Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   Exemple -
On désire obtenir un acier spé.cial ayant la composition suivante :
C=0,08
MN=0,70
P=0,075
S =200
Fe = Reste.

  PROCESS FOR MAKING SPECIAL STEEL BY
ADDITION OF SULFUR :.

   The present invention a. for object a process to manufacture special steel containing sulfur.

   The sulfur content required to improve the chip-forming ability of special steels is generally added to the molten steel in the form of oristallized sulfur or. amorphous, or in the form of iron containing sulfur. This method of adding sulfur results in a whole series of drawbacks; in particular, the sulfur cannot be mixed in a sufficiently intimate manner with the molten metal, ae which is due among other things to the. difference between specific weights.

   The present invention aims to eliminate these drawbacks. This is based on the fact that, most of the time, an still adds to the molten steel, and after the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 pouring, a certain amount; deoxidizing metal, generally manganese or another metal to form an alloy with the molten mass. According to the present invention, this metal, for example manganese, and sulfur are added, not separately ,. but simultaneously in the form of a mixture having the suitable proportions.

   This mixture is, for example ,. obtained by mixing, while stirring, metallic manganese and. finely divided iron manganese, or. more manganese powder, in the molten sulfur in a very fluid state. On solidification, this mixture acquires a particular metallic character and can be conveniently cast in the form of small masses or pieces of any shape. Its pieces are added to the steel bath.

   The particular metallic character of the sclidified mixture does not appear to be due to a chemical combination between sulfur and manganese, but to the fact that the pulverulent manganese is suspended in the sulfur. Since this suspension is already sufficient in the fluid liquid state, it is also possible to add the. mixing in the liquid state in a steel bath and the same advantages are obtained in this way.

  These advantages reside in the fact that the mixture has a greater specific gravity than that of pure sulfur, that it therefore mixes better with molten steel and that it penetrates more quickly into the mass. fusion; moreover, the presence of manganese particles in suspension in the sulfur raises the ignition point of the sulfur, or at least the rate of combustion of the latter body is reduced. one also obviates the drawbacks which reside, because of the rapid combustion of sulfur, in the difficult dosage of the quantities of this substance and in the action of supplying oxygen from the burnt sulfur: on the iron and on the manganese of the bath .

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   According to the invention ,. it is, however, recommended to add the mixture to the bath in the form of solidified pieces, since it is thus possible to apply other measures to prevent the combustion of sulfur, in the sense that the pieces can be surrounded an envelope that protects them from oxidation. A water glass solution, for example, in which the pieces are soaked, is suitable for forming such a casing, however, preferably a casing made of reducing material such as paper, for example, is used.

   The main advantage of the invention lies in a very uniform distribution of sulfur in the solidified steel block. While in the usual manufacturing processes of special steels, differences of 0.10% in the sulfur content (for an average content of 0.23%). between the top and the bottom of the steel ingot, are normal, these differences are halved by the use, in accordance with the invention, of a mixture of sulfur and manganese; if, in addition, an oxidation-protecting shell is used, the aforementioned differences are practically eliminated.

   This advantage is all the more remarkable given the differences in the sulfur content observed in special steels. usual are not attributable to "liquidations" in the proper sense of the word, so that we were not able, until now, to avoid these differences by means by which one obtains steels said not to sweat.

   In the following, an example of implementation of the invention will be described by means of a mixture of sulfur and manganese, because this embodiment is the most advantageous; it is however obvious that the spirit of the invention is also aimed at -use, instead of manga- nès.e.,. another metal capable of being alloyed with steel,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 even iron, a metal which is mixed while stirring with the sulfur.

   Example -
It is desired to obtain a special steel having the following composition:
C = 0.08
MN = 0.70
P = 0.075
S = 200
Fe = Stay.

   In the casting sample, analysis of the molten steel to which it is desired to incorporate sulfur. indicates a manganese content of 0.72% and a sulfur content of 0.206%.
