<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
ceux-ci deviennent inutilisables.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Process for manufacturing tubular articles in alloys: iron or other metals.
The present invention relates to a hot rolling process for the manufacture of tubular articles made of suitable alloys of iron, steel or metals of the most diverse kinds.
According to the present invention, a mandrel, the diameter of which has a diameter such that it cannot be introduced in the usual manner into the cold blank, is introduced into the heated blank and expanded by heating, after which the The blank and the mandrel are reheated, as necessary, for rolling and the two parts are rolled in a known manner.
The core at a lower temperature heats up very quickly after introduction into the blank and this all the more so as it comes more intimately into contact and furthermore it expands in accordance with its increase.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of Temper-antler.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the diameter of the mandrel is greater than the diameter of the hole in the blank. The blank is then partially or totally subjected to a strong internal pressure under the action of the core expanding on its own or in any case more strongly than the blank. The edge layers surrounding the hole in the blank cool somewhat in accordance with the heat transfer to the core, so far as this heat transfer is not replaced by heat input from the outer edge layers and an inelastic deformation of the blank occurs. The deformation mentioned above takes place under high pressure of the expanding core.
This pressure is in any case, compared to the efforts widening in the other mechanical deformations, of very uniform action and is probably the cause of an advantageous modification of texture. Regardless of how the processes are carried out, the scientific explanation of which has not yet been fully achieved and by which the invention should not be limited, the result of this process is extremely advantageous.
The process according to the present invention can therefore be carried out, for example: in such a way that the preform is first heated to a high temperature t1 and possibly after removal of the slag a core being at a much lower temperature t2 is introduced, core whose diameter corresponds approximately \ at this low temperature t2, to the internal diameter of the heated blank è. temperature t1 and therefore expanded, and account must be taken of the clearance required depending on the desired mode il: introduction of the mandrel with or without mechanical auxiliaries.
This temperature t1 and t2 and consequently the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of its subsequent heating over the larger temperature range, can vary within wide limits without departing from the scope of the present invention although the effects are different, these effects however all constituting an advance over the present invention. current state of the art.
For the roughing, one can consider the iron alloys and the most diverse metal alloys which are suitable for this hot rolling process, such as for example simple carbon steels, known for this application, but also alloy steels.
Materials which are known for this application can be chosen for the core, for example alloys which facilitate removal of the core after deformation and which therefore exhibit high strength with high toughness. Suitable for the core, for example, are steel with a high manganese and nickel content, known austenitic steels, manganese steels, chromium-nickel steels, etc.
The core or the blank or both parts may, before the introduction of the core into the blank, be provided with a layer preventing the welding of the core to the blank, for example with a layer of graphite.
The blank is heated according to the above to a temperature t1 which is above about 300 ° C., preferably in the vicinity of the rolling temperature.
The blank is therefore heated, for example, in the case of simple steels, preferably at a temperature t1 between 900 C and 1100 C, but which depending on the composition, can also be lower than 900 or higher than 1100 - C, in such a way that as great an expansion as possible of the blank is produced, and care must be taken that known unfavorable structural changes do not occur as a result of too high heating, A temperature of 12002 n 'is more to consider for most materials and even less temperatures for which
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
these become unusable.
The core advantageously has, during its introduction into the blank, the temperature in the room or can optionally be slightly heated to preserve the material of the core, depending on the composition of the latter.
It is obviously most often advantageous for the priest to have the temperature difference t1 -t large, that is to say to choose accordingly for t1 the transformation temperature and to introduce the cold core. The partial effects which are always advantageous in Comparison of the present state: The technology can be obtained however already for significantly smaller temperature differences, ie for example for a much lower temperature of the workpiece.
It is possible, in a particular embodiment of the process, also to choose below the temperature of the room the temperature t2 at which the core is introduced into the blank, in which case less sensitive iron alloys are advantageously used for the core. to variations in temperature.
It is also possible to use mandrels having a diameter which does not allow the introduction by hand, even in the strongly heated blank. The introduction is done in this case by using an appropriate pressure and with the help of mechanical devices and possibly with a wedge-shaped conformation of the core to the tip. These embodiments are more complicated and are not necessary in themselves but should also be considered as falling within the scope of the present invention.
In other embodiments, it is also possible to push a core into a blank which has not been drilled beforehand and heated accordingly, possibly piercing in this way.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
re the blank and then introduce a cold core as before, if necessary after prior adjustment of the blank temperature. Unlike the process of Austrian Patent No. 120.344, the backing of the core is used here only for piercing.
The treatment according to the present invention of the preform before rolling can optionally be further improved by intermediate heat treatments.
It is possible to choose a core made of an alloy whose coefficient of expansion, in part or in all of the temperature range to be considered, is greater than the coefficient of expansion of the alloy of iron, steel or metal. of which the outline is made. This produces an increase in the internal pressure but the invention is not limited to this additional measure *
It is possible to introduce into the hole of the blank, heated before the introduction of the core, a lining tube which is welded to the blank, for example an anti-rust tube. In this case, it is most often advantageous to introduce the liner tube at room temperature or only slightly heated, and it must present at this temperature a diameter suitable for that of the heated blank.
Corrosion resistant coatings can also be provided.
The process according to the present invention is suitable for the manufacture of the most diverse tubular hollow bodies, hollow mine bars, etc., tubes, gun barrels and other similar objects. Its application is all the more multiple as the most diverse alloys can be used.
The objects obtained by this process have a homogeneous texture and advantageous quality properties. Such an object can under certain circumstances be heat treated repeatedly during use, as is necessary.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
necessary for the creation of new cutting edges, without the advantageous properties being lost.
By the intimate application of the core in the hole, particularly in the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is possible to practically prevent any slag formation and to avoid oval rolling and therefore also any formation. folds due to cracks in the material. Waste is reduced and material savings are produced.
A foil made by this process has a comparatively higher hardness range.
Example of embodiment: The blank is made of a material suitable for mining drill bits, for example, for example, a steel at 0.7-0.8 C, 0.25-0.35 Mn, 0.15- 0.25 Si, P and S together not exceeding 0.05%. Steel in the form of a bar with broken edges, with a length of about 0.6-0.8 m, diameter 100 mm, is provided with a hole of about 30 mm, and both ends are plugged with clay pads to prevent the internal formation of slag The bar is then heated in an oven, slowly, according to known experiments, to a temperature of about 800-900 C, then brought to the edge of the oven and a mandrel 3 which is approximately 0.2 mm thicker than the hole in the cold blank and therefore has approximately 30,
2 mm and which has been protected against welding beforehand by a coating of graphite, is introduced into the hole: The blank is then pushed with the core into the furnace and heated again to around 900 C, then it is laminated with In a known manner, the combination of the graphite coating known per se with the method described above also falls within the scope of the present invention.
In an exemplary embodiment in which the internal pressure must still be raised further, it is possible to operate in such a way that a blank is heated as before.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
drop or press in the blank, after which one operates as previously described.
In comparison with the present state of the art, worse embodiments of the invention are to be considered as protected, forms in which the diameter of the mandrel is approximately equal and possibly a little smaller than that of the hole, provided that the diameter of the mandrel is too large to allow easy introduction of the mandrel into the cold preform and that the mandrel is introduced through the use of considerable temperature differences in the relatively expanded preform.
In fact, in such cases there is already produced the possibility of using chucks thicker than those which could be introduced into the cold blank according to the existing degree of precision of the machining, and consequently a more application. intimate part of the mandrel, which in itself should be regarded as a valuable advance according to the present invention.
Another part of the present invention is its conversion for the introduction of tube cores which are corrosion resistant or must exhibit particular properties for special applications. To this end, a liner tube of suitable composition is heated, and the mandrel 3, preferably of a slightly larger diameter, is introduced into the hot liner tube, as described above. It is already known in other processes (Austrian Patent No. 109,260) to employ a corrosion resistant liner tube. This is not claimed here but only in the particular embodiment of the process according to the invention.
The mandrel may be coated with graphite or the like to prevent possible welding of the liner tube to the mandrel. The mandrel and the liner tube are then allowed to cool and are introduced in the cold state into the heated blank, the diameter of the cold mandrel with the liner tube engaged thereon being advanced.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
significantly larger than the diameter of the cold preform hole as described above for other embodiments.
Instead of a liner tube being mounted on the mandrel, the mandrel may optionally be coated with an alloy suitable for the special application to which the liner tube is to be used, the coating being applied by spraying or, when this is economical, by immersing the mandrel in a bath of the molten alloy or by other means, and similar embodiments should be considered as protected although they are seldom to be considered.
The invention should not be limited as regards the nature of the rolling of the part to be treated. The change in shape of the log can be done in a known manner, gradually, using a large number of gauges.
