<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE PRODUCTION OF ARTIFICIAL COLD.
The invention relates to the production of cold and relates in particular to a process and an apparatus for the production of cold using a gaseous agent, more especially using atmospheric air, which can be used for the most demanding applications. more diverse, such as the cooling of condensed water, refrigeration, freezing, as well as the preservation of liquids and various products.
Its main purpose is to ensure this production in a more efficient and economical way than hitherto.
For this purpose, it mainly consists in providing, at the same time as a compression and an expansion of the fluid, in particular of the air, a recovery of the frigories not used in the refrigeration carried out and in applying the frigories thus re-cut. to the fluid, prior to its relaxation.
It also consists in limiting the cooling of the compressed fluid going to the expansion valve, by not using in this

aim that part of the cold recovered, advantageously by providing, between the refrigeration operation carried out and the cooling of the compressed fluid going to the expansion valve, a phase of heating the fluid having served for this refrigeration,
It also consists in performing this heating by a heat exchange between the fluid used for the refrigeration operation and an adjustable portion of the compressed fluid, then used either to ensure the circulation of the working fluid, or for any other purpose. .
It includes, in addition to the process which has just been defined, the devices and combinations of devices, as well as their arrangements, suitable for enabling them to be carried out and, so that one can clearly understand how the invention can be carried out. be practically produced, it will be described in more detail together with a preferred embodiment of the apparatus, given by way of example, and shown schematically, in elevation, certain parts in section, in the accompanying drawing.
In this drawing, 1 designates a compressed air line coming from a compressor of any suitable type (not shown) and provided with a regulating valve 2. This line is connected to an exchanger 3, illustrated by a tube bundle, but which could be of different arrangement.
In this exchanger, the compressed fluid is cooled with the aid of frigories originating from the refrigeration operation carried out, as will be explained later, and, at the other end of the apparatus, a portion of the compressed fluid flows , via a line 4, to a pressure reducer, which can be of any type, but advantageously of a piston type as illustrated at 5, this pressure reducer being followed by a bleed 6,
From the pressure reducer, the low-temperature fluid is sent to the user device via line 7, said device having been represented conventionnehlement by a coil 8, but may, of course, be different.
When the refrigeration operation is completed in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the device for use, the fluid which still contains residual frigories goes, through 9, into a so-called "heater" apparatus, illustrated by a tube bundle, 10, where it still leaves part of its frigories as one This will be seen below, and passes through 11 again in the exchanger 3, outside the bundle through which the compressed fluid passes and against the flow thereof.
From the exchanger 3, the fluid is discharged through 12 to the atmosphere or used in another way if it still contains usable frigories.
On the other hand, from the base of the exchanger 3 a conduit 13 is detached, provided with a valve 14, leading to the upper part of the "heater" 10. Through this conduit is introduced into the heater a quantity, adjustable to will by the valve 14, the compressed fluid having passed through the exchanger 3, this portion of fluid, after having passed through the "heater" 10, being brought, through the conduit 15, or to the refrigeration device 8 by taking the branch 16 provided with a valve 17, either at another point of use by taking the branch 18 provided with a valve 19, or simultaneously partly at the device8 and partly at any other point of use, the valves 17 and 19 being suitably adjusted for this purpose.
In the refrigeration device the fluid introduced by 16-17 is used for all purposes, advantageously, for example to ensure the circulation of the fluid in this apparatus and the conduits and return apparatuses 9, 10, 11, 3 and 12, or even more to regulate the cooling action, or for both purposes, simultaneously.
Whatever the use of the fluid distributed by the pipe 15, it emerges from the arrangement that, by a judicious adjustment of the valves 17 and 14 and in particular of the latter, it is possible to adjust not only the quantity of fluid introduced into the pressure reducer , but the temperature of this fluid, the increase in the portion passing through 13 to the heater having the effect of reducing the drop in temperature of the compressed fluid in the-

changer 3, due to a greater absorption of frigories in the device 10, and the quantity of cold produced in the expansion valve 5.
This results in the possibility of very easy adjustment of the installation without having to modify either the compression ratio or the expansion value, not to mention the useful effect of the recovery of frigories in itself and on the regulator efficiency.
As goes without saying, and as has already been understood, modifications could be made to the defined process and the invention is in no way limited to the arrangement more especially described, but also includes its variants. and its modifications.
