<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Au lieu d'un foyer spécialement installé pour le chauffage du corps principal, on peut aussi utiliser les gaz perdus d'une cornue de carbonisation verticale continue dans laquelle le charbon à carboniser est alimenté d'une façon continue après avoir servi comme catalyseur dans l'appareil de distillation du goudron condensé dans le barillet comme il est indiqué par la figure 3;

APPARATUS FOR THE CONTINUOUS DISTILLATION OF HYDROCARBONS.
The distillation of hydrocarbons such as tar, crude oil, oils, as well as hydrocarbons such as they are found in lignite, coal and bituminous shale aims to extract from these raw materials the most volatile products and separating these from the pitch, asphalt or coke which are the residues of the distillation.
Besides the use of asphalt or pitch as a raw material for tarring roads, most of the hydrocarbon distillation, about 65% of the total production, is used as a binder for the manufacture of charcoal briquettes. -
In the ordinary distillation of hydrocarbons, the final temperature at which the operation of the distillation is stopped is from 2850 to 3000 to thereby obtain an amount of residue or pitch which varies from 35 to 50% of the charge. initial of the retort.
The apparatus which is the object of the present invention makes it possible to stop the operation when the material to be distilled has been brought to a temperature of 4500 to 500, in order to remove tar or petroleum to be distilled in a larger quantity. large volatile hydrocarbons.
The advantage of the apparatus which is the object of the present invention is that the residue of the distillation thus obtained is used on site for the manufacture of charcoal briquettes by accompanying the tar or the petroleum to be distilled with a quantity of suitable charcoal to obtain a hard and solid charcoal briquette.
In addition another advantage of the device which is the subject of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the present invention is that the distillation of tar, oils, petroleum, is carried out continuously, in the presence of materials acting as catalysts, to obtain distillates of great commercial value, such as for example benzine and gas of 'lighting.-
The materials acting as catalysts for the distillation of tar, petroleum, oils, can be charcoal,
fatty coal, lignite, boghead coal, alone or mixed with each other depending on the quality of the products that one wishes to obtain, We can also add an inorganic powder catalyst.
In the case where the apparatus which is the object of the present invention is used only for the continuous distillation of tar, for obtaining benzine, light oils, and pitch, the catalytic substances accompanying the tar along its path through the apparatus, may be balls forged with substances whose beneficial action would have been recognized, such as nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, aluminum and germanium.
These catalyst balls are then collected by filtration of the liquid pitch leaving the apparatus and recharged in the barrel to start the same circuit again. The apparatus which is the subject of the present invention is represented by the attached schematic figures. :
Figure I is a longitudinal view of the apparatus.
FIG. 2 is a section through the same apparatus along line a b c.
Figure 3 shows a vertical gas retort system combined with the same apparatus used as the retort loading device.
According to FIGS. I and 2, the apparatus is composed of a barrel "A" in which the tar is charged with the catalytic materials @ o @ ises @ treatment, through the hopper "At". This barrel is inclined to the horizontal, so as to constitute with the liquid tar a hydraulic guard "IJ" making it possible to collect the

This riser is cooled in air or by a circulation of cold water entering through pipe C and leaving through pipe “CI” so as to maintain in the barrel the most suitable temperature for the products that are desired. get.
Generally this temperature will be greater than 90 centigrade and can also be regulated by the quantity of substances placed in the barrel. If, for example, the temperature of the barrel were maintained at about 90, the volatiles escaping through column "B" would consist mainly of gases loaded with benzine-benzole vapor. The mixture of tar and coal contained in the inclined barrel is constantly stirred by the action of an Archimedean screw "D", the purpose of which is to extract from the barrel a certain quantity of coal loaded with tar and from it. raise the slope of the inclined barrel by draining the coal,
by ridding it of the excess tar contained therein and gradually heating it at the expense of the volatiles released throughout the system. In contact with the relatively cold materials propelled by the screw "D", the volatile materials give up part of their heat at the same time that a condensation of less volatile hydrocarbons occurs, which are collected in the barrel to exert an action there. solvent on the charcoal contained therein. Arrived at the top of the slope of the inclined barrel, the coal is forced by the endless screw "D" to fall through the vertical tube "E" into the main body "F" of the apparatus.
The tube "E" instead of being vertical, can also be arranged so that it is slightly inclined on the vertical to break the fall of the coal and to slide it slowly towards the main body "F" so as to increase its residence time in the oven. The main body "F" of the apparatus consists of a cylinder of sufficient length, for example 7 meters, in which a screw turns which progressively advances the coal to the exit of the main body "F". The main body "F" is heated by the flames of any gas or fuel fireplace so that the temperature is no more than 500 and goes down.
By observing this precau-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tion to be taken, the mixture of coal and tar is progressively subjected to an increasing temperature, the effect of which is to volatilize all the volatile matters of the tar and at the same time to release from the coal the most volatile substances which partly constitute the primary tar contained in the coal. The primary tar from the coal, with the oils from the tar, are then condensed in the barrel "A", where they are used for the implementation of a new quantity of tar mixed with the catalytic substances used for the operation. .
On their way to the barrel, the volatile materials give up part of their heat to the material moving in the opposite direction, and by cooling down at the expense of the cold material that the worm "D" gradually brings along the slope of the cylinder. cylinder "A", they condense to be collected in the hydraulic guard "JJ" of cylinder "A". To prevent heat loss, the main body F, the downpipe "E" and the barrel "A", are surrounded by an insulating sleeve "FI".
The carbon or other catalytic substances used to make the continuous distillation of the tar, leaving the main body "F", at the end of the endless iris "G" are collected in a discharge hopper "E". -
The charcoal collected in the freight "H" can then be subjected to spraying or sold as such, or, as the case may be, the catalytic substances are freed, by filtration, on a perforated sheet, of the liquid pitch which accompanies them and then returned to the cylinder "A".
In the case where the catalytic substances used consist of charcoal, such as anthracite, lean charcoal, fatty charcoal, etc., a material is obtained at the outlet of the apparatus for which a slight pressure is sufficient to get agglomerates in the shape you want. -
In some cases, especially when using coal with a high volatile matter content, the quantity of tar required for the operation will be supplied by the coal itself, so that the quantity of tar to be used work re-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the following will ensure the constant renewal of the hydraulic guard, as the operations continue.
In the case of anthracite coal, the renewal of the hydraulic guard "JJ" will only be ensured by a supply of fresh tar, but the operations will be carried out so as to leave only the fraction of volatile matter constituting the benzine. benzols entrained by the gases and condense the remaining volatile matter in the barrel, Under the catalytic action of the anthracite which is to be agglomerated, these less volatile materials condensed in the barrel will subsequently be subjected to a carackage, the effect of which will be to transform it mainly into benzine-benzole that the temperature conditions at the barrel will allow to collect in the condenser, which is not indicated in the drawing, and which follows the rising column "B",
In the event that the production of volatile matter condensed in the hydraulic guard "JJ" of the barrel "A" is greater than that required for the conduct of operations, it will suffice to allow the temperature of the hydraulic guard to rise. of the barrel in order to entrain with the gases a greater quantity of volatile hydrocarbons towards the condenser placed behind the riser "B".
This could also be remedied by loading a leaner coal mixture into the barrel so as to reduce the quantity of primary tar released by the mixture subjected to the treatment in the oven.
In the event that several furnaces are combined in a battery, it is possible to provide a barrel common to all the furnaces, constituted in the form of a cylindrical tank provided with loading hoppers and inclined tubes provided with an endless screw, so to constitute, for each furnace, in the inclined tube, a hydraulic guard isolating the rising column of each furnace from the loading hoppers provided in the common barrel. In this case, it is also possible to provide for all the ovens or a certain number of ovens,
a common heating system established under the most economical conditions possible from the point of view of the use of heat, for example by making use of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
heat regeneration system using regenerators or recuperators.
The heating of the main body "F" is preferably done by ensuring that the main body is heated directly by the flares of a fireplace only over a third or a quarter of its length. Proceeding in this way causes partial condensation of the tar in the part of the main body which is not subjected to direct heating.
A better preparation of the coal acting as a catalyst is thus obtained with a view to obtaining semi-coke. -
Instead of a hearth specially installed for heating the main body, it is also possible to use the waste gases from a continuous vertical carbonization retort in which the carbon to be carbonized is fed continuously after having served as a catalyst in the apparatus for distilling the tar condensed in the barrel as shown in Figure 3;
In this case, the tar distillation apparatus is in the form of a continuous charging apparatus for vertical gas retorts, installed at the top of the gas retort through which the gas distilled in the gas retort is forced to pass in the opposite direction to the arrival of the charcoal to be charred, it
