  BREVET D'INVENTION " MECANISME DE TRANSMISSION DE MOUVEMENT AVEC EMBRAYAGE ET CHANGEMENT DE VITESSE AUTOMATIQUES "
 EMI1.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

   Le cha- riot 46   en-   se déplaçant a agi sur l'étrier 49 de la façon suivante: Au début du mouvement, cet étrier 49 est resté   @     immobile   car à ce   moment,   les pignons étaient encore en pleine vitesse, d'où nécessité d'un très gros effort pour les séparer;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

  PATENT OF INVENTION "MOVEMENT TRANSMISSION MECHANISM WITH AUTOMATIC CLUTCH AND GEAR CHANGE"
 EMI1.1
 Preénië invention çô.érnë ûn tnécanisrne transmission capable of many applications but particularly advantageous for motor vehicles.

   This mechanism comprises a centrally acting clutch with automatic operation and a gear change also automatically functioning, that is to say that, without the intervention of the driver, this gear change is automatically brought into the position for which it ensures the speed transmission with the desired ratio, function of engine torque and torque

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   resistant to overcome.

   This automatic control of the change of speed is ensured by a centrifugal governor whose position depends on the speed imparted to the driven shaft, and which is maintained in each of the different positions that it can occupy, by an adjustable stabilizer. moves from one position to another, it drives one of the moving parts of the gear change in the corresponding position.

   Reverse gear is provided by a gear reversal gear that is put into action, for example by means of the hand brake lever.

   According to another characteristic of the invention, the accelerator pedal is used at the end of its closing stroke, to bring about the braking which can be provided by any suitable means.

   The transmission mechanism according to the invention greatly simplifies the driving of motor vehicles since the starting, the gear changes while driving, and the stopping are obtained automatically, the driver having simply to press the button. pedal for starting, and to cease its action for stopping or slowing down.

   Other characteristics and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description which will be given with reference to the appended drawing, of which FIG. 1-la shows in longitudinal section, schematically and simply by way of example, an apparatus according to the invention, FIG. 1a being the continuation of FIG. 1 to which it is connected according to the marks a-a, b-b.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   In this drawing, the shaft which receives its control from the motor, not shown, is designated by 1. On this shaft 1, is wedged a plate on which are articulated, at 3, a number of arms 4. starting from the balls 5. These arms 4 are integral with the branches 6 capable of acting on stops 7 integral with the plate. mobile 8. of a clutch, whose plate, fixed longitudinally, is designated by. Between these two plates 8 and 9 are arranged the clutch discs 10. This assembly constitutes a centrifugal clutch which operates as follows
When the shaft 1 turns, the balls 5 move apart under the action of centrifugal force and the branches 6 of the arms 4 cause the plate 8 to move.

   The latter is driven in rotation by the shaft 1 and it therefore drives the plate 9. Clui-oi in turn drives the shaft 12, via a freewheel 11, The freewheel 11 facilitates the passage. speeds. A spring 13 constantly tends to separate the plates 8 and 9 and to maintain the clutch in the rest position.

   The actual gear change comprises a pinion 14 integral with the aforementioned shaft 12; a pinion 15 is mounted on the secondary shaft 16 which is grooved over its entire length; over this shaft 16 can slide a sliding gear 18 comprising a pinion 19 which, for the first gear position (position shown) is engaged with the pinion 20 integral with the driven shaft 21.

  The sliding gear 18 also carries a pinion 22 which, for the second gear position, is engaged with the pinion 23 also integral with the shaft 21; the player 18 carries, finally, a pinion 24 which, for the position of third

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 me speed, is in engagement with the pinion still integral with the shaft 21; for the fourth gear, or direct drive, the player 18 is moved further to the right and its cullerette 26 causes the sleeve 27 integral with the socket 28 to move to the left. This socket 28 carries a toothing 29 yes then engages with the internal teeth 30 of the pinion 14. The shaft 1 2 is thus made directly integral with the bush 28 itself integral in rotation with the driven shaft 31.

   The rear opening is obtained by means of the pinion 32 wedged on the shaft 12 and constantly in engagement with an intermediate pinion 33. For reverse gear, it is then sufficient to move the pinion 15 along the shaft 16 to release it from the. pinion 14 and bring it into engagement with pinion 33 which then controls pinion 15 in the opposite direction. This reverse movement is transmitted to the driven shaft via the pinions 19 and 20 which are held in engagement for this reverse position. The longitudinal movement of the pinion 15 can be controlled by any suitable means, for example by an arm 34 operated by a lever which can be, for example the hand brake lever, which then cooperates with a dual sector system.

   When it cooperates with one of these sectors, this lever is used for braking and when it is moved to make it cooperate with the second sector, it enables the reverse gear to be placed. This arrangement has not been shown.

   We have seen previously that the player 18 could occupy four positions corresponding to the four speeds.

  In accordance with the invention, this player is automatically brought into these various positions, as a function of the torque developed by the motor and of the resistive torque which the driven shaft 31 must overcome.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   The device, which allows this automatic control of the player, essentially comprises a centrifugal regulator formed of a certain number of arms 35 each carrying a ball 36. Each of these arms is articulated, on the one hand at 37, on a support 38 driven by shaft 31, and on the other hand, by means of a ball joint 39 to a slide 40 capable of sliding in a radial groove 41 of a rotating and sliding disc 42. The centrifugal force tends to bring the arms 35 to their fully separated position while torsion springs 43 tend to bring them back to their retracted position. The disc 42 is integral with a collar 44 engaged in a roller bearing 45 carried by a carriage 46. This carriage is mounted on the hub 47 of the disc 42 via a bearing 48.

   This carriage 46 follows all the longitudinal movements of the disc 42, but it does not turn. This carriage drives in these longitudinal movements the stirrup 49 which controls the player 18, and this, by means of compensating springs 50 and 50a; this carriage 46 also controls a rack 51 which can be immobilized in each of the four positions which it can occupy thanks to projections 52 which can engage 'in one or the other of the notches 53 carried by this rack. - These projections are carried by a pinion 54, engaged with the rack 51, and integral with a disc 55 which can be immobilized in the four corresponding positions by a ball 56 pushed by a spring 57, the tension of which can be adjusted via screw 58.

   The rack 51 also controls a latch 59 which, each time it is moved away in one direction or the other from its mean position (shown in the figure), controls the closing.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 gases via the rod 60. To control this cleat, the rack has notches 61.

   The entire device according to the invention functions as follows: At rest and at idle speed, the various members of the device are in the position shown in the drawing. The gear change is in the first gear position and the plates 8, 9 are disengaged, so that the shaft 1 does not drive the shaft 12. As soon as you press the acceleration pedal, you causes an acceleration of the speed of the shaft 1, the clutch 8, 9 engages and the shaft 12 is driven. The shaft 31 is then driven in first gear. However, the arms 35 of the regulator temporarily remain in the position shown because the rack 51 is immobilized in this first position by the ball 56.

   When the speed of the shaft 31 reaches a certain value (for which it is advisable to switch to second speed), the arms 35 exert on the disc 42 a longitudinal force sufficient for the rack 51 to overcome the action of the spring 57 and arrive in its second possible position, for which it is the second notch 53 which engages with the second projection 52. For this second position of the barbell 51, the disc 42 is in position 42a.

   The cart 46 while moving acted on the caliper 49 in the following way: At the start of the movement, this caliper 49 remained @ motionless because at that time, the pinions were still at full speed, hence the need of a very great effort to separate them;

   The start of movement therefore had the sole effect of compressing the spring 50, but as soon as the rack 51 while moving, acted on the cleat 59 and thus cut off the ar-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 riveted to the throttle, the rotational movement of the pinions slowed down and at this moment, the carriage 46 and the decompression of the spring 50 controlled the movement of the caliper 49 and, consequently, of the slide 18 which thus arrived in second gear position, for which its pinion 22 is in mesh with pinion 23.

   When, for this second speed, the shaft 31 reaches a determined speed, the disc 42 will be controlled under the same conditions as above and will arrive in the position 42b corresponding to the position of third speed for which it is the pinion 24 which is meshed with the pinion 25, this gear shift taking place under the same conditions as the previous shift.

   Finally, when for this position of third speed, the speed of the shaft 31 reaches a determined value, the disc 42 is brought into position 42c for which the carriage 46 brings the player 18 into the direct drive position, for which its collar 26 controls sleeve 27, as explained above. Thus, without the driver having to operate the accelerator pedal, or having to act on any lever, the gear change will work automatically to pass successively from one gear to another, and finally to direct plug.

   If, during operation, the speed of the shaft 31 decreases, either as a result of an increase in the load which it has to overcome, or as a result of the operation of the accelerator pedal, the centrifugal force acting on the regulator 35, 36 decreases and the springs 43 cause, at a certain moment, the displacement to the left of the disc 42. The gear change then automatically passes for example from direct drive to third gear, this passage of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 speeds in the decreasing direction taking place in the same conditions as the passage in the increasing direction.

   The device for blocking the rack 51 in each of its four positions constitutes in a way a stabilizer governing the speed change regime.

  This changeover speed can be adjusted by screwing or unscrewing the screw 58, thus increasing or decreasing the tension of the spring 57. According to this tension, the force necessary to move the disc 41 varies and, consequently, the speed change speed varies in the same proportions.

  A handle 62 allows direct operation of the rack .il.

   Each gear change occurs when the engine speed is delayed. For example, the mechanism only controls the passage from second to third at 30 kilometers per hour, while it only controls passage from third to second at 20 kilometers per hour. The driver can cut the throttle himself with the accelerator pedal or he can decrease this acceleration, to slightly activate the gear change speed, but this only when the car is not tired or when it is downhill by example.

   When stopping, the gears change successively from one to the other and the device automatically returns to first. When the car is almost stopped, the clutch 4,5 idles, which controls the disengagement of the plates 8, 9.

   In the embodiment shown, it has been assumed that the pedal 63 not only serves to control the throttle but also serves to control the brakes. This pedal 63

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 has been shown in the drawing in the position for which it ensures the engine idling. When ;. this pedal is pressed to cause its angular displacement in the direction of the arrow, it acts on the lever 64, the branch 65 of which controls the rod 66, which controls the opening of the intake gases ... pedal from this idle position (position in the drawing), it moves in the opposite direction (under the action of its own spring) and its beak 67 then controls the pivoting of the lever 68 which acts on the linkage 69 controlling the braking.

   This braking can moreover be obtained by any suitable device: mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, exhaust gas, vacuum, etc.

   It is easily understood that the entire device according to the invention allows a great simplification of the driving of motor vehicles. The car being stationary, it suffices, in fact, to press on the pedal 63 to first remove the braking, then start the engine, which automatically engages the clutch, then the successive changing of gears, as explained previously. During the entire journey of the motor vehicle, the gear change will work automatically and, for a given position of the accelerator pedal, will always position itself at the speed corresponding to the load that the driven shaft has to overcome. 31.

   It goes without saying that the invention has only been described and shown for explanatory purposes and in no way limiting, and that detailed modifications can be made to it without altering its spirit.

RESUME , Mécaaisme de transmission de mouvement, pour véhicules automobiles en particulier, assurant une dise en marche et un arrêt automatiques du véhicule, ainsi que le changement automatique des vitesses en cours de marche, en fonction du couple moteur et du couple résistant à vaincre, mécanisme caractérisé par les points suivants ensemble ou séparément : ABSTRACT , Movement transmission mechanism, for motor vehicles in particular, ensuring an automatic starting and stopping of the vehicle, as well as the automatic change of gears during travel, according to the engine torque and the resistant torque to be overcome, characterized mechanism by the following points together or separately: . a) Il comprend un embrayage à action centrifuge comportant un régulateur à boules entraîné par l'arbre du moteur et dont le coulisseau forme, en quelque sorte, le plateau mobile de l'embrayage dont le. plateau fixe entraîne, de préférence par l'intermédiaire d'une roue libre, l'arbre d'entrée du changement de vitesse proprement dit. b) Le changement de vitesse comprend un certain nombre de pignons ou dentures fixes , et un baladeur monté sur un arbre secondaire et qui peut occuper-des positions différentes, correspondant chacune-à un rapport de vitesse déterminé. . a) It comprises a centrifugal-action clutch comprising a ball regulator driven by the motor shaft and whose slide forms, in a way, the movable plate of the clutch whose. fixed plate drives, preferably by means of a freewheel, the input shaft of the actual gear change. b) The speed change comprises a certain number of pinions or fixed teeth, and a sliding gear mounted on a secondary shaft and which can occupy different positions, each corresponding to a determined speed ratio. c) La position de ce baladeur est régie par un régulateur centrifuge commandé par l'arbre entraîné du mécanisme, et dont le coulisseau est susceptible d'occuper des positions longitudinales différentes, correspondant aux positions possibles du baladeur auquel est relié ce coulisseau, qui se trouve, d'autre part, stabilisé dans chacune de ses positions, par un stabilisateur à puissance réglable. c) The position of this player is governed by a centrifugal regulator controlled by the driven shaft of the mechanism, and the slide of which is capable of occupying different longitudinal positions, corresponding to the possible positions of the player to which this slide is connected, which is is, on the other hand, stabilized in each of its positions, by an adjustable power stabilizer. d) Ce stabilisateur est constitué par une crémaillère suivant tous les déplacements longitudinaux du coulisseau et entraînant un pignon muni de saillies susceptibles <Desc/Clms Page number 11> de s'engager dans des encoches de la crémaillère, ce pignon étant solidaire d'un disque dans les encoches duquel peut se loger une bille poussée par un ressort, cette bille immobilisant ainsi dans la position correspondante, le disque à encoches, le pignon à saillies, la crémaillère et, par conséquent le coulisseau qui maintient , à son tour, le baladeur dans la position voulue. e) La tension duessort agissant sur la bille de blocage peut être réglée afin qu'on puisse faire varier le régime de marche pour lequel les changements de vitesse doivent être effectués. d) This stabilizer consists of a rack following all the longitudinal movements of the slide and driving a pinion provided with projections capable of <Desc / Clms Page number 11> to engage in notches of the rack, this pinion being integral with a disc in the notches of which can be lodged a ball pushed by a spring, this ball thus immobilizing in the corresponding position, the notched disc, the pinion to projections, the rack and, consequently, the slide which in turn maintains the player in the desired position. e) The spring tension acting on the blocking ball can be adjusted so that the operating speed for which the gear changes are to be made can be varied. f) Des ressorts ou autres moyens appropriés agissent sur les bras du régulateur, en antagonisme à l'action de la force centrifuge. f) Springs or other suitable means act on the arms of the regulator, in antagonism to the action of the centrifugal force. :) THE rack also controls, at each start of movement, the closing of the inlet gases. : h) The slide acts on the sliding gear by means of compensating springs thanks to which the movement of this sliding mechanism occurs with a certain delay during which the speed of the gears in engagement decreases (as a result of the closing of the throttle as specified under g ), which makes it easier to change gears. i) Reverse gear is provided by a reversing pinion with which a second sliding gear can be brought into gear that can be operated by a lever. suitable which can advantageously be the hand brake lever. j) La'fin de la course de fermeture de la pédale <Desc/Clms Page number 12> d'accélération est utilisée pour la commande du système de freinage. j) The end of the closing stroke of the pedal <Desc / Clms Page number 12> acceleration is used to control the braking system.
