 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

  * Improvements to oil dewaxing
The present invention relates to the dewaxing of raw materials consisting of mineral oils containing paraffin, such materials as residues, distillates and raw materials which have been subjected to extraction.

   Its object is a solvent capable of effecting the separation

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 selective paraffin with oil in a more complete manner and under more economical working conditions than hitherto. One of the objects of the invention is also a novel selective solvent capable of be used in dewaxing operations, this solvent being inexpensive to produce and having the advantages of a more complete separation of the paraffin from the oil as well as: lower losses of oil in the paraffin than those obtained by using the solvents hitherto employed in industry for this purpose.

   The invention is based on the finding that certain compounds believed to be dichloro-butanes have important advantages when used for the extraction of paraffin from oil. Particularly useful in this respect and can be used for the separation of paraffins in the crystalline state, in the amorphous state or in an intermediate state of the molecular formula is C4 H8 Cl2. 'with the oil, the actual operation, which consists in separating the paraffin from the raw material, being carried out by selective solutin of the liquid hydrocarbon from the particles:

   of paraffin suspended in said hydrocarbon and by separation of said paraffin particles from the solution by centrifugation by passage through filter presses or by decantation), the compound which has just been given by way of example appears to be the 1.3. dichloro- a methylpropane and has the following characteristics:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 EMI3.1
 the new solvents which are the subject of the present invention can be used for dewaxing by all known methods.

   The suspension of the paraffin to be removed is preferably carried out in the usual manner in a solution of the oil in the de-fining solvent which is the subject of the procedure. invention, by dissolving the raw material to be dewaxed in the solvent for dewaxing at a temperature high enough to dissolve substantially all of the material in the solvent and then cooling the solution thus formed to effect the pre- cipitation of the paraffin it contains. This paraffin is then removed by a process suitable for said paraffin either by centrifugation, or by passage through filter presses, or by decantation.

   In carrying out any process for dewaxing oil, it is of course desirable that a large proportion of the paraffin contained in the oil be separated therefrom so that an excess can be produced. oil with a low pour point. The word "for point *" here means the temperature at which oil deposited at the bottom of a vessel ceases to flow when the vessel is tilted.

  It is also desirable that the loss of oil by entrainment in the paraffin be avoided as completely as possible, that a paraffin containing a minimum quantity of oil is obtained and that one obtains a paraffin.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 'avoids precipitation and separation of ingredients from the oil, having: a high viscosity index, together with paraffin. Although these three factors are closely related and cannot be considered to be entirely independent of each other, it has been found that better coordination of results can be achieved by use of the dewaxing solvent object of the present invention that: pU 'the use of any previously known dewaxing solvent.

   The solvent for dewaxing, which is the object of the present invention, has the additional advantage of having only a relatively low vapor pressure although its boiling point is low enough to allow its vapor pressure. efficient separation of petroleum material after completion of dewaxing operations. The following example is given by way of illustration of the implementation of the present invention. In accordance with the present invention, a mid-continent distillate having the following characteristics has been dewaxed:
