 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Pour mieux exposer l'objet de l'invention on décrira à titre d'exemple une première disposition, représentée par la figure 1 des dessins ci-annexés, qui comprend les éléments essen- , tiels suivants : R : redresseur à vapeur de mercure muni de six anodes avec grilles de commande g ; T : transformateur hexaphasé alimentant le redresseur R; H : déphaseur hexaphasé connecté aux grilles de commande g par l'intermédiaire de résistances de protection r; E : excitatrice à deux enroulements entraînée à vitesse constante par un moteur non représenté sur la figure ; S : machine à courant continu à excitation indépendante ; M : lampe triodé d'amplification; N et Nt : valves à vapeur ionisée munies de grillés de commande;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 'une valeur positive, par contre le potentiel egN va augmenter en valeur négative, La valve N' s'amorcera, le courant fourni par l'enroulement secondaire Ws du transformateur W, circulera dans le sens k h j f m 1. L'enroulement ± de l'excitatrice E sera donc parcouru par un courant redressé ic circulant de m en 1.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 tical).

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

    "IMPROVEMENT OF RECTIFIER ADJUSTMENT DEVICES
IONIZED STEAM EQUIPPED WITH CONTROL GRILLS "
It is known to use an excitation voltage for the control gates of an ionized steam rectifier consisting of an alternating voltage, of the same frequency or not as the anode frequency, on which a variable direct voltage is superimposed.

   In order to carry out automatic adjustments, it has been proposed to use an exciter with three excitation windings suitably controlled, this machine supplies the DC excitation voltage of the gates.

   The invention described below relates to the automatic adjustment of a rectifier provided with control grids for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 obtain any law of variation, either of the continuous tension as a function of the load, or of the current delivered as a function of the continuous power delivered, or of the direct current as a function of the current delivered by other machines coupled in parallel with the considered rectifier.

   The gate excitation voltage consists of an AC component, of the same frequency or not as the anode frequency, and a variable DC component supplied by an exciter with two excitation windings. One of the field bearings is shunt and the other independent. But, according to the invention, the exciter is used in a novel way which makes it possible to generalize the control prooédés.

   In order to better explain the object of the invention, a first arrangement, shown in FIG. 1 of the accompanying drawings, which comprises the following essential elements will be described by way of example: R: mercury vapor rectifier fitted six anodes with g control grids; T: six-phase transformer supplying the rectifier R; H: six-phase phase shifter connected to the control gates g by means of protection resistors r; E: exciter with two windings driven at constant speed by a motor not shown in the figure; S: DC machine with independent excitation; M: triode amplification lamp; N and Nt: ionized steam valves fitted with control grills;

   IL and N11: uncontrolled ionized steam valves; W ': supply transformer for the valve group N, N', N1,
N'1.

   The purpose of this -disposition is to obtain a voltage characteristic for the transformer-rectifier group T and R which is well determined, for example that the direct voltage Ec of the rectifier R is constant whatever the direct current supplied Io. .

  The exciter S is driven at constant speed, it supplies a constant voltage Es.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The filament of the triode lamp M is connected to the exciter S and the grid to the cathode K of the rectifier R. The filament-plate circuit of the lamp M closes on a resistor Q through a constant DC source P1.

   The valves N, N ', N1 and N'1 are mounted as a Wheatstone bridge,' the cathodes of the valves N and N 'are equipotential. The gate of valve N is connected through a DC source P2 at the x end of resistor Q. The gate of valve N 'is connected through a DC source P'2 at the x' end of the resistor Q. The 0 "midpoint of resistor Q is connected to the cathodes of valves N and N '.

   The exciter E is connected between the cathode K of the rectifier R and the neutral point 0 'of the phase shifter H. It has a shunt winding 4 and an independent winding c connected to the Wheatstone bridge of the valves N, N', N1 and N'1.

   The voltage Es of the exciter S is in opposition to the voltage Eo of the rectifier R. The voltage difference Es - Ec is applied between the gate and the filament of the triode lamp M.

  La'fig. 2 represents the characteristic of the plate current as a function of the grid voltage of the lamp M. When the condition Es - Ec = 0 is fulfilled, the plate current iM has the value OD (fig. 2).

  The gate voltage egN of the valve N with respect to its cathode is represented by egN = ep2 - eQ, eq being the potential difference between points 0 "and x 'of resistance Q and ep2 that at the terminals of P2. grid egN 'of the valve N' with respect to its oa - thode. is represented by egN '= eQ - eP'2' eQ being the potential difference between points 0 "and x 'of' resistance Q and eP ' 2 that at the terminals of P'2.

   The values of eP2 and eP'2 are set in such a way that for Es - Ec = 0, the voltages egN and egN 'are negative so that the valves N and N' cannot be triggered.

   If Ec> Es, the current iM will tend towards D '(fig. 2), it will therefore increase and consequently the voltage eQ will increase. The gate voltage egN 'will decrease negatively and may take

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 'a positive value, on the other hand the potential egN will increase in negative value, The valve N' will be triggered, the current supplied by the secondary winding Ws of the transformer W, will flow in the direction khjfm 1. The ± winding of l The exciter E will therefore be traversed by a rectified current ic flowing from m to 1.

   If Ec> Es, it is easy to check that the valve N will be triggered and that consequently the winding c of the exciter E will be traversed by a rectified current ic flowing in the -opposed direction, that is to- say 1 in m.

   The consequences of such a distribution of the current ic in the ± winding of the exciter E are indicated below.

   The shunt winding a. of the exciter E is adjusted so that its line of resistance O d (fig. 3) coincides with the straight part A '0 A of the characteristic e - f (ni), e being the voltage of the exciter E, (ni) the resulting excitation ampere-turns. When the current ic of winding 1 is zero, the voltage e that the exciter E can supply is undetermined, the operating point can be located at any point of
A '0 A. But on the other hand, as a result of the electrical connection existing between the exciter E and the phase shifter H itself connected to the gates g of the rectifier R, the voltage e must take a determined value .

   In FIG. 4, curve 1 represents the direct voltage. naked rectified Ec, curve 2 that of the anode 1, for example, the reference axis of these two curves is the horizontal y y 'corresponding to the potential of the neutral point 0 of the transformer T of FIG. i. In the same figure 4, with reference axis y1 y'1 corresponding to the potential of the cathode K of the rectifier R, are represented the curves Egal and Ego, Egal is the alternating potential of the grid of the anode 1 by compared to the potential of the K cathode. Egc is the DC bias voltage, in this case
Egc is the voltage e of the exciter E.

   The corresponding anode 1 starts up when the potential of its gate reaches the value 0 (which is not entirely correct, but in no way detracts from the explanation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 tical). When Egc = u, the anode 1 starts in L; if we took for. reference axis of the firing angles the straight line z z 'passing through the natural firing point of the anode 1, the firing angle is represented by o @. If we give Egc a certain value E'gc qualified as positive when it tends to move the whole of the curve Ega1 in the direction of the arrow a, the starting angle of - will come this) <Ó . In this case the direct voltage Ec will increase in value.

   We will assume that the angle Ó. constant has a value such that when the current I. delivered by the rectifier R is zero and Ego - 0 the value of Ec is equal to the voltage Es of the machine S (fig. i). It can be checked that in this case the voltage zero of the exciter E should take the value 0 for Ic = 0.

   Indeed, if e 0, and the operating point is at F (fig. 3) that is to say that e> 0, the firing angle of the anodes of the rectifier R will decrease, and the voltage Ec will 'become greater than Es. It was previously said that when.

   Ec> Es a current ic will flow in the winding c from m to 1.

   If the direction of winding .0. is suitably chosen so that the ampere-turns (ne ic) of o are negative for this current ic, the operating point of the exciter E will tend to come to G. In reality the voltage e will not reach G, because when the voltage e crosses zero and Eo - Es, the current ic will stagnate and the voltage e will be fixed at the zero value which will constitute an equilibrium position. The value of e may oscillate slightly around 0 (fig. 3) this will depend on the value (Ec - Es) for which the current pulse ic will be given in one direction or the other in the winding c . When the current charged
I will increase, Eo will tend to decrease but as a result of the operation described above, Ec will remain constant so that Ec - Es = 0.

   The voltage e will increase in positive value, so as to decrease the firing angle of the anodes of the rectifier R.

   This arrangement shows that the use of the exciter
E is characterized in a new way, the independent winding c

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 from the latter receives current pulses of constant intensity, the duration and direction of these pulses being such that the voltage e of the exciter E can take the values necessary to ensure the desired setting. This operating mode is interesting because the intensity of the pulse is independent of the variations of the controlled quantity, and makes it possible for small variations of the latter to obtain an adjustment without delay. Moreover, by choosing a sufficiently high value for ic, the adjustment of the voltage e becomes independent of the magnetic inertia of the machine E.

   The system causing the current pulses ic being constituted by valves also acts in delay. It is obvious that any other system can be used to cause the current pulses in the winding c of the exciter E, for example by means of a Tirill type regulator, the operation of the assembly. of the device remains the same.

   The voltage Es of a reference machine S was used as a reference quantity. Es was assumed to be constant. By adding an additional excitation winding to the exciter S, this winding being traversed by a current proportional to Ic, it is possible to obtain hypercompounding or hypompounding. of the load characteristic Ec - f (Io) of the rectifier R.

   Another application can be envisioned: keeping the direct current delivered constant when the power delivered varies. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement making it possible to achieve this result, the same elements as in FIG. i, except for the current pulse control system i.

   The exciter S driven at constant speed is provided with two excitation windings wound in opposition, one n is traversed by a current in constant, the other n 'is traversed by a current proportional to the current Ic delivered by the rectifier. - sor R. The exciter S can deliver on a resistor Q, the midpoint of which 0 "is connected to the point h of the Wheatstone bridge.

  The two ends x 'and x of the resistor Q, are connected res-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   pectively to the grids of the N and N 'valves. The DC voltage sources P2 and P'2 constitute a constant negative bias of the gates of N and N '. It is easy to imagine how the system works. When the condition in = in 'is fulfilled, no current flows in the winding c of the exciter E. If in' becomes greater than in a current flows in the resistor Q, it will be assumed to be from x 'to x. The N @ valve will be triggered from which a current pulse in the winding. 9. of the exciter E.

   If this winding is properly wound, the result will be a decrease in the voltage e and consequently a decrease in the voltage Ec, until the condition in = in 'is again fulfilled. If the current in 'decreases, the reverse operation will occur until the condition in = in' is fulfilled.

   The arrangement of FIG. 5 makes it possible to consider the parallel operation of the rectifier R with any continuous machine (rectifier or rotating machine) in order to ensure a suitable distribution of the loads.

   It suffices to supply the winding n of the exciter S with a current proportional to the current supplied by the machine coupled in parallel with the rectifier R.

   The control of the gates of the valves N and N 'can be ensured by other systems having a reference quantity, for example contact voltmeters, electromagnetic scales, systems with oscillating contacts to ensure the same settings as above. The choice that will be made of a device for controlling the current pulses ic in the winding. 9. of the exciter E, will be linked to the degree of precision that we want to obtain.

   It is also possible to envisage arrangements without valves, the pulse current being sent directly to the winding .0, of the exciter E by an electromagnetic balance with contacts, for example.

   It is obvious that one will not go beyond the limits of the invention if the exciter E is provided with two windings

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 similar to the 0- winding, one being used for a pulse of a given direction and the other for a pulse of the opposite direction.

   In conclusion, the combined use of an exciter with two excitation windings and a device capable of sending current pulses of variable direction in one of the excitation windings makes it possible to carry out automatic adjustment and speed of an ionized steam rectifier fitted with control grills. The control of the device causing the excitation current pulses of the exciter can be carried out as a function of various quantities, either the direct voltage of the rectifier, the direct current supplied or the current supplied by another machine. This control means can be obtained with a wide variety of devices but all of them having a reference quantity, which can be the pressure of a spring, the continuous voltage supplied by a low power reference electric machine.

The present invention relates to automatic adjustment devices applicable to ionized steam rectifiers provided with control grids. These devices allow compounding, hypercompounding and hypocompounding of the DC voltage supplied by the rectifiers, constant current operation as well as parallel operation of a rectifier with other direct current generators (re-operation). dressers or rotating machines) having any DC voltage characteristics. The adjustment devices are characterized as follows: 1) The control gates of the rectifier to be controlled are excited by an alternating voltage whose frequency is the same as the anode frequency or may be different. A variable DC voltage is superimposed on the AC voltage. 2) The DC bias voltage of the gates is supplied by an exciter with two excitation windings. A <Desc / Clms Page number 9> of these windings is connected as a shunt and adjusted so that its resistance line coincides with the straight part of the voltage characteristic of the exciter. The other winding is independent. 3) The independent winding of the exciter is likely to be traversed by a direct or rectified current, of constant intensity but of variable direction. This current is maintained in one direction or the other during the time necessary for the exciter to ensure the adjustment of the rectifier considered. 4) The current pulses necessary to ensure the operation of the system can be supplied by any known device, for example by oscillating contacts, switches, etc. More particularly the invention comprises a bridge assembly of Wheatstone of four ionized steam valves, only two of which are fitted with control grids. 5) The system causing the current pulses in the exciter is controlled according to the quantity to be controlled by any device having a reference quantity. In particular, this control device can consist either of an exciter, the DC voltage of which serves as a reference, or of an electromagnetic balance balanced by a spring, or by an oscillating regulator of the Tirill type. 6) The precision of the adjustment when using an exciter as a reference machine can be increased by the use of a triode lamp acting as an amplifier.
