<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
4U (.A.,t../ <!f rz.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

PATENT OF INVENTION, in the name of the company known as: CONSTRUCTIONS ET REPARATIONS ELECTRIQUES, Société Anonyme, for:
Motor unit for motor vehicles.
The present invention, due to Mr. Gaston JOCHMANS, has as an object a power unit for motor vehicles and especially for road motor vehicles, the object of which is to allow easy driving of the vehicle by an inexperienced person, even in the case where this vehicle is subject to frequent starts and stops.
Motor groups are known, generally referred to as Léonard groups or Yard-Léonard groups, comprising a motor, which can be started up with no load and driving an electric dynamo connected to an electric motor and provided with an inductor winding supplied by a driven auxiliary dynamo. by the engine driving the main dynamo.
These groups rotate at constant speed. When this speed has been reached, the excitation of the main dynamo is progressively increased, which causes a progressive increase in the voltage supplied by it to the motor to which it is connected and makes it possible to start.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
this motor without using a starting rheostat.
Power units of this kind, which are generally used for the control of winches, elevators, mine cages, etc., are not suitable for controlling the wheels of a motor vehicle because they do not allow a sufficiently flexible adjustment of the power supplied to the vehicle engine.
According to the invention, on the contrary, the main dynamo is driven by a motor the speed of which can vary gradually and is energized during this drive at variable speed so that the motor which it supplies also rotates at variable speed during. This time.
The motor unit according to the invention therefore makes it possible to make the engine run at idle speed during stops of the vehicle, which gives rise to a notable reduction in gasoline consumption - for vehicles which, by their service, have to slow down. and to stop often. The motor unit according to the invention also makes it possible to start a vehicle without involving any gear change mechanism. If the engine driving the dynamo is an internal combustion engine or an internal combustion engine, it suffices to press more or less on the accelerator pedal to vary the speed of the vehicle.
In order to avoid the use of a clutch mechanism, it is further provided, according to the invention, that the electrical characteristics of the motor unit are determined in such a way that when the driving motor of the dynamo is idling, the current flowing in the electric motor is insufficient to start the vehicle, the auxiliary dynamo not starting under these conditions.
The main dynamo can advantageously be provided in addition to the aforementioned field winding with one or several other field windings connected in series with the armature.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In order to allow the drive motor to rotate at the speed corresponding to the maximum power. when the vehicle is not to be subjected to frequent starts and stops, it is also provided, according to the invention, that the inductor winding of the main dynamo supplied by the auxiliary dynamo is connected in series with a rheostat.
In order to automatically reduce the engine torque applied to the wheels of the vehicle when the latter is moving rearward, it is further provided, according to the invention, that the contactor making it possible to reverse the direction of the current in

#) the inductor or in the armature also comprises an additional contact which, when the motor rotates in the direction corre- sponding to reverse gear, short-circuits the field winding (s) of the dynamo main which is or which are connected in series with the armature of this dynamo.
Finally, with the aim of allowing precise adjustment of the starting torque in certain particularly difficult circumstances, a switch is also provided according to the invention which, when it is closed, short-circuits the one or more. inductor windings of the main dynamo which is or which are connected in series with the armature of this dynamo.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto and which represent schematically, and by way of example only, some embodiments of the invention.
Figure 1 is a diagram of a motor unit according to the invention.
Figure 2 shows in perspective the control device of the contactor ensuring the reversal of the direction of rotation of the electric motor as well as of the rheostat and the switch in series with the inductor winding of the dynamo.

main supplied by the auxiliary aynamo.
Figure 3 shows in elevation a variant of the control device shown in Figure 2.
FIG. 4 shows a plan of a motor unit according to the invention for the traction of a train of vehicles.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
FIG. 1 shows an internal combustion engine 2 on the drive shaft 2a of which a dynamo 3, hereinafter referred to as the main dynamo and another dynamo 4, hereinafter referred to as an auxiliary dynamo, is wedged. This is, in the case shown, a shunt dynamo whose inductor winding 4a is mounted in series with a rheostat 4b. The current delivered by this auxiliary dynamo 4 passes through a winding 3a which is an inductor winding of the main dynamo 3. The inductor winding 3a is mounted in series with a rheostat 3b at the terminals of the auxiliary dynamo 4.
The rheostat 3b comprises a pivoting handle 3d and two serial of pads 3f and 3g. 3h resistors are interposed between the pads 3g and each of these pads is connected to one of the pads 3f by conductors such as 3k shown in dotted lines.
Thanks to this arrangement, a set of resistors 3h is sufficient for the two series of pads 3f and 3g.
One of the rheostat terminals is formed by one end of the 3h resistors and the other by a 3m contact strip.
The 3d joystick closes the circuit between the 3m contact strip and one of the 3f or 3g pads.
The purpose of this provision will appear later.
The main dynamo 3 also comprises inductor windings such as the windings 3p and 3q, which are connected in series in the circuit of use comprising for example two motors series 5 and 6. The number of inductor windings such as 3p and 3q thus that the number of motors supplied by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
main dynamo can be any. The motors 5 and 6 each include an armature 5a or 6a and an inductor winding 5b or 6b. No resistance is interposed between motors 5 and 6 and the main dynamo 3.
A contactor 7 comprising the contacts 7a, 7b, 7d and 7f makes it possible to reverse the direction of the current in the inductors 5b and 6b with respect to that circulating in the armatures 5a and 6a.
To make the current circulate in the inductors in the direction corresponding to the forward movement of the vehicle, the contacts 7a and 7b are closed and the contacts 7d and 7f are opened. To move the vehicle backwards, we close the contacts
7d and 7f and the contacts 7a and 7b are opened.
The contactor 7 further comprises a contact 7g which is closed a little before the contacts 7d and 7f are closed or is opened shortly after the contacts 7d and 7f are open. This contact 7g is mounted as a shunt on the inductor winding 3p of the main dynamo 3. An ordinary switch 8 is also mounted as a shunt on this inductor winding. The contact 7g as well as the switch 8 can each be mounted as a branch across the terminals of one or more of the field windings such as 3p or 3q.
The motor unit according to the invention can also comprise between the main dynamo and the motors a safety switch 9 and an ammeter 10 and at the terminals of the dynamo a voltmeter 11%
The motor unit according to the invention is calculated in such a way that, when the engine 2 is idling, the voltage supplied by the main dynamo 3 is insufficient so that, the switch 9 being closed, the motors 5 and 6 can operate. start the vehicle. The current which circulates at this moment in the dynamo and the motors is weak and gives rise only to a small expenditure of energy which translates into heat.
If the speed of motor 2 is increased, for example in -5-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
pushing on its accelerator pedal, the speed of the main dynamo increases at the same time as its excitation.
The current sent to motors 5 and 6 by the main dynamo increases at the same time and the vehicle can, after releasing the brakes, start and then accelerate as the accelerator pedal is pushed further.
When the vehicle is traveling on the road, that is to say when the stops and starts are infrequent, the average voltage of the main dynamo 3 can be adjusted by acting on the rheostat 3b so that the motor 2 operates. ne in optimum conditions despite the walking speed imposed for the vehicle or by road.
It is also possible, thanks to this rheostat 3b, to adjust the voltage supplied by the main dynamo and consequently the intensity of the current which passes through the electric motor so that at constant power of the drive motor 2, the motor torque developed by the motor electric is adapted to the resistance to forward movement encountered by the vehicle.
When the vehicle is moving backwards, closing contact 7g before closing contacts 7d and 7f has the effect of short-circuiting the inductor winding 3p and consequently of decreasing the maximum current that the main dynamo 3 is capable of. provide in reverse.
The inductor winding 3p can moreover be short-circuited by the closing of the switch 8, whatever the direction of operation. When this closing is effected, the current supplied by the dynamo depends essentially on the operation of the rheostat 3b. It will therefore be used whenever special circumstances require that the engine torque can be adjusted with precision.
The motor unit according to the invention is fortunately completed by a complementary arrangement having the effect of suppressing the current in the circuit of use before the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
break in this circuit. This arrangement therefore eliminates the need to have to use apparatus such as magnetic blowers employed with ordinary contactors to avoid the deleterious effects of live circuit breaks.
To this end, according to the invention, the joystick 3d is controlled by the member which controls the contactor 7 and the pads 3f and 3g are arranged so that the joystick is out of contact with one or the other. other of them until after contactor 7 @@ establishes the desired power to the motors.
In Figure 2, there is shown in perspective a shaft 13 carrying on the one hand a number of cams capable of closing the contacts 7a to 7g by rotation in one direction or the other and on the other hand, the lever 3d .
In the position shown all the contacts 7a to 7g are open and the handle 3d does not touch any of the pads 3f and 3g. If the shaft is rotated in the direction of arrow X, the contact 7g is first closed by means of the cam 13g. If we continue to rotate the shaft 13, we then close the contacts 7d and 7f by means of the cams 13d and 13f then the lever 3d comes into contact with one of the pads 3f, which has the effect of inserting the resistors 3h in the circuit.
If the shaft 13 is rotated in the opposite direction to the arrow X, the handle 3d first leaves the pads 3f then the contacts 7d and 7f open and finally the contact 7g opens. By turning further, the cams 13a and 13b close the contacts 7a and 7b then the handle 3d comes into contact with one of the pads 3g, which also has the effect of interlocking resistors 3h in the circuit.
Cams 13a, 13b, 13d, 13f, 13g and lever 3d could obviously be moved other than by rotation and
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
perform the same functions in the same order. FIG. 3 shows that these elements could for example be mounted on a rod 13 movable axially. The pads 3f and 3g are supposed to be in front of the rod 13.
The electric motor or motors of the motor unit according to the invention do not necessarily have to be carried by the same vehicle as that which carries the dynamo which supplies them and the motor which drives this dynamo. These electric motors can even be worn on different vehicles.
This is what is shown in FIG. 4. The main dynamo 3 and the auxiliary dynamo 4 are carried as well as the motor 2 which drives them by a small vehicle 14 on which the driver is located. From vehicles 15 and 16 forming a single train with vehicle 14 respectively carry a motor 5 and a motor 6 electrically connected to the main dynamo 3. This arrangement has the advantage of using all the adherent weight of the train to move it forward. this.
The engine of the vehicle 16 must be calculated so that the vehicle 16 is always pulled by the vehicle 15 in front of it. This additional feature makes it easier to drive the train when changing direction.
In summary, the power unit according to the invention makes it possible to do away with clutch and gear changing maneuvers such as those which must be performed on ordinary motor vehicles. It allows extremely simple speed adjustment and makes driving possible by inexperienced personnel. It is therefore particularly advantageous for road motor vehicles such as delivery vehicles for dairies, bakeries, couriers and for buses and lorries.
