<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
à la fig. 3.
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Aerial locomotion machine.
The present invention relates to an aerial locomotion machine of the kind in which the lifting movement is derived completely or partially from an upper rotating wing system generally designated by the term "rotor" which rotates about a more or less axis. less vertical and more particularly to a machine of this type in which the angles of incidence of the rotor blades with the air current, that is to say the angles at which they are placed with respect to their general plane of rotation, are variable so as to allow the ac-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
heave to be modified to adapt to the conditions at the time.
The invention also relates particularly to vehicles in which the rotor is self-rotating ', and is ¯. say in which it is rotated by the action of the flying wind.
During take-off, with a machine of this type, the blades are placed in a position - in which they have no angle of incidence or have a negative incidence and they are then put into mechanical rotation - - slow, for example, being coupled to the drive unit of the machine. As soon as the pilot feels that the blades are rotating at a speed high enough to provide the desired lifting action, he adjusts them until they have a positive angle of incidence, he increases the speed of the aircraft. ordinary propeller, after which the machine rises.
It is clear, however, that before the machine takes off, it will be necessary to disconnect the rotor from the drive unit, since, if the rotor continues to be operated in a poisonous manner, the reaction of torque between the rotor and the fuselage could cause the fuselage to rotate in the opposite direction to the rotor.
In order to allow this necessary disconnection to be carried out, in actual practice, a control is provided by which the pilot can couple and disconnect the control from the rotor at will.
According to the present invention for this reason, the aerial locomotion machine of the type described is characterized by the combination of means for varying the angles of incidence of the rotor pays off and means for the area so that the rotor or positively uncoupled from its control means as soon as the blades have been brought to predetermined angles of incidence.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
More precisely, means are provided for varying the angles of incidence of the rotor blades, a mechanism for actuating the rotor, a device which can be disconnected from this mechanism and means for connecting it, in a ratio of operation, the means for varying the angles of incidence of the blades with this disconnectable device, the arrangement being such that as soon as the rotor blades have been brought to predetermined angles of incidence, the device disconnects plable is automatically activated in order to deactivate the rotor control mechanism.
In a suitable construction, there is provided a mechanism for varying the angles of incidence of the rotor blades, a control for actuating this mechanism, means for connecting, in an operating ratio, the rotor to a control member, a clutch incorporated in these means, a control for actuating the clutch and means for connecting the control actuating the incidence variation mechanism to the clutch control, so that when the incidence control has been brought into a detent position - pre-mined, it automatically disengages the clutch control from the position in which it acted to engage the clutch.
In this construction, the rotor blades can be actuated by a mechanism comprising a clutch arranged to be actuated by a control, the clutch control cooperating with means which hold it in the position in which the clutch is engaged. until these means are actuated to release the control under the action of the incidence control.
These retaining means may consist of a

latch or pawl capable of engaging with the clutch control when the latter is in the position in which the clutch is engaged, this latch or pawl tending to move out of engagement with the clutch control , means being provided which normally maintain the latch or pawl in a position allowing engagement of the clutch control, and which are connected to the angle of attack control, such that when the latter is moved to a predetermined position, these means are immediately moved in a direction allowing the latch or pawl to disengage the clutch control.
The pawl is preferably pushed normally into a position in which it can be engaged with a ratchet cooperating with the clutch control under the action of elastic means, this pawl being normally supported in its engagement position with the ratchet, near a member which, when it is moved in one direction by the modvement of the incidence control, allows the pawl to move into a position in which it can no longer engage with the ratchet until this organ has been returned to its original position.
As an additional safety, the pawl is mounted, day allowing its movement towards the ratchet and by- -Glove of the latter so that in the event that the elastic means should break, the pawl would immediately move into a position in which it cannot engage the ratchet. The member cooperating with the pawl may be a sliding bar which / coupled to means bringing together, in an operating relationship, this bar to the incidence control by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the intermediary of a member which allows this bar to be moved, so as to make the pawl inactive without disturbing the incidence control.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example only, one form of construction of the invention.
FIG. 1 shows schematically the means for actuating the control of the rotor.
Figure 2 is a plan view corresponding to the figure.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the control lever of the friction clutch.
Figure 4 is a plan view corresponding to Figure 3.
If we refer more specifically to fig. 1 and 2 ; the rotor hub (not shown) can be actuated by the motor in the manner described in another application in dependence thereon, by means of a starting pinion arranged eccentrically, the rod of which is connected by a universal joint 1 to a telescopic shaft 2 for controlling the rotor, the lower end of which is connected by a universal joint 3 to the output shaft 4 of the friction cone box 5.
The input shaft (not shown) of the friction cone box is connected to one of the elements of a friction clutch
6, the other element of which is connected to the propeller shaft 8 of the engine via a tubular shaft 7 in which one end of the propeller shaft can slide.
The opposite end of the shaft 8 is provided with an element of a claw clutch, the other element of which is on the crankshaft of the motor; the two elements are normally uncoupled but can be engaged by means of a clutch lever 9 capable of moving the shaft 8 in both directions to engage and disengage
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of the claw clutch. the control member for engaging the starting pinion with the toothed wheel cooperating with it on the hub, of the rotor also acts to control the engagement and disengagement of the claw clutch; this arrangement is fully described in An application in dependence thereon.
The actuation derived from the motor to the rotor hub is thus transmitted by the claw clutch, the shafts 8 and 7, the friction clutch 6, the friction cone box 5 and the shaft 2.
The frictional clutch 6 is controlled by a lever 10 to which is connected the upper end of a rod 11, the lower end of which is connected to an arm of an elbow lever 12 articulated on an arm 13 carried by the fuselage structure. The lever 10 is disposed at an angle in the direction in which the clutch will be uncoupled by means of a tension spring 14 and is pressed into the engagement position of the clutch by a push rod 15 connected to the clutch. further arm of the crank lever 12 through the spring coupling 16 which acts to prevent harshness of engagement of the clutch members.
As shown in Figures 3 to 5, the other end of the rod 15 is connected to a member forming a ratchet 17 to which is connected a hand lever 17 A located within reach of the pilot. This member pivots at 18 between two support plates 19 and is provided, at one end, with ratchet teeth: .0 which can be taken, when necessary, by a pawl 21 carried freely by a pin forming a pivot 22 penetrating into an elongated groove 23 formed in the pawl.
When the friction clutch 6 (fig.l) is disengaged, the lever 17A, the ratchet 17 and the pawl 21 are in the positions shown in solid lines.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in fig. 3. The spring 24 tends to maintain the pawl in this position thanks to the flat underside of the pawl and under these conditions a bar 25 which can move between the plates 19 is free to move from the position shown in solid lines to 'to the position shown in dotted lines and vice versa.
By means of means which will be described below, it is ensured that when the angle of attack control lever, described in an application in dependence thereon, is in the position corresponding to the negative angle of incidence of the blades. of the rotor, the slide bar 25 is in the position shown in solid lines with the corner 26 of the pawl 27 just disengaged from the bar or touching it only slightly. In order to engage the clutch, the pilot lifts lever 17A, allowing ratchet member 17 and rod 15 to move to the positions shown by the dotted lines.
At the same time the ratchet 20 bears against the pawl 21 and presses it downwards against the resistance of the spring 24 and, due to the shape and arrangement of the groove 25 in the pawl, the movement of the The resulting pawl is virtually clockwise around its corner 26. It is obvious that after a certain amount of movement of the pawl in this direction, the teeth forming. ratchet 20 could continue their downward movement beyond the corner 28 of the pawl without any obstacle other than the spring 24 which presses, slightly but continuously, the pawl against the downward elongated faces of the ratchet teeth.
When the clutch 6 is fully engaged, the pilot releases the lever 17 A which tends to return to its original position and thus to reverse all the movements described above. The shorter side of one of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
teeth 20 is however engaged with the underside of the
21 corner 28 of the pawl / and thus tends to make the pawl turn counterclockwise, but it is unable to do so since the bottom of the groove 23 is engaged with it. the fixed rod 22 and that the wedge 26 of the pawl is in contact with the sliding bar 25. This is why, as the pawl cannot reverse its movement,
it stops the return movement of the ratchet and thus maintains the clutch in engagement.
In order to disengage the clutch 6, the sliding bar 25 is moved into the position indicated in dotted lines, by means described below, in which position the recess 27 is brought opposite the corner 26 of the pawl which can then rotate in counterclockwise, around rod 22 enough to allow wedge 28 to swing out of the way of the ratchet teeth, as shown by dotted lines 21A in Fig.3.
The levers 17 and 17A as well as the rod 15 can then resume their original positions under the action of the spring 14 (fig. 1 and 2) and the clutch 6 is released.
In the event that the spring 24 should break, the pawl 21 could descend to the end of the groove 23 engaged with the pin 22 and in this position which is shown in dotted lines at 21B in FIG. 3, the pawl could not intervene to keep the clutch 6 engaged and it could not limit the steering of the slide bar 25. This arrangement is important since, as will be described hereinafter, the bar 25 is connected to the incidence control mechanism with the free movement of which there can be no interference. 'obstacle.
Figure 1 schematically represents a needle

29 cooperating with a 30 graduated scale of divisions corresponding to the angles of incidence of the rotor pays. As described in an application in dependence thereon, this needle articulates with the control actuated by the pilot to vary the angles of incidence of the rotor blades, so that the indicator must move in combination with In this control, the slide bar 25 is connected to one end of an adjustable compound bar 31 through the lower end of a loaded jaw clutch 32. by spring which can be pushed upwards relative to its:
upper part in opposition to the spring in order to lift the sliding bar 25. However, this clutch acts as a part integral with the bar 31, when the latter is pushed upwards, as will be described below. The upper end of the bar 31 is connected to a part fixed to the needle 29, as described in the description of a dependent application, and this coupling 32 is provided with an external hook (not shown) thanks to which the part of the The coupling connected to the bar 25 can be lifted, as mentioned above, without. disturb the part connected to the bar 31. A support 33 is provided to support the lever 17A when the latter is in its non-operating position.
When the aerial locomotive is on the ground, the rotor blades are held normally with their negative angles of incidence so that the craft can be safely left in place, even in a violent veht sufficient to rotate. the rotor blades, since, as the blades are in a negative incidence, there is no danger that the blades will be pushed upwards or that the machine will be lifted by the wind; Before the machine is started, the pilot engages the claw clutch described and the starting pinion.
When the machine is running slowly, it tends to

then vote the hand lever 17A upwards thereby actuating the friction clutch 6 via the connecting rod 15, the spring coupling 16, the bent lever 12, the rod 11 and the lever 10, the spring 14 being energized. The starting pinion, which is already engaged with its corresponding wheel on the rotor hub is then rotated by this claw clutch, the shafts 8 and 7, the friction clutch 6, the cone box friction 5 and shafts 4 and 2.
In the meantime, the machine is held stationary by means of wheel brakes operated by linkage pedals and the engine then accelerates until the rotor reaches a predetermined speed, after which the brakes are released. . during movement. towards the top of the hand lever 17A, the corner 28 of the pawl 21 will have been engaged behind one of the teeth 20 of the ratchet member 17, thereby acting to hold the lever 17A in position. in which the friction clutch is engaged.
The pilot then pushes the control backwards to vary the angles of incidence of the rotor blades from its original negative incidence position to the position in which the blades will be in the maximum positive incidence positions. . The needle 29, in fact, moves simultaneously with this command, and, in doing so, it pushes upwards, the sliding bar 25 in the position (shown in figure 3 in dotted lines) in which the corner 26 of the pawl is pushed by faction of the lever 17A loaded by spring under the shoulder 27 of the bar 25, the pawl then being in the position shown in solid lines ,,; lA with its corner 28 clear of the teeth 20.
This movement of
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
the bar 25 takes place when the angle of attack control has moved a predetermined distance to the position of maximum incidence, the distance being able to be changed by making the compound bar 31 adjustable.
The friction clutch 6 is then released under the action of the tension spring 14 and the lever 10, the rod 11, the bent lever 12, the connecting rod 15, the member forming the ratchet 17 and the lever 17A are then brought back into their original positions. -In the meantime, the pawl 21 will return to its original position shown in solid lines under the action of the spring 24 leaving an unrestricted passage for the sliding bar 25 when it is pushed downwards, while the incidence control lever is returned to the position corresponding to the negative incidence of the rotor blades.
Only, the friction clutch 6 is disengaged when the incidence control has reached the zero incidence position in its movement towards positive incidence, but at about the same time as the clutch is disengaged, the The claw clutch in question and the drive gear are also brought into their non-operating positions. There is therefore a double security against the case. the rotor would be actuated by the motor after the rotor blades have passed a selected point in their movement from negative incidence positions to positive incidence positions.
It will be appreciated that by virtue of the present invention, it will definitely become impossible for the pilot to attempt to raise the air locomotive without disconnecting the rotor from the engine, which provides safety and makes it possible to considerably simplify. take-off action. As long as the incidence control remains on the positive incidence side of the point at which clutch 6 is moved, the clutch cannot

be kept in engagement with pawl 21. Lever 17A can be lifted up and the clutch engaged, but this would have no effect, as long as the claw clutch and pinion gear. start-up mentioned are inactive.
