<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
volume, d'environ 1 : 3,5.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
EMI6.1
<tb>
<tb> 59,4% <SEP> de <SEP> Fe
<tb> 262,% <SEP> " <SEP> Ti
<tb> 1,4% <SEP> " <SEP> Si
<tb> 0,0067 <SEP> % <SEP> " <SEP> C
<tb> 3,0% <SEP> " <SEP> Cu
<tb> 10,0% <SEP> " <SEP> Al
<tb>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Manufacturing process of steel alloys for permanent magnets:
It has already been proposed to make permanent magnets, for example, for electro-dynamic loudspeakers, from steel alloys containing nickel and aluminum.
Various data concerning these steels are known and cited, for example, in French Patent No. 731,361 and by
EMI1.1
Kotaro Honda in the periodical ttMetallwîrtschaft ,, - wissensschaft und-technik "n 24 of June 15, 1934. According to this patent, steels with magnets are made of iron, added with 5 to 40% nickel and 1 to 20% aluminum, if desired with the addition of cobalt, manganese,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium or copper. According to this patent, Ni-Al steels have the great advantage that favorable magnetic values are obtained without hardening, so that they can be used without resorting to any hardening by heat treatment.
For the proper understanding of the present invention it will be appreciated that this is to be regarded as inaccurate in general. All the values of magnetism cited in the French patent exceed 9000 gauss, while all the maximum values of the coercive force exceed 400 gauss. Experiments have shown, in general, that approximately these values cannot be achieved in practice for steels of this composition without hardening. Even with the help of heat treatment, these values cannot be achieved.
Prolonged testing has shown that the assertion in this patent that the alloy in question has excellent magnetic properties in the cast state without subsequent heat treatment is incorrect in the vast majority of possible cases, if not always. No attention has been paid to the fact, among other things, that for a given composition of the steel the dimensions of the casting and the thermal properties of the casting mold are of decisive importance due to the strong influence of the cooling rate. For the usual dimensions and without hardening, the aforesaid alloys give magnetic values which are generally lower than those of known cobalt steels. Ni-Fe-Al alloys only offer appreciable advantages if a specific heat treatment is used.
This will be better understood by referring to a few examples, the data relating to specimens having the following dimensions.

It follows from these measures that without heat treatment the alloys offer noticeably no advantage.
Apart from individual special cases which are practically irrelevant (thin-walled castings, molds with high thermal conductivity) it can therefore be said that the values cited in the aforementioned publications cannot be achieved without heat treatment. special. In any case, the patent in question does not teach how one can obtain an advantage.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
valuable.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a magnet steel alloy which is much more insensitive to the cooling rate and has excellent magnetic properties even in the cast state, which properties are much superior to those of alloys in the cast state in accordance with the French patent cited above, after casting under normal conditions, and closely approximate the properties of these steels in the hardened state.
For the manufacture of magnet steel for permanent magnets made of an alloy containing iron as the main material, about 15 to 25% nickel and about 7 to 15% aluminum are added, in accordance with the invention, only 'a quantity of titanium (0.5 to 5%), depending on the dimensions of the magnet, such that the abrupt cooling of the casting can be dispensed with.
In this way an alloy is obtained which, when it is cast in sand, makes it possible to obtain good magnets without any additional thermal treatment, provided that its dimensions are not too large.
A very advantageous magnet steel can have approximately the following composition:
22% nickel
11% aluminum
3% titanium the remainder being iron.
This composition makes it possible to obtain magnets having a remanence of about 6400 gauss and a coercive force of about 500 gauss, and whose dimensions can be better characterized by a ratio between the surface and the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
volume, approximately 1: 3.5.
It will be easier to understand the results that the invention allows to obtain in practice, by an example taken in the manufacture of loudspeakers. Magnetic rings for electro-dynamic loudspeakers, for example, were given the following dimensions: outer diameter 72 mm inner diameter 49 mm height 22 mm. the ratio between the area (mm2) and the volume (mm3) being 1: 3.7.
Such a magnet was obtained by melting 27% Ni, and 12.5% Al, the remainder being iron, at a melting temperature of at least about 1450 C with sand casting. After cooling in the sand mold and subsequent magnetization, the following magnetic values are obtained: remanence Br 3400 coercive force Hc:
390 After a suitable heat treatment (hardening) and subsequent magnetization the following values are obtained:
Br 6000
Hc 540
The same magnet cast by means of the composition confirms the invention and in which, unlike the last composition which comprised 27% of Ni, part of the Ni is replaced by titanium, in this case 22% of Ni, 11% Al, 3% Ti (from 12% ferrotitanium), the remainder being iron, at a melting temperature of at least about 1450 C with sand casting, gives after cooling in
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the sand mold and subsequent magnetization, the values:
Br 6150
Hc 540 It therefore follows from the last example of the invention that without special heat treatment it is possible to obtain the magnetic values Br = 6150, Hc = 540.
These values are of practical importance for the construction of loudspeakers and are of the same order of magnitude as the values (Br 6000, Hc 540) which, according to the previous example, are obtained only by hardening.
Fig. 1 shows four demagnetization curves resulting from tests carried out with four test pieces of the aforesaid composition. The values indicated in the drawing relate to the alloy in the cast state, that is to say without heat treatment. The differences in the curves are caused by the order of the additions and the form in which they are used. Titanium, for example, should not be added in the pure state. but will preferably be a component of a commercial ferroalloy.
Such a ferro-alloy can have the following composition:
EMI6.1
<tb>
<tb> 59.4% <SEP> of <SEP> Fe
<tb> 262,% <SEP> "<SEP> Ti
<tb> 1.4% <SEP> "<SEP> If
<tb> 0.0067 <SEP>% <SEP> "<SEP> C
<tb> 3.0% <SEP> "<SEP> Cu
<tb> 10.0% <SEP> "<SEP> Al
<tb>
This matters because titanium in the form of ferrotitanium is less expensive than neat. Obviously the better results obtained by using the ferroalloy are due to the fact that the desired composition of the alloy can be achieved better with the aid of this addition than by using pure metal, among other things because the losses on ignition during alloy @
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
are weaker. In addition, it has been shown to be advantageous to use aluminum as the last constituent.
Fig. 2 shows the demagnetization curves of the same specimens, after they have undergone annealing for one hour at a temperature of 650 to 675 C. The curve 1 'shown in FIG. 2 corresponds to the same test specimen as curve 1 in FIG. 1 and so on. This heat treatment has practically no effect as clearly shown in fig. 3. In this figure, a is a curve which corresponds to the mean values of the curve shown in fig. l, while b corresponds to the average values of the curves shown in fig. 2. On average, the annealing operation therefore has no appreciable effect on the values of the coercive force and of the quantity B x H max.
As regards the remanence, a slight improvement is obtained.
In addition, it should be noted that the Ni, Al, Ti, Fe alloys must not undergo normal hardening.
In general, this leads to a significant reduction in the magnetic properties. The test piece corresponding to the curves 1 shown in FIG. 1 and at 1 'in FIG. 2 has undergone a hardening and annealing operation, with the result that the remanence is reduced to 5000 gauss and the coercive force to 300 gauss. In general, however, the magnets should not be hardened, because this operation always results in breakage in practice.
With regard to the titanium content it will be noted that a reduction in this content slightly increases the remanence, but at the same time the coercive force decreases to such an extent that the quality of the steel becomes inferior.
On the other hand, an increase in the titanium content above
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of 3% is not recommended, because it makes the metal brittle and is accompanied by a high percentage of scrap.
A low titanium content makes the alloy more sensitive to heat treatment.
It should be noted that the same effect is obtained, but to a much lesser extent, when the titanium is completely or partially replaced by zirconium or antimony.
