 EMI1.1

  J>E'R1!'II:m'tf)1M  A. tpÇ ET Pli± tolu. P01lR T.CTOT".

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

EXEMPLE II. -

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

   The present invention relates to electric conductors insulated by means of compositions similar to synthetic rubber. These insulators are flexible and resilient like natural rubber, but unlike natural rubber, they are not attacked by the reagents which normally attack and deteriorate rubber. The conductors according to the invention are metallic and their insulation may include besides organic substances

 nical or atineral, the whole being distributed according to one or more superimposed coti ches. In this way, all the desired characters can be achieved in isolation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The invention can be further characterized by the outer covering of the cable. and its Insulation by means of a layer of sufficient mechanical strength and tenacity, while avoiding covering with a layer of lead or similar metal, as is done in certain types of cables,
The invention also includes isolation methods which achieve the mentioned result.

   The advantages of rubber insulation of cables are the resilience, toughness and high dielectric strength of this product. On the other hand, rubber can be attacked or dissolved by a large number of agents such as solvents (gasoline, mineral oils, acids, etc.) or gases and in particular oxidizing products. Finally, it can be degraded under the influence of high voltages and the "corona" effect.

   The invention makes it possible to retain the advantages of rubber while avoiding its drawbacks. For this purpose, synthetic insulators are used, analogous to artificial rubber, whose mechanical properties and dielectric power are satisfactory, and which, according to certain methods of the invention, are resistant to flame and to the various reagents attacking rubber. - natural ohouc
EXAMPLE I. In this case, a polymerized derivative of a vinyl halogen, for example a polymer of vinyl chloride, is employed.

   The manufacture of these products is now well known in the art and can be carried out, for example, by means of vinyl halides under the action of intense sunlight or ultraviolet radiation and in the presence of a catalyst such as bensoyl peroxide. The completely polymerized product is in the form of a white powder which can be plasticized under suitable conditions.

   For carrying out the invention, a large number of plasticizers can be used, but the best effect appears to be tricresylphosphate. Moreover, depending on the degree of polymerization and the proportions of plasticizer and filler used, many can be obtained. products which are distinguished from one another by their flexibility, elasticity, resilience, toughness, resistance to mechanical deformation or deformation at high temperatures.

   To make the cable according to the invention in practice,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 it is preferable to use extrusion pressure, which allows the Insulating plastic ingredients to come out through a die, while applying them to the conductor. Before feeding the extrusion machine, it is possible to associate or mix previously various ways the polykinyl halides, the plasticizer and the filler.

   On the other hand, in many cases, it is preferable to first cover the conductor with an organic insulation, preferably cellulose, such as paper, cotton, textile tapes, cellophane, cellulose esters such as acetate. cellulose, or finally certain enamels based

   Thus, one can use mineral oxides such as alumina, even the conduc-

 tor; or one or more asbestos eouehes prior to enroba @ by means of the layer of halogenated and plasticized polyvinyl. Combinations of organic and inorganic insulators can be used.

   Finally, the conductor can be coated directly with a layer of halogenated vinyl resin, then the assembly can be coated with one or more layers of organic insulation or
 EMI3.4
 minerals such as those indicated above and finally coat the whole with an outer layer of halogenated and plasticized vinyl resin. It is therefore seen that, according to the invention, it is possible to vary, within extremely wide limits, the properties of composite insulation and adapt it to conductors for all known uses *
 EMI3.5
 The attached P'ig, 5 indicates the cross section of a conductor produced in accordance with the invention. We will give, by way of nonlimiting example,

     the description of this particular manufacture.

   The starting point is 60 parts by weight of a polyvinyl halide,
 EMI3.6
 for example chlorinated polyvinyl, and 40 parts by weight of a plasticizer such as triresylphoaphate are added thereto. This addition takes place gradually and in such a way as to perfectly homogenize the mass. The mixture remains powdery, but can be agglomerated by hand in a crumbly volume. The axis is then placed in an extrusion press which is heated to a temperature of the order of 100 k 180. 04, approximately and, preferably, around.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 150 C. Extrusion allows this material to be spun onto the target which may be one or preferably already coated with any of the insulators mentioned above.

   The temperature of the extrusion is regulated so that the plasticized polyvinyl layer is solid and has a suitable mechanical resistance after cooling,
Following a slightly different process, the polyvinyl derivative, the plasticizer and the filler are first combined in an intimate mixture, which is easily obtained by calendering the ingredients mixed between differential rollers, heated or not, depending on the composition chosen. the material which emerges from it is then rolled into sheets which can be fed as they are into the extrusion press, instead of the powder of the previous case.

     In certain cases, for example when the conductor has already received a preliminary insulating layer of rubber, the polyvinyl insulation put in sheets can be wound up in the form of a strip by means of a machine of the known type. This method becomes necessary if the nature of the coating suitable for the polyvinyl coating is liable to deteriorate at the temperature necessary for the extrusion:

    this is the case when it is desired to superimpose the polyvinyl resin on a prior rubber coating, After application of the polyvinyl composition by covering in the form of a raban, it is possible to complete by means of a lead sheath as
In Fig. 5, 13 shows the polyvinyl coating and 14 the intermediate layer which protects the metal conductor 15.

   As indicated above, different fillers associated with polyvinyl halides can be used. Examples of fillers include oxides of zinc, iron, magnesium, silica, diatomaceous earth, magnesia carbonate, magnesium oxides. carbon black, zinc stearate as well as various polyvinyl derivatives such as acetate or chlor-acetate. An inhibitor such as phenylaphantphthylamine or phenylbetanaphthylamine, monoamylamine, etc. can also be added.

   Dyes, pigments or dyes can be incorporated to vary the appearance of the isolate. As stated above, different plasticizers can be used in addition to the tricresylphosphate already mentioned, for example, products such as diphenyl, diphenyloxide, dibutyl phthala and etc.,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

EXAMPLE II. -
The invention described above can also be used in the manufacture of cables or enamelled fila. We know that such son are constituted by a metal core which is forced to pass through a bath of a suitable enamel, for example a greasy drying varnish.

   Once the conductor is thus wetted, it is passed through an oven or an oven at a suitable temperature to harden the coating. Frequently it is necessary to carry out several successive layers on the same wire, alternating the immersion in the bath and the steaming until the desired isolation has been reached.

   In the case of large electrical appliances, for example motor coils, the winding of the already enamelled wire is carried out without special precautions on a suitable core or part.

  Other times, the wire is wound into a spool and the whole thing assembled in a machine. In all cases, the finished coil is filament impregnated with an insulating varnish which is hardened at temperatures of the order of 150 C.

   The insulators used are satisfactory if they are both hard and resistant to abrasion such as may be encountered in manufacturing machines * This Insulator must also be resistant to the solvents commonly used in the final impregnation . The film must also have excellent adhesion to the metal and be able to undergo significant deformations without cracking or coming off the wire.

   These latter properties are particularly important when it comes to bent wires for coils and these undergo thermal shock when placed in the oven for curing *
In practice, the enamelled wires used in aouramsnent achieve * a more or less satisfactory compromise between these properties * The technique of this compromise is controlled by laboratory tests, according to which the different properties are observed separately. Extensibility is measured by enameling a wire, then ltalling it by 10% by pulling and then winding it on a mandrel whose diameter is three times that of the wire.

   If the enamel does not crack, the insulated wire is considered satisfactory from this point of view and it can be used in coils. The hardness is measured in a similar way, but the selected elongation then reaches 20%, while the winding is done

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 as above. Under these conditions, the enamel of the wire should crack, showing that the steam cure is sufficient and will allow it to withstand the pressure and attack by the solvents during the final varnishing.

   From what has been said above, the use of polyvinyl resins makes it possible to satisfy the current requirements of hardness and tensibility, but the adhesion, toughness and flexibility can be further improved. , dielectric strength, and obtain a remarkable resistance to abrasion. These products also resist attack by mineral oils and solvents and maintain a sufficiently low power factor.

   In FIGS. 1 to 4 together, there will be found sections of enameled wires prepared in accordance with the invention and comprising successive insulating layers produced as will now be described.

   In general, the vinyl resins which are most suitable for remeshing are obtained by reacting polymerized vinyl esters which have then been partially or totally hydrolyzed and which are condensed with an aldehyde. First, a practical method of manufacturing this raw material will be indicated.

   100 parts by weight of polymerized vinyl acetate are dissolved in 185 parts of crystallizable acetic acid. 83 parts of tormol solution and 6.8 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid are then added. The hydrolysis is carried out at 70 ° C., in an enamelled vessel fitted with a stirrer, for 20 to 25 hours. To adjust the duration of the hydrolysis, a sample is taken between the sixteenth and eighteenth hour, which makes it possible to learn about the degree of progress of this hydrolysis.

   13 parts of ammonia solution are then added, so as to neutralize, and the reaction product is precipitated in water in the form of filaments; it is washed and dried in a current of air at around 60 C Ce
The filamentary product obtained is then dissolved in a suitable organic liquid, for example dioxane, ethylene dichloride, chloroform, furfural or in a mixture of several liquids, for example 35% chlorobenzene and 15% chlorobenzene. regular alcohol. The solutions can, moreover, be used in various concentrations, and this dissolution can be carried out at room temperature or at higher temperatures.

  These solutions are then used for the enameling of the wires.

   For example, a solution in dioxane, at a level of 6 to 8%, is applied directly to the wire with conventional devices for remeshing and makes it possible to obtain, by baking, an insulating coating directly on the wire. Under a thickness of 0.0065 mm, on wire, the dielectric strength reaches 40 to 52 Roofs per thousandth of a millimeter, Berne under a small thickness and with a single layer, it was found that the continuity of the insulating film is almost perfect.

  Under a length of ours, the insulated wire showed no cracks and its insulation resistance was at least 200,000 ohms per decimeter at any point along its length. We know, however, that it is practically impossible to prepare wires whose insulation is absolutely continuous after a single immersion when ordinary enamels are used and that the greatest care must be taken to clean the wire before enamel application.

   To improve the isolation thus obtained, it is possible to use a 10% solution in dioxane and two coatings, which gives a film having a thickness of 0.0012 mm. The continuity of this coating is excellent and its average dielectric strength reaches 44 volts per thousandth of a millimeter. With four layers, a thickness of 0.033 mm is obtained. and a dielectric strength of 52 to 68 volts per thousandth of a millimeter,
It is also possible to produce thick films of vinyl products for conductor insulation. In this case, the method by winding an undefined strip of synthetic resin will preferably be used, but it is also possible to use successive immersions in a solution.

  With this second method, a copper wire of 0.98 mm. was coated with a layer of 0.032 to 0.038 mm., using as a solvent the mixture of 85% chlorobenzene and 15% ethyl alcohol. The average dielectric strength reached 2.6 K. V. between the conductor and the mercury where the coil of wire had been immersed for the test.

   The resulting coating is extremely tough and flexible. When the wire is stretched until it breaks, the insulation shows no cracks, just hopping at the point of failure. The wires covered with this insulation exhibit an amazing resistance to abrasion, deformation, kinking and hammering. It is thus possible to extend to the vicinity of its breaking point of the insulated wire according to the invention, then to wind it up on itself as a man-

 drin, without cracking the plaster.

   The insulated wire can be extended by pulling in any way required for the practical manufacture of the apparatus, then treated with the varnishes, or else placed immediately in a 150 C. oven without cracking or cracking. degradation of the film. The insulated wire can be struck with a hammer on a steel anvil until its diameter is reduced by at least 50% 50% without breaking the coating.

     Under no circumstances, the insulation obtained is not attacked by the solvents and varnishes generally used, whether these solvents come from coal tar or oils * The enamelled wire can be immersed for 48 hours in toluene, without disturbing the properties fila.

   On the contrary, the coatings of the usual organic enamels do not withstand this intense chemical action without swelling or peeling,
Two elements of insulated wire can be wound on themselves in accordance with the invention, then the assembly can be deformed until the cross section is very visibly altered and without the insulation between the wires having fallen too far. below 1015 ohms; generally a higher value is observed. This shows that the insulation has not been altered by this treatment. The abrasion resistance, which is observed with insulated enamelled wires, is a remarkable property from a practical point of view.

   On testing, this resistance would be at least four times better than that of the best commercial double-coated enamels with which they were compared. For this property, the insulated wires obtained are superior to all enamelled wires covered with cotton or paper. Therefore, yarns can be insulated only with this material and without the need to then protect it with cotton, paper or other coating for purely mechanical use.

   The dielectric properties of these coatings are good, both for dielectric strength and for losses. It is thus., Possible to significantly reduce the thickness of the insulation by comparison with what has been done so far. It also results from this that more copper can be introduced into the grooves of an engine or generator, and therefore the efficiency and power of that machine can be increased. This obviously remains true for transformers, induction regulators and other electrical devices in which the insulated wire is used as a coil.

  Conversely, for a constant power of the machine, it becomes possible to reduce the quantities of metals used.
