<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Le dossier qui en effet se trouve, par l'avancement des châssis du siège, incliné suivant un certain angle, glisse par son poids sur les roulet te s 20, en faisant avancer l'ensemble du siège, grâce aux trois paires de roulettes qui le supportent ; finalement, le dossier prend sa position inclinée limite de la fig.2 déterminée par la rencontre de la butée 19 avec la traverse supérieure 2, position pour laquelle le châssis 5-6 est dans sa position de sortie maximum ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

sofa convertible into bed.
The present invention relates to sofas and sofas which, by a doubling of the seat frame, and a suitable overturning of the backrest, are transformed into beds. Its object is various combinations of parts which ensure a transformation of the sofa into a bed, or of the bed into a sofa, by means of a single, very simple operation, without any disassembly, the essential characteristic of the sofa according to the invention consisting of: that, by means of a simple traction, exerted even by a child, and over a short distance, the frames of which the sofa is composed move by themselves, by their own weight, to take the position they occupy when the piece of furniture bed form. these combinations will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing by way of example, and in which:
fig, l is a vertical section along I-I of fig, 3, the piece of furniture forming a sofa, fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the furniture transformed into a bed,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
fig.3 is a cross section along III-III of fig, fig.4 is a perspective of the cabinet in an intermediate position.
The cabinet has a fixed frame consisting of two sides 1-1, which are braced, at the rear, by cross members 2-2 and internally by horizontal cross members 3-3 which rest on the ground. Each side 1 also rests on the ground and is provided internally with a spar 4 to which the cross members 3 end.
The seat part of the sofa is formed by two combined frames, one of which comprises a horizontal board 5 bracing two side members 6; this frame is supported at the front by two casters 7 resting on the ground and at the rear by two other rollers 8, which roll on the side members 4 and have a diameter calculated to maintain the frame in the horizontal plane.
The two side members 6 are provided over the entire length of their internal face, with a groove 9, for receiving the board 10 which constitutes the second frame, This board is supported at the front by two rollers 11 rolling on the ground ; its front edge is covered by a board 12 of trim which, in the sofa, forms visible woodwork (fig.l). At its rear end, the board carries, at its lower face, a stop 13, while the board 5 carries an identical stop 14, at its lower face, but at its front end.
The side members 6 are each provided with a small projection 15 which, in the sofa position is engaged in a corresponding notch 16 of the side member 4, in order to maintain the sofa position. 17 indicates a board mounted on hinges which, normally, is folded over the board 10, below the board 5, while, when the piece of furniture is transformed into a bed, it is straightened against the board 12 and serves as a footboard (fig. 2 and 4).
The back of the sofa is formed of a board 18 provided with a top

laughing from a stop cross member 19. This board, vertical or substantially such when it forms a backrest, can slide on rollers 20 carried by the upper cross member 2.
Finally, the board 18 is fixed to the underside of a cushion 21, which constitutes the upholstery of the backrest and which is joined by a hinge 22 to another cushion 23, resting on the planohe 5 and the free end of which is articulated to a third identical cushion 24.
In the position of the furniture used oomme sofa, the two cushions 23-24 are folded over one another, and the cushion 24 rests against the part 25 in depression of the cushion 21 (fig.l).
The double cushion 23-24, supported by the board 5 is embedded between the sides 1-1, and the board 12 covers the front of the seat frames. to transform the sofa into a bed, the board 12 is pulled in the direction indicated by the arrow fig, l, lifting it slightly. by this lifting, the projections 15 come out of the hollows 16 and the assembly of the lower frames comes out slightly while rolling on the small rollers 8. At this time, the rollers 7 are left to rest on the ground; the sofa is then opened almost automatically.
The backrest which in fact is, by the advancement of the frame of the seat, inclined at a certain angle, slides by its weight on the rollers te s 20, moving the entire seat forward, thanks to the three pairs of rollers which support it; finally, the backrest takes its inclined position limit of fig.2 determined by the meeting of the stop 19 with the upper cross member 2, position for which the frame 5-6 is in its maximum output position;
It is then sufficient to pull again on the board 12 to bring out the frame 10-11 completely., The cushion 24 is then folded over the board 10, after having erected the board 17. practically, the traction on the board 12 takes place without interruption, and the movement of the parts will be facilitated by the tendency explained above from the backrest to
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
take the position of fig. 2. The projections 15 are absolutely essential, otherwise the person leaning on the back of the sofa would automatically trigger the opening of the sofa.
To bring the bed back into the shape of the sofa, we fold the cushion 24 on 23, and we simply push the board 10 into the grooves 9, then, with the same movement, the chassie 5-6 in its position of fig, l, the file returning by itself to ea posi. normal tion.
It should be noted that the piece of furniture being used as a sofa, no mechanism is apparent; nothing can detect that the furniture is transformable, if the piece of furniture is placed on a smooth surface, the transformation maneuver can be carried out even by a young child, in a few moments. The cabinet does not include any component liable to jam or deform during maneuvers; this mechanism is extremely simple, does not include any metal part (apart from the rollers and their axles, no hooking device, no lever, and can be built and assembled at little cost.
It is understood that the projections 15 and the notches 16 could be replaced by any equivalent members fulfilling the same purpose, for example a simple Terrou which would avoid the need to have to lift the seat somewhat to release the projections 15.
