<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Pour mieux faire comprendre la portée de l'invention, on décrira, à titre d'exemple, un mode de réalisation du nouveau dispositif en se référant au dessin schématique ci-annexé. i est l'enroulement; d'un électro-aimant, 1' son armature mobile;
2 et 3 sont des résistances;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"TIMER APPLICABLE TO AUTOMATIC STARTERS
CONSTANT TIME "Among the various types of automatic starters, we distinguish those known as constant time in which the duration of the start is independent of the state of load of the motor.
In these starters, to switch from one start position to the next, timers of different kinds are used, but the timing of which can however, in general, be adjusted.
The object of the present invention is a timer device which can be used with direct current as well as with alternating current, and which, while being very inexpensive, enables simple and robust starters to be produced.
For this purpose, we have recourse to a known phenomenon, which is the variation, as a function of time, of the potential difference at the terminals of a resistance heated by the passage of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
current given.
This variation in the potential difference can moreover be positive or negative depending on whether the body constituting the resistance has a positive coefficient of variation with temperature (iron, nickel, tungsten) or a negative coefficient of variation with temperature ( carbon, ocelity, frost, ....).
The positive or negative variation of the potential difference at the terminals of such a resistor is used to operate a starter contactor, either directly or via an auxiliary relay.
It is thus possible to pass from one starting position to the next, while remaining in each position for a sufficiently long period of time to allow the potential difference across the terminals of the corresponding resistor to reach the necessary value.
This time span can be adjusted to the desired limits, either by acting on the characteristic elements of the resistance, or by using relays or contactors capable of operating for an adjustable value of the voltage.
In order to better understand the scope of the invention, an embodiment of the new device will be described, by way of example, with reference to the attached schematic drawing. i is the winding; of an electromagnet, 1 its mobile armature;
2 and 3 are resistances;
4 is a switch.
L1 and L2 are the sockets.
Resistor 2 and winding i, connected as a shunt, are connected in series with resistor 3 and this circuit is connected to sockets L1 and L2.
When a given potential difference is maintained between these current sockets L1 and L2, a current is established in resistor 3 and in the two branches formed by
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
winding 1 and resistor 2, to. the instant when switch 4 is closed, this switch can moreover be controlled by the operation of a starting contactor.
If the various elements of the circuit are judiciously calibrated and if, for example, the coefficient of variation with the temperature of the material constituting the resistor 2 is positive, the potential difference across the terminals of the winding 1 will go, increasing to the instant when the ampere-turns will be sufficient to cause the attraction of the movable armature 1 'and to determine the closing or opening of suitable contacts 5.
EMI3.1
The eleetro-ainant belonging either to a starting contactor, or to an auxiliary relay acting on a starting contact, the starter passes from one starting position to the next with the necessary time delay and so on.
It is naturally permissible, without departing from the scope of the present invention, to produce variants operating in a manner equivalent to that of the example above and also characterized by the use of auxiliary resistors heated by the passage of given currents. and of which the subsequent variations in the potential difference at the terminals are taken advantage of to operate the various starting contactors, with a determined delay.
An extremely economical implementation is moreover possible by using one or more lighting lamps as auxiliary resistors.
