example of a cam determined to obtain at the start (at the explosion) a powerful engine torque, with a rapid descent of the piston at the start of the explosion. It is obvious that these conditions would be fulfilled at best by the cam 6-8 of FIG. 2, but this has the disadvantage of causing very noisy shocks, as a result of interruptions in contact between the rollers and the cam.
In fig. 6 we have determined the driving part of the cam so that, for the first rotation of 72 of the driving shaft, the upper roller (therefore the piston) makes 1/2 of its stroke, and the other half for a rotation of 108, The other part of the cam is established as in fig. 2. The profile of this cam has no circumference portion, and we see that at the start, the engine torque is extremely powerful. It will be understood that, while remaining within the limits indicated in fig. 2, as regards the driving part of the cam, it is possible to determine a whole series of profiles meeting various conditions,
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
either for cooling the motor or for the motor torque at various points in the expansion stroke, while maintaining a uniform speed at the motor shaft.
Likewise, the other part of the cam, which acts for the suction can, in combination with the driving part, and by satisfying substantially the conditions of tangency stated, be determined according to special considerations relating to the duration or the speed. suction.
CLAIMS.
1. Explosion or internal combustion engine, in which the pistons, in rectilinear reciprocating motion, drive the rectilinear motor shaft by means of rollers acting on cams wedged on this shaft, characterized in that the drive roller of each piston, that is to say the roller which, during the relaxation exerts the thrust on the corresponding cam to transform the rectilinear movement into a rotational movement, is displaced with respect to the axis of rotation of the cam in such a way that the center of the roller is outside the line which, passing through the axis of the shaft, is parallel to the axis of the piston.
