 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  "Method and device for forming joints in concrete roads".

   It is a known fact that concrete road surfaces crack in many places under the action of temperature changes and thus become etal and thus deteriorate rapidly. This is why it is customary to constitute the roadway with a certain number of plates formed by making longitudinal joints in the concrete and transverse joints which are filled with a material which, thanks to its lower resistance, allows the expansion and contraction of the plates.

   This process has, in its current application) considerable shortcomings and its implementation requires the intervention of a labor force of a driving force and time

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 considerable. One proceeds for example as follows: one introduces in the still plastic mass of the coating a strip of thin and flat sheet metal, using a punch of the type of a knife, part called knife form-joint; in place where the form-joint knife rests, the strip of sheet metal is bent in the form of a U so that, after the complete push-back of the strip of sheet metal, its wings cut through the walls of the joint until the concrete sets; the knife is then removed from the seal.

   Then resort was made to the process of forming the joints in the already set concrete, using a circular tang.

  In yet another process, the joint-shaped knife is passed in the manner of a ploughshare through the still wet material and at the same time, liquid pitch is poured into the joints being formed, intended to support the joints. the walls of the joints and to prevent their collapse.

   It will be easily understood that it is necessary to bring in a lot of motrio force to work with concrete in the process of setting and that, moreover, this work is slow; in addition, when operating on wet material, it forms on the edges of the joints and in the vicinity of these, inequalities which manifest their presence in an unpleasant way when passing on the road; then the concrete, after setting, has only a low resistance in the wall of the joint and will have the edges of the constituent plates, because, as a result of the working process, it has occurred in this place, until at some point, a separation of the components of the mixture, especially the grains and milk of love.

   In accordance with the invention, it is possible to eliminate the above difficulties in an extremely simple manner. To this end, use is made of a form-joint knife which vibrates in an essentially vertical direction; this knife pushes back the wet concrete, by very small shocks which follow one another at a rapid rate, down and sideways; the knife penetrates

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 imperceptibly to the required depth in matter.

  It is thus possible to push back or remove the material located in the section of the seal to be formed, without causing it to come out of its rest position, swell or move the material in the vicinity or on the edge of the constituent plate which is form; in fact, friction is greatly reduced or practically eliminated, in the vibrating material. The repus @ e material thus penetrates completely imperceptibly into the wall of the seal which forms; it makes it more compact and prevents a separation or dissociation of the constituents of the concrete from taking place.

   To explain the invention, use is made in the present description of an exemplary embodiment of a machine used for the practice of the process and which is represented by the accompanying drawing.

   Fig.l is a schematic side view in the longitudinal direction of a concrete coating or road deck designated by B and which is still in the wet state (plastic); Figure 2 is a front view of the machine on its own, the various parts being shown in section; FIG. 3 is the corresponding plan view while FIG. 4 shows a variant of the form-joint knife.

   The joint-forming knife consists, for example, of a steel sheet 2 which, for consolidation, has a reinforcement 3 at its upper end and which is delimited by angles 4. A motor 5 imparts a vibratory movement. with a knife; on its shaft 6 are mounted two upper chain wheels 7 and two lower chain wheels 8 are a counterpart to these. A hollow column 9 serves as a support for the engine and the lower chain wheels; this support can go up and down in an open guide ring 10; the latter

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 is carried by a plate 11 which brings together the side parts
12 of a cart.

   The carriage travels on rails in? 14 by means of its wheels 13; the rails form part of a machine frame 15, the wheels 16 of which sit on the running rails 17 resting, on either side of the concrete plate B, on the ground.

   The maneuvering of the hollow column 9 and of the knife / which it carries in fact using a carrying fork 18 whose axis
19 is housed on the carriage 11, while a handle 20 of sufficient length makes it possible to control the whole of the device which can go up and down. Knife assembly
2 with the shaft 8 'of the control pulleys 8 is effected by means of an eccentric 21 on the journal of which is mounted an articulation 22 in relation by a journal 23 and bearing eyes 24 with the knife. The knife is guided by means of a T-shaped cross member 25), fixed to the hollow column
9 and the outer end of which engages in slides
26 fixed on the upper edge 3,4 of the knife.

   The operation of the device is as follows: when the lever is lowered and therefore the knife 2 is
B completely free of the wet concrete layer /, the engine is started. The knife 2 then performs, due to the low eccentricity of the eccentric 21, small movements or vibratory movements. When the lower edge of the knife 2 comes to rest on the layer B, there is a transmission to the material of these light strokes and short stroke and the material is thus pushed down and sideways without, for the surplus , matter @@ in its vicinity is significantly influenced or drawn into motion.

   The lever 20 performs a very slow upward movement, so that at the same time the knife 2 can sink insensibly, to the prescribed depth, into the layer B.

   We then raise the knife and advance the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 carriage 11, 12, the operation is repeated in the extension of the joint formed, at the desired location of the layer B.

   The device which has just been described can also, for the rest, be designed in various other ways in detail. Thus the knife 2 can have a slightly conical section, the tip of the cone directed downwards. The knife can also, instead of being made of steel, for example be made of thick and resistant cardboard, impregnated with a suitable material in order to enable it to resist the action of humidity; have a suitable metallic coating on its lower edge and after complete penetration into the joint remain in the latter as a filler material instead of pitch or other material. It also goes without saying that the joint can first be formed with the aid of a steel knife and that the cardboard is then left there as filler material.

   The knife 2 can carry side legs 2 ', fixed above or forming a block with it; these tabs are intended to exert a compressive action on the concrete at the end of the travel of the knife. When vibrating, the knife 2 can only move vertically or perform only a small circular or ellipsoidal movement, so that its oscillation components are in vertical and horizontal direction.

  This is perfectly in line with the principle of vibration control. Instead of a movement with limited stroke, it is also possible, according to FIG. 2, use a limited power movement of the knife 2. In this case, the control pulleys 8 are mounted directly on the journal 23, which carries an eccentric counterweight, while the ends of the knife and the cross member 25 are united by springs 30. It is also possible to make use of an arrangement consisting in mounting the guide ring 10 in rotation on the carrier plate 11, thus forming a kind of turntable, in order to form inclined joints.

   To form joint edges that are as clean and as tight

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 as possible, according to the invention, one can use a case made of thin sheet metal or any other suitable material which entirely or partially envelops the knife 2. FIG. 4 shows this design schematically; the form-joint knife 2, which constitutes the heavy vibrating mass proper, is housed in a thin sheet case 27 carrying flanges or rims 28 at its upper part. Parts 2 and 27 vibrate together and are thus introduced into the concrete material B.

   Towards the end of the penetration stroke the flanges 28 also come into action and act on the edges of the joint to make them tighter and to shape them; onleur gives at 29 a rounding corresponding to the radius of curvature, which better prevents the dislocation of the concrete under the action of vehicle loads than in the case of use of joints with sharp edges. To safely prevent the cement milk from rising between the wall of the joint and the outer wall of the gane 27, during the operation, it is recommended to make the entire outer surface uneven or at least to coat it with 'a material with a non-uniform surface.

   The case may remain in the seal and then be filled with bituminous material, cardboard or the like, or alternatively, it may be removed and the seal is then filled. In all cases, the case serves to support the concrete in the wall which is not yet firm. Springs 31 can also push the case slightly upwards.
