Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Improvements to phosphor-aenae lighting devices.

   Currently used for night signaling on roads, auto-collimator systems made luminous by means of an auxiliary source located near and dependent on the observer, that is to say, for example, headlights. a motor vehicle. The need for this auxiliary source is a serious drawback for this kind of signaling, and makes it

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 inoperative for a pedestrian or for the driver of a cart without a lantern.

   We wanted to overcome this drawback by using luminescent panels which would charge during the day, and restore the stored energy during the night.

   Unfortunately, the brightness of luminescent materials currently used decreases very quickly and after a fairly short time, before the end of the night in particular, it is no longer noticeable. The light sources placed on the road are not powerful enough to recharge phosphorescent substances.

   The object of the present invention is to remedy these various drawbacks by using a phosphorescent substance in combination with an optical system concentrating on it the light emitted from the auxiliary sources so as to form images of these sources of great brilliance energetically recharging the phosphorescent substance.

     Typically the luminescent substance will be disposed on the focal surface of the optical system. In the case where. the optical system is centered on the direction of irradiation Intended to become the direction of observation, its apparent surface will have, on observation, a brightness equal to that of the luminescent substance used placed at its focus.

   If the optics are not stigmatic or if the irradiation is not well in the direction of the axis of the system, or if the light source has appreciable dimensions, the image obtained will also have an appreciable surface and l 'we will obtain a certain divergence in the observations
The accompanying drawings represent sohematically and by way of example, some realizations of the assembly:
Fig.l to 4 relate to refracting systems and,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 freezes 5 and 6, reflective systems.

   In its simplest form (fig.l) the device according to the invention comprises a concentrating optical system consisting of a lens 1 at the focus F of which the active substance has been placed. The device acts mainly for irradiation as for observation in a privileged direction D,
A small sphere 2 made of solid glass or filled with a liquid can also be used as an optical system.

   In. In this case, the phosphorescent substance will be placed on the inner surface of another sphere 3 / concentric to the first and whose radius is calculated from the index of the refractory sphere so that its added radius to that of the refraotant sphere is equal to its focal length, that is to say that the phosphorescent substance is placed following the focal surface of the sphere 2. In this case this surface will have all its points successively irradiated by fluxes of light rays such as A from all directions within an angle of 180. The reverse phenomenon will occur for Non-compliance.

   It is also possible to mold the object sphere and the sphere as the focal point of the foci all at once, as shown in fig.

   Elements of this type can be assembled in a plate so as to increase the useful surface. It is also possible not to give the same opening to the objective part and to the irradiating part in the manner known for self-collimating systems, for example the width of the latter could be maximum in the sense that it is desired to keep the maximum field d 'use, while its thickness in the perpendicular direction is smaller.

   The objective sphere can be replaced without departing from the scope of the invention by one or a portion of an ellipsoid so as to have a better concentration of light in the plane.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   fooal.

   The same irradiating surface 3 can also be (FIG. 4) combined with two optical systems 1 and 1 ′, offset with respect to one another so as to ensure the efficiency of the system in two directions D and D ′.

   Concentration can also be achieved by a refracting system instead of by a refracting system.

   The reflecting system can be either a paraboloid 4 (fig. 5), or a spherical mirror. In the latter case, it is interesting to place the phosphorescehte substance on another sphere 5 having the same center as the but a smaller radius, generally half (fig. 6). In this case the system has no privileged direction. The concentration is less good than if the source is placed on the axis of a paraboloid, but the divergence obtained is greater.

     It will be observed that in all the devices which have just been described, the luminescent substance also plays more or less the role of a reflecting surface and allows them to function partially as self-adhesive devices.

   It is also possible to combine the elements as described with a lens placed for example in the middle of them. Normally a light source placed behind the lens is used, but if this source is stopped, the self-luminous elements which are combined with it play the role of emergency devices.
