<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Handling device.
The present invention relates to handling and lifting devices of the type of winches. Its aim is to provide an apparatus of this type which makes it possible to achieve traction in all directions, whether horizontal, vertical or oblique, without having to use return devices.
For this purpose, the handling apparatus, object of the invention, of the type comprising a drum with a horizontal axis, is characterized in that this drum is mounted on a vertical axis pivot, such that the vertical axis and the horizontal axis intersect without meeting.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, the winding plane of the tractor strand passes substantially through the vertical pivot axis of the device.
In order to achieve a compact unit, the horizontal drum

zontal is integral with a motor device provided with a speed reducer which consequently follows the movements of the drum around the vertical axis of rotation.
In the case where the handling device performs pulls directed in the vertical or oblique direction from top to bottom, the slider in which the vertical axis is mounted present, at its base, means preventing it removed from this axis of its support.
The accompanying drawing shows an exemplary embodiment of a handling apparatus constructed according to the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partially sectioned, of a handling device intended for traction both in the horizontal plane and in the vertical plane, the frame being provided with means fixing the vertical axis in its support.
FIG. 2 is a front view corresponding to FIG. 1 showing an apparatus placed in an ordinary crapaudine.
In these figures, 1 denotes a drum of any shape that can rotate around a horizontal axis 2. This drum 1 is integral with a part 3 which forms a unit with a pivot with a vertical axis arranged in a vertical plane different from that containing the 'axis of the drum 1.
The vertical pivot 4 is placed in a frame 5 possibly comprising at its lower part 6, known means preventing the lifting of the pivot 4 in the frame 5.
On the other hand, on the part 3 is fixed for example by bolts 7, a casing 8 which is integral with the drum.
1 and internally contains a speed reducer meshing with the pinion (not shown) of a motor 9 fixed to the housing 8.
The traction member, shown in the example chosen, by a cable, is wound on the drum 1 so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
its winding plane is in the vertical plane passing through the axis of the vertical pivot 4. The device is completed by a guide 11 intended to facilitate the winding of the cable
10 on turn 1.
The handling apparatus thus constructed operates in the following manner.
The end of the cable 10 being fixed to the moving load, the motor is raised in motion and by the speed reducer 8, the drum 1 turns around its horizontal axis 2 in the direction indicated by arrow 13. When the cable is stretched between the bundle and the handling apparatus, the latter, under the action of resistance of the bundle, pivots around scn vertical axis 4, so that the drum 1 occupies a position located. between the vertical axis 4 and the load to be moved. In this position, the target 10 is placed automatically in the vertical plane .assault by the axis of the vertical pivot 4.
The traction is thus done correctly since the drum 1 assumes a position which is substantially perpendicular to the direction of the towing cable.
This correct position is obtained automatically thanks to the fact that the axis of the drum is in a vertical plane different from the plane containing the axis of the vertical pivot ,, The device can be moved and be used in different places including each must be provided with an appropriate crapaudine to receive it.
To facilitate the movement of this handling device, crankpins or handles 12 can be provided on part 3.
It will be readily appreciated that this apparatus can exert traction in any horizontal direction and can also be used for oblique or vertical upward or downward traction.
