Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>
 process and device for the thermal treatment of products originating, in gaseous and vapor form, from the distillation of bituminous fuels.

   The present invention relates to the distillation (coking) of bituminous fuels in known gas and coke ovens, and its object is to achieve improvements in the quantity and nature of the by-products resulting from the distillation of gas. such fuels.

   The invention is based on the conductive idea of maintaining for a certain time the hot distillation gases coming from the distillation of bituminous fuels, and this before their cooling or condensation, at such a temperature, or of heating or cooling these gases. at a temperature such that there is a transformation into high value products of the hydrocarbons contained in these gases, regardless of the temperature taken by the gases in the chamber of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 coking.

   The technical progress which results from the fundamental technical law summarized above is most clearly recognizable in the so-called medium temperature coking of bituminous fuels, that is to say a coking for which the charge of the chamber of The coking is brought to a maximum temperature of preferably 600,700 C. With such low coking temperatures, a tar is obtained in the secondary products, the properties of which differ markedly from those of the usual coking plant tar.

   When the products which escape, in gaseous and vapor form, from the charge subjected to coking at medium temperature, are subsequently reheated to temperatures of around 750 C., in a cracking chamber placed for example above From the coking space, the hydrocarbons are transformed into combinations such as normally result from the usual high temperature coking. In this way, in the medium temperature coking, which presents, as regards the quality of the coke obtained, very important economic advantages, one arrives also in by-products or secondary products of great value.

   Similar conditions also sometimes occur in the known high temperature coking of bituminous fuels, in particular when coke ovens operate under a relatively long distillation time, i.e. under a relatively low coking temperature.

  In this case, the temperature drops sharply in the gas gathering space, so that the transformations of the hydrocarbons no longer take place, to which, in high temperature coking, the high yield of high secondary products must be attributed. value.

   On the other hand, important technical advantages also result from the application of the fundamental rule of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 the invention to coking at high temperature, under normal or reduced reaction time. In modern large-capacity (large-efficiency) furnaces, the temperature of the heating walls is always very high, and the result is sometimes exaggerated heating of the gas collecting space.

   The decomposition of the hydrocarbons, thereby entrained to a detrimental and too extensive extent, a decomposition which can lead to the separation of graphite, is combated, according to the invention, because the gas collecting space or the cracking chamber of the furnace, where the distillation gases leaving the coking chamber arrive, is maintained at a temperature lower than that of the heating walls of the coking space.

   From the above, it follows that the basic rule of the invention allows a new step in the development of a coke oven in which, by an appropriate adjustment of the heating of the coking space and of the hollow spaces receiving the distillation gas, one can obtain a very wide variation adaptable exactly to all the possibilities of flow of the quality and the quantity of all the products contained in the coke oven, that is to say both coke and secondary products. The importance of the introduction of such a coke oven in the coke oven industry, and precisely in the economic conditions currently prevailing throughout the world, is obvious.

   The guiding idea of the invention is advantageously implemented by subjecting the distillation products in the form of gas and vapor, after their release from the fuel load of the coke oven, but before their cooling and their condensation, to a heat treatment in a cracking chamber connected to the coking chamber, the temperature of the walls of the cracking chamber possibly being, independently of that of the coking chamber, higher or lower.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 higher at the latter temperature, and can advantageously be adjusted to temperatures between 600- and 8000 C.

   The coke ovens used to carry out the process according to the invention have, as a fundamental point, the peculiarity that the walls of the gas collecting space - that is to say the space located above of the load of the chamber after the descent of this one taking place during the coking - are not crossed by the heating channels used for the heating of the coking space, and that the gas collection space is connected to a cracking chamber to which is connected the riser tube serving for the evacuation of gases, this cracking chamber being heated or cooled, depending on the temperature which must prevail in the furnace during a determined operating state, by adjustable wall channels independent of the heating channels of the coking space.

   For horizontal chamber furnaces, this basic arrangement of the heating system can be conveniently and easily achieved as follows:
The heating of the coking space of the horizontal chambers is carried out by vertical channels, connected in pairs according to the known principle of the current in circuit. The upper connecting opening between the two heating channels working together is arranged at such a height that, even after the load has been lowered during the coking process, there is no excessive heating of the collecting space. gas, from the heating channels of the coking space.

   The upper connecting opening of the pairs of heating channels is then approximately such that the coke cake has, for a pressure exerted in time on its upper edge, a thin, slightly darker layer. For this position of the upper connecting opening of the heating channels, the gaseous products of the distillation are protected against overheating and excessive decomposition.

   For heating the gas collecting space serving as

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 cracking chamber, or a special cracking chamber connected to the gas collecting space, there are provided, above the vertical heating channels of the heating walls, vertical channels controlled by registers and connected at their end upper with the formation of so-called hairpin heating channels.

   In this arrangement, it is possible to pass part of the heating gases from the heating channels of the coking space through the heating channels of the cracking chamber, and this amount which is, in each case, necessary. optimum heating of the cracking chamber. for the cooling of the cracking chamber of the horizontal chamber furnace, cooling stacks are provided in the vault of the furnace which are closed vis-à-vis the exhaust duct of the cracking chamber by a plate of relatively thin cover and close, from the outside, by means of removable covers which may be provided with adjustable openings.

   In the case of horizontal chamber furnaces whose chambers are loaded by pouring, the gas collecting space is usefully combined with the cracking chamber. But it is also possible to provide, above the gas collector space proper, which must then be made lower, a special vault channel which communicates through usefully calibrated openings, on the one hand with the space gas collector and on the other hand with the rising tube, in such a way that the distillation gases flow into the rising tube through the vault channel acting as a cracking chamber. The vault channel must obviously, in this embodiment, be within reach of the heating channels of the cracking chamber.

   The arrangement of the cracking chamber in the form of a special vault channel also has the advantage that, for a suitable adjustment of the registers with which the openings towards the gas collecting space are fitted, the distillation gases

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 can first be vented through the gas collecting space over its entire length and then through the arch channel over its entire length. The time during which the distillation gases are subjected to the heat treatment is thus prolonged in a possibly advantageous manner.

   In horizontal chamber furnaces which are loaded with pounded hard coal cakes, a special vault channel is regularly provided as a cracking chamber, preferably, which can be combined with a particularly low execution of the collector space of the gas proper.

   It has also been found that, in addition to the heating of the walls of the gas collecting space from the wall channels, the height of the charge of the chamber or, in other words, the heat flow of the channels of the walls of heating of the coking space towards the surface of the charge of the chamber limiting the gas collecting space, is also determining for the temperature of the gas collecting space.

   Another object of the present invention is to also make this heat flow adjustable from the channels of the heating walls of the coking space, over the load of the chamber, towards the gas collecting space. This object is achieved in accordance with the invention, in principle, due to the fact that the load of the chamber is, in each case, adjusted to a height such that the desired heat flow from the channels of the heating walls of the heating space. coking towards the surface of the charge in the chamber is thus regulated.

   It is clear that by varying the height of the coal bed above the heating wall channels, it is also possible to achieve an increase or decrease in the temperature drop between the upper end of the coal wall channels. heating (also called inversion point in the case of twin heating channels) and the upper surface of the load limiting downwardly the gas collecting space.

   In the case of the horizontal chamber furnaces known for the production of gas and coke according to the invention, the practical implementation of the process according to the invention takes place preferably in such a way that the leveling bar for leveling the load of the chamber can be actuated at different heights with respect to the load of the chamber, and that the adjustment opening provided in the door of the chamber receives a magnitude allowing the adjustment of the load of the chamber at the desired height in each case.

   As, therefore, the opening for the leveling bar is, for a high load of the chamber, more or less below the load, the invention provides, in the opening for the leveling bar, means, for example removable support shields, for supporting the coal in the chamber, even when the leveling bar is set high, and thus preventing the coal from falling through the extended downward adjustment opening.

   Another improvement of the invention is obtained from the fact that the gas gathering spaces of two discharge chambers are, at the end opposite to that where the riser pipe is connected, connected to each other by a pipe through which distillation gases can pass. of a bedroom in the next bedroom. This arrangement makes it possible to maintain the distillation gases at a determined temperature for a longer time, which is possibly of great advantage for carrying out certain transformations of the hydrocarbons.

   In the accompanying drawing, Fig.l is a vertical longitudinal section of a coke oven with horizontal chambers established according to the invention and arranged for loading by dumping coal.

   Fig.2 is a vertical cross section along the line II-II of fig.l.

   Fig, 3 is a horizontal section along line III-III of fig.l.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of a horizontal chamber furnace arranged to be loaded with a pounded coal cake.

   Fig.5, finally, is a vertical cross section along the line V-V of Fig.4.

   In the coke oven shown in fig. 1, horizontal coking chambers alternate, in the known manner, with walls in which vertical heating channels 2, 3 are provided. The heating channels 2 and the channels of heating 3 are connected in pairs, at their upper end, by the opening 4 and, at the lower end, by the opening 5. Thus, in the heating wall, the known circuit heating is obtained. The gas and the combustion air are supplied to the heating channels, at their lower end, by channels 6 which are connected in known manner to the regenerators not designed.

   As can be seen in the drawing, the upper connecting opening 4 of the heating channels is at a height such that, even after the lowering of the load in the chamber taking place during or towards the end of coking, the gas collector space 7 is not within reach of the heating channels 2. In fig. 2, there is indicated, in the left chamber 8, the charge shortly before its filling and, in the right chamber 9, after the end of the distillation. You can clearly recognize the steep descent during the coking process.

  The extent of this vertical shrinkage is variable. depending on the nature of the coked coal, a drop in the load in @ the chamber is observed down to 500 mm. This must be taken into account when choosing the height position of the upper connecting opening 4.

   Above each of the heating channels 2, 3, there are small vertical channels 10, 11 which are controlled by registers 12 which can be reached by means of control bars.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 adjustment through arch openings 13 which can be closed. The channels 10 and 11 are connected to each other by small transverse channels 14 forming hairpin heating channels.

   Within reach of the upper channel system, formed by channels 10, 11 and 14, is the gas collecting space 7 which, in the oven shown, serves at the same time as a cracking chamber.

  As can be seen immediately, it is possible, by an appropriate adjustment of the registers 12, to pass from the heating channels 2, 3 through the system of upper heating channels a quantity of heating gas such as to obtain , in each case, the desired heating of the walls of the cracking chamber 7.

  In the case of furnaces for the medium temperature coking of fuels, therefore in which low coking temperatures and therefore also, in general, relatively low temperatures of the heating channels, it is possibly advantageous to establish the separation wall between the cracking chamber and the upper heating channel system with a smaller thickness than the separation wall between the coking space and the vertical heating channels with current in circuit 2, 3. We obtain in this way, a heating, favorable in particular cases, of the cracking chamber to temperatures above that of the wall of the coking chamber.

   Furthermore, according to the invention, the masonry layer 15 separating the transverse channel 14 from the heating channels 2, 3 is arranged at a height such that there cannot be too much heat flow from the heating channels. 2, 3 in the parts of the masonry forming the gas collecting space.

   For the cooling of the gas collecting space or the cracking chamber, it is provided in the furnace according to fig.l, and in the vault, cooling chimneys 16 serving at the same time as openings loading, which

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 are closed vis-à-vis the gas collection space by a cover brick 17 and can be closed above by means of covers 17a. By removing the lids 17a, it is possible to lower the temperature of the cracking chamber as a whole or at specific locations to the desired value.

   At one end of the furnace chamber, there is also provided, in the usual way, an opening for connection to the riser tube 18.

   The chamber 1-la intended to receive the coal to be coked is closed on its two end faces, during the coking process, by means of doors 19 and 19a. for the adjustment of the temperature of the gas collecting space, the charge of the chamber is adjusted to various heights, as indicated by the dotted lines 8a. For this purpose, there is provided, in the door 19a, an oblong opening 20 which can be closed by means of a cover 21. This opening serves for the introduction of the leveling bar 22, of which the roller support 23 rests. on angled levers 24 which can be oscillated by means of a rod 25 and a gear 26.

   As can be seen in FIG. 1, it is possible, by a suitable change of position of the angled levers 24, to make the adjustment bar act at various heights relative to the furnace chamber.

   In the opening 20 for the leveling bar are provided protrusions or recesses 27 in which a support shield 28 can be interchangeably fixed. These recesses 27 are at various heights, so that it is possible to supporting the upper edge of the coal at various heights from the downward extended trim openings.

   At the end of the gas collecting space opposite to that of the connection to the rising tube, there is provided, in the roof of the furnace, an opening 29 to which is connected a U-tube 30. As shown in the figure. fig. 2, the U-shaped tube is established so that the openings 29 of two neighboring chambers are

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 interconnected. The U-shaped tube 30 is usefully surrounded by a material which is a poor conductor of heat. It is, in addition, provided with a stopper, advantageously a Schmidt telescope 31.

   The path of the distillation gases in the coke oven can be seen in fig. 5. The rising tube 18 of the chamber of the furnace 1 is for example closed, while the rising tube 18a of the neighboring chamber remains open and the u-tube 30 between the two coking chambers is open. The distillation gases then pass from chamber 1, through U-tube 30, into the gas collecting space of furnace chamber 1a and, from there, flow through riser tube 18a.

   It is generally convenient to carry out the loading and emptying of the chambers so that the operating state of the two chambers connected to each other differs each time by a half period of distillation. In this case, it is possible to always subject the distillation gases to the same heat treatment, since, for example, after filling the chamber 1 (see fig. 3), the distillation gases flow from first in the direction of the arrows 31, while, after filling the chamber 1a, the gases follow, after the corresponding reversal of the stop members of the rising tubes and of the U-tube 30, the path in the opposite direction shown by arrows 32.

   The coke oven shown in Figs.4 and 5 is designed to be loaded with pounded coal cakes. The heating system of the coking space, and of the cracking chamber is, in principle, the same as in the oven according to figs. 1 and 2.

   The gas collecting space 33 is, in the oven of FIGS.

  4 and 5, established with a lower height. Above the gas collecting space, there is disposed in the roof of the furnace a cracking channel 34 which communicates with the gas collecting space through calibrated openings 35. The openings 35 are located below the vault openings 36. and can possibly-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 be controlled by bricks-registers 37.

   In the middle of the furnace is connected to the cracking chamber the riser tube 38 which is lined internally with refractory masonry and thus constitutes, in a way, an extension of the cracking chamber 34.

   Cooling the cracking chamber also serves here cooling ducts 39 arranged in the roof of the furnace.

   In the foregoing, the application of the invention to horizontal chamber furnaces comprising vertical current-in-circuit heating channels has been described. But the invention is not limited to such furnaces, it can be applied with equal success to all coking furnaces.

   With regard to the width of the coking chambers between the heating walls, it will be advantageous, in order to obtain a high yield of secondary products and to maintain a relatively low coking temperature, which is favorable for this, to choose for the coking chambers a width of not more than about 350 mm. This width of the chambers is also favorable in that it allows the economical realization of the coking at medium temperature, without, with this width of the chambers, a detrimental influence being exerted, from the point of view of the size of the pieces, on the coke possibly produced at high temperature in the same oven.
