Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 distinctes.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  Improvements to combustion engines or spontaneous or provoked explosion, powered by injeotion.

   The spontaneous or induced combustion engine, for example electrically, fed by injection of pure fuel or pulverized by the injection of air by current means, cannot reach a sufficient velocity to be successfully adapted to numerous applications, which require a light engine with high specific power, high speed, high efficiency.

   Combustion in these types of engines is slowed down and very incomplete, especially at full load speeds.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 because the fuel is projected into the combustion air in a coarse vesicular state or even in the state of liquid streams which grind peripherally and even semi-peripherally if they are in contact with the metal walls of the piston or of the combustion chamber.

   In fact, from the start of the injection of pure fuel or with added air, the first particles brought into contact with pure air enter normal combustion and have high efficiency.

   On the other hand, as the fuel injection is completed, it comes into contact with a real mattress of burnt gases or in the process of combustion, which separates it from the rest of the pure air.

   Combustion ends slowly under very imperfect conditions during the expansion stroke of the piston.

   If, on the other hand, as has generally been done until now in the case of spraying with cold or hot blown air, a fuel charge is first injected at the tip of the injection needle which is driven then, in a manner that may or may not be delayed by labyrinth or otherwise towards the combustion chamber, the injection is irregular and shallow, the start of the injection not being sufficiently atomized, and massively projected.

   To obtain the velocity, from which results in part the high mass efficiency demanded from current engines, rapid, accelerated combustion is required, comparable to that of engines improperly called internal combustion engines.

   When we want to accelerate injection, mechanical or spray engines, the inertia of the food column also opposes the rapid and powerful flow required at high speeds.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 without shocks, despite perfect combustion and as fast as possible, the maximum pressure resulting from accelerated combustion must not be transmitted instantaneously to the entire surface of the piston, in neutral, but on the contrary with a slight delay. which must be suitable for the type of engine, its operating conditions or the fuel used.

   The invention described below overcomes these drawbacks by combining its various elements. figs. 1 and 2 show schematically the cause of the slowing down of the combustion, as a result of the very clear separation of the fuel and the oxidizer, at the start of combustion. fig. 3 indicates by way of example an embodiment of the invention applied to an engine of known type. figs. 4 and 5 are cross sections of the piston with variants. figs. 6, 7 and 8 are variants of the atomizing device.

   In fig. 1, it is clearly seen that the mass of liquid ingested in B is separated from the mass of fresh air 0 by the mattress of burnt gases A which opposes the mixing and consequently the rapid combustion and rational. according to fig. 2 shows schematically in stage / the poor combustion which results from the fact that the mass of fuel B, which was projected on the wall of the piston after having passed through the burnt gas mattress B is still separated from the mass of fresh air C by another mattress of burnt gas A.

   The invention consists in infecting at the end of the combustion air compression stroke, the charge of the fuel distributed at the desired moment, for the time

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 desired and in desired quantity at the same time as an injection of very hot air, compressed for example in the expansion cylinder, atomized and projects this charge into the combustion chamber, as it flows through the needle into the atomization chamber.

   The fuel injected comes from a reserve feeder forming a pressure accumulator for one or more feeders.

   The arrangement will advantageously be completed by the addition of a device which will reduce or prevent combustion in the atomizer itself as much as possible, to prevent the latter from heating up or becoming fouled.

   To finally combat the supply fault resulting from the inertia of the liquid columns between feeders and injection needles, the feed pumps will be shifted with a certain advance over the opening lead of the needles a momentary overpressure at the moment of the injection. opening of injection needles.

   The combustion chamber and the piston itself will then be arranged so as to stagger the distribution of the combustion pressure over the surface of the driving piston.

   The engine cylinder 1, fig. 3, has its combustion chamber constituted by a cylinder of the same axis, but of reduced diameter and ae preferably cylindrical 4 in the bottom of which are arranged the usual distribution members ensuring the main suction of pure air or oxidizer as well as evacuation of burnt gases. Shown at 14 is the projection of two valves of the same size, one for admission, the other for exhaust.

   In this cylinder, a two-stage piston moves, determining towards the end of its upstroke, two zones

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 distinct.

   The zone of the smallest diameter 4 or of normal compression comprises the combustion chamber 5 in which the injection of atomized fuel takes place.

   The purpose of the annular high-compression chamber 12 is to send through the channel 11 into the atomization chamber 10 a jet of pure air, all the more violent as the space 12 is more restricted with respect to the final volume of the chamber. normal compression 4 that the height 1 of the step is greater compared to the total stroke L of the piston.

   The expansion index will be practically all the greater when the diameter d is smaller compared to the diameter D of the piston; it can be seen that the motor will be all the more economical and will heat all the less as this index is large.

   The fuel is accumulated under sufficient pressure in a feeder 7 from where it goes to the injection needle 8 controlled by a cam with verifiable adjustment, from the point of view of the opening point, relative to the motor shaft , the duration of the opening, the quantity flow.

   Since the eame 9 will ensure the variable lifting of the needle during the period when the compressed and heated air in 12 will gain by 11 the atomization chamber and the lower compression chamber 4, we will have continuous and violent drive towards the inside the chamber 4 of the atomized liquid as it is injected into 10.

   To prevent any return of burnt gas at 10 during the downward stroke of the piston, a check valve 15, fig.8, suitable, preferably opening from bottom to top, can be placed in channel 11.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   An additional injection of air through channel 16, fuel or liquid or vaporized water can also be carried out at 13.

   To ensure better operation at idling speeds, it is also possible to partially block channel 11 to reduce the dispersion of the fuel at these speeds, which would no longer ignite through excess dispersion in the air; figs. 6, 7 and 8 show a shutter 13 open for the large marcne in fig. 6 and 8 and partially closed for idling in fig. 7.

   We can advantageously arrange around the room
 EMI6.1
 4 one or more atomisenr-eomplémentaires injectors supplied as described above.

   It is understood that the general operation will be improved by known scanning systems.

   The dimensions and shape of the openings of the small diameter penetrating part of the piston can be varied, so as to advance or delay the transmission of pressure on the actual surface of the top piston and on the annular surface, as indicated in fig. 5, case of very fast motors.

   As shown in fig. 4, it is possible to give a longitudinally recessed shape to the combustion chamber 5 in order to slow down the flame front by rolling in the narrow space left between the cylinder bottom and the surface of the piston.
