<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Fig. 13 représente un brûleur pour l'ébullition.
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Gasifier for apparatus for lighting, cooking or heating by gasification of liquid fuels.
The simplest gasifiers are those used in oil stoves and known for a long time. They comprise a system of tubes, generally curved, heated indirectly by the flame of the burner after priming carried out with the aid of a small quantity of alcohol which is poured into a suitably placed cup and which is ignites to initiate carbonation.
This kind of primitive gasifier was applied to petroleum or gasoline gas lamps as used in the Colonies. But the practical results have not been favorable, owing to the serious drawback of the rapid fouling of the curved or straight pipe (s), the diameter of which is necessarily very small. It happens that this fouling obstructs the passage and that it is very difficult to unblock these small straight tubes, while the bent tubes cannot in any case and are therefore definitely out of use.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
A significant improvement over single-tube gasifiers has been introduced for several years and it may seem at first glance that the practical results obtained should generalize their use. These gasifiers colport a heating tube of relatively large diameter, which makes the apparatus more solid from a mechanical point of view. However, since the quantity of liquid fuel residing in or passing through this tube must be strictly limited under penalty of thwarting the gasification,
it was necessary to reduce the active volume of this gasifier by inserting therein a sieve (represented for example by a roll of metallic gauze forming a porous cylindrical body of a certain thickness). This cylindrical filter is placed with light friction in the heating tube of the gasifier. Inside the filter, a central tube is introduced inside which can move longitudinally a rod provided with a needle for removing the voter. The lower end of this rod ends in a square section block fitted with a transverse groove which receives the drive lug of an eccentric.
When the elector (whose hole is about two tenths of a millimeter) is clogged with carbonaceous residues or impurities entrained by the liquid, the needle is made to act by maneuvering the eccentric which impresses the rod carrying - needle back and forth. The needle passes through the gas exit hole and the elector is again able to deliver gas in the normal way.
It often happens, that the liquid fuel, exposed to the. Intense heat from the burner flame or the incandescent sleeve of the lamp charcoal leaving carbon particles to adhere both to the inner wall of the heating tube, to the filter and even to the surface of the central tube. If these components are neglected to clean very often, the residues accumulate, clump together and finish in a short time by clogging the filter and sticking the aforementioned components (heating tube, filter and central tube).
Under these conditions, the central tube can no longer be removed, nor the filter, and the gasifier then becomes ineffective.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
usable and must be replaced. In the Colonies, these replacements are tedious, costly and time consuming.
Apart from these aforementioned drawbacks, it should be noted the multiplicity of parts constituting these gas4ifiers and the great fragility of most of the components that compose them. And, since lighting or heating devices are most often put in inexperienced hands, it is understandable that the reported disadvantages are greatly magnified.
The object of the present invention is a gasifier designed in such a way as to completely eliminate the drawbacks of the devices employed to date, firstly by avoiding dangerous fouling of fragile parts, secondly by reducing the number of constituent parts and by making these organs much more solid and therefore less subject to being distorted or destroyed by inexperienced or careless handling.
Opposite these massive and serious gasifiers, it is appropriate to place the so-called instant-ignition gasifiers, where priming with alcohol is eliminated and which are put into action by the simple heat of a flame of matches. As interesting as such an advantage may seem (theoretically), it is nonetheless a given that to obtain this result the metal mass of the gasifier must be extremely low. Now, whether it is a question of gasifiers with curved or rectilinear heating tubes, without or with an ejector scouring needle, it is obvious that these gasification members become so thin that their fragility alone makes them rapidly out of use.
This question of instantaneous ignition will therefore not be taken into consideration in the present patent.
The essential characteristic of the gasifier forming the subject of the present invention consists in the elimination of the tubular filter and of the central tube guiding the needle holder rod, these two members (filter and central tube) being advantageously replaced by a spindle filling the needle. heating tube, the said spindle
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
having a conformation appropriate to the purpose it is to fulfill and achieving, by its easy movement inside the heating tube, the automatic cleaning of the latter, as will be explained below.
In addition, this spindle can be stationary or mobile: in the first case, the spindle can be perforated along its axis to give passage to the needle holder rod; in the second case (movable spindle) the latter carries directly, on its extracted towards the ejector, the needle for cleaning up the ejection hole and the entire spindle is set in motion by the eccentric. Finally, the heating tube and the spindle, which should have a certain mini-surface area, can be made up of two or more similar shorter members, connected in an appropriate way in order to achieve a given result while presenting a substantially smaller size in the length direction.
To facilitate understanding of the description, there is given, by way of non-limiting example and in schematic form, some of the embodiments of the gasifier and some of its main components, in accordance with invention, by placing them opposite a gasifier known to be one of the most perfect among those currently known.

Fig. shows another embodiment of the gasifier according to FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 shows the stationary spindle of the gasifier according to Fig. 2, without the needle holder which passes through the nart pin in part, in a central hole.

Fig. 6 to 10 incl. show some of the ways in which the pins can be made.
Fig. It shows a gasifier with severed pins. In the illustrated case, there are two pins, but it goes without saying that there may be
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
have more than two per gasifier.
Fig. 12 shows the tank, the gasifier, the mixer and the burner with its incandescent sleeve for the case of a lamp.
Fig. 13 shows a boiling burner head as can be applied to a gasifier according to the present invention.
In Fig '. 1: 1 is the heating tube, 2 is the gasifier head, 3 is a hexagon bulge used to tighten tube 1 with a wrench, 4. is a threaded stud, 5 is the location of a seal (in lead), 6 represents the ejector, 7 is the unclogging needle of the ejector, 8 is the needle holder fixed in the head 9 integral with the rod 10 which passes through the gasifier over its entire length and protrudes downwards, where this rod 10 ends in a prismatic block with square section 11, provided with a groove 12 receiving the crank drive lug serving to impart movement to the assembly back and forth required to perform the cleaning of the ejector.
A central tube 13 serves as a guide for the rod 10 of the needle holder and at the same time serves to reduce the free section of the tube 1 of the gasifier. The free space between the central tube 13 and the heating tube 1 is completely filled by a sieve or filter 14 consisting of a piece of metal gauze made of brass, copper or the like, rolled up on itself and forming a kind of porous tube .
Practice teaches that this tubular filter, the diameter of which can vary significantly depending on whether it is handled in one direction or the other, becomes clogged very quickly. This is explained by the fact that when the pressure in the tank is dropped, the non-gasified liquid (petroleum, gasoline, naphtha), still in the gasifier, is filtered in the reverse order to normal filtering. and that the heating tube 1 is still at a high temperature, fuel particles are carbonized and stay in the upper part of the filter, adhering both to the filter and to the walls of the tubes 1 and 13.
The repetition of this charcoal very quickly ends up clogging the filter so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
that it no longer allows the combustible liquid to pass and, even more serious, makes the filter stick to tubes 1 and 13 to such an extent that it becomes impossible to remove the filter without damaging it to the extent that we do not know no longer remove it at all. In this case, the lamp is no longer in use and some essential parts of the lamp must be replaced, which involves costs. This inconvenience is unpleasantly felt in the Colonies, when the user of the device is far from an inhabited center where replacement accessories can be obtained.
As for the needle holder rod, comprising five assembled parts, it should be pointed out that its total length can vary appreciably, depending on whether these parts are more or less well assembled by their threaded parts and it often happens that the rod is too long or too short, which impairs the proper functioning of the device.
It is with the aim of eliminating the drawbacks mentioned with known lamps that the present invention proposes an important innovation in the constitution of the gasifier.
Fig. 2 et seq. Relate to the invention forming the subject of the present patent.
In Fig. 2: 1 is the heating tube, 2 the head of the gasifier, 3 'a hexagon reflective of tube 1, forming a cap nut with conical seat to form a tight seal at 15, without having to use a washer lead or asbestos. 6 is the ejector, 7 the needle, 10 the needle holder rod passing through the gasifier in its entire length to terminate, in the known manner, in a bar of square section 11 provided with a groove 12 used to maneuver the scouring device by means of a crank (eccentric), as is generally the case.
What is remarkable about this new gasifier is that the central tube 13 and the filter 14 (Fig. 1) are omitted and replaced by a single, robust and simple organo, represented by a pin 19 conforming to the shape of the tube. heater 1, so as to be able to move there with gentle friction. This pin 19 is provided,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
at the bottom, a square shank 16 serving to immobilize the pin 19 in a suitable position on its support. This spindle is provided with a helical groove 18 running over the entire cylindrical length, the birth of this groove being in a recess or hole 17 through which the liquid fuel arrives.
The helical groove 18 terminates at the top like the thread of a screw thread and, through this helical groove, the reservoir of the apparatus communicates directly with the top of the gasifier. The purpose of the groove and its helical shape is to reduce the section of the channel and to lengthen its length.
In the case of FIG. 2 the pin 19 is fixed and the scouring rod moves in the perforated core of said pin.
In Fig. 3, which is an alternative to the device shown in FIG. 2, the difference lies in that the pin 19 'is no longer perforated through and through. A short needle holder 8, provided with its needle 7, is attached directly to the upper end of the spindle 19 '. The lower square tail 20 is extended, so as to allow the pin 19 'to move vertically, which is achieved by the fact that this tail is provided with a groove 12 which receives the eccentric lug of the axis of which rotation causes the spindle and needle to move up and down. A groove 21 milled in the shank 20 places the reservoir in communication with the helical groove 18 of the spindle 19 '.
Fig. 4 shows, in more detail, the pin 19 according to FIG. 2. It can be seen that the perforation 22 in the axis of the spindle widens at 23 to free the communication towards the hole 17 where the groove 18 originates.
Fig. 5 shows, in more detail, the pin 19 'according to FIG. 3. We see the needle holder 8 with its needle 7 integral with spindle 19 '. At the bottom, on square 20, we can see the notch 12 for controlling the reciprocating movement and, at the front, the cutter 21 serving to bring the liquid fuel towards the beginning of the groove in propeller 18.

Fig. 6 shows a spindle of cylindrical shape 19 "with two plane facets 24, the intersection of which at the top is on a generatrix of cylinder 19". 22 is the passage hole of the needle holder rod.
Fig. 7 shows another embodiment of the spindle 19 '' ', which is also cylindrical and carries, from distance to distance, semi-circular transverse grooves 25, arranged alternately on either side of a plane passing through the axis of the cylinder 19 "'. These grooves 25 are connected by channels 26 arranged alternately on either side of the cylinder, so as to form a fairly long channel in broken lines.
Fig. 8 shows another embodiment of the spindle 19 '' '', to which for example the hexagonal shape has been given. But we can naturally give it any other polygonal, regular or irregular shape.
Fig. 9 shows another embodiment of the spindle 19 "" ', the cross section of which is profiled according to the "reamer" type, with grooves 27 which may be rectilinear or helical.
Fig. 10 shows another embodiment (moreover already applied in Figs. 2 to 5), where the pin 19 is provided with a groove 18 in the form of a helix. It goes without saying that instead of one groove, two or more can be provided, like a multi-entry screw.
Fig. It shows another embodiment of the gasifier.
Here, because the tube 1 is relatively short, it has been extended in an indirect manner by the addition of a branch 1 'containing an auxiliary pin 19 with its helical groove 18. The tube heater 1 'is hermetically sealed by a cap 28, so that the vapors given off in this branch of the gasifier must necessarily escape through the ejector 6 of the tube 1.
Of course, instead of a single auxiliary branch, two or more can be provided, as required. These branches can be arranged at an angle or parallel to the main heating tube.

Fig. 12 shows a lamp (without clothing) in accordance with the present invention. 1 is the heating tube of the gasifier 2, the head of the gasifier ', 3' the bulging part of hexagonal shape with internal thread and conical seat 15 forming a seal; 6 is the ejector. The tube 1 is mounted on a support 29 containing the eccentric scouring lug, 30 is a stuffing box giving passage to the axis 31 provided with an operating disc 32. The rod 31 is also provided with a stop 33 intended to limit and adjust the stroke of the scouring needle. 34 is a connection joining the gasifier to the reservoir 35, which is provided with a filling hole 36 and a pressure pump 37.
A tube 34 'dips to near the bottom of the tank 35, in order to allow the depletion of the liquid contained in the tank 35. 38 represents a priming cup; 39 is the mixer at the end of which the incandescent sleeve is attached40.
The lamp shown in FIG. 12 can of course be executed as a lantern, as a floor lamp or as a hanging lamp. In the latter case, it is possible to do without a pressure pump, the liquid arriving by gravity in the gasifier.
Fig. 13 shows a burner for boiling. The gasifier 1 with the ejector 6 and its 3 'hexagonal swelling is placed horizontally and the whole is mounted on a support 29 forming a 15-point seal. The gland 30 has a threaded extension going towards the rear and, a knurled rosette sleeve 44 is screwed onto this extension. Inside this sleeve, in its unthreaded part, the needle holder rod 45 can move, which is made integral with the sleeve. bush 44 by tightening the pressure screw 46.
As a result, if the sleeve 44 is turned in one direction or the other, the needle holder is moved forward or back, while rotating the needle holder around its axis. The device enables the position of the needle holder to be adjusted very precisely with respect to the ejector.
39 represents the mixer, 41 is the burner head, which
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
can moreover have any other suitable form; 42 are the slits through which the gas-air mixture intended for boiling escapes and 43 are openings giving passage to mixing streams directed towards the gasifier and intended to maintain the temperature thereof to the degree desired to ensure the relatively large flow of petroleum gas.
Basically, the mode of operation of the new gasifier according to the present invention does not differ essentially from the operation of the known device (Fig. 1); but the removal of the tubular sieve and the central tube, causes a considerable and lasting improvement in the functioning, since the spindle 19, being fixed so as not to be able to turn on itself, it sweeps the interior of the heating tube 1 when it is unscrewed. As for the spindle 19, it is extremely easy to clean it, since the grooves provided on its surface are easily accessible.
On the other hand, the fact of securing the pin 19 and the needle 7, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, is very interesting, because this makes it possible to eliminate several fairly fragile organs such as needle-holder rod, prismatic notched block).
Also of interest is the embodiment according to FIG. 11, which makes it possible to reduce the length of the heating tube 1, by splitting it by the addition of one or more auxiliary branches l '.... intended to increase the heating surface of the gasifier, without increasing its overall length.
The device forming the subject of the present invention can also be applied to domestic heating appliances, or to all other purposes.
