Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   La présente invention est représentée à l'aide des dessins schématiques annexés, qui montrent les rouleaux dis- posés horizontalement, l'un au dessus de l'autre, et dans les- quels;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Improved method and apparatus for cutting paper or other sheet material.

   The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for cutting paper or other sheet material into pieces of a given length, more especially when the material is in the form of a web or ribbon.

   The apparatus according to the invention comprises a mechanically actuated rotary knife which cuts a strip or ribbon of material continuously into pieces or sections of the determined length required, the cutting not being perpendicular or at right angles to the direction of the cutting. length of the ribbon, but oblique, so as to form parallelograms or diamonds.

   According to the present invention, two rollers with parallel axes provided with helical knives cut the material during its passage between the rollers, one of these helices having a slightly greater inclination than the other. The helical knives are provided with adjacent recesses by which they engage. The roller fitted with the helical knife # dal with lower inclination is driven in a rotational movement, and the knife of this roller presses against the knife of the other roller which is driven in the opposite direction during the cutting of the material. The helical knives do not completely bypass the rollers, and interrupted gears are used to drive the second roller until the knives re-engage.

  The rolls are cylindrical, parallel and adjacent to each other over their entire length. The material to be cut is drawn or directed between the rollers and as it passes between them it is cut continuously into sections having the required shape and length.

   The present invention is illustrated with the aid of the accompanying schematic drawings, which show the rolls arranged horizontally, one above the other, and in which;
Figure 1 is an elevation of the chopping rollers, showing the helical knives.

   FIG. 2 is an end view of the rollers, showing the material as it passes between them.

   Figure 3 is a plan view of the material showing the appearance of the cut as the web passes through the rolls perpendicular to their intersection.

   In Figure 1, the upper roller 1 is in contact with the lower roller 2, or rests on the latter.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

  The roller 1 is wedged on a shaft 3 resting on bearings (not shown) of any known type. The roller 2 is wedged on the shaft 4 also carried by bearings, not shown. These bearings are preferably of a type allowing a slight displacement of the shafts, so as to allow them to be separated from one another. The shaft 4 is driven at constant speed by means of any motor.

   A knife 5 disposed in a helix at the angle at which it is desired to cut the material, protrudes from the surface of the roller 2. A blade is preferably used which is housed in a groove wider than it and held in the roller by means of water. white metal or other matt metal in the free space of the groove. The blade or the knife can moreover also be fixed in another suitable way, for example by means of screws, of a dovetail arrangement, by welding, or by forming the knife in one piece. with the roller.

   A helical knife 6, similar to the knife 5 of the roller 2, protrudes on the surface of the roller 1, but the inclination of the helix of the knife 6 is a little larger than that of the knife 5; for example, the pitch of the propeller of knife 5 is 55 cm. for a complete turn of the helix, the knife 6 can be formed along a helix having a pitch of about 48 cm. per full turn of the propeller.

   Recesses 5a and 6a formed in the rollers allow the knives to engage. When the roller 2 rotates, the knife 5 presses against the knife 6 and drives the roller 1 by a fraction of a turn, and these knives simultaneously cut or shear the material 7. The knives do not have to be radial, but can be slightly offset, the center of the groove in which they are mounted being for example at a distance of 6 mm., and the edge

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 cutting of the knife being for example at 9 mm. of the diameter parallel to the axial central plane of the groove.

   The rest of the rotation of roller 1, bringing it to the required position so that knife 6 can engage with knife 5 of roller 2, is effected by means of a pair of interrupted gears wedged on the shafts. 3 and 4, and not shown in the drawing.

   Figure 2 shows the material 7 which unwinds from the spool 8, and is carried forward by the action of the rollers.

   The dimensions of the rollers can be chosen so that their circumference or perimeter is equal to the required length of the cut pieces, so that the rollers at the same time serve as drive rolls unwinding the material 7 from the spool 8 to the desired speed, but the rollers can also be arranged so as not to catch the material which is then fed to them by any means of supplying sheet material. If necessary, the rollers can be hollowed out over part of their circumference so that during part of their revolution where they are driven by the gears, the material is not gripped by the rollers.

   This way of proceeding results in shorter wrapping sheets.
